Probing the energy and luminosity-dependent spectro-timing properties of RX J0440.9+4431 with AstroSat

ABSTRACT The Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0440.9+4431 went through a giant outburst in December 2022 with a peak flux of $\sim$2.3 Crab in 15–50 keV. We studied the broad-band timing and spectral properties of RX J0440.9+4431 using four AstroSat observations, where the source transited between subcritical and supercritical accretion regimes. Pulsations were detected significantly above 100 keV. The pulse profiles were found to be highly luminosity- and energy-dependent. A significant evolution in the pulse profile shape near the peak of the outburst indicates a possible change in the accretion mode and beaming patterns of RX J0440.9+4431. The rms pulsed fraction was luminosity- and energy-dependent, with a concave-like feature around 20–30 keV. The depth of this feature varied with luminosity, indicating changes in the accretion column height and proportion of reflected photons. The broad-band continuum spectra were best fitted with a two-component Comptonization model with a blackbody component or a two-blackbody component model with a thermal Comptonization component. A quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at 60 mHz was detected at a luminosity of $2.6 \times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which evolved into 42 mHz at $1.5 \times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The QPO rms were found to be energy dependent with an overall increasing trend with energy. For the first time, we found the QPO frequency varying with photon energy in an X-ray pulsar, which poses a challenge in explaining the QPO with current models such as the Keplarian and beat frequency model. Hence, more physically motivated models are required to understand the physical mechanism behind the mHz QPOs.

A Timing View of the Additional High-energy Spectral Component Discovered in the Black Hole Candidate Swift J1727.8-1613

We present an energy-dependent analysis for the type-C quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the black hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8–1613 using Insight-HXMT observations. We find that the QPO fractional rms at energies above 40 keV is significantly higher than that below 20 keV. This is the first report of a high energy (HE) rms excess in the rms spectrum of a black hole X-ray binary. In the high energy band, an extra hard component is observed in addition to the standard thermal Comptonization component at a similar energy band. The value of the QPO HE rms excess is not only correlated with the disk parameters and the photon index of the standard Comptonization component but also exhibits a moderate positive correlation with the flux of the additional hard spectral component. No features in the QPO phase-lag spectra are seen corresponding to the additional hard component. We propose that the additional hard component in the spectrum may originate from jet emission and the associated QPO HE rms excess can be explained by the precession of the jet base.

Unveiling the accretion scenario of BH-ULXs using XMM–Newton observations

ABSTRACT We present a comprehensive spectrotemporal analysis of five ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with central object likely being a black hole, using archival XMM–Newton observations. These sources, namely NGC1313 X−1, NGC5408 X-1, NGC6946 X−1, M82 X−1, and IC342 X−1, reveal short-term variability with fractional variance of 1.42$-27.28~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\, $ and exhibit Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs) with frequency νQPO ∼ 8−667 mHz. Long-term evolution of ULXs energy spectra (0.3–10 keV; excluding M82 X−1) are described satisfactorily with a model combination that comprises a thermal Comptonization component (nthComp, yielding Γnth ∼ 1.48–2.65, kTe ∼ 1.62–3.76 keV, τ ∼ 8–20, y-par∼1.16–6.24) along with a standard disc component (diskbb, kTin ∼ 0.16–0.54 keV). We find that these ULXs generally demonstrate anticorrelation between disc luminosity and inner disc temperature as $L_{\rm disc} \propto T_{\rm in}^\alpha$, where α = −3.58 ± 0.04 for NGC1313 X−1 and IC342 X−1, α = −8.93 ± 0.11 for NGC6946 X−1, and α = −10.31 ± 0.10 for NGC5408 X−1. We also obtain a linear correlation between bolometric luminosity Lbol and Γnth that indicates spectral softening of the sources when Lbol increases. We observe that in presence of QPO, Comptonized seed photon fraction varies in between $\sim 5-20~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\, $, while the Comptonized flux contribution (50$-90~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}\, $) dominates over disc flux. Utilizing νQPO and Lbol, we constrain ULXs mass by varying their spin (ak) and accretion rate ($\dot{m}$). We find that NGC6946 X−1 and NGC5408 X−1 seem to accrete at sub-Eddington accretion rate provided their central sources are rapidly rotating, whereas IC342 X−1 and NGC1313 X−1 can accrete in sub/super-Eddington limit irrespective to their spin values.

