The Effect of English Admission Test and Various Variables on Foreign Language Skills of Students

This study compares students' foreign language proficiency according to several criteria and the role of the English Admission Test (EAT). The predictive correlational research design, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in this study. The study group consisted of 81 undergraduate students studying in the English Language Teaching Department of a state university in southern Turkey. The English Proficiency Test (TELP) developed by the researchers and the EAT scores were used as data collection tools. The validity and reliability analyses of the test were conducted using jMetrik, a data analysis software for classical test theory and item response theory, and the item difficulty and discrimination values, as well as the KR-21 reliability coefficients, were calculated. In line with the findings, it was concluded that the relevant test is a reliable and valid measurement tool. According to the findings, the English Admission Test scores predicted students' total TELP and reading test scores but not their listening, writing, or speaking scores. Besides, the students who received the English preparatory training performed better on the speaking and listening tests than those who did not. Finally, male students outperformed female students on both the total of English Proficiency Test and the reading test but not on other tests. In parallel with the results of the research, some suggestions were put forth. Accordingly, a test that successfully measures four basic language skills is needed in order to fully measure the target language skills of the students who will study in the field of language education. For this purpose, the content of the Foreign Language Test (YDT), which is currently in use, can be expanded to make multidimensional measurement and questions measuring different language skills can be added to the test. In order to facilitate the transition process and prepare the infrastructure, language skills can be added to the test gradually or multidimensional question types that measure more than one skill can be used.

A preliminary study of the probitive value of personality assessment in medical school admissions within the United States

BackgroundAllopathic medicine faces a daunting challenge of selecting the best applicants because of the very high applicant / matriculant ratio. The quality of graduates ultimately reflects the quality of medical practice. Alarming recent trends in physician burnout, misconduct and suicide raise questions of whether we are selecting the right candidates. The United States (US) lags far behind the United Kingdom (UK) and Europe in the study of non-cognitive tests in medical school admissions. Although more recently, medical schools in both the UK, Europe and the US have begun to use situational judgement tests such as the Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASPer) and the situational judgement test (SJT), recently developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and that these tests are, in a sense non-cognitive in nature, direct personality tests per se have not been utilized. We have historically used, in the admissions process within the US, knowledge, reasoning and exam performance, all of which are largely influenced by intelligence and also improved with practice. Personality, though also undoubtedly influenced by intelligence, is fundamentally different and subject to different kinds of measurements.MethodsA popular personality measurement used over the past two decades within the US in business and industry, but not medical school has been the Neo Personality Inventory – Revised (NEO-PI-R) Test. This test has not been utilized regularly in allopathic medicine probably because of the paucity of exploratory retrospective and validating prospective studies. The hypothesis which we tested was whether NEO-PI-R traits exhibited consistency between two institutions and whether their measurements showed probative value in predicting academic performance.ResultsOur retrospective findings indicated both interinstitutional consistencies and both positive and negative predictive values for certain traits whose correlative strengths exceeded traditional premed metrics: medical college admission test (MCAT) scores, grade point average (GPA), etc. for early academic performance.ConclusionsOur exploratory studies should catalyze larger and more detailed confirmatory studies designed to validate the importance of personality traits not only in predicting early medical school performance but also later performance in one’s overall medical career.

Universal admission laboratory screening for severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) asymptomatic infection across a large health system

