Tectono-metamorphic interaction of upper mantle peridotites and lower crustal units during continental rifting in the western Betic Cordillera

Recent geological mapping conducted in the Ronda Peridotites (Betic Cordillera, S Spain) has revealed a systematic field correlation between lower crustal metamorphic units and different tectono-metamorphic domains of the ultramafic massif. Mylonitic and highly tectonized Spl ± Grt peridotites (i.e., Grt-Spl mylonite and Spl tectonite domains), which are considered to be derived from a thick continental lithosphere, are in contact with garnet-bearing gneisses (i.e., kinzigites) of the Jubrique unit along a narrow but continuous mylonitic shear zone. Phase equilibrium calculations indicate that the metamorphic rocks of the Jubrique unit are consistent with an initial continental setting characterized by normal crustal thicknesses, which underwent two melting events. The first melting occurred at 0.9–1.0 GPa / 770–800 °C and resulted in 13 %melt, while the second one took place at shallower crustal conditions (0.4–0.5 GPa and 710–765 °C) and led to more restricted melt production (2–3 %melt). In contrast, the Spl ± Pl peridotites (Pl-tectonite domain), which are stable only at shallowest mantle levels within a highly extended continental lithosphere, are consistently found exposed in contact with heterogeneous granites and migmatites of the Guadaiza unit. According to new thermodynamic modeling, the Guadaiza metamorphic rocks record a single melting event characterized by a theoretical melt production of 6 to 11 % at the base of a very thin continental crust (ca. 0.3 GPa and 675–710 °C). This process was likely facilitated by influx of external water, necessary to generate high melt fractions observed in the diatexites. The systematic correlation observed between crustal metamorphic units, consistently overlaying the mantle rocks, and specific ultramafic domains of the Ronda massif, suggests that their juxtaposition primarily resulted from the severe extension of the continental lithosphere.U-Pb radiometric dating of zircons from gneisses, migmatites, and heterogeneous granites in the middle crustal rocks of the Guadaiza unit indicates that extensional processes, crustal anatexis, and melt stagnation occurred at around 280 Ma. Comparison of these new radiometric ages with previous results from the Jubrique unit suggests that a Permian high-temperature / low- to medium-pressure event uniformly affected the crustal units over the Ronda Peridotites. This event coincided with the formation of characteristic ultramafic mineral assemblages within the Ronda massif and provides evidence for the interaction between upper mantle rocks and lower- to mid-crustal metamorphic rocks during this period.

Blind magmatism abets nonvolcanic continental rifting

Tectonic forces alone cannot drive rifting in old and thick continental lithosphere. Geodynamic models suggest that thermal weakening is critical for lithospheric extension, yet many active rifts lack volcanism, seeming to preclude this process. We focus on one such rift, the Tanganyika-Rukwa segment of the East African Rift System, where we analyze local seismicity for shear wave anisotropy and couple the results with numerical modeling. The strongest splitting measurements are from earthquakes with paths sampling lower crustal regions of high compressional-to-shear wave velocity ratios and have fast polarization directions parallel to the local mantle flow, implying the existence of oriented melt lenses. This lower crustal magmatism and observed high surface heat flow are consistent with substantial lithospheric weakening and explain the enigmatic relief and increasing strain accommodation along the rift axis. We conclude that progressive nonvolcanic rifting is assisted by deep crustal melts yet to breach the surface.

