Design and Development of Vehicle Theft Protection and Accident Information System

In the recent days most of the people possess their own vehicle globally. Protection of vehicle from theft, avoidaccidents, immediate message transfer and care if accidents takes place play an vital role in this era. Theft which is one of the undesirable practices happens everywhere. Theft happens mostly while parking and driving through insecure places. So protection of vehicle is a vital requirement of motorists from theft. In this project effort has been taken to develop automobile location based system using GSM. This system alerts by sending a short message (SMS) to the owner of the vehicle when the engine is turned on. Immediately, the owner sends the message to turn off the engine in order to prevent the vehicle from theft. The notification is done with the help of GSM MODEM. In addition to the theft control system, the system also sends an appropriate message if an accident occurs. Air Bag System integrated with automobile location based system is used to sense the release of air bags during accident. Immediately a message will be sent to the police/emergency ambulance service for speedy action. This system has been designed and developed in a simple cost effective for USD 80 in a reliable manner.

In this work we are presenting a new electronic design for an anti fuel theft protection system that is simple and inexpensive solution to protect vehicle fuel from being stolen and from unauthorized users by exploiting microcontroller based system. The two major parts of this circuit are transmitter and receiver section. Transmitter is fitted in the vehicles near the fuel tap and the receiver in room of your office/house. An audio indication will be received when someone goes near to fuel tap.

Nowadays evasion from due payment of automobile loan, vehicle insurance is an ordinary affair. This paper deals with the design & development of an advanced vehicle locking system in the real time environment based on the loan / Insurance details. The proposed system consists of an PIC16F877A and GSM module that is embedded in the vehicle with an interfacing to Engine Control Unit (ECU) through I2C Bus which is in turn, communicated to the ECU. The ECU will allow starting the vehicle only after receiving the fair signals from the PIC controller. If the user attempts to remove the PIC controller unit, the fair signal won’t get received by the ECU and thereby the engine will not ignite. In this proposed work, Real Time Clock (RTC) and EEPROM data will automatically lock the vehicle on the every 30th day of the month. The engine can be unlocked only by the banker / insurer by sending the due clearance confirmation message. It makes the way for the prompt payment of the dues by the customer. Inculcating hardware implementation, ensuring vehicle security, user friendliness are some of the valuable features enlisted in this project. PROTEUS software is used for simulation and MP LAB for compilation. Theft protection can also be added as future work.

Security Is Not Enough! On Privacy Challenges in Smart Grids

Smart Grid solutions are being rolled out at large scale these days. While security concerns are addressed on various levels and sophisticated technical measures applied, privacy issues are still not fully understood yet. The generation of high-frequency meter readings exposes customers to new threats. Various politic initiatives thus aim towards a strong regulatory framework to enable an appropriate protection of the customers' privacy. We argue that finally the only effective measure is to avoid the production of personalized fine-grained meter readings. However, it is important to study the impact of available technical privacy protection concepts on smart grid services, including demand management, load forecasting and energy theft protection, which typically rely on these data. Therefore, in this paper we outline the privacy challenge and the concept of privacy-by-design. In particular, we discuss privacy protection methods and compare them in terms of applicability and impact on smart grid services.

Doubly Illegal

This study investigated sources of alcohol for underage drinkers. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were individually conducted with 47 youths, ages 15-18, who reported drinking within the last 12 months, to explore alcohol access. Theft was one method that some youths reported using to obtain alcohol. In addition to 9% of respondents who reported stealing alcohol from commercial outlets themselves, a total of 26% respondents reported occasions when their close friends stole alcohol. Our findings unveiled that teens had a body of knowledge that some drew upon for stealing alcohol. Youths revealed detailed knowledge about store layout, theft protection devices and store policies. In particular, respondents disclosed knowledge about which aisles have blind spots, how to remove security tops on bottles, and no-chase policies. Theft of alcohol from commercial sources may be reduced by examining the weaknesses of existing theft prevention practices, and revising store policies.

