Given the public health issue of growing cognitive Given the public health issue of growing cognitive impairment and mental health conditions in the United States, there is a need for scalable interventions to improve neurological functioning. Engagement in singing and music interventions has been shown to improve cognitive functioning and support neuroplasticity for those with cognitive impairment. Growing research shows singing is beneficial for many neurological rehabilitation outcomes—from improving cognition to elevating mood and reducing agitation in those with dementia. However, with fewer than 10,000 music therapists nationwide, accessibility to music-based interventions is limited. The SingFit digital platform was designed by music therapists to address this problem by providing a scalable digitized singing intervention for caregivers and therapists to use with those experiencing cognitive impairment. SingFit uses a multidimensional approach to create a therapeutic music session that includes singing, reminiscing, trivia, and guided exercise, which have been shown to improve cognitive function, mood, and social engagement. It is currently being used in 437 long term facilities with a 94.5% average retention rate speaking to its acceptability and feasibility by long term care staff. While empirical research is needed to assess its full clinical utility, SingFit is a promising solution to individuals being treated for cognitive and mood-related symptoms.