Sublithospheric melt input in cratonic lamproites

Abstract Cratonic lamproites are diamondiferous ultrapotassic rocks that are emplaced through thick continental lithosphere and thought to derive from melting of metasomatized (i.e., geochemically enriched) regions of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM). We explored the alternative hypothesis that melts sourced from sublithospheric (i.e., convective mantle) sources dominate the genesis of cratonic lamproites. Supporting evidence includes a robust linear correlation between the Mg/Fe ratios of xenocrystic and magmatic olivine in lamproites worldwide, overlapping the trend observed for kimberlite olivine. This indicates that, similar to kimberlites, primary lamproite melts originate from broadly similar sublithospheric mantle sources before assimilating SCLM material of variable composition. The lamproites are also characterized by a direct correlation between olivine Mg/Fe ratio and bulk-lamproite K2O/Al2O3, an index of potassium enrichment in the melt that is independent of mantle-xenocryst entrainment and magmatic differentiation. Quantitative modeling indicates that this correlation results from the interaction between carbonate-bearing sublithospheric melt and phlogopite-rich wall rocks in the SCLM. Our data show that cratonic lamproites and kimberlites have similar mantle sources in the convective mantle, with lamproites acquiring their peculiar enrichment in K by interaction with metasomatized SCLM en route to the surface. Modification of sublithospheric melts during transit through the continental lithosphere might represent a common process for the genesis of alkaline mafic/ultramafic magmas.

Magmatic rifting in the Main Ethiopian Rift began in thick continental lithosphere; the case of the Galema Range

The northern Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) in East Africa is considered a region of incipient oceanic spreading, with Miocene border faulting now largely abandoned at the expense of magmatic extension in the Wonji Fault Belt (WFB). However, whether magmatic extension began when the Ethiopian lithosphere was still-thick, or heavily stretched, is unknown. The Galema range, a linear Pliocene dike swarm parallel to the eastern margin of the present-day central MER, is an ideal study locale to constrain melting depths, and by inference the thickness of the lithosphere, during early magmatic rifting. To address this issue, we present whole-rock, trace element data on 77 samples of Galema range magmas. We interpret contrasting results between two modeling approaches as evidence for magma ponding subsequent to melt generation. Trace element models of melt generation reveal melting conditions of TP = 1418–1450 °C at 2.9–3.2 GPa, some ~68–100 °C above ambient. In contrast, Si/Mg activity thermobarometry, which probes the point at which these magmas last re-equilibrated with the mantle, yielded broadly similar temperatures (1435–1474 °C) but at lower pressures (2.1–2.6 ± 0.2 GPa: 78–89 km depth); these results are broadly parallel to contemporaneous magmatism on the western rift margin in the Akaki Magmatic Zone. We interpret these results as evidence for magma stalling at a thermo-mechanical boundary to ascent: the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary. The Ethiopian continental lithosphere has therefore remained relatively thick late into the rifting process, with important potential implications for late-stage decompression melting prior to the onset of seafloor spreading.

Quasi-Love wave scattering reveals tectonic history of Australia and its margins reflected by mantle anisotropy

The Australian continental crust preserves a rich geological history, but it is unclear to what extent this history is expressed deeper within the mantle. Here an investigation of Quasi-Love waves is performed to detect scattering of seismic surface waves at mantle depths (between 100–200 km) by lateral gradients in seismic anisotropy. Across Australasia 275 new observations of Quasi-Love waves are presented. The inferred scattering source and lateral anisotropic gradients are preferentially located either near the passive continental margins, or near the boundaries of major geological provinces within Australia. Pervasive fossilized lithospheric anisotropy within the continental interior is implied, on a scale that mirrors the crustal geology at the surface, and a strong lithosphere that has preserved this signal over billions of years. Along the continental margins, lateral anisotropic gradients may indicate either the edge of the thick continental lithosphere, or small-scale dynamic processes in the asthenosphere below.

Geodetic Constraints on Cratonic Microplates and Broad Strain During Rifting of Thick Southern African Lithosphere

AbstractSouthern Africa is typically considered to belong to a single tectonic plate, Nubia, despite active faulting along the southwestern branch of the East African Rift System. We analyze regional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements, and find that the “San” microplate, situated south of the southwestern branch of the East African Rift, is statistically distinct from Nubia, with 0.4–0.7 mm/yr of extension across the boundary. Adding nine new campaign GNSS sites, we show that the extension rate across the southern Malawi Rift is 2.2 ± 0.3 mm/yr, with 75% of the relative velocity occurring over 890 km, despite the surface expression of faulting being <150 km wide. Thus, for the first time, we use geodetic measurements to describe the accommodation of strain in broad zones between Archean cratons in southern Africa's thick continental lithosphere.