Wide-band view of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations of GRS 1915+105 in ‘softer’ variability classes observed with AstroSat

ABSTRACT We present a comprehensive temporal and spectral analysis of the ‘softer’ variability classes (i.e. θ, β, δ, ρ, κ, ω and γ) of the source GRS 1915+105 observed by AstroSat during the 2016−2021 campaign. Wide-band (3−60 keV) timing studies reveal the detection of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) with frequencies of 68.14−72.32 Hz, significance of 2.75−11σ and rms amplitude of 1.48–2.66 per cent in δ, κ, ω and γ variability classes. Energy-dependent power spectra show that HFQPOs are detected only in the 6−25 keV energy band and rms amplitude is found to increase (1–8 per cent) with energy. The dynamical power spectra of the κ and ω classes demonstrate that HFQPOs seem to be correlated with high count rates. We observe that wide-band (0.7−50 keV) energy spectra can be described by the thermal Comptonization component (nthComp) with a photon index (Γnth) of 1.83−2.89 along with an additional steep (ΓPL ∼ 3) power-law component. The electron temperature (kTe) of 1.82−3.66 keV and optical depth (τ) of 2−14 indicate the presence of a cool and optically thick corona. In addition, nthComp components, 1.97 ≲ Γnth ≲ 2.44 and 1.06 × 10−8 ≲ Fnth (erg cm−2 s−1) ≲ 4.46 × 10−8, are found to dominate in the presence of HFQPOs. Overall, these findings infer that HFQPOs are possibly the result of the modulation of the ‘Comptonizing corona’. Further, we find that the bolometric luminosity (0.3−100 keV) of the source lies within the sub-Eddington (3–34 per cent LEdd) regime. Finally, we discuss and compare the obtained results in the context of existing models on HFQPOs.

Discovery and Long-term Broadband X-Ray Monitoring of Galactic Black Hole Candidate MAXI J1803–298

Abstract We report the results from the broadband X-ray monitoring of the new Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1803−298 with MAXI/GSC and Swift/BAT during its outburst. After the discovery on 2021 May 1, the soft X-ray flux below 10 keV rapidly increased for ∼10 days, then gradually decreased over five months. In the brightest phase, the source exhibited the state transition from the low/hard state to the high/soft state via the intermediate state. The broadband X-ray spectrum during the outburst is well described with a disk blackbody plus its thermal or nonthermal Comptonization. Before the transition, the source spectrum is described by a thermal Comptonization component with a photon index of ∼1.7 and an electron temperature of ∼30 keV, while a strong disk blackbody component is observed after the transition. The spectral properties in these periods are consistent with the low/hard state and the high/soft state, respectively. A sudden flux drop with a duration of a few days, unassociated with a significant change in the hardness ratio, was found in the intermediate state. A possible cause of this variation is that the mass accretion rate rapidly increased at the disk transition, which induced a strong Compton-thick outflow and scattered out the X-ray flux. Assuming a nonspinning black hole, we estimate the black hole mass of MAXI J1803−298 to be 5.8 ± 0.4 ( cos i / cos 70 ° ) − 1 / 2 ( D / 8 kpc ) M ⊙ (where i and D are the inclination angle and the distance, respectively) from the inner disk radius obtained in the high/soft state.

Spectral Properties of the Soft X-Ray Transient MAXI J0637−430 Using AstroSat

Abstract Soft X-ray transients are systems that are detected when they go into an outburst, wherein their X-ray luminosity increases by several orders of magnitude. These outbursts are markers of the poorly understood change in the spectral state of these systems from the low/hard state to the high/soft state. We report the spectral properties of one such soft X-ray transient: MAXI J0637−430, with data from the SXT and LAXPC instruments on board the AstroSat mission. The source was observed for a total of ∼60 ks in two observations on 2019 November 8 and 21 soon after its discovery. Flux-resolved spectral analysis of the source indicates the presence of a multicolor blackbody component arising from the accretion disk and a thermal Comptonization component. The stable low temperature (∼0.55 keV) of the blackbody component points to a cool accretion disk with an inner disk radius of the order of a few hundred kilometers. In addition, we report the presence of a relativistically broadened Gaussian line at 6.4 keV. The disk-dominated flux and photon power-law index of ⪆2 and a constant inner disk radius indicate the source to be in the soft state. From the study we conclude that MAXI J0637−430 is a strong candidate for a black hole X-ray binary.

