Effect of Firing Temperature and Glass Content on the Electrical Properties of Thick Film Capacitors

A study was carried out to investigate the effects of the firing temperature of thick film capacitors on the capacitance density, loss factor and breakdown voltage. These effects were studied by varying the firing temperature and glass content of the dielectric paste and by using different types of electrode paste. The active part of the prepared paste was barium titanate and glass binder lead borosilicate glass.

Electrical properties of thick film capacitors based on barium titanate glass formulations

We carried out an investigation of the effects of the glass content of the dielectric layer of thick film capacitors with a barium titanate glass formulation on the capacitance density, loss factor and breakdown voltage of the capacitors. These effects were studied by varying the firing temperature and glass content of the dielectric paste and by using different types of electrode paste. The characteristics of a test capacitor were also measured.

Thick Film Capacitor Materials of the Powder–Glass Binary Systems and Their Dielectric Properties

Descriptions are given of the fundamental dielectric properties of the thick film binary system, composed of dielectric powder and glass, in relation to the effect of bulk properties of the constituent electrode composition in preventing a decrease in breakdown voltage with time and the effect of glass passivation on the reliability of thick film capacitors.

Thick-Film Capacitors on Glass Substrates

Thick-film capacitors have been fabricated on aluminium metal plate and metallized glass plates using dielectric paste type 780 supplied by Transene Company Inc, USA and two-component silver-filled conducting paste type H20 supplied by Epo-Tech, USA. Their dependence on temperature, voltage and frequency has been studied The temperature co-efficient of capacitance showing a pronounced minimum with capacitance has been observed to decrease with rise of linear co-efficient of thermal expansion of the substrate material and shifts to a higher capacitance value. The capacitance has also been found to be independent of frequency and voltage.

Hybrid Microcircuitry for 300°C Operation

Microelectronic instrumentation for geothermal well logging must operate in ambient temperatures up to 300°C for several hundred hours. This study involved an extensive survey of 25 to 300°C operation of resistors, capacitors, conductors, interconnections, and active devices. Three major selection criteria were: 1) part lifetime of at least 1000 h at 300°C; 2) minimum change in electrical parameters from 25 to 300°C; 3) availability to the common circuit builder (no one of a kind). Certain thick film resistors, capacitors, and conductors were found compatible with such high-temperature operation. In addition, reconstituted mica and aluminum solid electrolytic capacitors were found useful up to 300°C. Simple circuits for a geothermal temperature logging tool have been fabricated using these hybrid materials, components, and Si MOS and JFET devices. Oven tests show satisfactory stability from 25 to 300°C and at least 100-h circuit operation at 300°C.

Glass-Passivated Thick-Film Capacitors for RC Circuits

The advantages, disadvantages, and the reasons for the limited usage of thick-film capacitors are discussed. The electrical and environmental properties of a glass-passivated high dielectric constant (HiK) (~1000) capacitor which does not require hermetic packaging are described. Design criteria for achieving a Iow-cost thick-film capacitor-resistor-conductor network are presented. These include: 1) satisfying multiple circuit requirements; 2) using many capacitors, resistors, and conductors per circuit or per processing operation; 3) using Iow-cost materials, sealing techniques, and processes; 4) achieving high yields. An example is cited of a television tuner circuit on a 2 X 3 X 0.040-in substrate utilizing 47 resistors, 30 capacitors, 8 crossovers, and 1 ground plane in which the substrate also serves as a printed,circuit board for mounted discrete components.

Thick Film Techniques for Microwave Integrated Circuits

A thick film approach to state-of-the-art microwave integrated circuits, which has been used to produce thousands of highly reliable low cost S-band and L-band solid state modules for production radar systems is described. These modules include low-noise amplifiers, double conversion mixers, interdigital filters, multiple port power dividers and switches, phase encoders, and power amplifiers. A discussion of the fabrication and microwave properties of thick film conductors, resistors, and capacitors is given along with photographs and performance data of various microwave integrated circuit modules that accumulated over a million device hours in operation without a failure.

In this paper a method for manufacturing capacitors in which the insulation is made from a mixture of rutilium (TiO 2) and glass powders, is discussed. The dependence of electric permittivity and losses on the content of TiO 2 in the dielectric, are tested. Much attention has been paid to the capacitors containing 90 per cent of TiO 2 (in respect of weight) in their insulation which have been protected with a silicone varnish against ambient moisture effects. The conductivity of their insulation as a function of electric field intensity and ambient temperature has also been measured. The capacity changes and tan δ have been defined in a wide frequency band and with respect to temperature. The capacitor response in long periods of operation under various ambient conditions has been checked.