Origins of olivine in Earth’s youngest kimberlite: Igwisi Hills volcanoes, Tanzania craton

Monomineralic millimeter-sized olivine nodules are common in kimberlites worldwide. It is generally thought that such ‘dunitic nodules’ originate from the base of the cratonic lithosphere and that their formation marks the onset of deep-rooted kimberlite magmatic plumbing systems. However, thermobarometric constraints to support such a model have been lacking thus far. This study focuses on the petrography and textures, as well as on pressure–temperature estimations, of well-preserved dunitic nodules from the Quaternary Igwisi Hills kimberlite lavas on the Tanzania craton, with the ultimate goal to constrain their origins. We utilize EBSD-determined textural information in combination with olivine geochemistry data determined by EPMA and LA-ICP-MS methods. We find that host olivine grains in these nodules are compositionally similar to olivine in garnet-facies cratonic mantle peridotites, and such an association is supported by garnet inclusions within olivine. Projection of Al-in-olivine temperatures onto a regional geotherm suggests that the host olivine grains equilibrated at ~ 100–145 km depth, which points to origins from mid-lithospheric levels down to the lower cratonic mantle if a depth of 160–180 km is considered for the lithosphere–asthenosphere transition beneath the Tanzania craton. These first pressure–temperature estimates for dunitic nodules in kimberlites suggest that their formation also occurs at much shallower depths than previously assumed. Recrystallized olivine grains (i.e., neoblasts) show random crystallographic orientations and are enriched in minor and trace elements (e.g., Ca, Al, Zn, Sc, V) compared to the host olivine grains. These features link neoblast formation to melt-assisted recrystallization of cratonic mantle peridotite, a process that persisted during kimberlite magma ascent through the lower half of thick continental lithosphere. Partial recrystallization of olivine-rich mantle xenoliths makes these materials texturally weaker and subsequent liberation of mineral grains promotes the assimilation of compositionally ‘unstable’ orthopyroxene in rising carbonate-rich melts, which is considered to be an important process in the evolution of kimberlite magmas. Dunitic nodules in kimberlites and related rocks may form as melt–rock equilibration zones along magmatic conduits within the lower half of the cratonic mantle column all the way up to mid-lithospheric depth. Such an origin potentially links dunitic nodules to olivine megacrysts, which are equally considered as melt/fluid-assisted recrystallization products of peridotitic mantle lithosphere along the ascent pathways of deep-sourced CO2–H2O-rich ultramafic melts.

The role of edge-driven convection in the generation of volcanism – Part 1: A 2D systematic study

Abstract. The origin of intraplate volcanism is not explained by plate tectonic theory, and several models have been put forward for explanation. One of these models involves edge-driven convection (EDC), in which cold and thick continental lithosphere is juxtaposed with warm and thin oceanic lithosphere to trigger convective instability. To test whether EDC can produce long-lived high-volume magmatism, we run numerical models of EDC for a wide range of mantle properties and edge (i.e., the oceanic–continental transition) geometries. We find that the most important parameters that govern EDC are the rheological parameters mantle viscosity η0 and activation energy Ea. However, even the maximum melting volumes predicted by our most extreme cases are insufficient to account for island-building volcanism on old seafloor, such as at the Canary Islands and Cabo Verde. Also, beneath old seafloor, localized EDC-related melting commonly transitions into widespread melting due to small-scale sublithospheric convection, inconsistent with the distribution of volcanism at these volcano chains. In turn, EDC is a good candidate to sustain the formation of small seamounts on young seafloor, as it is a highly transient phenomenon that occurs in all our models soon after initiation. In a companion paper, we investigate the implications of interaction of EDC with mantle plume activity (Manjón-Cabeza Córdoba and Ballmer, 2021).