Admission laboratory screening for asymptomatic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been utilized to mitigate healthcare-associated severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission. An understanding of the impact of such testing across a variety of patient populations is needed. SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid amplification admission testing results for all asymptomatic patients across 4 distinct inpatient facilities between April 20, 2020, and June 14, 2021, were analyzed. Positivity rates and the number needed to test (NNT) to identify 1 asymptomatic infected patient were calculated. Admission results were compared to COVID-19 community incidence rates for the system's surrounding metropolitan service area. Using a national survey of hospital epidemiologists, a clinically meaningful NNT of 1:100 was identified. In total, 51,187 tests were collected (positivity rate, 1.8%). During periods of high transmission, the NNT met the clinically relevant threshold in all populations. The NNT approached or met the threshold for most locations during periods of lower transmission. For all transmission levels, the NNT for fully vaccinated patients did not meet the threshold. Implementing an asymptomatic patient admission testing program can provide clinically relevant data based on the NNT, even during periods of lower transmission and among different patient populations. Limiting admission testing to non-fully vaccinated patients during periods of lower transmission may be a strategy to address resource concerns around this practice. Although the impact of such testing on healthcare-associated COVID-19 among patients and healthcare workers could not be clearly determined, these data provide important information as facilities weigh the costs and benefits of such testing.

Open Admission’s Grade-Entry Requirements and Academic Performance in Junior High School: An Analysis

Private high-school admission procedures frequently involve testing prospective students to determine their eligibility for enrollment, but this changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Numerous schools were adversely affected by the situation. To survive the economic crisis and declining enrollment among schools, many private schools altered their admissions policies. Even admission test providers have switched to online testing with increased prices of two to three times. The introduction of open admission did away with the requirement for an entrance exam but required applicants to submit their grades from the previous two academic years, which served as a benchmark for their potential academic performance in the school. The researcher used this chance to conduct a descriptive-correlational study to determine whether the grade-entry requirements can accurately predict the learners' academic performance. The general averages of the respondents for the previous two academic years were correlated with their general averages for the current academic year, which served as a quantitative representation of their academic performance at the school where they were admitted. The learners' grade-entry requirements revealed a statistically significant relationship between those averages and their academic performance in the school. Furthermore, the school of origin and initial admission status, whether qualified or waitlisted, were also correlated with their general averages, and it was found that only the latter has a statistically significant relationship with academic performance. The researcher suggested that grade-entry requirements could already be used as a reliable indicator of the prospective academic performance of admission applicants, even without an admission test.

1527. Use of a SARS-CoV-2 Strand-specific Assay to detect Relapse or Ongoing Infection at a Tertiary Care Center, California 2020–2022

Abstract Background Determining if a patient with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remains infectious can be challenging in patients with severe disease or those profoundly immunosuppressed. We use an assay that detects minus-strand RNA as a surrogate for actively replicating SARS-CoV-2. Here, we describe a cohort of patients who had strand-assay reversion: a detectable minus strand-specific assay after having had an undetectable value which may signify relapse of infection or reinfection. Methods We used a 2-step rRT-PCR specific to the minus strand of the SARS-CoV-2 envelope gene. The strand-specific assay is used to evaluate for infectivity in asymptomatic patients with a positive screening admission or pre-procedural test or in cases when ongoing infection was suspected (critical illness or profound immunosuppression). We collected minus strand-specific assays performed at Stanford Healthcare during August 2020–April 2022. We describe basic demographics and clinical characteristics for patients who reverted from undetectable to detectable using the minus strand-specific assay. Results A total of 2,505 strand-specific tests were collected from August 2020–April 2022 from 2,064 patients. A total of 292 (14%) had two or more strand-specific tests. Of them, 19 (7%) had an undetected minus strand-specific assay followed by a subsequent detectable value. Of them, seven (37%) had a minus strand-specific CT value of < 33. Most were male (n=4), median age was 54 (range: 8–62). All were profoundly immunosuppressed: Four had hematologic malignancies and three were post transplantation (kidney, lung, bone marrow). Median time from onset of symptoms or first positive test to reversion was 41 days (range:27–159). Median time from undetectable to detectable minus strand specific test was 26 days (range:4–34). All cases were considered relapses or ongoing infection rather than a new infection. Conclusion Among patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and consecutive strand-specific testing, a small proportion reverted from negative to positive. Most were profoundly immunosuppressed. The strand-specific assay can be an important tool in the evaluation of suspected cases of relapse or reinfection. 432. Ward-level Variation in Transmission of MRSA in Veterans Affairs Hospitals

