Modelling the impacts of climate change on agrochemical fate and transport by water on a catchment scale

The export of agrochemicals and their transformation products (TPs) following their application in the agricultural fields poses a threat to water quality. Future changes in climatic conditions (e.g. extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall or extended dry periods) could alter the degradation and mobility of agrochemicals. In this research, we use an integrated modelling framework to understand the impact of extreme climate events on the fate and transport of the agrochemical S-Metolachlor and two of its TPs (M-OXA, Metolachlor Oxanilic Acid and M-ESA, Metolachlor Ethyl Sulfonic Acid). This is done by coupling climate model outputs to the Zin-AgriTra agrochemical reactive transport model in four simulation scenarios. 1) Reference (2015–2018), 2) Very dry (2038–2041), 3) Very wet (2054–2057) and 4) High temperature (2096–2099) conditions of a selected RCP8.5 based regional climate scenario. The modelling framework is tested on an agricultural catchment, Wulka, in Burgenland, Austria. The model results indicate that 13–14 % of applied S-Metolachlor is retained in the soil, and around 85 % is degraded into TPs in the different scenarios. In very dry and high-temperature scenarios, degradation is higher, and hence, there is less S-Metolachlor in the soil. However, a large share of formed M-OXA and M-ESA are retained in the soil, which is transported via overland and groundwater flow, leading to a build-up effect in M-OXA and M-ESA river concentrations over the years. Though a small share of S-Metolachlor and TPs are transported to rivers, their river export is affected by the intensity and amount of rainfall. The very wet and high-temperature scenarios show higher S-Metolachlor and TP concentrations at the catchment outlet due to higher river discharge. The reference scenario shows higher river peak concentrations associated with higher overland flow caused by measured hourly rainfall compared to disaggregated daily precipitation data in the other scenarios.

Discovering transformation products of pharmaceuticals in domestic wastewaters and receiving rivers by using non-target screening and machine learning approaches

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are an important source of pharmaceuticals in surface water, but information about their transformation products (TPs) is very limited. Here, we investigated occurrence and transformation of pharmaceuticals and TPs in WWTPs and receiving rivers by using suspect and non-target analysis as well as target analysis. Results showed identification of 113 pharmaceuticals and 399 TPs, including mammalian metabolites (n = 100), environmental microbial degradation products (n = 250), photodegradation products (n = 44) and hydrolysis products (n = 5). The predominant parent pharmaceuticals (n = 37) and transformation products (n = 68) were mainly derived from antimicrobials, accounting for 32.7 % and 17.0 %, respectively. The identified compounds were found in the influent (387–428) and effluent (227–400) of WWTPs, as well as upstream (290–451) and downstream (322–416) of receiving rivers, most predominantly from antimicrobials, followed by analgesic and antipyretic drugs. A total of 399 identified TPs were transformed by 110 pathways, of which the oxidation reaction was predominant (27.0 %), followed by photodegradation reaction (10.7 %). Of the 399 TPs, 49 (with lower PNECs) were predicted to be more toxic than their parents. Compounds with potential high risks (hazard quotient >1 and risk index (RI) > 0.1) were found in the WWTP influent (126), effluent (53) and river (61), and the majority were from the antimicrobial and antihypertensive classes. In particular, the potential risks (RI) of TPs from roxithromycin and irbesartan were found higher than those for their corresponding parents. The findings from this study highlight the need to monitor TPs from pharmaceuticals in the environment.

Non-target discovery and risk prediction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and transformation products in wastewater treatment systems

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serve as the main destination of many wastes containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Here, we investigated the occurrence and transformation of PFAS and their transformation products (TPs) in wastewater treatment systems using high-resolution mass spectrometry-based target, suspect, and non-target screening approaches. The results revealed the presence of 896 PFAS and TPs in aqueous and sludge phases, of which 687 were assigned confidence levels 1–3 (46 PFAS and 641 TPs). Cyp450 metabolism and environmental microbial degradation were found to be the primary metabolic transformation pathways for PFAS within WWTPs. An estimated 52.3 %, 89.5 %, and 13.6 % of TPs were believed to exhibit persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity effects, respectively, with a substantial number of TPs posing potential health risks. Notably, the length of the fluorinated carbon chain in PFAS and TPs was likely associated with increased hazard, primarily due to the influence of biodegradability. Ultimately, two high riskcompounds were identified in the effluent, including one PFAS (Perfluorobutane sulfonic acid) and one enzymatically metabolized TP (23-(Perfluorobutyl)tricosanoic acid@BTM0024_cyp450). It is noteworthy that the toxicity of some TPs exceeded that of their parent compounds. The results from this study underscores the importance of PFAS TPs and associated environmental risks.