Dynamics of continental lithosphere extension and passive continental rifting from numerical experiments of visco-elasto-plastic thermo-chemical convection in 2-D Cartesian geometry

In contrast to active continental rifting, which is caused by the thermal erosion of active upwelling plumes, passive continental rifting is attributed to the extensional stress acting on the continental lithosphere due to either the basal drag force exerted by the passive mantle flow under the lithosphere or the boundary forces at the continental margins. Although the extension of continental lithosphere by passive continental rifting may cause the breakup of continental margins, such as the separation of Zealandia from Gondwanaland at ca. 100 Ma and the Japanese islands from Eurasia at ca. 25 Ma, the dynamics have not been fully understood from geophysical and geological perspectives. Here, a series of numerical experiments of visco-elasto-plastic thermo-chemical convection with a free surface is performed using 2-D Cartesian models to investigate the localization of strain in the extending continental lithosphere, with an initial depth of 200 km, and the behavior of continental rifting and breakup. Our results demonstrate that when extension rates at the continental margin were set between 1 and 4 cm yr−1, the time taken for seafloor subsidence and subsequent continental breakup under extensional stress is less than a few million years. During continental rifting, high-shear zones (i.e., high-strain-rate zones) develop under the base of the deforming continental lithosphere, with a strain rate of the order of 10−13 s−1, which is approximately two orders larger than the typical value of the mantle interior. Due to accumulating strain along the base of the deforming lithosphere, excess strain is not concentrated on the shallowest part of the underlying mantle; hence, the spreading ridge that breaks the thick continental lithosphere emerges as a locally weak plate boundary on the Earth's surface. This characteristic is more remarkable as the activation volume of the sublithospheric mantle rock and the resultant viscosity are low under hydrous conditions.

The impact on mantle olivine resulting from carbonated silicate melt interaction

Interactions between carbonated ultramafic silicate magmas and the continental lithospheric mantle results in the formation of dunite—a ubiquitous xenolith type in kimberlites and aillikites. However, whether this process dominantly occurs in the mantle source region or by subsequent interactions between lithospheric mantle fragments and transporting silica-undersaturated magmas during ascent remains debated. Aillikite magmas, which are derived from the fusion of carbonate-phlogopite metasomes under diamond-stability field upper mantle conditions, have a mineralogically more complex source than kimberlites, providing an opportunity to more fully constrain the origin of dunite xenoliths in such deeply sourced carbonated silicate magmas. Here we present a major and trace element study of olivine occurring in xenoliths and as phenocrysts in an aillikite dike located on the southern Superior Craton. We show that olivine within the dunite microxenoliths exhibits extreme enrichment in Al, Cr, Na, and V when compared to equivalent xenoliths carried by kimberlites. We interpret these results as evidence for the presence of carbonate-phlogopite metasomes left residual in the cratonic mantle source during aillikite magma formation. Our results are inconsistent with models of dunite formation through orthopyroxene dissolution upon kimberlite/aillikite magma ascent, supporting an origin for such dunites that is more closely linked to primary melt generation at the base of relatively thick continental lithosphere. Our work demonstrates that it is possible to constrain the precursor composition of cratonic mantle dunite at depth, thereby facilitating the further exploration of how carbonated silicate magmas modify and weaken continental lithospheric roots.

Active Fault Scarps in Southern Malawi and Their Implications for the Distribution of Strain in Incipient Continental Rifts

AbstractThe distribution of deformation during the early stages of continental rifting is an important constraint on our understanding of continental breakup. Incipient rifting in East Africa has been considered to be dominated by slip along rift border faults, with a subsequent transition to focused extension on axial segments in thinned crust and/or with active magmatism. Here, we study high‐resolution satellite data of the Zomba Graben in southern Malawi, an amagmatic rift whose topography is dominated by the west‐dipping Zomba fault. We document evidence for five subparallel fault scarps between 13 and 51 km long spaced ~10–15 km apart. The scarps consist of up to five segments between 4 and 18 km long, separated by minima in scarp height and river knickpoints. The maximum height of each fault scarp ranges from 9.5 ± 4.2 m to 35.3 ± 14.6 m, with the highest scarp measured on the intrabasin Chingale Step fault. We estimate that the scarps were formed by multiple earthquakes of up to Mw7.1 and represent a previously unrecognized seismic hazard. Our calculations show that 55 ± 24% of extensional strain is accommodated across intrabasin faults within the ~50 km wide rift. This demonstrates that a significant proportion of displacement can occur on intrabasin faults during early‐stage rifting, even in thick continental lithosphere with no evidence for magmatic fluids.

