Electron density measurements from Thomson scattering were made in a theta-pinch plasma. Rayleigh scattering from nitrogen substituted for the plasma in the system was used as a calibration method for these density measurements. A HeNe laser interferometer determined electron line densities independently. The large discrepancy between experimental and theoretical Rayleigh scattering cross sections and, therefore, electron densities from Thomson scattering reported by Skowronek et al. could not be confirmed.