Identification of ∼200 transformation products of polyhalogenated compounds to characterize their transformation pathways in sludges

Sewage sludge adsorbs a large amount of harmful organic pollutants, particularly the persistent and hydrophobic polyhalogenated compounds (PHCs). PHCs have been subjected to biological and chemical oxidation treatments during wastewater treatment processes; however, the species and concentrations of their transformation products (TPs) in sludge remain unknown, and the transformation pathways are unclear. In this study, 234 TPs of PHCs, including 77 TPs of chlorinated paraffins (CPs-TPs), 102 TPs of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs-TPs), 45 TPs of dechlorane plus (DPs-TPs), and 10 TPs of brominated flame retardants (BFRs-TPs), were identified in sludge through Ph4PCl-enhanced ionization coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography–Orbitrap–mass spectrometry. Based on the chemical structures of the identified TPs, we identified three major transformation pathways: dehalogenation-hydroxylation, carbon chain decomposition, and desulfurization. Approximately 97 TPs were newly discovered through the pathways. Carbon chain decomposition products of OCPs and DPs were detected for the first time at relatively high abundances. More hydroxylation products of DPs and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and multi-dehalogenation products of heptachlor, toxaphene, DPs and HBCDs were detected at relative intensities higher than those of the known TPs. The oxidation treatment of sludge achieved up to 13 %–94 % of PHCs to be removed, with dehalogenation-hydroxylation as the main transformation pathway. Advanced treatment technologies are needed for degradation of both PHCs and their TPs.

A spatio-temporal analysis of environmental fate and transport processes of pesticides and their transformation products in agricultural landscapes dominated by subsurface drainage with SWAT+

Pesticides are detected in surface water and groundwater, endangering the environment. In lowland regions with subsurface drainage systems, drained depressions become hotspots for transport of pesticides and their transformation products (TPs). This study focuses on detailed modelling of the degradation and transport of pesticides with different physico-chemical properties. The objective is to analyse complex hydrological transport processes, to understand the temporal and spatial dynamics of the degradation and transport of pesticides. The ecohydrological model SWAT+ simulates hydrological processes as well as agricultural management and pesticide degradation, and can therefore be used to develop pesticide loss reduction strategies. This study focuses on modelling of three pesticides (pendimethalin, diflufenican, and flufenacet), and two TPs, flufenacet-oxalic acid (FOA) and flufenacet sulfonic acid (FESA). The study area is a 100-hectare farmland in the northern German lowlands of Schleswig-Holstein that is characterized by an spacious drainage network of 6.3 km and managed according to common conventional agricultural practice.SWAT+ modelled streamflow with very good agreement between observed and simulated data during calibration and validation. Regarding pesticides, the model performance for highly mobile substances is better than for non-mobile pesticides. While the transport of the moderately to very mobile substances via tile drains played an important role in both wet and dry conditions, no transport via tile drains was modelled for the highly sorptive and non-mobile pendimethalin.In conclusion, the model can reliably represent the degradation of moderately to very mobile pesticides in small-scale tile drainage-dominated catchments, as well as surface runoff-induced peak loads. However, it has weaknesses in accounting for the subsurface transport of non-mobile substances, which can lead to an underestimation of the subsequent delivery after precipitation events and thus underestimates the total load.

