Electron-Transfer Thermodynamics, Valence-Electron Hybridization, and Bonding for Iron Compounds

Abstract The electron-transfer thermodynamics (a) for iron compounds (FeXm) and complexes (FeLn) and (b) for their heteroatoms (X/X−) and ligands (L/L−) in combination with other physical data provide insight into the valence-electron hybridization and bonding of the iron center. The basic conclusions are: (a) the chemical bonding of iron in its compounds and complexes is covalent and similar to that of carbon. (b) the electron-transfer processes of iron complexes are ligand-centered, and (c) the iron-ligand covalent bond energies can be evaluated from the electrochemically determined redox thermodynamics.

Thermodynamic and kinetic effects of the organic group in the electrochemical reduction of organocobaloximes

The electrochemical reduction of alkylcobaloximes at the dropping mercury electrode involves an initial one electron transfer process to give a radical anion with the cobalt in the Co II formal oxidation state. The CoC bond cleavage in the radical anion is an homolytic process yielding the Co I cobaloxime and competing with a second electron transfer. The nature of the organic group and of the solvent coordinated in the trans position to the Co atom influences the thermodynamics of the electron transfer and the stability of the radical anion. Electronic and steric effects on the thermodynamics of the first electron transfer can be distinguished. These effects have only a small influence on the kinetics of the first electron transfer.

Thermodynamics of electron transfer and its coupling to vectorial processes in biological membranes

A method is developed to express the flux of an electron transfer reaction as a function of the conjugate force, the redox potential difference, throughout the nonlinear region. The flux can be expressed by a product of the hyperbolic sine of the force, a factor ("redox-poising parameter") determined by the redox potentials of subsystem (in certain cases by local pH's and pK's of subsystems), and some constants. This is analogous to the expression of the flux of a diffusion process by the product of its force and the concentration of the diffusing species. The redox-poising parameter corresponds to the concentration term. The expression is applied to redox chains in which electron transfers are coupled to vectorial processes such as proton translocation or electric current.