Kimberlites: From Deep Earth to Diamond Mines

Kimberlites are rare, enigmatic, low-volume igneous rocks. They are highly enriched in magnesium, volatiles (CO2 and H2O) and incompatible trace elements and are thought to be the most deeply derived (>150 km) magmatic rocks on Earth. Kimberlites occur in ancient and thick continental lithosphere, forming intrusive sheets and composite pipes, commonly in clusters. Despite their rarity, kimberlites have attracted considerable attention because they entrain not only abundant mantle fragments but also diamonds, which can provide a uniquely rich picture of the deep Earth. This issue summarises current thinking on kimberlite petrology, geochemistry, and volcanology and outlines the outstanding questions on the genesis of kimberlites and associated diamond mines.

Continent stabilisation by lateral accretion of subduction zone-processed depleted mantle residues; insights from Zealandia

To examine how the mantle lithosphere stabilises continents, we present a synthesis of the mantle beneath Zealandia in the SW Pacific Ocean. Zealandia, Earth's “8th continent”, occurs over 4.9 M km2 and comprises a fore-arc, arc and back-arc fragment rifted from the Australia–Antarctica Gondwana margin 85 Myr ago. The oldest extant crust is ∼500 Ma and the majority is Permian–Jurassic. Peridotitic rocks from most known locations reveal the underpinning mantle to comprise regional domains varying from refractory (Al2O3 < 1 wt%, olivine Mg# > 92, spinel Cr# up to 80, Pt/Ir < 1) to moderately depleted (Al2O3 = 2–4 wt%, olivine Mg# ∼90.5, spinel Cr# < ∼60). There is no systematic distribution of these domains relative to the former arc configuration and some refractory domains underlie crust that is largely devoid of magmatic rocks. Re-depletion Os model ages have no correlation with depletion indices but do have a distribution that is very similar to global convecting mantle. Whole rock, mineral and isotopic data are interpreted to show that the Zealandia mantle lithosphere was constructed from isotopically heterogeneous convecting mantle fragments swept into the sub-arc environment, amalgamated, and variably re-melted under low-P hydrous conditions. The paucity of mafic melt volumes in most of the overlying crust that could relate to the depleted domains requires melting to have been followed by lateral accretion either during subduction or slab rollback. Recent Australia–Pacific convergence has thickened portions of the Zealandia mantle to >160 km. Zealandia shows that the generation of refractory and/or thick continental lithosphere is not restricted to the Archean. Since Archean cratons also commonly display crust–mantle age decoupling, contain spinel peridotites with extreme Cr# numbers that require low-P hydrous melting, and often have a paucity of mafic melts relative to the extreme depletion indicated by their peridotitic roots, they too may – in part – be compilations of peridotite shallowly melted and then laterally accreted at subduction margins.

Seismic triplication used to reveal slab subduction that had disappeared in the late Mesozoic beneath the northeastern South China Sea

We provided a new study of the seismic velocity structure of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) beneath the northeastern South China Sea using P-wave triplications from two earthquakes at the central Philippines recorded by the Chinese Digital Seismic Network. Through fitting the observed and theoretical triplications modeled by the dynamic ray tracing method for traveltimes, and the reflectivity method for synthetic waveforms using grid-searching method, best-fit velocity models based on IASP91 were obtained to constrain the P-wave velocity structure of the MTZ. The models show that a high-velocity anomaly (HVA) resides at the bottom of MTZ. The HVA is 215km to 225km thick, with a P-wave velocity increment of 1.0% between 450km and 665km or 675km transition and increase by 2.5–3.5% at 665km or 675km depth. The P-wave velocity increment ranges from approximately 0.3% to 0.8% below the 665km or 675km. We proposed that the HVA in the MTZ was caused by the broken fragments of a diving oceanic plate falling into the MTZ at a high angle, and/or by unstable thick continental lithosphere dropping into the MTZ sequentially or almost simultaneously.