Photodecomposition of antibiotics and their transformation products in wastewaters using ZnO and TiO2 with LED lamps

This work presents a study of the behavior of three antibiotics (erythromycin (ERY), clarithromycin (CLR) and sulfadiazine (SFZ)) and their transformation products (TPs), generated after photolytic and photocatalytic (TiO2 and ZnO) treatments, in wastewater irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diode (LED) lamps as light source. For this, an analytical methodology for the antibiotics and their TPs was developed. Thus, samples were treated by salting-out assisted liquid–liquid extraction (SALLE) and identification and quantification was carried out by liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) using quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF) and triple quadrupole (QqQ) analyzers, respectively. The results revealed the presence of 14, 13 and 5 TPs of ERY, CLR and SFZ, respectively, being found in wastewaters spiked with the antibiotics during photo-oxidation treatment. Subsequently, the established analytical method was also applied, in a real case, to study of behavior of these pharmaceuticals (0.2 mg L-1) and their TPs generated in wastewater during a photocatalytic treatment. In this case, 13, 11 and 2 TPs were tentatively identified ERY, CLR and SFZ, respectively. In addition, the photocatalytic treatment using TiO2 exhibited higher degradation rate than photocatalytic treatment using ZnO. The ECOSAR programme was used to estimate the potential ecotoxicity of the identified TPs. The results showed a potential hazard of SFZ, CLR, ERY and some of their TPs to aquatic organisms. Furthermore, some of the identified TPs were found to be more toxic than their parent compounds.

Occurrence and risk assessment of pesticides and their transformation products related to olive groves in surface waters of the Guadalquivir river basin

Pesticides are considered one of the main sources of contamination of surface waters, especially in rural areas highly influenced by traditional agricultural practices. The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact caused by pesticides and their transformation products (TPs) related to olive groves in surface waters with strong agricultural pressure. 11 streams were monitored during four sampling campaigns over 2 years. A solid-phase extraction, followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) analysis was used in the quantitative target approach, with more than 70 validated compounds. Target method was combined with a suspect screening strategy involving more than 500 pesticides and TPs, using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) to identify additional pesticides and TPs out of the scope of analysis. A total of 43 different compounds were detected with the target method. The herbicide MCPA was present in all samples and at the highest concentration (1260 ng L−1), followed by the fungicide carbendazim (1110 ng L−1), and the herbicide chlorotoluron (706 ng L−1). The suspect screening strategy revealed the presence of 7 compounds out of the target analysis (1 pesticide and 6 TPs). 6 analytes were confirmed with the analytical standards. Semi-quantification results revealed that TPs exhibited higher concentrations than their corresponding parent compounds, indicating higher persistency. Some small streams showed a comparable number of pesticides and concentrations to the most polluted large river. The determined pesticide and TPs concentrations represented an estimated environmental hazard in almost all sampling sites under study. This work underscores the importance of including pesticide TPs and small streams impacted by extensive agricultural activities in water quality monitoring programs.

First Evidence of the Bioaccumulation and Trophic Transfer of Tire Additives and Their Transformation Products in an Estuarine Food Web.

The discovery of the significant lethal impacts of the tire additive transformation product N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) on coho salmon has garnered global attention. However, the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of tire additives and their transformation products (TATPs) within food webs remain obscure. This study first characterized the levels and compositions of 15 TATPs in the Pearl River Estuary, estimated their bioaccumulation and trophic transfer potential in 21 estuarine species, and identified priority contaminants. Our observations indicated that TATPs were prevalent in the estuarine environment. Eight, six, seven, and 10 TATPs were first quantified in the shrimp, sea cucumber, snail, and fish samples, with total mean levels of 45, 56, 64, and 67 ng/g (wet weight), respectively. N,N'-Diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPPD) and N,N'-bis(2-methylphenyl)-1,4-benzenediamine (DTPD) exhibited high bioaccumulation. Significant biodilution was only identified for benzothiazole, while DPPD and DTPD displayed biomagnification trends based on Monte Carlo simulations. The mechanisms of bioaccumulation and trophodynamics of TATPs could be explained by their chemical hydrophobicity, molecular mass, and metabolic rates. Based on a multicriteria scoring technique, DPPD, DTPD, and 6PPD-Q were characterized as priority contaminants. This work emphasizes the importance of biomonitoring, particularly for specific hydrophobic tire additives.

