Effectiveness of Using Personal Photograph as Media in Teaching Writing of Descriptive Text at SMK Sore Tulungagung

This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of students' writing descriptive text taught using Personal Photograph at tenth-grade students of SMK “Sore”. In this research, the researcher used pre-experimental with a one- group pretest-posttest design. The instrument of this research was a test. The researcher gave a pre-test to the student, and then treatment about writing using Personal Photograph. After that, the researcher gives the student post-test. The population was all students of grade tenth SMK “Sore” Tulungagung with 800 students. The researcher used purposive sampling was taken X TITL 1 as the sample with total was 27 students. After getting enough data, the researcher calculated the data using the t-test. Based on the computation, the mean score of the pre-test is 5.70 and the mean of the post- test 8.41. The t-value is -9.782 consulted to the t-table at the -2.056 significance level to see whether the hypothesis is accepted or rejected. It means that t-value is lower than t-table. So, it can be stated that the hypothesis is accepted. Based on the result analysis, the researcher then concludes that using Personal Photograph effectively improved the students’ writing descriptive text at the tenth-grade students of SMK “Sore” Tulungagung.

Swedish (L1) and English (L2) Argumentative Writing of Upper Secondary Students with Reading Difficulties

Writing has been identified as a challenge for students with reading difficulties. This study contributes to previous research by exploring argumentative writing in L1 (Swedish) and L2 (English) in a group of students with reading difficulties in upper secondary school. Participants were 19 students with typical reading, 19 students with poor decoding, and 9 students with poor comprehension. A majority of students attended vocational programmes. Written text quality was assessed by using an adapted version of Jacobs et al.’s (1981) analytic scoring scheme including content, organisation, cohesion, vocabulary, language use, spelling, and punctuation. Students with reading difficulties (regardless of reader subgroup) were found to perform poorly in all categories in both L1 and L2, with spelling being particularly challenging in L1, and cohesion, language use, spelling, and punctuation in L2. Significant differences were found between students with poor comprehension and students with typical reading in cohesion, language use and spelling in L2. Few other significant differences were identified possibly due to an overall poor writing outcome also for students with typical reading. This general poor outcome in writing is discussed in relation to previous studies on writing among students with reading difficulties and writing in vocational programmes.

REINFORCING STUDENTS’ SHORT FUNCTIONAL TEXT WRITING SKILL THROUGH MIND MAPPING TECHNIQUE

This research is generally aimed at problem-solving and improvement attempts for students’ writing skill, especially in short functional text writing. In particular, it is also expected to contribute to the betterment of the teaching and learning processes of the Short Functional Text Writing subject in the Department of English Education (DEE) in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta and as an alternative technique in teaching the subject for the lecturers. Class Action Research (CAR) is applied to identify whether using mind mapping can help reinforce students’ skill in writing short functional texts. The subject of this research is the first semester students who are being taught Short Functional Text Writing subject. The researchers gathered the data from two cycles in a qualitative manner. The data were obtained from the observation, the results of the tests and the questionnaire. The results of this research are that the students’ motivation increased since they could harness their creativity in making a variety of mind maps from different media and the students’ comprehension about short functional texts improved since mind mapping could help them understand the materials

Emotion Analysis of Cross-Media Writing Text in the Context of Big Data.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, sentiment analysis has been one of the most active research fields in natural language processing. Now sentiment analysis technology has not only achieved significant results in academia, but also has been widely used in practice. From business services to political campaigns, sentiment analysis is used in more and more fields. Sentiment analysis is essentially to dig out the user’s emotional attitude from the massive emotional natural language text data, and analyze the emotional dynamics of the text author through certain technical means. At present, there is almost no sentiment analysis in cross-media writing content, and it can rarely help cross-media writing vision to advance with the times and comprehensive improvement of writing ability to adapt to the current rapidly developing information society; the commonly used text media in the digital age are not. Then there is the only composition tool. Various new media appearing with the development of the ages continue to intervene in writing, and it is the general trend to cultivate media literacy in writing. The main content of this paper is the research on the emotional intensity of students’ Internet public Aiming at the shortcomings of the topic feature word selection in the sentiment tendency analysis of the students’ Internet public opinion, improvements have been made to facilitate the research on the sentiment intensity of the sentiment analysis of the students’ Internet public opinion. Sentiment analysis of students’ cross-media written text through an improved MapReduce combinator model.

