Nucleus–electron correlation revising molecular bonding fingerprints from the exact wavefunction factorization

We present a novel theory and implementation for computing coupled electronic and quantal nuclear subsystems on a single potential energy surface, moving beyond the standard Born-Oppenheimer (BO) separation of nuclei and electrons. We formulate an exact self-consistent nucleus-electron embedding potential from the single product molecular wavefunction and demonstrate that the fundamental behavior of the correlated nucleus-electron can be computed for mean-field electrons that are responsive to a quantal anharmonic vibration of selected nuclei in a discrete variable representation. Geometric gauge choices are discussed and necessary for formulating energy invariant biorthogonal electronic equations. Our method is further applied to characterize vibrationally averaged molecular bonding properties of molecular energetics, bond lengths, and protonic and electron densities. Moreover, post-Hartree-Fock electron correlation can be conveniently computed on the basis of nucleus-electron coupled molecular orbitals, as demonstrated for correlated models of second-order Møllet-Plesset perturbation and full configuration interaction theories. Our approach not only accurately quantifies non-classical nucleus-electron couplings for revising molecular bonding properties but also provides an alternative time-independent approach for deploying non-BO molecular quantum chemistry.

Fundamental vibrational frequencies of isolated 2-phosphaethynolate and 2-phosphaethynthiolate anions: OCP– and SCP–

Both second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) and vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) theory have been employed to compute the fundamental vibrational frequencies of the isolated 2-phosphaethynolate and 2-phosphaethynthiolate anions (OCP and SCP) near the CCSD(T) complete basis set (CBS) limit. Our best estimates of the fundamental frequency associated with the doubly degenerate bending mode of these linear triatomic ions () are 492 cm for OCP and 362 cm for SCP. Due to strong coupling, the stretching motions of SCP are best described as pseudo-symmetric () and pseudo-antisymmetric () stretches that we estimate to be 588 cm and 1367 cm, respectively. For OCP, our best predictions are 792 cm for and 1795 cm for , with the latter having predominantly CO stretching character. In the absence of experimental gas-phase vibrational spectra for these species, these computed anharmonic frequencies provide important reference values to help quantify spectroscopic perturbations induced by environmental effects such as those from solvents or counter ions.

Atomic Transition Probabilities of Neutral Calcium*

Abstract The goals of this study are (1) to test the best theoretical transition probabilities for Ca i (a relatively light alkaline earth spectrum) from a modern ab initio calculation using configuration interaction plus many-body perturbation theory against the best modern experimental transition probabilities and (2) to produce as accurate and comprehensive a line list of Ca i transition probabilities as is currently possible based on this comparison. We report new Ca i radiative lifetime measurements from a laser-induced fluorescence experiment and new emission branching fraction measurements from a 0.5 m focal length grating spectrometer with a detector array. We combine these data for upper levels that have both a new lifetime and new branching fractions to report log(gf) values for two multiplets consisting of nine transitions. Detailed comparisons are made between theory and experiment, including the measurements reported herein and a selected set of previously published experimental transition probabilities. We find that modern theory compares favorably to experimental measurements in most instances where such data exist. A final list of 202 recommended transition probabilities is presented, which covers lines of Ca i with wavelengths ranging from 2200 to 10000 Å. These are mostly selected from theory but are augmented with high-quality experimental measurements from this work and from the literature. The recommended transition probabilities are used in a redetermination of the Ca abundance in the Sun and in the metal-poor star HD 84937.

Restricted active space configuration interaction methods for strong correlation: Recent developments

AbstractIn this review we outline the theory and recent progress of the restricted active space configuration interaction (RASCI) methodology within the hole and particle approximation. The RASCI is a single reference approach based on the splitting of the orbital space in different subsets, in which the target CI space is expressed by the concomitant number of electrons and empty orbitals in each subspace. Initially, the method was born as a spin complete version of the spin‐flip ansatz able to deal with any number of unpaired electrons. Since then, the method has experienced several improvements related to its theoretical foundations, its efficient implementation, in the characterization of RASCI wave functions, and in the calculation of molecular properties. It has shown to be especially suitable for the characterization of medium to large molecular diradicals and polyradicals, and to the study of photophysical processes involving open‐shell species and/or multiexcitonic states, like in the singlet fission reaction. But, despite this success, several limitations emerge from the sever truncation of the excitation operator, which might translate into inaccurate relative energies between different regions of the potential energy surface, and overestimated (or underestimated) excitation energies. These errors are associated with the lack of dynamic correlation, which has motivated the development and implementation of various improvements based on multi‐reference perturbation theory and to blend the RASCI wave function with density functional theory through range separation of electron–electron interactions. Theoretical investigation of the vibrational structure of the Ar–CO2 complex