Estrogenic disruption effects and formation mechanisms of transformation products during photolysis of preservative parabens

The ubiquitous presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in the environment and their associated adverse effects has raised concerns about their potential risks. The increased toxicity observed during the environmental transformation of ECs is often linked to the formation of their transformation products (TPs). However, comprehension of their formation mechanisms and contribution to the increased toxicity remains an unresolved challenge. To address this gap, by combining quantum chemical and molecular simulations with photochemical experiments in water, this study investigated the formation of TPs and their molecular interactions related to estrogenic effect using the photochemical degradation of benzylparaben (BZP) preservative as a representative example. A non-targeted analysis was carried out and three previously unknown TPs were identified during the transformation of BZP. Noteworthy, two of these novel TPs, namely oligomers BZP-o-phenol and BZP-m-phenol, exhibited higher estrogenic activities compared to the parent BZP. Their IC50 values of 0.26 and 0.50 μM, respectively, were found to be lower than that of the parent BZP (6.42 μM). The binding free energies (ΔGbind) of BZP-o-phenol and BZP-m-phenol (−29.71 to −23.28 kcal·mol−1) were lower than that of the parent BZP (−20.86 kcal·mol−1), confirming their stronger binding affinities toward the estrogen receptor (ER) α-ligand binding domain. Subsequent analysis unveiled that these hydrophobic residues contributed most favorably to ER binding, with van der Waals interactions playing a significant role. In-depth examination of the formation mechanisms indicated that these toxic TPs primarily originated from the successive cleavage of ester bonds (OCH2C6H5 and COO group), followed by their combination with BZP*. This study provides valuable insight into the mechanisms underlying the formation of toxic TPs and their binding interactions causing the endocrine-disrupting effects. It offers a crucial framework for elucidating the toxicological patterns of ECs with similar structures.

Occurrence, source apportionment and risk assessment of selected pharmaceuticals and their transformation products in the effluent-impacted rivers

The presence and risk of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the aquatic environment have received global attentions recently, while the information about their transformation products (TPs) is limited. In this study, the occurrence and behavior of 40 common PhACs and TPs belong to 10 categories were investigated in the surface water of Ningbo city in China for two consecutive years. A total of 23 PhACs and TPs were detected among 20 sampling sites with the overall concentrations in the range of 77.7–742.8 ng/L. Source apportionment found that about 70% of the PhACs originated from the discharge of WWTP effluent. Caffeine and TPs 10,11-dihydroxycarbamazepine were typical indicators to differentiate unbiotreated and biotreated wastewater. CFI and fluoxetine were the pollutants with the highest risk value. The results indicated that the hydrodynamic conditions of rivers should also be considered to promote the biotic and abiotic transformation of PhACs besides pollution source control.

Methylation and Demethylation of Emerging Contaminants in Plants.

Many contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have reactive functional groups and may readily undergo biotransformations, such as methylation and demethylation. These transformations have been reported to occur during human metabolism and wastewater treatment, leading to the propagation of CECs. When treated wastewater and biosolids are used in agriculture, CECs and their transformation products (TPs) are introduced into soil-plant systems. However, little is known about whether transformation cycles, such as methylation and demethylation, take place in higher plants and hence affect the fate of CECs in terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, we explored the interconversion between four common CECs (acetaminophen, diazepam, methylparaben, and naproxen) and their methylated or demethylated TPs in Arabidopsis thaliana cells and whole wheat seedlings. The methylation-demethylation cycle occurred in both plant models with demethylation generally taking place at a greater degree than methylation. The transformation rate of demethylation or methylation was dependent on the bond strength of R-CH3, with demethylation of methylparaben or methylation of acetaminophen being more pronounced. Although not explored in this study, these interconversions may exert influences on the behavior and biological activity of CECs, particularly in terrestrial ecosystems. The study findings demonstrated the prevalence of transformation cycles between CECs and their methylated or demethylated TPs in higher plants, contributing to a more complete understanding of risks of CECs in the human-wastewater-soil-plant continuum.

Efficiency of phytoremediation and identification of biotransformation pathways of fluoroquinolones in the aquatic environment