The Effectiveness of Using Questions Technique to Improve Students’ Writing of Recount Text

Writing as a productive skill is considered a difficult skill to be mastered because not every student has better English proficiency which somehow has become an obstacle for them to construct better grammatical text. This research aims to improve the writing skills of recount text of students of Class CA of STMIK STIKOM Indonesia. The approach of this research is Class Action Research (CAR). The data collected are observation, interviews literary research, and tests. The results of this research showed that the implementation of Questions Guiding Techniques (QFT) was conducted successfully which can be seen through the results of cycle I and the progress made by students in cycle II. The results of cycle I (pre-test) and cycle II (post-test) were examined using an assessment rubric of writing text skills of recount text which consists of 5 aspects those are content, organization, structure, vocabulary, and mechanics with the score 4-3-2-1 (best-better-poor-poorer). The results of the cycle I (4-1) are 17-19-32-52. The result of cycle II shows that there is improvement in students understanding of grammar and writing skill on the recount text because score 4-3 is increased (36 – 95) and 2-1 is decreased (86 – 25) which shows better writing skills of the students.

An Error Analysis on the Use of Simple Past Tense in Students’ Recount Text Writing

This research was conducted based on the phenomenon happened in the school. The students had low ability in grammar. They got difficulty in constructing sentences by using some tenses. Therefore, this thesis discussed the error analysis on using simple past tense in writing recount text. The purpose of this research was to classify the types of errors made by the students and find out the sources of errors which students made on using past tense in writing recount text. This research was conducted based on descriptive qualitative analysis. The subjects of the research were the students at the first semester of SMA Mardi Yuana Depok Class X Social III which consisted of 20 students, it was considered by using purposive sampling technique. In collecting the data, this research used writing task to identify the students‟ errors on using action verb in writing recount text based on linguistic category taxonomy and sources of errors according to Brown’s theory. The result of the research showed that there were 4 types of errors made by the students. The highest two common errors were Misinformation errors 30 or 37,5% and Omission errors 24 or 30 %. The lowest two errors were Addition errors that were 14 items or 17,5% and Mis-ordering with 12 items or 15%. Based on the total result types of errors, this research found that Interlingual Transfer was the major source of errors made by the students.

Error analysis of Students’ Recount Writing Text

In this research, the researcher intended to find the significant error that occur in class X MIPA 1 SMAN 11 Kendari. By this research, the aim was to describe the main problem, the most common error which students made in their recount text writing at X MIPA 1 SMA Negeri 11 Kendari. Data is collected using Students writing draft. Students were asked to write a recount text at least 100 words in 45 minutes. The results of data analysis revealed that omission of auxiliary was the common error done by students X MIPA 1 SMA Negeri 11 Kendari. In students’ writing there are several errors that researcher have found that namely; omission of articles, omission of preposition, omission of apostrophe, omission of auxiliary, omission of countable and uncountable nouns. Based on the results, analysis students’ error is giving many the descriptions of students’ writing ability.

CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS WRITING ABILITY AND LEARNING MOTIVATION IN GOOGLE TRANSLATE WRITING CLASS

This study was from the real phenomenon which showed that students were using google translate as media to improve their writing ability and learning motivation. The main problem was students’ lack of vocabulary and they wanted fast and instant translation. As a result, they preferred using google translate than doing their writing ability. The purpose of this research is to measure the correlation between students’ writing ability and learning motivation in google translate writing class of 2nd semester English education study program at IAIN Palangka Raya. This research was a correlational study using quantitative research method. Learning Motivation Questionnaire and Descriptive Text Writing Test were distributed to take the data from 58 student from 2nd semester in academic year 2020/2021 who took paragraph writing class. The sample was obtained through the use of the cluster random sampling technique. The result finding showed the calculation students’ writing ability and learning motivation was rvalue = 0.617 ≥ rtable = 0.258 and tvalue = 5.867118 ≥ ttable = 1.67252), it meant that Ha accepted and Ho rejected. In this case students’ writing ability had high relationship or gave influence to learning motivation in google translate class. An Analysis of Texts Written by Third Semester of Undergraduate Students of English Education Study Program

This writing aims at finding out the kinds of texts written by the students, analyzing students’ texts’ constructions, and finding out their problems in writing English texts. This study employs descriptive qualitative method. It describes deeply the finding that related to aims of study above. The data of this result is taken from the written forms of English texts by the third semester of the undergraduate students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University. The research shows that there are six kinds of texts written by the third semester of the undergraduate students of English Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University. Those kinds of texts are narrative text, descriptive text, recount text, comparison/contrast text, cause-effect text, and expository text. Some of Students’ text writings are cohesively, coherently and grammatically correct. However, some other students present incohesive, incoherent, and grammatically incorrect in writing English texts. Furthermore, there are several problems faced by the students in writing English texts, namely: transferring ideas in writing, lack of vocabulary, problem in using grammar, difficult to start writing, lack of reading sources, problem in organization of writing, and inconsistent in developing idea.