Spectral and Timing Analysis of NuSTAR and Swift/XRT Observations of the X-Ray Transient MAXI J0637–430

Abstract We present results for the first observed outburst from the transient X-ray binary source MAXI J0637–430. This study is based on eight observations from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and six observations from the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory X-Ray Telescope (Swift/XRT) collected from 2019 November 19 to 2020 April 26 as the 3–79 keV source flux declined from 8.2 × 10−10 to 1.4 × 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1. We see the source transition from a soft state with a strong disk-blackbody component to a hard state dominated by a power-law or thermal Comptonization component. NuSTAR provides the first reported coverage of MAXI J0637–430 above 10 keV, and these broadband spectra show that a two-component model does not provide an adequate description of the soft-state spectrum. As such, we test whether blackbody emission from the plunging region could explain the excess emission. As an alternative, we test a reflection model that includes a physical Comptonization continuum. Finally, we also test a spectral component based on reflection of a blackbody illumination spectrum, which can be interpreted as a simple approximation to the reflection produced by returning disk radiation due to the bending of light by the strong gravity of the black hole. We discuss the physical implications of each scenario and demonstrate the value of constraining the source distance.

Revealing the nature of the transient source MAXI J0637-430 through spectro-temporal analysis

ABSTRACT We study the spectral and temporal properties of MAXI J0637-430 during its 2019–2020 outburst using Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), AstroSat , and Swift–XRT data. The source was in a disc dominant state within a day of its detection and traces out a ‘c’ shaped profile in the HID, similar to the ‘mini’-outbursts of the recurrent BHB 4U 1630-472. Energy spectrum is obtained in the 0.5−10 keV band with NICER and Swift–XRT, and 0.5−25 keV with AstroSat. The spectra can be modelled using a multicolour disc emission (DISKBB) convolved with a thermal Comptonization component (thcomp). The disc temperature decreases from 0.6 to 0.1 keV during the decay with a corresponding decrease in photon index (Γ) from 4.6 to 1.8. The fraction of Compton-scattered photons (fcov) remains <0.3 during the decay upto 2020 mid-January and gradually increases to 1 as the source reaches hard state. Power density spectra generated in the 0.01−100 Hz range display no quasi-periodic oscillations, although band-limited noise is seen towards the end of 2020 January. During AstroSat observations, Γ lies in the range 2.3−2.6 and rms increases from 11 to 20 per cent, suggesting that the source was in an intermediate state till 2019 November 21. Spectral fitting with the relativistic disc model (kerrbb), in conjunction with the soft-hard transition luminosity, favour a black hole with mass $3\!-\!19\, \mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$ with retrograde spin at a distance <15 kpc. Finally, we discuss the possible implications of our findings.

An extreme ultraluminous X-ray source X-1 in NGC 5055

Aims. We analysed multi-epoch X-ray data of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5055 X-1, with luminosity up to 2.32 × 1040 erg s−1, to constrain the physical parameters of the source. Methods. We performed a timing and spectral analysis of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. We used spectral models that assume the emission is from an accreting black hole system. We fit the data with a multicolour disk combined with a powerlaw or a thermal Comptonization (NTHCOMP) component and compared those fits with a slim disk model. Results. The light curves of the source do not show significant variability. From the hardness ratios (3–10 keV/0.3–3 keV flux), we infer that the source is not spectrally variable. We found that the photon index is tightly, positively correlated with the unabsorbed 0.3–10 keV flux and the hydrogen column density. Furthermore, the temperature emissivity profile indicates a deviation from the standard sub-Eddington thin disk model. The source shows an inverse correlation between luminosity and inner disk temperature in all fitted models. Conclusions. Our analysis favours the source to be in an ultraluminous soft state. The positive correlations between the photon index and the flux as well as between the photon index and the hydrogen column density may suggest the source is accreting at high Eddington ratios and might indicate the presence of a wind. The inverse luminosity relation with the inner disk temperature for all spectral models may indicate that the emission is geometrically beamed by an optically thick outflow.