How Much is the Public Willing to Pay to be Protected from Identity Theft?

Identity theft has become one of the most ubiquitous crimes in the USA with estimates of the number of households being victimized annually ranging between 5% and 25%, resulting in direct losses totaling hundreds of billions of dollars over the past few years. Government efforts to combat identity theft have included legislation criminalizing and increasing penalties as well as regulatory efforts designed to protect individual identifying information held by financial and other business organizations. At the same time, individuals are taking their own preventive actions and purchasing private protection such as credit monitoring and identity theft insurance services. We use data from a large sample of residents from four states (Illinois, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Washington) in order to assess the public's willingness to pay (WTP) for a government program designed to reduce identify theft under two separate conditions, one promising a 25% reduction in identity theft and the other promising a 75% reduction in identity theft. Results indicate that: (1) between 40% and 66% of the public is willing to pay an additional tax for identity theft prevention, more so when the promise of a reduction is highest (75% compared to 25%) with an average WTP of $87, and (2) WTP is highest among individuals who carry many credit cards, who subscribe to an identity theft protection service, and who take active steps in preventing fraud by shredding bills and paying with cash, but is lowest among individuals who believe that taxes are too high. Converted into a “per crime” cost and combined with the portion of identity theft costs that are borne directly by business, we estimate the average cost per identity theft to range from approximately $2,800 to $5,100.

The Securitization of Financial Identity and the Expansion of the Consumer Credit Industry

This article examines the efforts on the part of the retail banking and credit card industry to securitize identity during the period of economic activity that led to the financial crisis. The article examines how, during this period, these industries built an expansive network infrastructure and devoted considerable attention to developing ways of automatically identifying and tracking the individuals who accessed that network. Thanks significantly to this process, “identity” itself has come to be understood as a disembodied aggregate of transaction-generated data, a digital representation of the person constructed over time and space based on the perpetual collection of more data. It also has come tobe understood as something that needs to be secured, through both institutional and individual efforts, using techniques like fraud detection algorithms, vigilant self-monitoring of accounts, the adoption of identity theft protection services, and the integration of biometric technologies into documents and devices. The conceptualization of identity in these terms, with financial data (and the security of that data) at its core, is a fundamental aspect of the reorganization of the U.S. economy around the priorities of financialization. The institutional and individual measures undertaken for the securitization of identity serve the finance industry’s need to define, measure, and differentiate the population in terms of its financial capacities. However, these measures have proven to have limited utility in protecting individuals against the most significant threats to their financial security in a newly financialized, credit-oriented economy.

The Virtual Property Problem: What Property Rights in Virtual Resources Might Look Like, How They Might Work, and Why They are a Bad Idea

“Virtual property” is a solution looking for a problem. Arguments justifying “virtual property” lie among three common themes—Lockean labor theory, theft protection and deterrence, and market efficiency. This Article goes beyond those who advocate for or against the creation of “virtual property” by first dismissing Locke’s labor theory as a justification. Then, this Article explores two models of what property rights may look like when applied to virtual resources. These models are then applied to six different virtual world scenarios in order to see the effects of “virtual property.” Finally, this Article explains the failure of property rights to benefit the users, developers, and virtual resources of virtual worlds.

Interdependent Security: The Case of Identical Agents

Do firms have adequate incentives to invest in anti-terrorism mechanisms? This paper develops a framework for addressing this issue when the security choices by one agent affect the risks faced by others. We utilize the airline security problem to illustrate how the incentive by one airline to invest in baggage checking is affected by the decisions made by others. Specifically if an airline believes that others will not invest in security systems it has much less economic incentive to do so on its own. Private sector mechanisms such as insurance and liability will not necessarily lead to an efficient outcome. To induce adoption of security measures one must turn to regulation, taxation or institutional coordinating mechanisms such as industry associations. We compare the airline security example with problems having a similar structure (i.e., computer security and fire protection) as well as those with different structures (i.e., theft protection and vaccinations). The paper concludes with suggestions for future research.
