Lexicon-Based Random Substitute and Word-Variant Voting Models for Detecting Textual Adversarial Attacks
  • Aug 2, 2025
  • Computers
  • Tarik El Lel + 2 more

Adversarial attacks in Natural Language Processing (NLP) present a critical challenge, particularly in sentiment analysis, where subtle input modifications can significantly alter model predictions. In search of more robust defenses against adversarial attacks on sentimental analysis, this research work introduces two novel defense mechanisms: the Lexicon-Based Random Substitute Model (LRSM) and the Word-Variant Voting Model (WVVM). LRSM employs randomized substitutions from a dataset-specific lexicon to generate diverse input variations, disrupting adversarial strategies by introducing unpredictability. Unlike traditional defenses requiring synonym dictionaries or precomputed semantic relationships, LRSM directly substitutes words with random lexicon alternatives, reducing overhead while maintaining robustness. Notably, LRSM not only neutralizes adversarial perturbations but occasionally surpasses the original accuracy by correcting inherent model misclassifications. Building on LRSM, WVVM integrates LRSM, Frequency-Guided Word Substitution (FGWS), and Synonym Random Substitution and Voting (RS&V) in an ensemble framework that adaptively combines their outputs. Logistic Regression (LR) emerged as the optimal ensemble configuration, leveraging its regularization parameters to balance the contributions of individual defenses. WVVM consistently outperformed standalone defenses, demonstrating superior restored accuracy and F1 scores across adversarial scenarios. The proposed defenses were evaluated on two well-known sentiment analysis benchmarks: the IMDB Sentiment Dataset and the Yelp Polarity Dataset. The IMDB dataset, comprising 50,000 labeled movie reviews, and the Yelp Polarity dataset, containing labeled business reviews, provided diverse linguistic challenges for assessing adversarial robustness. Both datasets were tested using 4000 adversarial examples generated by established attacks, including Probability Weighted Word Saliency, TextFooler, and BERT-based Adversarial Examples. WVVM and LRSM demonstrated superior performance in restoring accuracy and F1 scores across both datasets, with WVVM excelling through its ensemble learning framework. LRSM improved restored accuracy from 75.66% to 83.7% when compared to the second-best individual model, RS&V, while the Support Vector Classifier WVVM variation further improved restored accuracy to 93.17%. Logistic Regression WVVM achieved an F1 score of 86.26% compared to 76.80% for RS&V. These findings establish LRSM and WVVM as robust frameworks for defending against adversarial text attacks in sentiment analysis.

Features of Conceptualization and Categorization of Verbal Synonyms for ‘Providing Medical Assistance’ in Contemporary Russian
  • Jul 4, 2025
  • Nauchnyi dialog
  • A A Galiuk + 1 more

This article is dedicated to the exploration of the conceptualization of the process of providing medical assistance through an analysis of the synonyms лечить [lechit’] (‘to treat’), врачевать [vrachevat’] (‘to heal’), and исцелять [istselyat’] (‘to cure’) in order to identify the peculiarities of their categorization within a synchronic perspective of the Russian. The novelty of this study lies in the application of a cognitive-discursive approach to uncover the conceptual characteristics of these lexemes, allowing for a characterization of the verbs based on their cognitive and communicative functions. The relevance of this research is underscored by the inclusion of the examined verbs in an important lexical-semantic group of assistance verbs, as well as the insufficient informative nature of the descriptions provided in Russian explanatory dictionaries and synonym dictionaries. The authors delineate the boundaries of the synonymic group, analyzing situational, cognitive-semantic, stylistic, grammatical, and discursive features of the verbs, while modeling their cognitive scenarios. The categorization features of these verbs are as follows: lechit’ verbalizes the idea of physical healing, which may be subject to evaluation by an observer; vrachevat’ implies healing by an individual possessing a special gift through traditional methods; istselyat’ suggests the removal of physical and mental ailments by another subject with divine assistance or through inanimate objects, utilizing verbal and tactile means of influence in the former case.

Enhancing Paraphrase Evaluation in Marathi Question Answering Systems Using Similarity Techniques
  • Apr 22, 2025
  • Journal of Information Systems Engineering and Management
  • Aarti P Raut

In Natural Language Processing applications, paraphrasing is essential, especially in Question Answering (QA) systems where users may provide distinct yet valid responses to the same questions. This study presents a structured approach for evaluating paraphrased answers in the Marathi language using multiple similarity measures, including Levenshtein Distance, Jaccard Similarity, and Cosine Similarity. The proposed methodology integrates one-to-one word matching, masking techniques, synonym dictionary verification, and dependency parsing to ensure grammatical and syntactic consistency. A dataset comprising 540 questions from the Balbharti Standard 2 textbook, each with three student-generated paraphrased answers, was analyzed. The findings indicate that this approach effectively captures lexical and semantic similarities, enhancing the robustness and fairness of Marathi QA systems. By leveraging multiple similarity measures, this study establishes a systematic framework for paraphrase identification, improving automated answer evaluation.

Synonyms of the Noun kaimietis in the Contemporary Lithuanian Language
  • Apr 3, 2025
  • Acta humanitarica academiae Saulensis
  • Regina Kvašytė + 1 more

Earlier, dictionaries of the Lithuanian language would record only one entry of the meaning of the noun kaimietis, -ė (‘a male / female villager’ in Lithuanian): “a village inhabitant”. Presently, the Dictionary of the Literary Lithuanian Language (Lith. Bendrinės lietuvių kalbos žodynas) indicates another meaning of the word: “pejorative meaning – an uneducated, of bad taste, etc. person who not necessarily comes from a village”. Acknowledging the latter meaning, it remains stating that kaimietis (as a dominant) falls not only to the row of synonyms with the concept “a village man”, but also to the row of similar words (synonymous) bearing a pejorative meaning. Therefore, it is purposeful to review the extended synonymy of the noun kaimietis. The dictionaries of synonyms display the most characteristic synonyms of the first meaning: sodietis (‘a homestead peasant’) and valstietis (‘a peasant’). The word valstietis is included in the row of synonyms characterising the notion “a village man”’, with reference to “a word with a distant meaning”; its definition in the dictionary is “the one who is engaged with the earthwork, agriculture work”. Such definition allows the row of synonyms žemdirbys (‘an agriculturalist’) (as a dominant) joining the row of synonyms of kaimietis meaning “a village inhabitant”: laukininkas (‘a field peasant’), ūkininkas (‘a farmer’), etc.; valstietis is the link between these two rows of synonyms. The second row of synonyms with a similar meaning to that of kaimietis would comprise prastuolis (‘a lowbrow’), prasčiokas (‘a hick’); also, outside the limits of the literary language, it includes a barbarism mužikas (‘a kern’), a jargon word runkelis (‘a person as mindless as a beetroot’).The article maintains a broad notion, meaning, connotation and use of synonyms of the noun kaimietis, -ė; thus, the following words are compared: sodietis; valstietis; žemdirbys, laukininkas, ūkininkas, prastuolis, prasčiokas, mužikas; runkelis. The material was collected from all texts of different styles presented in the Corpus of the Contemporary Lithuanian Language (Lith. Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos tekstynas), also from other texts of the contemporary Lithuanian language.

Semantic and stylistic features of the synonymous group of the English adjective “big”
  • Mar 31, 2025
  • Mìžnarodnij fìlologìčnij časopis
  • Nataliia Zaitseva + 1 more

In contemporary linguistics, the study of lexical semantics – particularly synonymy – has gained renewed importance due to its role in enhancing language precision and expressiveness. The ability to select contextually appropriate synonyms is essential for both effective communication and stylistic variation. This study aimed to explore the semantic and stylistic properties of the English adjective “big” through an analysis of its most common synonyms. Unlike previous studies, this research placed particular emphasis on metaphorical extensions and contextual distinctions within the synonymous group. The methodology combines componential analysis with descriptive and interpretative approaches, supported by data from the British National Corpus via the Sketch Engine tool. Continuous sampling was used to extract relevant lexical items, while collocational patterns and stylistic markers were analysed to uncover distinctions in usage. The findings demonstrated that although “big” and its synonyms share a general notion of largeness, they differ in tone, register, and frequency. For instance, “big” is more informal and emotionally charged, whereas “large” is more frequent in formal and technical contexts. Other adjectives such as “huge”, “enormous”, and “great” exhibit emphatic, metaphorical, or evaluative nuances. The practical significance of this study lies in its applicability to English language teaching, vocabulary development, and the refinement of synonym dictionaries. The results may also be of value to translators, lexicographers, and corpus linguists aiming to enhance lexical precision and stylistic clarity