Abstract Background In 2007, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) implemented the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Prevention Initiative nationally in acute care facilities (ACFs). Since that time, numerous publications have reported declining transmission rates and infection rates due to MRSA across the VA. Recent estimates of the impact of contact precautions (CP) on transmission suggest that the infectiousness of patients while on CP was 50% lower than patients not on CP. We extend that work by estimating the variation and trend in transmission while accounting for the estimated impact of CP on transmission. Methods We analyzed ten years of data from 108 VA ACFs from 1/1/2008 – 12/31/2017 using a Bayesian transmission model. The data included admission, discharge, and surveillance and clinical test results for MRSA. Data were partitioned into five 2-year analysis periods to allow for estimates of transmission to change over time, including all facilities with complete data spanning the 10-year study period. We estimated person-to-person transmission rates for each ward assuming the classic mass-action transmission framework, while accounting for the impact of CP on transmission, and used random effect models with inverse variance weights to derive pooled estimates of the transmission rates and trends across ward-types and over time. Results In this cohort study of 108 VA hospitals during the 10-year period, more than 2 million unique individuals had over 5.6 million admissions with more than 8.4 million MRSA surveillance tests (9.3% of which were positive). We observed a decline in the overall transmission rate over time, with the reduction driven by declining rates of transmission in the ICU setting (Figure 1). We observed that the transmission rate in medical/surgical wards remained constant during the 10-year period. Transmission trend by ward Conclusion We observed that in addition to the two-fold reduction in transmission of MRSA associated with CPs, that over the study period, the transmission rate declined in VA hospitals driven largely by reductions in the ICU setting. The secular trend downward in ICUs might reflect improved hand hygiene, changes in antibiotic use, or enhancements to other infection control practices. Admission Requirements and Academic Performance of Board vs Non-Board Course in Higher Education Institution

Higher Education Institutions require specific admission criteria to select the best candidates for a particular program. This study aims to assess the admission requirements and academic performance of the board and non-board course learners. Specifically, this quantitative study utilized a descriptive-correlational research design. The data came from randomly selected third-year college students in the different Board and Non-Board programs enrolled in the academic year 2020-2021. There were 286 respondents who took part in the study, 153 from the board course program, Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, and 133 from the non-board course program, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. The data revealed that the most number of enrollees in the non-board course, BSIT is from the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) Strand, while most learners from the Board course, BSEE belong to the General Academic Strand (GAS). Further, findings showed that the High-school Grade Point Average and the College Academic Performance of students from the non-board course, BSIT, were moderately correlated, and a similar relationship is observed for the variables College Admission Test and GPA. Meanwhile, for the Board Course, BSEE, admission tests, and high-school GPA are predictors of college academic performance. On the other hand, high-school strands are not predictors of the BSEE student's GPA. In conclusion, the College admission tests and high-school GPA are essential admission requirements for the board and non-board programs to predict academic performance. However, the high-school strand can be a determining factor for the academic performance for the non-board course, but not for the board course.

Using the LSAT as a labor market thermometer for lawyers

AbstractWe rely upon a 50‐state, 20‐year panel to find that the number of Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) takers is only loosely related to economic conditions—although slightly more for men than for women, who in 2020 accounted for 58% of all LSAT takers. The number of test takers rose more than 35% between 2014 and 2020. This wave accentuated an already existing downtrend in the median real income of lawyers, and thus provides support for the hypothesis that most states have more lawyers than they need.

Emergency Use of Tocilizumab in Moderate and Severe COVID-19 Patients over the Prevaccination Stage during the Pandemic in Mexico.

