Development of water hyacinth as an alternate biomass source for power generation: Saguling Reservoir Case Study

Abstract Energy security consists of three aspects: the availability of energy sources, the affordability of energy supplies, and the sustainable development of new renewable energy. This paper proposed to help overcome energy problems while solving environmental problems using water hyacinths at Saguling Dam in West Java province, Indonesia. Using an integrated community empowerment approach, the scheme for using water hyacinth is to be developed into an energy source for electricity generation or other thermal energy sources. This scheme is a new concept in developing water hyacinths as an alternative to renewable energy. To ensure the sustainability of this scheme, community support and financial benefits must be established. The results showed that the scheme to use water hyacinth as a source of heat energy is a new scheme in addition to benefiting the community by encouraging local economic development and solving the problem of water hyacinth that disrupts the operation of the Saguling Dam. Utilizing water hyacinth as an alternative energy will improve the community’s economy, which will contribute to increasing the economic activities of a region. This paper steps to develop a design scheme for the use of water hyacinth as alternative energy, especially in rural areas in low- and middle-income countries. Finally, using water hyacinth as alternative energy can guide local communities to encourage them to use biomass resources as an incentive for regional economic prosperity.

Loss model of low pressure compressor for mechanical vapor recompression system

Abstract Low pressure compressor (LPC) serves the role of enhancing pressure levels of secondary steam at nominal pressure ratios (1.5), procured from the evaporator as a primary thermal energy source. A loss model has been proficiently proposed to rapidly predict the performance of the LPC. Instead of conventional lump sum loss equations, the model adopts well-established one-dimensional (1D) loss formulations scattered across scholarly publications. Given an explicit configuration of the LPC, the environmental conditions, rotational velocity, and capacity, static and total temperatures, static and total pressures, pressure reductions, polytropic head, and efficiencies of each individual segment of the compressor can be calculated. Validation of this model was done using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. This model renders it feasible to conduct a parametric examination of the impact of each loss apparatus on the LPC’s capability, thereby aiding designers in substantiating design choices that minimize these losses and consequently positively influencing the comprehensive efficiency.

Procedural and outcome impact of body mass index on pulsed field ablation of atrial fibrillation: insights from the EU-PORIA Registry

Abstract Introduction Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a "single-shot" non thermal ablation modality for atrial fibrillation (AF). In general, obesity is associated with increased risk of AF recurrence after catheter ablation with thermal energy sources. Purpose We aimed to assess the impact of body mass index (BMI) on procedural characteristics, safety, acute efficacy and long-term outcomes of PFA for symptomatic AF. Methods Of 1233 subjects enrolled in the EU-PORIA registry, in our subanalysis we included 1055 patients undergoing de novo pulmonary vein isolation (PVI)-only ablation procedure for symptomatic AF using the pentaspline PFA catheter from March 2021 until May 2022 at seven high-volume European centers. Patients were divided into two groups based on BMI: normal weight (nW, < 25 kg/m2) and overweight (oW, ≥ 25 kg/m2). Overweight patients were further categorized into three subgroups: pre-obesity (pOb, 25-29.9 kg/m2), obesity (Ob, 30-34.9 kg/m2) and severe obesity (sOb, ≥ 35 kg/m2). Clinical and procedural characteristics, complications and follow up data were collected. Results A total of 1055 patients (39% female, mean age 65,7±10,9 years, 65% paroxysmal AF) were enrolled. 32% of patients were normal weight (nW) and 68% overweight (oW). Among oW group, 438 subjects (41%) were assigned to pOb group, 204 (19%) to Ob, and 71 (7%) to sOb. Acute PVI was achieved in 100% of cases. The median skin-to-skin procedure and the median fluoroscopy time were similar between nW and oW and in all investigational subgroups, but radiation exposure increased in line with BMI (p<0.001). Periprocedural complications were 5% in nW, 1.6% in pOb, 3.9% in Ob, and 2.8% in sOb (p=0.06). The Kaplan-Meier estimate of arrhythmia-free survival was 80.2% in nW and 71.9% in oW (p=0.017). Each unit increment in BMI was associated with 4.2% increase in risk of AF/AT recurrence. Severe obese patients presented the highest 1-year AT/AF recurrence rate (37.2%). In the sOb group the rate of recurrence was not influenced by the type of AF (PAF 65.7% vs. pers AF 59.4%; p=0.484). Conclusion Overweight patients seem to experience more AF recurrences even after PFA PVI, mainly driven by a higher recurrence rate for BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2. Weight reduction programs remain crucial, nevertheless, reduced procedural times, good safety profile and acceptable 1-year observed AF/AT freedom make PFA a feasible strategy for AF rhythm control in patients with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2.Freedom from AF/AT recurrence