A PROGRESSIVE TECHNIQUE IN THE IDENTIFICATION OF TEXTUAL INFORMATION OBJECTS
  • Feb 1, 2025
  • Vestnik komp'iuternykh i informatsionnykh tekhnologii
  • A M Khudyakov

The article examines the problem of identifying information objects represented by numerical and symbolic sequences using the method of determining the minimum editorial distance of Damerau–Levenstein. This method is reduced to a general form, which uses weighted probabilities of distortions in the components of personal data of individuals. It was shown that this task belongs to the class of incorrectly set tasks. To solve it, a method was proposed for calculating the similarity values of messages with personal data of individuals using regularization, which takes into account a priori information about the probability of distortions in the description of attributes of identifiable objects. Along with this, other methods of carrying out such calculations were proposed and the most effective ones were selected based on comparative examples. For correct calculations using statistical methods, tables were compiled with the values of the distortions probability weights that were used in the applied formulas. In order to maximize the completeness of the search for personal data of individuals, a dictionary of synonyms of names of a sufficiently large volume was compiled and used. In the process of searching for the necessary information about the personal data of individuals, as a result of identification through databases, a fairly large final information noise with corresponding messages arises. To exclude it, a developed volumetric dictionary of paronyms of names is used, which is a kind of information filter. All this has increased the efficiency of operators in making decisions in the process of searching for the necessary data in large amounts of information.

Realization of the frame «love affair» in the language system and public communication (based on dictionaries and podcasts)
  • Jul 16, 2024
  • Vestnik of Samara University. History, pedagogics, philology
  • L A Bushuyeva

The study is devoted to the explication of the frame LOVE AFFAIR in the lexico-semantic system of the Russian language and speech itself. The research is based on the data from Russian etymological, explanatory dictionaries, dictionaries of synonyms, and modern podcasts. The urgency of the research is determined by the undying interest of scientists to the words that reflect stereotypes of people’s social interaction, which is explained by the importance of looking into ethical categories such as human acts. The lexemes that are examined in the study are selected from dictionaries with the help of the definitional analysis. The method of frame modelling is also used in the study to organize the data into a structure. In order to create a frame model of the act the following procedures are involved: the analysis of the semantics of the words that represent the situation of a love affair, the analysis of the synonyms and the combinability of the words. These procedures help to reconstruct the frame of the object in study. The next step is to verify the frame in modern speech. This paper is the first study of the concept LOVE AFFAIR in modern public communication such as podcasts. The choice of the material is explained by the fact that podcasts look at the most important questions from all angles. The research identifies the most important characteristics of all the elements of the situation «love affair», shows the interrelation of these elements, determines the peculiarities of the explication of the model in the language system and modern speech, marks the prototypical meanings of the structural elements. As a result, the conclusion about semantic broadening of the word affair is made, as well as reinterpretation of traditional negative evaluation of the act «love affair».

  • Mikyung Bong + 1 more

The purpose of this study is to introduce the compilation process and characteristics of the new Yonsei Korean Synonyms Dictionary (YKSD), and to suggest how the synonym dictionary could be used in teaching language. Despite the importance of synonym distinction for language learners and teachers, thus far, synonym dictionaries have generally presented lists of synonyms, in a manner similar to a thesaurus. We would like to introduce the YKSD as a new model for a Korean thesaurus, and discuss what information is presented and how the information is illustrated. We provide the lexical information and description of synonyms based on an analysis of corpus rather than the intuition of dictionary compilers. The macrostructure and microstructure of the YKSD are specially designed to assist in distinguishing synonyms. The contents of this dictionary can be used in various ways in the course of developing teaching materials for language learners. In this study, we will look at the uses of this dictionary.

Analysis of coal mining accident risk factors based on text mining
  • Apr 23, 2024
  • Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part O: Journal of Risk and Reliability
  • Yiman He + 1 more

Frequently occurring coal mine safety accidents have caused great casualties and economic losses. Coal mine intelligence is the core technical support for the high-quality development of the coal industry. The deep integration of coal mining safety production management and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is practically significant to achieve accident prevention. To efficiently identify mining accident risk factors and explore mechanism of coupling between risk factors, this study mined 400 reported cases of mining accidents in Shanxi Province and identified 64 accident risk factors through custom, stopword, synonym dictionary construction, keyword extraction and keyword correlation analysis. Then, this study constructed association rules and a Bayesian causal network. The major risk factors are identified using a comprehensive high-frequency, sensitivity, strength and key path analysis of the Bayesian causal network. The following seven risk factors are found to play a major role in the occurrence of mine accidents: inadequate safety supervision, disordered safety management, illegal organization of production, inadequate staff safety education and training, operation against rules, command against rules and weak safety consciousness among the staff. Finally, a case study is conducted to validate the reliability of the results. This study solves the problem of incomplete extraction of key feature information in coal mine reports and the lack of analyses of coupling mechanisms between coal mine risk factors in traditional accident analysis methods, providing the methodological support for the effective use of unstructured coal mine safety production data for risk analysis.

  • E V Ilyinova

The article presents the study of synonymy and equivalence of lexemenominants of the linguistic and cultural type «business man» in Russian and English languages on the basis of explanatory dictionaries, dictionaries of synonyms, bilingual dictionaries and the corpus of parallel texts in the National Corpus of the Russian Language. According to the results of the study, the synonyms of the word combination деловой человек are identified as follows: бизнесмен, предприниматель, коммерсант, фирмач, делец, деляга, воротила (big businessman). The main English equivalents of this synonymic series are identified as follows: businessman, merchant, owner, employer, operator It was found out that the lexemes businessman, entrepreneur, merchant and the word combination man of business are relatively frequent in the parallel corpus. Feminitives are rather rare or absent. It is concluded that in English the lexeme businessman is the dominant synonymic series. On the material of the parallel corpus the stable correspondence of lexemes entrepreneur and предприниматель, merchant and коммерсант is confirmed. A frequent equivalent of the word combination businessman, not noted in dictionaries, is the word combination a man of business. There is a complete absence of the lexeme entrepreneur among English dictionary equivalents, as well as an obviously insufficient number of equivalents of the lexeme merchant in English-Russian dictionaries. The lexemes businessman, merchant and entrepreneur turn out to be the main nominators of the linguistic and cultural type «business man» in English language culture

Research on Lexical Usage and Lexicographical Practice
  • Mar 26, 2024
  • Lietuvių kalba
  • Vilma Zubaitienė

The article presents research on the usage of Lithuanian lexis and lexicographical works on the Lithuanian language from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. It reveals how scientific research has been related to academic activity and lexicographic work (data gathering, analysis, dictionary development), and vice versa. Talking about the early and mid-20th century, the focus lies on the well-grounded articles on appropriate language use by Kazimieras Būga and on the preparation of the “Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language”, as well as on Jonas Jablonskis’ interest in the standard language, creation of new words, his work on the dictionary of Antanas Juška and his reviews of earlier dictionaries. Jablonskis’ own “Mūsų žodynėlis” [Our Dictionary] is also briefly discussed. Further on, the article talks about the work of Juozas Balčikonis and the beginnings of the academic “Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language”. Particular mention is made of Pranas Skardžius’ and Antanas Salys’ research on word structure and usage. In addition, various articles in language journals as well as the structure and editorial principles of the journal “Kalbos patarėjas” are reviewed. The research in the Soviet era is mainly associated with the lexicographical activities of Jonas Kruopas and Kazys Ulvydas and the editorial work on both the (historical) “Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language” and the “Dictionary of the Present Lithuanian Language”. The research interest of this period lies primarily in the analysis of lexical structure and systemic relations, whereas publication activity focuses on editing special dictionaries (such as dictionaries of synonyms, antonyms, valency, phraseology, and comparisons), and the publication of textbooks and monographs in the field of lexicology. The article gives an overview of studies that analyse the development and change of various lexical items, describe different semantic groups, language variation, and its phrasal components. Furthermore, lexical databases and the information system e.kalba are given an overview. The main focus here lies on reviewing lexical research and lexicographical projects carried out in the 1990s and the early 21st century, and on revealing lexicographical problems.