We develop a new flexible-monomer two-body ab initio potential energy surface (PES) for the Ar−CO2 complex. The accuracy of this new potential function is validated by its agreement in the vibrational spectrum of the complex. Vibrational self-consistent field theory (VSCF) and vibrational configuration interaction (VCI) theory were employed to solve the complete vibrational Hamiltonian, including both intermolecular and intramolecular degrees of freedom. We observe excellent agreement with theoretical and experimental results for the vibrational energy levels in the Terahertz region. In the intramolecular region, we confirm the slight splitting of the bending modes of the CO2 monomer, where the in-plane bend is 0.83 cm−1 less energetic than the out-of-plane mode. We also explore the combination bands in the asymmetric stretching region of the CO2 monomer that involve the intermolecular motions, and show that these results compare favorably to the fundamental intermolecular vibrational energy levels.

Orbital Optimization in Selected Configuration Interaction Methods.

We study several approaches to orbital optimization in selected configuration interaction (SCI) plus perturbation theory methods and test them on the ground and excited states of three molecules using the semistochastic heat-bath configuration interaction method. We discuss the ways in which the orbital optimization problem in SCI resembles and differs from that in complete active space self-consistent field. Starting from natural orbitals, these approaches divide into three classes of optimization methods according to how they treat coupling between configuration interaction coefficients and orbital parameters, namely uncoupled, fully coupled, and quasi-fully coupled methods. We demonstrate that taking the coupling into account is crucial for fast convergence and recommend two quasi-fully coupled methods for such applications: accelerated diagonal Newton and Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno.

Augmented Lagrangian method for spin‐coupled wave function

AbstractWe applied augmented Lagrangian method coupled with derivative‐free methods to optimize molecular wave function based on non‐orthogonal orbitals, that is called spin‐coupled generalized valence bond (SCGVB), for its ground‐state energy. In contrast to the orthogonal‐orbital‐based electronic structure theory, the SCGVB includes spin eigenfunctions to satisfy the eigenstates as the operator of the square of the spin. To obtain the ground‐state energy of SCGVB, therefore, it is necessary to optimize the orbital and the spin‐coupling coefficients simultaneously. In this study, we validated feasibility of the derivative‐free augmented Lagrangian method for optimizing the spin‐coupling and the orbital coefficients with the constraint of normality of the wave function. We employed this SCGVB method to compute dissociative potential energy curves (PECs) of H2, , , and LiH. The obtained PECs by the SCGVB method are close to these by full configuration interaction theory. These results indicate that the augmented Lagrangian method is effective to optimize the wave function of SCGVB.

Boosting oxygen reduction activity and enhancing stability through structural transformation of layered lithium manganese oxide

Structural degradation in manganese oxides leads to unstable electrocatalytic activity during long-term cycles. Herein, we overcome this obstacle by using proton exchange on well-defined layered Li2MnO3 with an O3-type structure to construct protonated Li2-xHxMnO3-n with a P3-type structure. The protonated catalyst exhibits high oxygen reduction reaction activity and excellent stability compared to previously reported cost-effective Mn-based oxides. Configuration interaction and density functional theory calculations indicate that Li2-xHxMnO3-n has fewer unstable O 2p holes with a Mn3.7+ valence state and a reduced interlayer distance, originating from the replacement of Li by H. The former is responsible for the structural stability, while the latter is responsible for the high transport property favorable for boosting activity. The optimization of both charge states to reduce unstable O 2p holes and crystalline structure to reduce the reaction pathway is an effective strategy for the rational design of electrocatalysts, with a likely extension to a broad variety of layered alkali-containing metal oxides.