Electrophysiological characteristics and durability of index pulsed field ablation lesions from redo procedures for atrial arrhythmia recurrences

Abstract Background Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) has been performed using mainly thermal energy sources (radiofrequency, cryo, or laser). Pulsed field ablation (PFA) is a novel energy with interesting safety and effectiveness demonstrated in previous preclinical and clinical trials. Purpose We sought to assess the electrophysiological characteristics and durability of PFA index procedure procedures using a pentaspline PFA catheter as assessed based on redo procedures in patients with AT/AF recurrences. Methods A total of 169 patients (paroxysmal AF (PAF), 120; persistent AF (PsAF), 49) who underwent PFA using a pentaspline PFA catheter in the index procedure from November 2021 to July 2023 were studied. Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) was performed with PFA in all patients with additional PFA lines: i)posterolateral mitral isthmus (MI) ablation in 25, ii) posterior line in 40 patients. Twenty-seven patients (PAF, 11; PsAF, 16) had atrial arrhythmia (atrial tachycardia (AT) or AF) recurrence after a 3-month blanking period (16%). We analyzed the electrophysiological characteristics of previous PFA lesions in 18 (PAF, 8; PsAF, 10) out of 27 patients in whom an activation and voltage mapping using 3-D electroanatomical mapping system was available. Results PV reconnections were identified in 7 of 18 patients (13PVs/69PVs ,18.8%) at the PV-LA junctions and carina regions of both left PVs and right PVs, mainly at the anterior aspect of right PV carina (n=6). In 6 out of 10 redo cases, posterolateral MI line using PFA was performed in the index procedure based on our strategy for PsAF ablation. In these 6 cases with previous MI line using PFA for PsAF ablation endocardial PFA was combined with marshall vein ethanolization(Et-VOM). Additional RF endocardial ablation and in the CS was needed to achieve MI block in 2 (33%) in the index procedure. 3D mapping of redo cases showed MI line gaps in 6/6 (100%). In 3 of those patients, the clinical arrhythmia recurrence was a perimitral AT (50%). Nine of the 10 PsAF patients who underwent a redo procedure had an index procedure complete posterior line. Remapping demonstrated durable block in 7/9 (78%). One of these patients presented with a roof dependent AT diagnosed in the redo procedure. Durable posterior lines received a significantly larger number of PFA deliveries during the index procedure: 16.4±3.3 vs 10.0±2.8 respectively, p=0.041). Conclusion This study based on redo cases after PFA using a pentaspline PFA catheter shows that PFA is associated with high durability for PVI and posterior line ablation. However the durability of MI line are poor, even when combined with VOM ethanolization. Further research is needed to define the optimal number of deliveries required to achieve durable posterior line block.

Biochemical markers of neuro-myocardial damage after pulmonary vein isolation: the effect of different energy sources