Маркеры языковой толерантности/интолерантности в современных фразеологических словарях

  • Maria L Lapteva + 1 more

The relevance of the article is determined by the need to identify the phraseological capacity of the Russian language tolerance and intolerance, which cannot be done without referring to the data of modern lexicographic sources. Linguistic tolerance is understood as the presence in the language of verbal means available for characterizing the sphere of communication, unfolding in the categories of “one’s own/someone else’s”, and for applying positive judgments, excluding hostility and aggression, in a speech situation of interaction with those who differ in some way from the speaker. Linguistic intolerance refers to the use of humiliating, offensive, disparaging words and statements. The aim of the article is to identify the degree of phraseological marking of tolerance and intolerance in the system of the modern Russian language. The study was conducted with the use of material from a number of authoritative phraseological dictionaries, as well as dictionaries of lexical and phraseological synonyms published after the year 2000. It has been determined that manifestations of linguistic tolerance/intolerance at the phraseological level are procedural indirectly derived units of the semantic class “Attitude”, i.e., units that reveal interpersonal or social relations. These include phraseological units of emotional and evaluative attitude or external manifestation of attitude, affection for contact or, on the contrary, alienation. The same number of semantic signs of linguistic tolerance and linguistic intolerance has been defined, forming the semantic binomials “condescension - contempt”, “sympathy - condemnation”, “responsiveness - indifference”, “attention - rejection”, “consent - refusal”, “conventionality - impudence”. These meanings are recognized as nationally and culturally significant and relevant, forming a special fragment of the Russian language worldview. Quantitative indicators of the representation of phraseological units in the language demonstrate the asymmetry of tolerance/intolerance. In each semantic pair, verbalizers of intolerance dominate, which indicates the low degree of importance of tolerance for Russian linguistic culture. The analyzed units are included in the current corpus of Russian phraseology, since they are found in the dictionaries of all phraseographic publications of the first quarter of the 21st century. The difficulty of parameterizing phraseological units as verbalizers of linguistic tolerance/intolerance is caused by the borrowed nature of the concept “Tolerance”, and, consequently, by the “alienity” of the system of ideas about what attitude and behavior is considered intolerant. The authors declare no conflicts of interests.

SEMANTIC SYNONYMS IN THE EVEN LANGUAGE
  • Nov 30, 2023
  • Sovremennye issledovaniya sotsialnykh problem
  • Stepanida N Savvinova

Background. The topic of synonymy in the Even language has been insufficiently studied so far. The relevance of the study lies primarily in the fact that semantic synonyms have not yet received sufficient coverage in the Even language, while they play an important role in the development of the lexical system of the language.
The purpose of the study is to identify the characteristics of the functioning of synonyms in the Even language, which is of value in typological comparative studies of both related and unrelated languages. The novelty is that for the first time in the Even language, semantic synonyms by shades of values are considered on the basis of analysis.
Materials and methods. As a source of research, artistic and folklore works, the Even-Russian Dictionary by V.A. Robbek, M.E. Robbek. When studying semantic synonyms of the Even language, the methods of continuous sampling and linguistic analysis was used.
Results. Based on the analysis of semantic synonyms in the Even language, it was revealed that they differ in shades of meaning and introduce an additional concept into the disclosure of the expressed reality, being stylistically neutral. Shades of meaning are expressed in the degree of manifestation of the feature, in the scope of the covered phenomena, actions, in abstractness and specificity, in additional meaning. Semantic synonymy is characteristic of parts of speech such as the noun, adjective, verb, adverb.
Practical implications. The results of the study can be applied in teaching the Even language, compiling a dictionary of synonyms of the Even language.