COVID-19 has been associated with the overactivation of the immune system; interleukin-6 (IL-6) seems to have a key role, which made its moderation to be proposed as a therapeutic blank. Tocilizumab has been used as part of treatments to modulate the immune response to infections caused by COVID-19. Material and Methods. An observational, descriptive, retrospective, and transversal study was carried out in patients diagnosed with moderate-severe COVID-19 who were hospitalized in the 251 General Regional Hospital from March to December 2020. A review of 700 files corresponding to hospitalized patients was carried out, and a sample of 70 patients who met the inclusion criteria proposed for this protocol was obtained. Among the comorbidities associated with the disease, it was found that hypertensive patients have a higher mortality rate: 62% died and so did 59% of those who needed invasive respiratory support. As regards admission tests, statistical significance was found for the figures of leukocytes, neutrophils, glomerular filtration rate, and PCR. The use of this drug benefits mainly young nonhypertensive patients with a moderate disease and preserved renal functions with no need for invasive respiratory support, regardless of other comorbidities.

A Machine Learning Approach to Identify the Feature Importance for Admission in the National Military High Schools

Abstract The article provides the impact of different averages (feature importance) within the admission exam for the national military high schools using and testing three supervised machine learning algorithms: logistic regression, K-Nearest Neighbors, and random forest. For this purpose, I have used the list with the results of candidates compounded by 430 rows, an unclassified document posted on the national military high school website, with details about: the final admission grade, the general grade for graduating of the secondary school, the general grade obtained at the national assessment, the mark obtained at admission test from Romanian language and mathematics items, etc. From the machine learning perspective, I have built a Jupyter notebook, a Python code using the specialized ML libraries (numpy, pandas, matplotlib, sklearn). In conclusion, the logistic regression algorithm identified the ‘feature importance’ (how each variable contributes to the predicted model) for admission in the national military high school: the mark obtained at admission test from Romanian language and Mathematics items - 4.821834, the general average obtained at the national assessment - 0.584434, the general average for graduating of the secondary school - 0.285446, etc. These are the expected results based on the admission methodology for the national military high schools.

Medical student selection process enhanced by improving selection algorithms and changing the focus of interviews in Australia: a descriptive study

The study investigates the efficacy of new features introduced to the selection process for medical school at the University of New South Wales, Australia: (1) considering the relative ranks rather than scores of the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test and Australian Tertiary Admission Rank; (2) structured interview focusing on interpersonal interaction and concerns should the applicants become students; and (3) embracing interviewers’ diverse perspectives. Data from 5 cohorts of students were analyzed, comparing outcomes of the second year in the medicine program of 4 cohorts of the old selection process and 1 of the new process. The main analysis comprised multiple linear regression models for predicting academic, clinical, and professional outcomes, by section tools and demographic variables. Selection interview marks from the new interview (512 applicants, 2 interviewers each) were analyzed for inter-rater reliability, which identified a high level of agreement (kappa=0.639). No such analysis was possible for the old interview since it required interviewers to reach a consensus. Multivariate linear regression models utilizing outcomes for 5 cohorts (N=905) revealed that the new selection process was much more effective in predicting academic and clinical achievement in the program (R2=9.4%–17.8% vs. R2=1.5%–8.4%). The results suggest that the medical student selection process can be significantly enhanced by employing a non-compensatory selection algorithm; and using a structured interview focusing on interpersonal interaction and concerns should the applicants become students; as well as embracing interviewers’ diverse perspectives.

PREDICTING GRADUATE ADMISSIONS USING MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES

Many students in today's educational environment seek to continue their education after completing an engineering or graduate degree programme. Some people are interested in higher education in the sense that they wish to complete their M. Tech through the GATE entrance exam or another admission exam for a school. Some students desire to pursue an MBA through the Common Admission Test (CAT) or through the entrance exam for their chosen educational institution, while others seek to pursue a master's degree at an international university. Higher education often implies we have numerous possibilities, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Australia, etc. Graduate Records Examination (GRE) and TOEFL/IELTS (Test of English as a Foreign Language/International English Language Testing System) scores are required of students who choose to pursue master's degrees overseas. One of the most important things students must think about is preparing their SOP (Statement of Purpose) and LOR (Letter of Recommendation) once they have taken the tests. If the student was applying for a scholarship, the LOR and SOP are crucial. The pupils must next decide which institutions they wish to attend or apply to; we cannot apply to all universities because doing so would incur significant application expenses. The student's lack of knowledge about the institution he could be admitted to is now a concern. There are certain internet blogs that may be helpful in these situations, but they are not always correct and don't take all the relevant elements into account. There are also some consulting firms that will demand a lot of our time and money and occasionally provide inaccurate information. Our objective is to create a machine learning model that will estimate a student's likelihood of admission to a certain university based on their test results and other relevant data.