Abstract Background Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) by thermal energy, both radiofrequency (RF) and cryoenergy(Cryo), is associated with a significant release of myocardial and collateral neural injury markers. Damage to periatrial ganglionated plexi also results in a substantial change in cardiac autonomic regulations. On the contrary, pulsed electric field (PEF) energy tends to spare cardiac neural tissue. Purpose To quantify the impact of different ablation energy sources that are used for PVI on neuro-myocardial damage by the assessment of specific biomarkers. Methods A study enrolled 85 patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation who underwent PVI (age: 61 ± 12 years, 74% males). In 23 patients, RF energy was delivered by the irrigated-tip catheter, while 30 patients were ablated using a second-generation cryoballoon catheter. In 32 patients, PVI was performed using a multipolar pentaspline catheter and PEF energy. Peripheral venous blood samples for assessing the plasmatic levels of S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), high-sensitivity troponin I and T (hsTnI and hsTnT) were obtained before, immediately after the PVI, and the next day (usually 18-24 hours after the procedure). Study groups were compared regarding absolute biomarker levels and hsTnT/S100B ratio (a surrogate of cardioselectivity). Results Following successful PVI, a significant increase in plasma levels of all biomarkers was observed: DhsTnT = 1040±434 ng/L, 1731±830 ng/L and 1010±397 ng/L; DhsTnI = 1504±918 ng/L, 16464±11911 ng/L and 10789±7589 ng/L; DS100B: 0.04±0.02 mg/L, 0.03±0.04 mg/L and 0.14±0.08 mg/L; DNSE: 34±72 ng/mL, 27±53 ng/mL and 45±52 ng/mL (all with P <0.001) for RF, PEF and Cryo groups, respectively. A direct comparison of maximal biomarker levels between study groups is depicted in the Figure. The hsTnT/S100B ratio was 23±14, 12±6, and 6±3 in PEF, RF, and Cryo groups, respectively (ANOVA P <0.01), indicating that PEF was 1.9-times and 3.8-times more cardioselective than RF and Cryo, respectively. Following the PVI, the heart rate accelerated by 2±8, 13±14, and 9±11 bpm in the PEF, RF, and Cryo groups, respectively. No correlation was observed between S100B release and HR acceleration (R = 0.07, P = 0.55). Conclusion Compared to thermal energy sources, PEF energy induces more specific damage to cardiomyocytes than cardiac nerves. There was no correlation between S100B release and HR acceleration.

Analysis of the Cooperation of a Compressor Heat Pump with a PV System

The decarbonization of heating systems is one of the present political and legislative directions of the European Union and its Member States. The main activities concern the energy performance of buildings and energy efficiency. The mentioned UE directives are the basis for the financial support of high-emission fossil fuel thermal energy source replacement with emission-free ones, in particular heat pumps. Other aspects are the support of PV installations and the thermal insulation of buildings. 85% of EU buildings were built before 2000, and among those, 75% have poor energy performance. Therefore, a significant number of buildings have only high-temperature wall radiators, and this was a motivation to prepare this article. The main innovation of this research was a new theoretical design of a high-temperature heat pump based on ecological refrigerants. The presented solution allows wall radiators to receive a hot water supply with temperatures of up to 85 °C during external temperatures of up to −20 °C. Typical heat pumps do not have these kinds of parameters, so the authors decided to verify the possibility of operating this device in such a wide temperature range. Another important aspect was the analysis of PV support. Finally, this paper investigates the possibility of heating an energy-efficient house with the newly designed high-temperature heat pump. Depending on the location in Poland, i.e., Suwałki, Warsaw, and Wrocław, the total electric energy supplied to the compressors was 2538–3364 kWh. The energy provided by the PV to supply power to the compressors is 482–570 kWh. The achieved PV energy self-consumption is 16.9–19.0%. The Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of the heat pump is 1.825–2.038 without PV and 2.515–2.970 with PV.

Heat Effects during the Operation of Lead-Acid Batteries

Thermal events in lead-acid batteries during their operation play an important role; they affect not only the reaction rate of ongoing electrochemical reactions, but also the rate of discharge and self-discharge, length of service life and, in critical cases, can even cause a fatal failure of the battery, known as “thermal runaway.” This contribution discusses the parameters affecting the thermal state of the lead-acid battery. It was found by calculations and measurements that there is a cooling component in the lead-acid battery system which is caused by the endothermic discharge reactions and electrolysis of water during charging, related to entropy change contribution. Thus, under certain circumstances, it is possible to lower the temperature of the lead-acid battery during its discharging. The Joule heat generated on the internal resistance of the cell due to current flow, the exothermic charging reaction, and above all, the gradual increase in polarization as the cell voltage increases during charging all contribute to the heating of the cell, overtaking the cooling effect. Of these three sources of thermal energy, Joule heating in polarization resistance contributes the most to the temperature rise in the lead-acid battery. Thus, the maximum voltage reached determines the slope of the temperature rise in the lead-acid battery cell, and by a suitably chosen limiting voltage, it is possible to limit the danger of the “thermal runaway” effect. The overall thermal conditions of the experimental cell are significantly affected by the ambient temperature of the external environment and the rate of heat transfer through the walls of the calorimeter. A series of experiments with direct temperature measurement of individual locations within a lead-acid battery uses a calorimeter made of expanded polystyrene to minimize external influences. A hitherto unpublished phenomenon is discussed whereby the temperature of the positive electrode was lower than that of the negative electrode throughout the discharge, while during charging, the order was reversed and the temperature of the positive electrode was higher than that of the negative electrode throughout the charge. The authors relate this phenomenon to the higher reaction entropy change of the active mass of the positive electrode than that of the negative electrode.