About this title - Cratonic Basin Formation: A Case Study of the Parnaíba Basin of Brazil

Cratonic basins are large, distinctive features of the continental crust. They are preferentially developed on thick continental lithosphere, are typically sub-circular in shape and subside over periods of hundreds of millions of years. They are also endowed with significant resources. However, in spite of their location in continental interiors and often well-known geology, the subsidence driving mechanism and tectonic setting of these basins remains controversial.This volume presents both lithospheric and basin scale datasets acquired specifically to interrogate the tectonic process of cratonic basin formation. Focused on the Silurian to Triassic Parnaíba cratonic basin of Brazil, the papers discuss the results of a multidisciplinary basin analysis project comprising new geophysical, geological and geochemical data. This unique dataset enables the characterization of the lithospheric crust and mantle beneath the Parnaíba Basin, constrains the detailed evolution of the basin itself, and enables comparisons with cratonic basins globally. Several convergent themes emerge providing new and powerful constraints for models of the driving mechanisms of these enigmatic basins.

Geodynamics of kimberlites on a cooling Earth: Clues to plate tectonic evolution and deep volatile cycles

Kimberlite magmatism has occurred in cratonic regions on every continent. The global age distribution suggests that this form of mantle melting has been more prominent after 1.2 Ga, and notably between 250–50 Ma, than during early Earth history before 2 Ga (i.e., the Paleoproterozoic and Archean). Although preservation bias has been discussed as a possible reason for the skewed kimberlite age distribution, new treatment of an updated global database suggests that the apparent secular evolution of kimberlite and related CO2-rich ultramafic magmatism is genuine and probably coupled to lowering temperatures of Earth's upper mantle through time.Incipient melting near the CO2- and H2O-bearing peridotite solidus at >200 km depth (1100–1400 °C) is the petrologically most feasible process that can produce high-MgO carbonated silicate melts with enriched trace element concentrations akin to kimberlites. These conditions occur within the convecting asthenospheric mantle directly beneath thick continental lithosphere. In this transient upper mantle source region, variable CHO volatile mixtures control melting of peridotite in the absence of heat anomalies so that low-degree carbonated silicate melts may be permanently present at ambient mantle temperatures below 1400 °C. However, extraction of low-volume melts to Earth's surface requires tectonic triggers. Abrupt changes in the speed and direction of plate motions, such as typified by the dynamics of supercontinent cycles, can be effective in the creation of lithospheric pathways aiding kimberlite magma ascent.Provided that CO2- and H2O-fluxed deep cratonic keels, which formed parts of larger drifting tectonic plates, existed by 3 Ga or even before, kimberlite volcanism could have been frequent during the Archean. However, we argue that frequent kimberlite magmatism had to await establishment of an incipient melting regime beneath the maturing continents, which only became significant after secular mantle cooling to below 1400 °C during post-Archean times, probably sometime shortly after 2 Ga. At around this time kimberlites replace komatiites as the hallmark mantle-derived magmatic feature of continental shields worldwide.The remarkable Mesozoic–Cenozoic ‘kimberlite bloom’ between 250–50 Ma may represent the ideal circumstance under which the relatively cool and volatile-fluxed cratonic roots of the Pangea supercontinent underwent significant tectonic disturbance. This created more than 60% of world's known kimberlites in a combination of redox- and decompression-related low-degree partial melting. Less than 2% of world's known kimberlites formed after 50 Ma, and the tectonic settings of rare ‘young’ kimberlites from eastern Africa and western North America demonstrate that far-field stresses on cratonic lithosphere enforced by either continental rifting or cold subduction play a crucial role in enabling kimberlite magma transfer to Earth's surface.