How the Entry Profiles and Early Study Habits Are Related to First-Year Academic Performance in Engineering Programs

This paper explores how the entry profiles of engineering students are related to their academic performance during the first year of university in a sample of 255 first-year engineering students (77 females and 178 males) at a university in Northeast Mexico. The predictors used were the high school grade point average (HSGPA), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) results, the first admission test, and a Spanish adaptation of the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes Test (SSHA) from Brown and Holtzman. The SSHA adaptation was tested for internal consistency reliabilities via Cronbach’s alpha globally (0.92) and for the following categories: delay avoidance (DA: 0.79), work methods (WM: 0.81), teacher approval (TA: 0.89), and educational acceptance (EA: 0.74). The results were compared with those of other studies to validate their consistency. To assess the different entry profiles between high- and low-achieving students, we performed a Kruskal–Wallis test and found significant differences (p < 0.001) between both profiles for all variables. We then measured the relationships between the variables and academic success by constructing a correlation table, where HSGPA, SAT, and DA showed the highest correlations: 0.61, 0.40, and 0.36, respectively. With these outcomes, a predictive model via a logistic regression (R2=0.52) was built to forecast first year academic performance in the specific context.

Impact of High School Quality on Academic Performance Throughout Medical School.

Numerous studies currently evaluate medical school success and performance using college Grade Point Average (GPA) and Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) scores. These studies demonstrate that students who score low on the MCAT will continually perform worse than their peers on medical school exams and board exams. We investigated where a student attended high school and how that factor can affect medical school performance because most studies evaluated performance based on college attendance. Our retrospective study evaluated 184 students at Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine (KSOM) and showed higher-quality high schools, in comparison to lower-quality high schools, affected medical school performance. We categorized two groups for high school quality based on the U.S. News scorecard for programs within Nevada: those students with a high school reading proficiency (HSRP) >50% and those with an HSRP <50%. These two groups were then standardized based on percentile within the school and averaged using HSRP, MCAT, pre-clinical, step 1, clinical, and step 2 scores. A line chart was graphed to demonstrate the difference between the two groups. As might be expected, our results showed significantly higher MCAT scores from students who attended high-quality versus low-quality high schools. Our results also showed that although students from low-quality high schools performed worse for the first part of medical school, by step 2, students will score similarly in both groups. Students who performed poorly on the MCAT and attended lower-quality high schools will score as competitively as their peers by step 2.

Admission Criteria as Predictors of Licensure Performances among Graduates of a State University in the Philippine Cordillera Administrative Region

Proficiency in licensure examinations has emerged as a foundation of pride for graduates and an attraction for potential students to higher education institutions (HEIs). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to uncover the admission criteria that confidently predicted the licensure performance of graduates of a state institution in the Philippine Cordillera Administrative Region. This study used correlation research and 654 randomly selected graduates of Ifugao State University (IFSU) who took and eventually passed their licensure tests. The records of the university registrar and the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) were the primary sources of data. To comply with research ethics and standards, written permission from university officials was obtained. The mean, standard deviation, and frequency were used to describe the descriptive variables. Multiple regression analysis was utilized to identify the significant set of predictors of license performance per licensure examination. A stepwise procedure was used to select the best model. The study concludes that the performance of graduates in the fields of agriculture, criminology, and teacher education in their respective licensure examinations can best be predicted by their high school grade point average and admission test scores, whereas the performance of graduates in the field of forestry in their licensing exam is best explained by their performance in their secondary education curriculum.&#x0D; &#x0D; Received: 25 August 2022 / Accepted: 20 October 2022 / Published: 5 November 2022

Admission Grades as Predictors of Medical Students' Academic Performance: A Cross-Sectional Study from Saudi Arabia.