Plasmonic Nanoparticles Boost Solar-to-Electricity Generation at Ambient Conditions.

Sunlight-to-electricity conversion using solar thermoelectric generators (STEGs) is a proven technology to meet our ever-growing energy demand. However, STEGs are often operated under a vacuum with customized thermoelectric materials to achieve high performance. In this work, the incorporation of plasmonic gold nanoparticle (AuNP) based solar absorbers enabled the efficient operation of STEGs under ambient conditions with commercially available thermoelectric devices. AuNPs enhanced the performance of STEG by ∼9 times, yielding an overall solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency of ∼9.6% under 7.5 W cm-2 solar irradiance at ambient conditions. Plasmonic heat dissipated by AuNPs upon solar irradiation was used as the thermal energy source for STEGs. High light absorptivity, photothermal conversion efficiency (∼95%), and thermal conductivity of AuNPs enabled the efficient generation and transfer of heat to STEGs, with minimal radiative and convective heat losses. The power generated from plasmon-powered STEGs is used to run electrical devices as well as produce green hydrogen via the electrolysis of water.

Laser-induced indirect ignition of non-premixed turbulent shear layers

This study uses direct numerical simulations to investigate the forced ignition of temporally-evolving turbulent subsonic shear layers separating a gaseous stream of methane (CH4) and a stagnant gas environment of molecular oxygen (O2). Ignition is forced by a thermal-energy source that heats up a small volume of gas during periods of time much shorter than the characteristic acoustic time scale. The kernel, including its initial rounded conical shape, resembles experimental observations after optical breakdown is achieved in a gas irradiated by a focused laser. Particular emphasis is placed on ignition phenomena observed when the laser is focused on the O2 environment outside the turbulent shear layer, where the local composition is far beyond the lean flammability limit. This represents an indirect mode of non-premixed ignition that develops after a relatively long period of time has passed since laser-energy deposition, when the eddies near the oxidizer edge of the turbulent shear layer are intercepted by a baroclinically-generated subsonic vortex of hot dissociated O2 ejected from the laser-energy deposition zone. The success of indirect ignition depends on the orientation of the laser beam, the thickness of the shear layer, and the kernel standoff distance from the oxidizer edge of the shear layer. An ignition Damköhler number is defined that accounts for these averaged effects in six different simulation cases. For near-unity ignition Damköhler numbers, the solution is also sensitive to the local instantaneous flow field prevailing near the oxidizer edge of the shear layer, in that a modification of the instantaneous pre-deposition flow field, while preserving its turbulence statistics, can produce different ignition outcomes.Novelty and significance statement This work investigates forced ignition in a canonical flow configuration – a non-premixed turbulent CH4/O2 shear layer – and analyzes mechanisms by which ignition can be unexpectedly achieved in adverse conditions. In particular, an ensuing laser-generated advection of hot dissociated gas is observed to ignite the shear layer even when the mixture at the laser focal point is not flammable, an observation first made in early experiments. This flow phenomenon, whose consequences on ignition of non-premixed turbulent flows have not previously been analyzed by direct numerical simulation, can significantly separate the laser-energy deposition zone from the ignition location and is linked to baroclinically generated vorticity due to the rounded conical shape of the energy kernel. The phenomenology analyzed here may impact the design of laser-based ignition systems for chemical propulsion.

Development of a scale to determine electricity generation preferences of Turkish citizens

Citizens' views should be clearly and openly presented to policymakers in decision-making processes regarding energy policies. Policy makers need to take into account the views of the public in order to provide support for the policies they will pursue. In this study, which was conducted using quantitative research methods, a scale was developed to determine the electricity generation preferences of individuals. Within the scope of the study, the validity and reliability analyses of this scale, whose items were developed by the researchers based on the literature review, were carried out. The results of the analyses show that the items under different factors exemplify similar behaviors and the internal consistency of the scale is high. The scale consists of 15 items and three sub-dimensions related to renewable, nuclear and thermal energy sources. Using this scale, the preferences of individuals in certain regions regarding energy production can be determined in a valid and reliable manner.