The Use of Poster Media to Enhance Student Learning Outcomes in Descriptive Text Writing

This research reported observations regarding students' learning activities. The results of the study revealed that most students did not enjoy the learning process and yet become passive learners. This can be driven by several aspects, particularly the employment of conventional methods by teachers during the class, and the media exploited was not engaging. Thus, this study proposed a resolution to construct learning activities more engaged. This study suggested that the application of poster media can be an alternative to enhance students' learning outcomes in Writing Descriptive Text topic, particularly at the junior high school (SMPN 1). The data sources in this study were seventh-grade students of SMPN 1 Darul Aman (The academic year 2021/2022). Data compiled from students comprise data on the results of written tests carried out at the end of each cycle, non-tests, including observation sheets, and interviews. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis.

A Comparison of Texts for Writing and Original Speaking Texts by Correspondence Analysis

This paper explores the differences of the four texts used in speaking and writing classes. Specifically, the texts were analyzed using a readability tool and Correspondence Analysis (hereafter, CA). An analysis of the data suggests that, in terms of readability and content, there were both similarities and differences among the four texts. More precisely, regarding readability, the two texts for the speaking class are closer to the level of English textbooks which junior high school students (seniors) use, compared to the other two texts. In addition, concerning the content including vocabulary, CA shows that the two texts, Writing 1 and Writing 2, are similar to each other, but those texts are different from the other two texts, Speaking 1 and Speaking 2.

&nbsp;Bu çalışmada, Irak’ta ortaöğretim birinci kademede okutulmak üzere hazırlanan Türkçe 1., 2. ve 3.&nbsp; sınıflarda okutulan Türkçe ders kitaplarındaki on adet metin ve bu metinlerin görselleriyle uyumu incelenmiştir. İncelenen kitaplarda Türkçe Ders Kitabı 1’in 2019 yılında yayımlanmış 5. baskısı, Türkçe Ders Kitabı 2’nin 2019’da çıkan 2’nci baskısı ve 2019’da yayımlanan Türkçe Ders Kitabı 3’ün yine ikinci baskısı incelenmiştir. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmış olup veriler ise dokuman analiz yöntemiyle toplanmıştır. Ayrıca veriler nitel içerik analizine tâbi tutularak inceleme yöntemi ile çözümlenmiştir.

INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN WRITING SENSITIVITY AND WRITING ACHIEVEMENT

This study aimed to reveal the relationship between primary school teacher candidates’ writing sensitivity and writing achievement. This quantitative study conducted with the relational survey model consisted of 575 teacher candidates of two public universities. The data about primary school teacher candidates’ writing achievement were collected via Rubric for Written Texts (RWT) with the help of written texts produced by them and the Writing Sensitivity Scale (WSS). According to the findings obtained, primary school teacher candidates had moderate writing sensitivity and writing achievement and there was a statistically significant relationship between writing sensitivity and writing achievement. It can be argued that writing sensitivity and writing achievement significantly differ according to gender, while writing sensitivity does not significantly differ based on year, writing achievement does.

Hari Widi Utomo Teaching Writing of Recount Text Using “Freeze! Freeze!” Game in Junior High School Level

One of the most difficult skills in English lesson is teaching writing. Therefore, this study aims to find out the effectiveness of “Freeze! Freeze!” game for teaching writing on grade eight students of SMP N 1 Rakit, Banjarnegara. This study is an experimental research at SMP N 1 Rakit. This study consisted of two groups which are experimental and control groups. In collecting the data, the writer used a test and the result was analyzed by using a t-test to find out the effect of the treatment. After analyzing the data, the writer found that there was a positive effect of the use of “Freeze! Freeze!” game in teaching writing of recount text. It could be seen from the result of hypothesis testing that the t-test was higher than the t-table (3.792&gt;1.997). Thus, it can be concluded that the use of “Freeze! Freeze!” game in teaching writing of recount text was effective.