Plume-stagnant slab-lithosphere interactions: Origin of the late Cenozoic intra-plate basalts on the East Eurasia margin

Intra-plate basalts of ~35–0Ma in East Eurasia formed in a broad backarc region above the stagnant Pacific Plate slab in the mantle transition zone. These basalts show regional-scale variations in Nd-Hf isotopes. The basalts with the most radiogenic Nd-Hf center on the Shandong Peninsula with intermediate Nd-Hf at Hainan and Datong. The least radiogenic basalts occur in the perimeters underlain by the thick continental lithosphere. Shandong basalts possess isotopic signatures of the young igneous oceanic crust of the subducted Pacific Plate. Hainan and Datong basalts have isotopic signatures of recycled subduction materials with billions of years of storage in the mantle. The perimeter basalts have isotopic signatures similar to pyroxenite xenoliths from the subcontinental lithospheric mantle beneath East Eurasia. Hainan basalts exhibit the highest mantle potential temperature (Tp), while the Shandong basalts have the lowest Tp. We infer that a deep high-Tp plume interacted with the subducted Pacific Plate slab in the mantle transition zone to form a local low-Tp plume by entraining colder igneous oceanic lithosphere. We infer that the subducted Izanagi Plate slab, once a part of the Pacific Plate mosaic, broke off from the Pacific Plate slab at ~35Ma to sink into the lower mantle. The sinking Izanagi slab triggered the plume that interacted with the stagnant Pacific slab and caused subcontinental lithospheric melting. This coincided with formation of the western Pacific backarc marginal basins due to Pacific Plate slab rollback and stagnation.

Lithospheric diamond formation as a consequence of methane-rich volatile flooding: An example from diamondiferous eclogite xenoliths of the Karelian craton (Finland)

A collection of 61 xenocrystic and 12 eclogite xenolith-derived diamonds from the 600Ma Lahtojoki kimberlite in central Finland has been investigated. Calculated pressure and temperature conditions for the diamondiferous eclogites are in excess of 5.5GPa and 1300°C, suggesting residence depths greater than 180km, near the base of the Karelian cratonic mantle lithosphere. Geochemically, the eclogite xenoliths have gabbroic compositions showing positive Eu and Sr anomalies, relatively low ΣREE and elevated Al2O3 contents, yet garnets have ambiguous δ18O values of 5.7‰ and 5.9‰. Gabbroic eclogite formation could therefore be linked to either subduction processes during the 1.9Ga Svecofennian orogeny or to cumulate processes during 2.1Ga rift-induced magmatism. Determination of the oxygen fugacity of Lahtojoki eclogite xenoliths from both this work and previous studies suggests that diamond-bearing eclogites may be more reduced (ΔFMQ-3.5) compared to barren eclogites (ΔFMQ-1.7).While recycled oceanic crust protoliths for the eclogites remain a possibility, the carbon isotopic compositions and nitrogen abundances of the Lahtojoki diamonds indicate mantle-derived volatile sources. All diamonds (i.e., loose and eclogite xenolith-derived) display a restricted range of δ13C values from −7.8‰ to −3.7‰ that overlaps with the carbon isotopic composition of Earth’s mantle. The Lahtojoki diamond δ13C values form a negatively skewed distribution, indicating diamond growth from reduced mantle-derived carbon sources such as methane- (CH4) bearing fluids. Nitrogen contents of the Lahtojoki diamonds range from 40 to 1830atomic ppm with a mean of ∼670atomic ppm; these elevated nitrogen contents combined with the close association to eclogites suggest an eclogitic or crustal volatile source. However, the Karelian craton was periodically intruded by ultramafic alkaline magmas since at least 1.8Ga, noting in particular the occurrence of phlogopite-rich kimberlites and olivine lamproites between 1200 and 700Ma. We argue that this punctuated volatile-rich magmatism simultaneously metasomatised the cratonic mantle lithosphere, forming nitrogen enriched phlogopite-bearing metasomes. We propose that reduced, carbon-bearing and nitrogen-rich fluids were remobilized to form the Lahtojoki diamonds. The diamond-forming event(s) most probably occurred during or shortly prior to the entraining kimberlite magmatism as indicated by the diamond nitrogen aggregation systematics. Involvement of reduced diamond-forming fluids is supported by both the negative skewness of Lahtojoki diamond δ13C values and the more reduced nature of the diamondiferous Lahtojoki eclogites compared with their more oxidized barren counterparts. Our results from the diamondiferous eclogites derived from the deepest parts of the Karelian cratonic mantle root are in support of methane being the stable carbon volatile species at the base of thick continental lithosphere.