Identifying the opportunities for sustainable bitumen production in India.

The present study assessed the environmental impacts due to bitumen production in India using life cycle assessment approach. The impacts were calculated for production of 1 t of bitumen and system boundary covered extraction of resources, processing at refinery, transportation of bitumen and storage at the production site. In this study, five scenarios were considered to estimate the impacts reduction assuming different future electricity mix and thermal energy source. Crude oil extraction phase had contributed highest (91%) followed by refinery phase (4%), then transportation (3%) and at last storage of bitumen (2%). The normalization results found that the bitumen production had highest impacts on abiotic depletion fossil and lowest impact on eutrophication. Scenario S4 had the least environmental impacts and provided the overall reductions of 33% compared to the baseline scenario. Scenario S4 reduced the impacts significantly on acidification (51%), eutrophication (30%), and human toxicity (71%), but the reductions were not significant on global warming (11%) and increased the impacts on abiotic depletion fossil (1%). The results of sensitivity analysis found that thermal energy obtained from hard coal consumed during bitumen production is the most sensitive parameter for all the impact categories. The uncertainty analysis showed that the results of this study are reliable and had standard deviation less than 5% for all the impact categories. The findings of the present study will help the decision makers and concerned authorities to reduce the environmental impacts from bitumen production in India.

Determining heat and mass exchange kinetic in a column heat exchanger with direct phases contact

The object of this study was the processes of heat and mass transfer in a column heat exchanger with direct phases contact. The investigated problem is related to the need to determine the estimates of the kinetic characteristics of heat exchange during the concentration of solutions in a contact heat exchanger equipped with dual-flow trays. In particular, it was assumed that the determination of the influence of the gas velocity in the apparatus and the density of liquid irrigation of the plates, as well as the geometry of the plates, on the kinetic coefficients would make it possible to reveal the patterns of heat and mass exchange between the liquid and the air in contact with it in the column apparatus. It was determined that to increase the intensity of mass transfer in the gas and heat transfer in the liquid, it is necessary to increase the gas velocity and irrigation density. Then the gas velocity and irrigation density have approximately the same effect on the intensity of mass transfer in the gas and heat transfer in the liquid. When studying the effect of the geometry of the plate on the kinetic coefficients of heat transfer in the liquid and mass transfer in the gas, it was established that the value of the portion of the free cross section of the plate has a decisive influence on the value of the considered kinetic coefficients. A generalized equation was built, which makes it possible not only to calculate the enthalpy transfer coefficient during the interaction of sodium chloride solution with air but also to determine the limiting stage of this process. The results could be used to design a unit for concentrating a hot solution of sodium chloride by evaporating water during blowing with air in a contact heat exchanger. This would make it possible to obtain crystalline sodium chloride using secondary energy resources and other non-traditional sources of thermal energy

Assessing the Effectiveness of an Innovative Thermal Energy Storage System Installed in a Building in a Moderate Continental Climatic Zone

In the present work, the operating results from an innovative, renewable, energy-based space-heating and domestic hot water (DHW) system are shown. The system used solar thermal energy as its primary source and was assisted by a shallow geothermal application in order to accommodate the space-heating and DHW needs of a domestic building in Austria. The system incorporated phase-change materials (PCMs) in specially designed containers to function as heat-storage modules and provide an energy storage capability for both the space-heating and DHW subsystems. This system was designed, implemented, and tested under real operating conditions in a building for a period of one year. The operating and energy results for the system are demonstrated in this work. The system was compared with a conventional one, and a reduction in the primary energy consumption equal to 84.3% was achieved. The maintenance and operating costs of the system were reduced by 79.7% compared to the conventional system, thus significantly contributing to the NZEB target of the building. The newly proposed system, although presenting an increased operating complexity, utilizes an innovative self-learning control system that manages all of its operations. The combination of a solar thermal energy source with thermal energy storage increases the use of renewable energy by extending the capacity of the system beyond the solar hours and using excess solar energy for space-heating needs. The thermal energy storage unit also increases the energy and economic efficiency of the geothermal heat pump by operating it during the hours of a reduced electricity tariff and using the stored energy during hours of a high electricity demand. The cost for the installation of such a system is higher than a conventional one, but due to the significantly decreased operating costs, the pay-back period was calculated to be 8.7 years.

