Preaching and Worship

It is not with the details of homiletics that this paper will occupy itself—how to write a sermon or how to behave in church. These profitable lessons it will dismiss to the class-room or the Sunday School, and will then hold itself free to expand in joyous exaltation of the magnitude and dignity of the training requisite for the fit discharge of the highest duties of the ministry. Every ability which one brings to it may help—those of the carpenter and the goldsmith, of him that smootheth with the hammer and him that smiteth the anvil. But all powers and all training will adjust themselves to its main purpose, the curve of which is determined by its two foci—for every great process is not circular but elliptical—the foci of preaching and worship. Around these the details of a theological curriculum will revolve. The Pentateuch and the Synoptic Problem, the Nicene Council and the Social Settlement House, the Anselmic theory of the Atonement and the Malthusian theory of population, all will have in view their ultimate end of preaching and worship, and all will come bringing their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

It is the purpose of the present paper to ask certain questions as to the relationship which should prevail between the department of New Testament interpretation and the department of systematic theology in the light of the present methods of scholarship in these two departments. As the theological curriculum used to be defined, both departments were apparently working with the same material. Systematic theology was supposed to set forth scriptural doctrines. and better by making the Christian religion a more effective and helpful force in the lives of men. One need not deny the unity of human life, or question that religion touches every aspect of it, in order to find for the Christian minister a clearly defined place and function in human society. Religion touches life at every point, but is not the whole of life; men must eat and drink, wear clothes, and dwell in houses as well as pray and worship. The farmer and the architect and the tailor need religion for themselves, because they are men, and as religious men they ought to be promoters of religion in others also. But the minister's function is nevertheless distinguishable from that of the farmer as a farmer, because his concern as a minister is with a different phase of human life from that with which the farmer deals as a farmer.