Phytoremediation is a low-cost and sustainable green technology that uses plants to remove organic and inorganic pollutants from aquatic environments. The aim of this study was to investigate the phytoextraction, phytoaccumulation, and phytotransformation of three fluoroquinolones (FQs) (ciprofloxacin [CIP], enrofloxacin [ENF], and levofloxacin [LVF]) by Japanese radish (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus) and duckweed (Lemma minor). Determination of FQs and identification of their transformation products (TPs) were performed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS). Inter-tissue translocation of FQs in Japanese radish tissues depended on their initial concentration in the medium. CIP (IT = 14.4) and ENF (IT = 17.0) accumulated mainly in radish roots, while LVF in leaves (IT = 230.8) at an initial concentration of 10 µg g−1. CIP (2,104 ng g−1) was detected in the highest concentration, followed by ENF (426.3 ng g−1) and LVF (273.3 ng g−1) in the tissues of both plants. FQs’ bioaccumulation factors were significantly higher for duckweed (1.490–18.240) than Japanese radish (0.027–0.103). The removal of FQs from water using duckweed was mainly due to their photolysis and hydrolysis than plant sorption. In the screening, analysis detected 29 FQ TPs. The biotransformation pathways of FQs are described in detail, and the factors that influence their formation are indicated.

PFΔScreen - an open-source tool for automated PFAS feature prioritization in non-target HRMS data.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a huge group of anthropogenic chemicals with unique properties that are used in countless products and applications. Due to the high stability of their C-F bonds, PFAS or their transformation products (TPs) are persistent in the environment, leading to ubiquitous detection in various samples worldwide. Since PFAS are industrial chemicals, the availability of authentic PFAS reference standards is limited, making non-target screening (NTS) approaches based on high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) necessary for a more comprehensive characterization. NTS usually is a time-consuming process, since only a small fraction of the detected chemicals can be identified. Therefore, efficient prioritization of relevant HRMS signals is one of the most crucial steps. We developed PFΔScreen, a Python-based open-source tool with a simple graphical user interface (GUI) to perform efficient feature prioritization using several PFAS-specific techniques such as the highly promising MD/C-m/C approach, Kendrick mass defect analysis, diagnostic fragments (MS2), fragment mass differences (MS2), and suspect screening. Feature detection from vendor-independent MS raw data (mzML, data-dependent acquisition) is performed via pyOpenMS (or custom feature lists) with subsequent calculations for prioritization and identification of PFAS in both HPLC- and GC-HRMS data. The PFΔScreen workflow is presented on four PFAS-contaminated agricultural soil samples from south-western Germany. Over 15 classes of PFAS (more than 80 single compounds with several isomers) could be identified, including four novel classes, potentially TPs of the precursors fluorotelomer mercapto alkyl phosphates (FTMAPs). PFΔScreen can be used within the Python environment and is easily automatically installable and executable on Windows. Persistence and potential risks of tetracyclines and their transformation products in two typical different animal manure composting treatments

Abundant residues of tetracyclines in animal manures and manure-derived organic fertilizers can pose a substantial risk to environments. However, our knowledge on the residual levels and potential risk of tetracyclines and their transformation products (TPs) in manure and manure-derived organic fertilizers produced by different composting treatments is still limited. Herein, the occurrence and distribution of four veterinary tetracyclines (tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, and doxycycline) and ten of their TPs were investigated in paired samples of fresh manure and manure-derived organic fertilizers. Tetracyclines and TPs were frequently detected in manure and manure-derived organic fertilizer samples in ranging from 130 to 118,137 μg·kg−1 and 54.6 to 104,891 μg·kg−1, respectively. Notably, the TPs concentrations of tetracycline and chlortetracycline were comparable to those of the parent compounds, with 4-epimers being always dominant and retained antibacterial potency. Based on paired-sampling strategy, the removal efficiency of tetracyclines and TPs in thermophilic composting was higher than that in manure storage. Toxicological data in the soil environment and the data derived from equilibrium partitioning method, indicated that tetracyclines and some TPs like 4-epitetracycline, 4-epichlortetracycline and isochlortetracycline could pose median to high ecological risk to terrestrial organisms. Total concentrations of TPs in manure-derived organic fertilizers were significantly correlated with the absolute abundance of tet(X) family genes, which provide evidence to evaluate the effects of TPs on the levels of antibiotic resistance in the environment. Among them, the 4-epitetracycline could pose ecological risk and retain antibacterial potency. Our findings emphasize the importance of monitoring and controlling the prevalence of tetracyclines and their TPs in livestock-related environments.