Analysis of the cycle arrangement of a binary geothermal power plant using a low- and medium-temperature source

The cycle arrangement of a binary-type GeoPP using a thermal energy source with a temperature of 80 ÷ 150 °C was considered; its elements and structural connections were substantiated. A method was proposed, numerical studies were carried out to find optimal working bodies for the ORC and parameters for the operation of GeoPP in nominal and variable modes. The greatest efficiency and power in the considered modes belongs to the GeoPP operating by the ORC on the R141b freon. Since this freon is prohibited for use as having an ozone-depleting chemical structure, R245fa was selected among the ozone-safe freons considered, for which the electrical power and absolute electrical efficiency of the GeoPP have the best values at a source temperature of 80 ÷ 120 °C. R245ca and R365mfc are the most effective freons for the ORC of GeoPPs at > 120 °C.

Selective Laser Sintering versus Multi Jet Fusion: A Comprehensive Comparison Study Based on the Properties of Glass Beads‐Reinforced Polyamide 12

Selective laser sintering (SLS) and multi jet fusion (MJF) are the most widespread powder bed fusion additive manufacturing techniques for fabricating polymeric parts since they offer great design flexibility, productivity, and geometrical accuracy. However, these technologies differ in the thermal energy source used to melt the powders as well as the innovative use of printing agents featured in the latter one to promote material consolidation and to avoid thermal bleeding at the part contours. The use of a single powder made of glass beads‐reinforced polyamide 12 (PA12/GB) for the fabrication of MJF and SLS samples makes possible a systematic comparison of the printed parts properties. A thoughtful analysis of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the samples reveals differences and peculiarities between the two technologies. SLS exhibits lower porosity and higher mechanical performances when the parts are printed along the build plane thanks to the powerful heating ensured by the laser. In contrast, MJF samples show higher mechanical isotropy with great flexural and tensile behavior for vertically oriented parts. The role of glass beads in the material behavior is defined by their mechanical properties, meaning higher rigidity and lower strength compared to neat PA12, and fracture mechanism.

Left atrial posterior wall isolation using pulsed-field ablation: procedural characteristics, safety, and mid-term outcomes

BackgroundNon-pulmonary vein (PV) ablation targets such as posterior wall isolation (PWI) have been tested in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). Pulsed-field ablation (PFA) offers a novel ablation technology possibly able to overcome the obstacles of incomplete PWI and concerns of damage to adjacent structures compared to thermal energy sources. Our aim was to assess procedural characteristics, safety, and mid-term outcomes of patients undergoing PWI using PFA in a clinical setting.MethodsPatients undergoing PFA-PVI with PWI were included. First-pass isolation was controlled using a multipolar mapping catheter.ResultsOne hundred consecutive patients were included (median age 69 [IQR 63–75] years, 33 females (33%), left atrial size 43 [IQR 39–47] mm, paroxysmal AF 24%). Median procedure time was 66 (IQR 59–77) min, and fluoroscopy time was 11 (8–14) min. PWI using PFA was achieved in 100% of patients with a median of 19 applications (IQR 14–26). There were no major complications. Overall, in 15 patients (15%), recurrent AF/AT was noted during a median follow-up of 144 (94–279) days.ConclusionsPWI using PFA appears safe and results in high acute isolation rates and high arrhythmia survival during mid-term follow-up. Further randomized trials are essential and warranted.Graphical abstract

This paper will analyze the integration of a combined- gas turbine with intercooler and a multi-stage flash (MSF) desalination plant for the simultaneous generation of electricity and supply of water and improved performance. The paper will also examine the calculation of the production cost and the capital cost of the MSF desalination plant. The thermo-economic analysis of the study was conducted using the IPSEpro software system. Also, exergy losses of the gas turbine and MSF desalination unit were also calculated. The desalination plant uses the exhaust gases from the gas turbine, as a form of thermal energy, and discharges to feed the seawater heater. A portion of the desalinated water is used to cool the compressed air in the intercooler heat exchanger. Results indicate the improvement in the gas turbine’s performance when desalinated water is used for the intercooler between compressor stages, as the power output increased by 59% over the the simple gas cycle and found decrease with an increase in the ambient temperature. The desalinated water cost was calculated to be $1.7 per cubic meter after determining the optimal configuration and operating conditions. A decrease in steam cost by 36% was observed when the waste heat from the gas turbine was used as the source of thermal energy. Part of this reduction can be explained by the observation that the desalination plant’s pumps consume part of the power generated by the gas turbine.