Swift unveils the orbital period of IGR J18214-1318

ABSTRACT We analysed 13 yr of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory survey data collected on the high-mass X-ray binary IGR J18214-1318. Performing the timing analysis, we detected a periodic signal of 5.42 d. From the companion star characteristics, we derived an average orbital separation of $\sim 41 \rm R_{\odot }\simeq 2 R_{\star }$. The spectral type of the companion star (O9) and the tight orbital separation suggest that IGR J18214-1318 is a wind-accreting source with eccentricity lower than 0.17. The intensity profile folded at the orbital period shows a deep minimum compatible with an eclipse of the source by the companion star. In addition, we report on the broad-band 0.6–100 keV spectrum using data from XMM–Newton, NuSTAR, and Swift, applying self-consistent physical models. We find that the spectrum is well fitted either by a pure thermal Comptonization component, or, assuming that the source is a neutron star accreting above the critical regime, by a combined thermal and bulk motion Comptonization model. In both cases, the presence of a local neutral absorption (possibly related to the thick wind of the companion star) is required.

Testing Comptonization as the Origin of the Continuum in Nonmagnetic Cataclysmic Variables: The Photon Index of X-Ray Emission

Abstract The X-ray spectra of nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables (nmCVs) in the ∼0.3–15 keV energy band have been described by either one or several optically thin thermal plasma components or by cooling flow models. We tested whether the spectral continuum in nmCVs could be successfully described by Comptonization of soft photons off hot electrons presented in a cloud surrounding the source (the transition layer (TL)). We used public XMM-Newton EPIC-pn, Chandra HETG/ACIS and LETG/HRC, and RXTE PCA and HEXTE observations of four dwarf novae (U Gem, SS Cyg, VW Hyi, and SS Aur) observed in the quiescent and outburst states. In total, we analyzed 18 observations, including a simultaneous 0.4–150 keV Chandra/RXTE spectrum of SS Cyg in quiescence. We fitted the spectral continuum with up to two thermal Comptonization components (the compTT or compTB models in XSPEC) using only one thermal plasma temperature and one optical depth. In this framework, the two seed photon components are presumably coming from the innermost and outer parts of the TL (or innermost part of the disk). We obtained that the thermal Comptonization can successfully describe the spectral continuum of these nmCVs in the ∼0.4–150 keV energy band. Moreover, we present the first principal radiative transfer model that explains the quasi-constancy of the spectral photon index observed around 1.8, which strongly supports the Comptonization framework in nmCVs.

AstroSat/LAXPC view of GX 17+2: spectral evolution along the Z-track

In this paper, we present the first results obtained using $\sim 50$ ks observations of the bright low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX 17+2 with Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) onboard AstroSat. The source traced out a complete Z-track in the hardness intensity diagram (HID). The spectra at different sections of the Z-diagram are well described by either a combination of a thermal Comptonization component, a power-law and a relativistic iron line or a model consisting of a thermal disk component, a single temperature blackbody, a power-law and a relativistic iron line. Fitting the spectra with both phenomenological models suggests that the power-law component is strong in the horizontal branch (HB), becomes weaker as the source moves down the normal branch (NB) and then again becomes stronger as the sources moves up the flaring branch (FB). However, we find that the strength of the power-law component is model dependent, although the trend in the variation of the power-law strength along the Z-track is similar. A simple model composed by a Comptonized emission and power-law component, convolved with the ionized reflection, also describes the spectra very well. A normal branch oscillation (NBO) with a centroid frequency $7.42 \pm 0.23$ Hz, quality factor $\text{(Q)} \sim 4.88$, rms $1.41 \pm 0.29$% and significance 5.1$\sigma $ is detected at the middle of the NB. The parameters of the Comptonized emission show a systematic evolution along the Z-diagram. The optical depth of the corona increases as the source moves up along the FB, suggesting possible trigger of an outflow or dumping of the disc material in to the corona by radiation pressure.

AstroSat observation of GX 5–1: spectral and timing evolution

We report on the first analysis of an AstroSat observation of the Z-source GX 5–1 on 2017 February 26−27. The hardness-intensity plot reveals that the source traced out the horizontal and normal branches. The 0.8−20 keV spectra from simultaneous SXT and LAXPC data at different locations of the hardness-intensity plot can be described well by disk emission and a thermal Comptonized component. The ratio of the disk flux to the total flux, i.e., the disk flux ratio, increases monotonically along the horizontal branch to the normal one. Thus, the difference between the normal and horizontal branches is that in the normal branch, the disk dominates the flux while in the horizontal one it is the Comptonized component which dominates. The disk flux scales with the inner disk temperature as and not as , suggesting that either the inner radius changes dramatically or that the disk is irradiated by the thermal component changing its hardness factor. The power spectra reveal a quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) whose frequency changes from ∼30 Hz to 50 Hz. The frequency is found to correlate well with the disk flux ratio. In the 3−20 keV LAXPC band, the r.m.s. of the QPO increases with energy (r.m.s. ), while the harder X-rays seem to lag the soft ones with a time-delay of milliseconds. The results suggest that the spectral properties of the source are characterized by the disk flux ratio and that the QPO has its origin in the corona producing the thermal Comptonized component.