Incremental vibrational configuration interaction theory, iVCI: Implementation and benchmark calculations.

The implementation of an algorithm for the determination of vibrational state energies based on a many-body expansion within the framework of configuration interaction theory is presented. An efficient evaluation of the increments within this approach is realized by an iterative configuration selection scheme. The new algorithm is characterized by low memory demands and an embarassingly parallel workload. The convergence of the expansion has been studied for a series of small molecules of increasing size, namely, formaldehyde, ketene, ethylene, and diborane. A threshold function has been employed to reduce the number of increments for high orders of the expansion. Benchmark calculations with respect to customary configuration-selective vibrational configuration interaction calculations are provided.

High-Level Rovibrational Calculations on Ketenimine.

From an astrochemical point of view ketenimine (CH2CNH) is a complex organic molecule (COM) and therefore likely to be a building block for biologically relevant molecules. Since it has been detected in the star-forming region Sagittarius B2(N), it is of high relevance in this field. Although experimental data are available for certain bands, for some energy ranges such as above 1200 cm−1 reliable data virtually do not exist. In addition, high-level ab initio calculations are neither reported for ketenimine nor for one of its deuterated isotopologues. In this paper, we provide for the first time data from accurate quantum chemical calculations and a thorough analysis of the full rovibrational spectrum. Based on high-level potential energy surfaces obtained from explicitly correlated coupled-cluster calculations including up to 4-mode coupling terms, the (ro)vibrational spectrum of ketenimine has been studied in detail by variational calculations relying on rovibrational configuration interaction (RVCI) theory. Strong Fermi resonances were found for all isotopologues. Rovibrational infrared intensities have been obtained from dipole moment surfaces determined from the distinguishable cluster approximation. A comparison of the spectra of the CH2CNH molecule with experimental data validates our results, but also reveals new insight about the system, which shows very strong Coriolis coupling effects.

Role of exchange and correlation in high-harmonic generation spectra of H2, N2, and CO2: Real-time time-dependent electronic-structure approaches.

This study arises from the attempt to answer the following question: how different descriptions of electronic exchange and correlation affect the high-harmonic generation (HHG) spectroscopy of H2, N2, and CO2 molecules? We compare HHG spectra for H2, N2, and CO2 with different ab initio electronic structure methods: real-time time-dependent configuration interaction and real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) using truncated basis sets composed of correlated wave functions expanded on Gaussian basis sets. In the framework of RT-TDDFT, we employ Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) and long-range corrected Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (LC-ωPBE) functionals. We study HHG spectroscopy by disentangling the effect of electronic exchange and correlation. We first analyze the electronic exchange alone, and in the case of RT-TDDFT with LC-ωPBE, we use ω = 0.3 and ω = 0.4 to tune the percentage of long-range Hartree-Fock exchange and short-range exchange PBE. Then, we added the correlation as described by the PBE functional. All the methods give very similar HHG spectra, and they seem not to be particularly sensitive to the different description of exchange and correlation or to the correct asymptotic behavior of the Coulomb potential. Despite this general trend, some differences are found in the region connecting the cutoff and the background. Here, the harmonics can be resolved with different accuracy depending on the theoretical schemes used. We believe that the investigation of the molecular continuum and its coupling with strong fields merits further theoretical investigations in the near future.

Many-electron dynamics in laser-driven molecules: wavefunction theory vs. density functional theory.