Comprehensive discovery and migration evaluation of antimicrobial drugs and their transformation products in a swine farm by target, suspect, and nontarget screening

Swine farms contaminated the surrounding environment through manure application and biogas slurry irrigation, hence causing the wide residual of multiple antimicrobial drugs (ADs) and their transformation products (TPs). This study performed target, suspect, and nontarget screening methods to comprehensively investigate the pollution profiles of ADs in a typical swine farm, and characterize the potential transformed pathway of TPs and distinguish specific reactions of different catalog of ADs. Samples of fresh feces, compost, biogas slurry, topsoil, column soil, groundwater and plants were analyzed using the database containing 98 target analytes, 679 suspected parent ADs, and ∼ 107 TPs. In total, 29 ADs were quantitively detected, and tetracyclines (TCs) were mostly frequently detected ADs with the concentrations up to 4251 ng/g in topsoil. Soil column investigation revealed that doxycycline (DOX) and tetracycline (TC) in soil could migrate to depths of approximately 1 m in soil. Suspect screening identified 75 parent ADs, with 10 being reported for the first time in environmental media. Semi-quantification of ADs revealed that one of the less-concerned ADs, clinafloxacin, was detected to exceed 5000 ng/L in biogas slurry, suggesting that significant attentions should be paid to these less-concerned ADs. Moreover, 314 TPs was identified, and most of them were found to undergo microbial/enzymatic metabolism pathways. Overall, our study displays a comprehensive overview of ADs and their TPs in swine farming environments, and provides an inventory of crucial list that worthy of concern. The results emphasize the need to quantify the levels and distribution of previously overlooked ADs and their TPs in livestock farms.

A comprehensive insight into the transformation pathways and products of fluoxetine and venlafaxine in wastewater based on molecular networking nontarget screening

Fluoxetine (FLX) and venlafaxine (VEN) are widely used antidepressant pharmaceuticals and were frequently detected in wastewater. Despite incomplete mineralization during biological wastewater treatment processes has been revealed, little is known about their transformation products (TPs) formed in the biological systems. To fill this gap, batch reactors and molecular networking nontarget screening were employed to identify the TPs and explore the transformation pathways of FLX and VEN in wastewater. On the basis, the concentrations of the TPs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were determined and their toxicity was predicted. The removal rate constants per unit of biomass of FLX and VEN were up to 0.3192 and 0.1644 L/(gMLSS*d) in batch experiments, respectively. Subsequently, 11 TPs of VEN and 11 TPs of FLX were tentatively identified, among which 9 TPs of FLX and 5 TPs of VEN were newly reported in this study. The proposed transformation pathways provided new insights into the transformation reactions including dehydrogenation, N-formylation and hydroxylation for FLX, and formylation, epoxidation and methylation for VEN. Particularly, N-succinylation and demethylation were the dominant transformation pathways for FLX and VEN during transformation processes. The results of sampling campaigns revealed that the accumulated concentration of TPs were higher than the concentrations of VEN in effluent of WWTPs. In silico prediction results suggested that certain TPs have higher toxicity, persistence and biodegradability than their corresponding parent compounds of FLX and VEN. In addition, VEN-TP264(a) showed higher ecological risks than VEN. This study revealed the transformation processes and fate of FLX and VEN in wastewater, indicating that greater concerns should be exerted on the toxicity detection and control of the TPs of FLX and VEN in the treated wastewater.

Identification of Transformation Products of Organic UV Filters by Photooxidation and Their Differential Estrogenicity Assessment.

Organic ultraviolet filters (OUVFs) are extensively released into aquatic environments, where they undergo complex phototransformation. However, there is little knowledge regarding their transformation products (TPs) and associated endocrine disruption potentials. In the present study, we characterized the chemical and toxicological profiles of TPs for two common OUVFs, oxybenzone (BP3) and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC), by photooxidation under environmentally relevant conditions. It is hypothesized that TPs of the tested OUVFs will show varied estrogenicity at different reaction times. High-resolution liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS) identified 17 TPs of 7 m/z for BP-3 and 13 TPs of 8 m/z for EHMC at confidence levels ≤2. Five novel TPs of 2 m/z were reported for the first time with structure-diagnostic MS/MS spectra. Estrogenicity assessment using the MCF-7-luc cell line showed discrepant estrogenic activities exhibited by OUVF-TPs over time. Specifically, BP3-TPs exhibited significantly greater estrogenicity than the parent at several reaction times, whereas EHMC-TPs displayed fluctuating estrogenicity with a declining trend. Correlation analysis coupled with molecular docking simulations further suggested several TPs of BP3 as potential endocrine disruptive compounds. These findings underscore the necessity of considering mixtures during chemical testing and risk assessment and highlight the potentially greater risks associated with post-transformation cocktails.