Exploring the Spectral Variability of the Ultraluminous X-Ray Source M81 X–6 with Suzaku and XMM-Newton

Abstract We present X-ray spectral variability studies of the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) M81 X–6 using Suzaku and XMM-Newton observations performed during 2001–2015. The spectra were first fitted by a standard multitemperature disk and a thermal Comptonization component that revealed spectral variability where the primary distinction is the change in the optical depth of the Comptonizing component, similar to what has been observed for other ULXs. We also fitted the spectra with a general relativistic accretion disk emission and a power-law component and found that it can reproduce a large part but not all of the spectral variability of the source. The parameters for the black hole mass and spin were found to be degenerate, but the high spin and larger mass (20–100 M ⊙) solutions provided near-Eddington accretion rates consistent with the assumptions of the model. The spectral variation is found to be driven by accretion rate changes leading to three different spectral classes. Thus, our results suggest the possibility of a dominant relativistic disk emission component for some of the spectral states of the source.

Spectral properties of MXB 1658–298 in the low/hard and high/soft state

We report results from a broadband spectral analysis of the low mass X-ray binary MXB 1658-298 with the Swift/XRT and NuSTAR observations made during its 2015-2017 outburst. The source showed different spectral states and accretion rates during this outburst. The source was in low/hard state during 2015; and it was in high/soft state during the 2016 NuSTAR observations. This is the first time that a comparison of the soft and hard spectral states during an outburst is being reported in MXB 1658-298. Compared with the observation of 2015, the X-ray luminosity was about four times higher during 2016. The hard state spectrum can be well described with models consisting of a single-temperature blackbody component along with Comptonized disc emission, or three component model comprising of multi-colour disc, single-temperature blackbody and thermal Comptonization components. The soft state spectrum can be described with blackbody or disc blackbody and Comptonization component, where the neutron star surface (or boundary layer) is the dominant source for the Comptonization seed photons. We have also found a link between the spectral state of the source and the Fe K absorber. The absorption features due to highly ionized Fe were observed only in the soft state. This suggests a probable connection between accretion disc wind (or atmosphere) and spectral state (or accretion state) of MXB 1658-298.

Spectral and timing properties of atoll source 4U 1705-44: LAXPC/AstroSat results

In this paper, we present the first results of spectral and timing properties of the atoll source 4U 1705-44 using $\sim$ 100 ks data obtained with Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) onboard {\it AstroSat}. The source was in the high-soft state during our observations and traced out a {\it banana track} in the Hardness Intensity Diagram (HID). We study {\bf the} evolution of the Power Density Spectra (PDS) and the energy spectra along the HID. PDS show presence of a broad Lorentzian feature (Peaked Noise or PN) centered at $1-13$ Hz and a very low frequency noise (VLFN). The energy spectra can be described by sum of a thermal Comptonized component, a power-law and a broad iron line. The hard tail seen in the energy spectra is variable and contribute $4-30$\% of the total flux. The iron line seen in this source is broad (FWHM $\sim$ 2 keV) and strong (EW $\sim$ $369-512$ eV). Only relativistic smearing in the accretion disc can not explain the origin of this feature and requires other mechanism such as broadening by Comptonization process in the external part of the `Comptonized Corona'. A subtle and systematic evolution of the spectral parameters (optical depth, electron temperature etc.) is seen as the source moves along the HID. We study the correlation between frequency of the PN and the spectral parameters. PN frequency seems to be correlated with the strength of the corona. We discuss the implication of the results in the paper.