With recent experimental advances in laser-driven electron dynamics in polyatomic molecules, the need arises for their reliable theoretical modelling. Among efficient, yet fairly accurate methods for many-electron dynamics are Time-Dependent Configuration Interaction Singles (TD-CIS) (a Wave Function Theory (WFT) method), and Real-Time Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (RT-TD-DFT), respectively. Here we compare TD-CIS combined with extended Atomic Orbital (AO) bases, TD-CIS/AO, with RT-TD-DFT in a grid representation of the Kohn-Sham orbitals, RT-TD-DFT/Grid. Possible ionization losses are treated by complex absorbing potentials in energy space (for TD-CIS/AO) or real space (for RT-TD-DFT), respectively. The comparison is made for two test cases: (i) state-to-state transitions using resonant lasers (π-pulses), i.e., bound electron motion, and (ii) large-amplitude electron motion leading to High Harmonic Generation (HHG). Test systems are a H2 molecule and cis- and trans-1,2-dichlorethene, C2H2Cl2, (DCE). From time-dependent electronic energies, dipole moments and from HHG spectra, the following observations are made: first, for bound state-to-state transitions enforced by π-pulses, TD-CIS nicely accounts for the expected population inversion in contrast to RT-TD-DFT, in agreement with earlier findings. Secondly, when using laser pulses under non-resonant conditions, dipole moments and lower harmonics in HHG spectra are obtained by TD-CIS/AO which are in good agreement with those obtained with RT-TD-DFT/Grid. Deviations become larger for higher harmonics and at low laser intensities, i.e., for low-intensity HHG signals. We also carefully test effects of basis sets for TD-CIS/AO and grid size for RT-TD-DFT/Grid, different exchange-correlation functionals in RT-TD-DFT, and absorbing boundaries. Finally, for the present examples, TD-CIS/AO is observed to be at least an order of magnitude more computationally efficient than RT-TD-DFT/Grid.

The Shape of Full Configuration Interaction to Come.

We present a Perspective on what the future holds for full configuration interaction (FCI) theory, with an emphasis on conceptual rather than technical details. Upon revisiting the early history of FCI, a number of its key contemporary approximations are compared on as equal a footing as possible, using a recent blind challenge on the benzene molecule as a testbed [Eriksen et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett., 2020 11, 8922]. In the process, we review the scope of applications for which FCI continues to prove indispensable, and the required traits in terms of robustness, efficacy, and reliability its modern approximations must satisfy are discussed. We close by conveying a number of general observations on the merits offered by the state-of-the-art alongside some of the challenges still faced to this day. While the field has altogether seen immense progress over the years-the past decade, in particular-it remains clear that our community as a whole has a substantial way to go in enhancing the overall applicability of near-exact electronic structure theory for systems of general composition and increasing size.

Interpretation of Coupled-Cluster Many-Electron Dynamics in Terms of Stationary States.

We demonstrate theoretically and numerically that laser-driven many-electron dynamics, as described by bivariational time-dependent coupled-cluster (CC) theory, may be analyzed in terms of stationary-state populations. Projectors heuristically defined from linear response theory and equation-of-motion CC theory are proposed for the calculation of stationary-state populations during interaction with laser pulses or other external forces, and conservation laws of the populations are discussed. Numerical tests of the proposed projectors, involving both linear and nonlinear optical processes for He and Be atoms and for LiH, CH+, and LiF molecules show that the laser-driven evolution of the stationary-state populations at the coupled-cluster singles-and-doubles (CCSD) level is very close to that obtained by full configuration interaction (FCI) theory, provided that all stationary states actively participating in the dynamics are sufficiently well approximated. When double-excited states are important for the dynamics, the quality of the CCSD results deteriorates. Observing that populations computed from the linear response projector may show spurious small-amplitude, high-frequency oscillations, the equation-of-motion projector emerges as the most promising approach to stationary-state populations.

Potential-energy curve for the a3Σu+ state of a lithium dimer with Slater-type orbitals

We report state-of-the-art ab initio calculations of the potential energy curve for the $a^3\Sigma_u^+$ state of the lithium dimer conducted to achieve spectroscopic accuracy ($<$1cm$^{-1}$) without any prior adjustment to fit the corresponding experimental data. The nonrelativistic clamped-nuclei component of the interaction energy is calculated with a composite method involving six-electron coupled cluster and full configuration interaction theories combined with basis sets of Slater-type orbitals ranging in quality from double- to sextuple-zeta. To go beyond the nonrelativistic Born-Oppenheimer picture we include both the leading-order relativistic and adiabatic corrections, and find both of these effects to be non-negligible within the present accuracy standards. The potential energy curve developed by us allowed to calculate molecular parameters ($D_e$, $D_0$, $\omega_e$ etc.) for this system, as well as the corresponding vibrational energy levels, with an error of only a few tenths of a wavenumber ($0.2-0.4\,$cm$^{-1}$). We also report an ab initio value for the scattering length of two $^2S$ lithium atoms which determines the stability of the related Bose-Einstein condensate.