Modified Digital Comics: An Alternative Way for Enhancing Students Narrative Text Writing Ability

One of the countries in the world with the most comic readers is Indonesia. Based on Detik.com, Indonesia as the biggest southeast comic market has more than 6 million active users. This phenomenon becomes an opportunity for applying this media in the classroom. The purposes of this study are to find out the effect of modified digital comic as an alternative way in improving the students’ ability in writing narrative text and what aspect of writing which is influenced by this media. This research used quantitative approach and was conducted to 29 students. For collecting the data, the researcher administered the writing test. This study showed that there was a significant improvement of students who have low proficiency in the English language in writing narrative text after using modified digital comics as a language-learning media. However, the teacher perceived the use of modified digital comics in the classroom as time consuming and impractical. Keywords: modified digital comic, narrative text, writing ability.

Error Analysis in the Written Texts of Pre-Service Teachers

The errors in the written texts of eleven (11) BSED English Pre-Service Teachers from a private university in Iloilo City, Philippines, are investigated in this study. The Error Analysis framework of Stephen Pit Corder was chosen to analyze errors of omissions, additions, selections, and misordering, as well as the sources of these errors, both interlingually and intralinguistically. The omission of past tense markers, auxiliary words, plural noun markers, and conjunctions revealed that the sentences were incorrectly structured. Written texts were complex and grammatically inappropriate due to the addition of verbs, plural noun markers, and articles. The inclusion of the present tense, the plural noun marker, articles, and other wordy expressions resulted in the expression's contradictory meaning. Furthermore, the presence of run-on or fused sentences, comma splices, and dangling modifiers resulted in sentence disorder and ambiguous meaning. There are a variety of reasons why English language learners make mistakes when learning a foreign language, one of which is Interlingual source, which occurs when they utilize their first language as a framework and then transform their ideas into English word for word. Intralingual, on the other hand, developed as a result of overgeneralization and the inability to apply rules in specific contexts, preferring simple grammatical combinations to intricate rules. In students' written texts, errors are widespread, indicating issues with writing processes. Pre-service teachers must be proficient in writing; thus, their English teachers must regularly review errors and conduct an intensive intervention session using appropriate instructional techniques to address their writing issues and needs.

An Errors Analysis in Using Diathesis (態) in Written Text of Japanese Language Department Senior Students at Universities in Medan

The grammatical category that shows the relationship between the subject is diathesis. From the researcher’s observations, it was found that Japanese students used diathesis errors in the city of Medan. Therefore, this study discusses what forms of errors are and how Japanese universities students in Medan make the error in using diathesis forms. The specific purpose of this study is to analyze and determine the forms and patterns of errors in using the diathesis (態/tai) that it becomes a consideration for Japanese language lecturers to provide more effective teaching for Japanese learners, especially universities students in Medan. The types of diathesis sentences analyzed are judoutai (passive diathesis), Shieki (causative), kiboubun (wish form), and jujubun (expression of give-take). This research is descriptive qualitative research with error analysis. The data were sentences using diathesis (tai), sourced from written text made by 30 senior students of the Japanese department at the Universitas Sumatera Utara and the Universitas Harapan Medan. In conclusion, the form of error has been found in passive (受 身), a causative (使役), and the expression of the give-take action (授受表現) diathesis, which is realized grammatically and lexically. Errors include changing verbs, using particles (joshi), and assigning word unit functions to sentences. This study concludes that understanding and practice on the ukemi, shieki, and jujubun diathesis is needed in Japanese language learning among university students in Medan to improve student skills

Analisis Sistem Pembelajaran Daring (SPADA) dalam Mata Kuliah Menulis Teks Berbahasa Jawa

This study aims to analyze the Online Learning System (SPADA) in the Javanese Text Writing course. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study using interpretive methods presented in the form of a description. The research subjects were students of the Java Language Education Study Program (PBJ) FKIP UNS semester II or the 2020 batch of 74 people. The sample was taken using a purposive sampling technique which only focused on students who were taking the MTBJ course in the even semester of 2021. The data collection technique used a questionnaire or questionnaire technique. The analysis technique used is data collection, data processing and giving conclusions. Data processing is presented in the form of a brief description or detailed narrative text. The data that has been obtained are categorized and then conclusions are drawn. The results showed that students got various conveniences and benefits, such as ease of remembering lecture history, improvement of IT skills, ease of sending assignments, ease of understanding theory and improving skills as well as increasing the effectiveness of the lecture process. The SPADA features or menus that are much favored by students while attending MTBJ lectures, which can increase the effectiveness of lectures are discussion forums, assignments, course materials, and my dashboard. Some improvements that must be made by SPADA are related to upgrading the system, added features, and lecturer skills improvement.
