A general asymptotic formula is developed for the normalized intensity of scattering by long, thin prisms of specified length and cross section. This is applied to the particular case of long, thin, parallel-sided strips, both monodisperse and polydisperse. The effect of interaction between strips in contact is also considered.

On the scattering of light by liquid surfaces

1. A very simple and effective method for cleaning a mercury surface is described which enables the molecular light-scattering by such surfaces to be observed and studied with great ease. This consists in a mechanical scraping of the surface by a clean steel edge. 2. The Mandelstamm-Gans theory of light-scattering by liquid surfaces is criticised. As surface waves of short wave-length are very highly damped, the assumption that the thermal agitation can be analysed into progressive wave-trains capable of acting as diffraction gratings for light does not appear to be justified. Certain discrepancies between theory and observation are, it is suggested, to be explained in this way.

Light-scattering at Critical Opalescence

MESSRS. Ornstein and Zernike have published in a series of articles, notably one in Phys. Zeits. (27, 76; 1926), a theory of light-scattering, correcting that of Einstein, with the idea of accounting for the experimental fact that the scattered intensity at the critical opalescence of a pure substance or a binary mixture is not infinitely great. Their formula refers to the scattering at 90° of the incident beam. One can easily generalise it, for a direction of which the angle with the incident beam is θ. One therefore finds for Lord Rayleigh's ratio, and in their notations:
