Measurements of the flux of neutrons from the HT-1 through hole of the MTR show that a square source block 2″ thick is more effective than a 3 8 ″ thick plate placed at a reflecting angle to the beam. With the 2″ thick polyethylene block, a beam of thermal neutrons of 8 × 10 0 n/cm 2sec are available at the cubicle face while the cadmium ratio for an indium detector is 4.47. These measurements indicate that when the velocity selector is moved from its present hole to HT-1 north, the following gains can be realized; thermal flux × 14, thermal signal to fact background × 28, resonance region signal to fast background × 56.