Wave speed structure of the eastern North American margin

The eastern North American margin (ENAM) is the result of nearly a billion years of continental collision and rifting. To the west of this margin lies thick continental lithosphere of the North American craton, and to the east is oceanic lithosphere in the Atlantic. The substantial changes in lithosphere thickness at this boundary are thought to drive asthenosphere upwelling along the edge of the continent. Through iterative, full-waveform, ambient noise tomography, we observe a heterogeneous low wave speed margin along the continent in the upper mantle. Multiple low wave speed features imaged within the margin are consistent with asthenospeheric upwelling due to edge-driven convection. Also within the margin are high wave speed anomalies that maybe the remnants of eclogitic delamination of the Appalachian crustal root, which contribute to convection at the margin. Edge driven, small-scale convection keeps the margin weak and thus controls the large scale plate tectonic patterns and the crustal deformation. The imaged mantle wave speed anomalies, interpreted as edge-driven convection, correlate with and may increase the likelihood of damaging earthquakes in the eastern portion of North America.

3.30 Ga high-silica intraplate volcanic–plutonic system of the Gavião Block, São Francisco Craton, Brazil: Evidence of an intracontinental rift following the creation of insulating continental crust

High-silica rhyolites having U–Pb zircon ages of 3303±11Ma occur along the eastern border of the Gavião Block (Brazil) associated with the Contendas-Mirante and Mundo Novo supracrustal belts. Unlike many Archean greenstone sequences, they are not interlayered with mafic to intermediate units. Instead, they belong to an inter-related plutonic–volcanic system, together with granitic massifs having similar zircon crystallization ages of ca. 3293±3Ma and 3328±3Ma and plotting along the same geochemical trends as the rhyolites. The rhyolites show well-preserved primary volcanic features such as magma flow textures and euhedral phenocrysts. High emplacement temperatures are indicated by petrographic evidence (β-quartz phenocrysts), zircon saturation temperatures (915–820°C) and geochemical data, especially high SiO2 (74–79wt.%) together with elevated Fe2O3(T) (~3wt.%), MgO (0.5–1.5wt.%) and low Al2O3 (<11wt.%). The rhyolites show homogeneous trace element ratios (La/YbN 4.8±1.8; EuN/Eu* ~0.55; Sr/Y ~0.7) and negative ԐHf(3.3Ga) from 0 to −7, indicating derivation from a single crustal source for both occurrences. Specifically, the rhyolites would have derived from extraction and eruption of highly silicic residual liquid formed by crystallization of granitic magma in a relatively shallow (<10km) reservoir, now represented by the granite massifs. The granite magma was formed by melting or differentiation of material similar to the diorite gneiss that occurs regionally. The 3.30Ga volcanic–plutonic systems formed after a period of crustal growth and stabilization of a thick continental lithosphere, represented by massive 3.40–3.33Ga TTG and medium to high-K calk-alkaline magmatism in the Gavião Block. The 3.30Ga-old rhyolites and granites would therefore have formed in an intracontinental tectonic setting after the formation and stabilization of new continental crust, and accordingly would represent the first stages of rifting and continental break-up. Intraplate magmatism and intracrustal differentiation processes took place on Earth at 3.3Ga and produced magmas that were distinct from Archean TTGs, questioning the reliability (or at least the uniqueness) of “intraplate models” to explain the origin of the latter.