Radio/X-ray monitoring of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 382. High-energy view with XMM–Newton and NuSTAR

We present the analysis of five joint XMM-Newton/NuSTAR observations, 20 ks each and separated by 12 days, of the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 382. The data were obtained as part of a campaign performed in September-October 2016 simultaneously with VLBA. The radio data and their relation with the X-ray ones will be discussed in a following paper. The source exhibits a moderate flux variability in the UV/X-ray bands, and a limited spectral variability especially in the soft X-ray band. In agreement with past observations, we find the presence of a warm absorber, an iron K$\alpha$ line with no associated Compton reflection hump, and a variable soft excess well described by a thermal Comptonization component. The data are consistent with a "two-corona" scenario, in which the UV emission and soft excess are produced by a warm ($kT \simeq 0.6$ keV), optically thick ($\tau \simeq 20$) corona consistent with being a slab fully covering a nearly passive accretion disc, while the hard X-ray emission is due to a hot corona intercepting roughly 10 per cent of the soft emission. These results are remarkably similar to those generally found in radio-quiet Seyferts, thus suggesting a common accretion mechanism.

Testing warm Comptonization models for the origin of the soft X-ray excess in AGNs

The X-ray spectra of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs) show a soft X-ray excess below 1–2 keV on top of the extrapolated high-energy power law. The origin of this component is uncertain. It could be a signature of relativistically blurred, ionized reflection or the high-energy tail of thermal Comptonization in a warm (kT ~ 1 keV), optically thick (τ ≃ 10–20) corona producing the optical/UV to soft X-ray emission. The purpose of the present paper is to test the warm corona model on a statistically significant sample of unabsorbed, radio-quiet AGNs with XMM-Newton archival data, providing simultaneous optical/UV and X-ray coverage. The sample has 22 objects and 100 observations. We use two thermal Comptonization components to fit the broadband spectra, one for the warm corona emission and one for the high-energy continuum. In the optical/UV, we also include the reddening, the small blue bump, and the Galactic extinction. In the X-rays, we include a warm absorber and a neutral reflection. The model gives a good fit (reduced χ2 < 1.5) to more than 90% of the sample. We find the temperature of the warm corona to be uniformly distributed in the 0.1–1 keV range, while the optical depth is in the range ~10–40. These values are consistent with a warm corona covering a large fraction of a quasi-passive accretion disk, i.e., that mostly reprocesses the warm corona emission. The disk intrinsic emission represents no more than 20% of the disk total emission. According to this interpretation, most of the accretion power would be released in the upper layers of the accretion flow.

NuSTAR and Swift Observations of Swift J1357.2–0933 During an Early Phase of Its 2017 Outburst

Abstract We present a detailed spectral analysis of Swift and NuSTAR observations of the very faint X-ray transient and black hole system, Swift J1357.2–0933, during an early, low-hard state of its 2017 outburst. Swift J1357.2–0933 was observed at ∼0.02% of the Eddington luminosity (for a distance of 2.3 kpc and a mass of ). Despite the low luminosity, the broadband X-ray spectrum between 0.3 and 78 keV requires the presence of a disk blackbody component with an inner disk temperature of in addition to a thermal Comptonization component with a photon index of . Using a more physical model, which takes strong relativistic effects into account, and assuming a high inclination of 70°, which is motivated by the presence of dips in optical light curves, we find that the accretion disk is truncated within a few from the black hole, independent of the spin.

Analysis of NuSTAR and Suzaku observations of Cyg X-1 in the hard state: evidence for a truncated disc geometry

The geometry of the accretion flow in black-hole X-ray binaries in the hard state, in particular the position of the disc inner edge, has been a subject of intense debate in recent years. We address this issue by performing a spectral study of simultaneous observations of Cyg X-1 in the hard state by NuSTAR and Suzaku. The same data were analysed before, and modelled by a lamppost containing hybrid electrons and located very close to the horizon, which emission was incident on a surrounding disc extending almost to the innermost stable circular orbit. We re-analyse the incident continuum model and show that it suffers from the lack of physical self-consistency. Still, the good fit to the data provided by this model indicates that the real continuum has a similar shape. We find it features a strong soft X-ray excess below a few keV, which we model as a soft thermal-Comptonization component, in addition to the main hard thermal-Compton component. This continuum model with reflection of both components yields the overall lowest $\chi^2$ and has a geometry with a hot inner accretion flow and a disc truncated at $\simeq$13--20 gravitational radii. On the other hand, we have also found spectral solution with a lamppost at a large height and a disc that can extend to the innnermost stable circular orbit, though somewhat statistically worse. Overall, we find the fitted truncation radius depends on the assumed continuum and geometry.