Assessing the transformation products and fate of Oxytetracycline by simulated aerobic degradation tests

Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a widely used broad-spectrum antibiotic, whose presence in water and sediments was reported in various regions of the world. The effects of OTC and other tetracyclines on the environment have been intensively studied although many of their transformation products (TPs) formed in the environment and their impact have not been yet fully characterized. Abiotic and biotic degradation tests under aerobic conditions at two pH values were carried out using OTC in artificial water/sediment systems to assess the effect of these variables on the environmental fate of the pollutant. HPLC-MSn was employed to detect and identify the main degradation products and pathways. Several transformations involved in the process were identified including alcohol oxidation, decarbonylation and hydroxylation. Differences in TPs and kinetics were found among degradation conditions, remarking a faster degradation of both OTC and TPs in the presence of microorganisms and at lower pH values. In summary, a total of 44 TPs were detected and structures were proposed for 20 of them, none of them having been previously reported. Furthermore, OTC degradation generated 24 TPs which remained in either solution or sediment, although none of them displayed higher algae toxicity than OTC. These results might be useful for planning future remediation and monitoring strategies.

Accelerated aging of tire and road wear particles by elevated temperature, artificial sunlight and mechanical stress — A laboratory study on particle properties, extractables and leachables

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) are generated in large quantity by automobile traffic on roads but their way of degradation in the environment is largely unclear. Laboratory experiments were performed on the effect of elevated temperature (simulating 2–3 years), sunlight exposure (simulating 0.5 years) and mechanical stress on the physical properties and chemical composition of TRWP and of cryo-milled tire tread (CMTT). No significant effects were observed of the applied mechanical stress on mean properties of pristine particles. After sunlight exposure up to 40 % in mass were lost from the TRWP, likely due to the loss of mineral incrustations from their surface. The chemical composition of TRWP and CMTT was characterized by determining 27 compounds, antioxidants (phenylene diamines), vulcanization agents (benzothiazoles and guanidines) and their transformation products (TPs). Extractables of TRWP (580–850 μg/g) were dominated by TPs, namely benzothiazolesulfonic acid (BTSA). CMTT showed much higher amounts of extractables (4600 μg/g) which were dominated by parent chemicals such as N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (6-PPD), diphenylguanidine (DPG) and mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). Sunlight exposure affected the amount of extractables more strongly than elevated temperature, for TRWP (−45 % vs −20 %) and CMTT (−80 % vs −25 %) and provoked a clear shift from parent compounds to their TPs. After sunlight exposure extractables of TRWP were dominated by BTSA and DPG. Sunlight exposure drastically reduced the 6-PPD amount extracted from both, TRWP and CMTT (−93 %, −98 %), while its quinone (6-PPDQ) increased by around 1 % of the 6-PPD decrease, only. For many TPs, concentration in leachates were higher than in extracts, indicating ongoing transformation of their parent compounds during leaching. These results highlight that abiotic aging of TRWP leads to strong changes in their chemical composition which affect their particle properties and are of relevance for the environmental exposure to tire-related chemicals.

Occurrence and distribution of emerging micropollutants in the central part of the German Bight

Micropollutants (MPs) are transported via rivers from industrial and urban areas to the German Bight (G.B.). In contrast to the mounting rivers less information is available on the occurrence of MPs and their transformation products (TPs) in the marine environment of the G.B. In this study 83 compounds, including 26 metabolites of pharmaceuticals and environmental TPs were measured in water at 46 sampling sites in estuaries of Ems, Weser, Elbe, and the G.B. 36 MPs were even detected in the open sea areas (salinity > 34 psu) at 0.07–5.1 ng/L and to the best of our knowledge 10 MPs were detected in the marine environment for the first time. Concentrations of 8 MPs exceeded PNEC values suggesting a potential risk for sea life. Spatial distribution and relation of MPs with salinity allowed identifying emission paths for certain compounds and revealed the emissions from the River Elbe and Rhine.
