Perturbation of the electrified interface and the response of the thickness-shear mode acoustic wave sensor under conductive liquid loading

The behavior of the thickness-shear mode (TSM) acoustic wave sensor under conductive liquid loading has been examined by acoustic network analysis. The response of the TSM sensor arises from the perturbation of the electrified interface, including the acoustoelectric coupling of the surface potential with ionic species and the formation of the electrical double layer. In dilute solutions, dissipation of acoustic energy resulting from acoustoelectric coupling dominates the complete energy-transfer process, which leads to a rapid decrease of the series resonant frequency and in increase in the motional resistance

Acoustic network analysis and equivalent circuit simulation of the thickness-shear mode acoustic wave sensor in the liquid phase

Network analysis of the behavior of the thickness-shear mode (TSM) acoustic wave sensor is validated and the ability of the Butterworth—Van Dyke (BVD) equivaleny circuit to describe the electrical characteristics of the sensor was examined under various conditions. The results demonstrate that the impedance of the quartz crystal can be measured when one or both sides of the device are immersed in a viscous liquid or a conductive solution. The equivalent circuit is satisfactory in simulating the impedance characteristics of the TSM sensor in the liquid phase under most conditions except for total immersion of the sensor in highly viscous or conductive liquids. It is shown that the frequency response of the TSM device depends on individual crystals and experimental configurations.

Thickness-shear mode acoustic wave sensors and flow-injection analysis

A feasibility study of the combination of the flow-injection analysis (FIA) technique with the piezoelectric acoustic wave sensor (thickness-shear mode, TSM) is described. Flow-injection systems provide a method to relate the hydrodynamic response of the sensor to the concentration-time profile of the analyte produced by the dispersion behaviour of sample zones. Network analysis of the TSM sensor generates multi-dimensional information on the bulk properties of the liquid sample and surface properties at the liquid/solid interface. The relationship between acoustic energy transmission and the interfacial structure, viscosity, density and dielectric constant of the analyte is discussed. The FIA-TSM system provides a rapid, reproducible detection method with enhanced sensitivity and scope.