Thermal properties of novel phase change materials based on protic ionic liquids containing ethanolamines and stearic acid for efficient thermal energy storage.

In the field of energy harvesting, phase change materials (PCMs) hold great promise. 2-hydroxyethylammonium stearate ([HEA]Ste), bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium stearate ([DHEA]Ste), and tris(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium stearate ([THEA]Ste) ionic liquids (ILs) demonstrate promising capabilities to enhance thermal energy storage (TES) performance within the 30-100 °C temperature range. This research presents these ILs as PCMs for the first time, emphasizing their environmentally friendly characteristics, safety profile, and cost-effectiveness. The chemical composition and microstructure of these PCMs were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), while differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was employed to assess their latent heat of fusion and specific heat capacity. Furthermore, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) was utilized to evaluate the thermal stability of these ILs. In addition, valuable insights into the surface properties and behavior of PCMs at the nanoscale are provided using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Results show that the latent heats of fusion for [HEA]Ste, [DHEA]Ste, and [THEA]Ste are about 171.12, 152.58, and 136.55 kJ kg-1, respectively. Also, thermal stability analysis shows the maximum stability (99.5%) for [HEA]Ste. Ultimately, a custom-built setup featuring a cell containing a PCM derived from synthesized ILs and a commercially available thermoelectric generator (TEG) was employed to measure live voltage (V) in the conversion of heat energy into electrical power. On the other hand, specifically in this measurement we recorded the output voltage (open circuit case) of the TEG device versus time and demonstrated that after turning off the thermal energy source, the proposed system provides the electrical energy for a while (more than 2 hours).

Distributed energy generation based on jet-vortex bioheat generators

The article explores transforming Ukraine’s energy system using the “Smart Grid” concept and distributed generation. It emphasizes the need for decentralizing thermal and electric energy sources with small-scale, renewable local biofuels. The significance of thermochemical distribution systems for bio-waste using jet-vortex generator-incinerators in energy-intensive technologies is highlighted. New methods for generating thermal energy in agro-industrial processes, such as grain drying, are proposed. Heat-technical means for bio-waste decomposition, heat exchange, and combustion product utilization have been developed. Production tests of automated jet-vortex generator-incinerators were conducted, considering variable technological parameters. The cost of thermal energy for grain drying is significantly lower than traditional methods. The process, with a functional heat exchanger, uses preheated clean air, improving grain quality. A cogeneration plant project, based on a generator-incinerator and air turbine, is proposed to address Ukraine’s electricity sector challenges. This plant converts thermal energy into mechanical energy using a heat exchanger and compressor. Electrical energy is produced with an electromechanical converter to meet the thermal-technical module’s needs. The cogeneration plant achieves a total efficiency of approximately 80%.

The concept of transitioning centralized heating systems in multi-apartment buildings to decentralized electric water heating

In recent years, there have been significant changes in the perception of the feasibility of using electricity as a source of thermal energy for household heating systems. Electric boilers are considered an important element in the energy transition from the use of hydrocarbon fuels to renewable energy. For a modern comprehensive approach in assessing the feasibility of various heating systems, it is necessary to consider not only the operational costs but also the energy, environmental, economic requirements, safety of operation, and maintenance costs, from both the consumer’s perspective and in terms of the historically evolved role of the state and the social significance of providing heating to the population. This study compares these factors for centralized heating systems, apartment-based systems using wall-mounted gas boilers, autonomous systems using boilers on different types of fuel, and water electric heating systems. Conclusions are presented on the advisability of gradually transitioning the heating supply of multi-apartment buildings from centralized to individual apartment-based electric water heating.