Ground and excited state first-order properties in many-body expanded full configuration interaction theory.

The recently proposed many-body expanded full configuration interaction (MBE-FCI) method is extended to excited states and static first-order properties different from total, ground state correlation energies. Results are presented for excitation energies and (transition) dipole moments of two prototypical, heteronuclear diatomics-LiH and MgO-in augmented correlation consistent basis sets of up to quadruple-ζ quality. Given that MBE-FCI properties are evaluated without recourse to a sampled wave function and the storage of corresponding reduced density matrices, the memory overhead associated with the calculation of general first-order properties only scales with the dimension of the desired property. In combination with the demonstrated performance, the present developments are bound to admit a wide range of future applications by means of many-body expanded treatments of electron correlation.

Almost exact energies for the Gaussian-2 set with the semistochastic heat-bath configuration interaction method.

The recently developed semistochastic heat-bath configuration interaction (SHCI) method is a systematically improvable selected configuration interaction plus perturbation theory method capable of giving essentially exact energies for larger systems than is possible with other such methods. We compute SHCI atomization energies for 55 molecules that have been used as a test set in prior studies because their atomization energies are known from experiment. Basis sets from cc-pVDZ to cc-pV5Z are used, totaling up to 500 orbitals and a Hilbert space of 1032 Slater determinants for the largest molecules. For each basis, an extrapolated energy well within chemical accuracy (1 kcal/mol or 1.6 mHa/mol) of the exact energy for that basis is computed using only a tiny fraction of the entire Hilbert space. We also use our almost exact energies to benchmark energies from the coupled cluster method with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations. The energies are extrapolated to the complete basis set limit and compared to the experimental atomization energies. The extrapolations are done both without and with a basis-set correction based on density-functional theory. The mean absolute deviations from experiment for these extrapolations are 0.46 kcal/mol and 0.51 kcal/mol, respectively. Orbital optimization methods used to obtain improved convergence of the SHCI energies are also discussed.

Coherent many-body exciton in van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS3.

An exciton is the bosonic quasiparticle of electron-hole pairs bound by the Coulomb interaction1. Bose-Einstein condensation of this exciton state has long been the subject of speculation in various model systems2,3, and examples have been found more recently in optical lattices and two-dimensional materials4-9. Unlike these conventional excitons formed from extended Bloch states4-9, excitonic bound states from intrinsically many-body localized states are rare. Here we show that a spin-orbit-entangled exciton state appears below the Néel temperature of 150kelvin in NiPS3, an antiferromagnetic van der Waals material. It arises intrinsically from the archetypal many-body states of the Zhang-Rice singlet10,11, and reaches a coherent state assisted by the antiferromagnetic order. Using configuration-interaction theory, we determine the origin of the coherent excitonic excitation to be a transition from a Zhang-Rice triplet to a Zhang-Rice singlet. We combine three spectroscopic tools-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering, photoluminescence and optical absorption-to characterize the exciton and to demonstrate an extremely narrow excitonic linewidth below 50kelvin. The discovery of the spin-orbit-entangled exciton in antiferromagnetic NiPS3 introduces van der Waals magnets as a platform to study coherent many-body excitons.

Toward a fully automated calculation of rovibrational infrared intensities for semi-rigid polyatomic molecules.

The implementation of a new program for the variational calculation of rovibrational state energies and infrared intensities is presented. The program relies on vibrational self-consistent field and vibrational configuration interaction theory and is based on the Watson Hamiltonian. All needed prerequisites, i.e., multidimensional potential energy and dipole moment surfaces, comprehensive symmetry information, the determination of vibrational wave functions, and an efficient calculation of partition functions, are computed in a fully automated manner, which allows us to calculate rovibrational spectra in a black-box type fashion. Moreover, the use of a molecule specific rotational basis leads to reliable rovibrational line lists. Benchmark calculations are provided for thioformaldehyde (H2CS), which shows strong Coriolis coupling effects and a complex rovibrational spectrum. The underlying multidimensional potential energy surface has been calculated at the level of explicitly correlated coupled-cluster theory.