Background: Admission to medical school is competitive, and different countries use various tests in addition to high school grades to minimize selection bias. A few studies have been conducted to evaluate the usefulness of these tests as predictors for students' academic performance. In this article, we aimed to assess factors that influenced students' grades in medical school. Methods: A cross-sectional study included all students who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Jazan University between 2018 and 2020. Scores of the included participants were extracted from the registry of Jazan University, and additional questions about study habits were completed by the included students. Descriptive, univariate, and multivariate analyses were performed for the factors that impacted academic performance. Results: There were 331 included candidates, and the majority of them were female (53%). About 60% of the participants were medical residents at the time of the study, and 40% were interns. Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that grades in high school and the pre-requisite tests were positively associated with students' academic performance. Further, studying more than two hours per day was positively correlated with better grades in medical school. Conclusion: Scores of the admission tests can serve as predictors for student performance in medical school. National studies are deemed essential to evaluate additional admission tests for medical school, an action that would minimize selection bias.

Increasing the Representation of Black Men in Medicine by Addressing Systems Factors.

In 2015, data released by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) showed that there were more Black men applying and matriculating to medical school in 1978 than 2014. The representation of Black men in medicine is a troubling workforce issue that was identified by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine as a national crisis. While premedical pathway programs have contributed to increased workforce diversity, alone they are insufficient to accelerate change. In response, the AAMC and the National Medical Association launched a new initiative in August 2020, the Action Collaborative for Black Men in Medicine, to address the systems factors that influence the trajectory to medicine for Black men. The authors provide a brief overview of the educational experiences of Black boys and men in the United States and, as members of the Action Collaborative, describe their early work. Using research, data, and collective lived experiences, the Action Collaborative members identified premedical and academic medicine systems factors that represented opportunities for change. The premedical factors include financing and funding, information access, pre-health advisors, the Medical College Admission Test, support systems, foundational academics, and alternative career paths. The academic medicine factors include early identification, medical school recruitment and admissions, and leadership accountability. The authors offer several points of intervention along the medical education continuum, starting as early as elementary school through medical school matriculation, for institutional leaders to address these factors as part of their diversity strategy. The authors also present the Action Collaborative's process for leveraging collective impact to build an equity-minded action agenda focused on Black men. They describe their initial focus on pre-health advising and leadership accountability and next steps to develop an action agenda. Collective impact and coalition building will facilitate active, broad engagement of partners across sectors to advance long-term systems change.

Mapping the applicants’ learnability: a discourse analysis of assessors’ talk of admission tests for Swedish specialist music teacher education

ABSTRACT This article concerns assessors’ use of predictions of applicants’ ability to learn when assessing admission tests for specialist music teacher education in Sweden. The data consist of stimulated-recall interviews with video-recorded admission tests as stimuli, and the analyses are based on discourse psychology with a focus on the variations, functions, and effects of the assessors’ statements about learning opportunities. The results highlight several ways of talking about applicants’ learnability, based on the view that learnability is a matter of teacher help, learning time, applicant age, and talent. Based on these results, learnability can be considered a selection tool, legitimised with reference to the assessors as experts able to foresee and make decisions about applicants’ future development opportunities. In this sense, the test contexts can be seen as permeated by educational traditions in which discourses about learnability govern the assessors’/masters’ decisions.

Comparative analysis of written corrective feedback strategies: a linear growth modeling approach

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the development of English article accuracy in second language writing following direct or indirect corrective feedback (CF). Participants were 56 middle-school-aged learners of English nested within four classrooms who were studying for the writing portion of the Secondary School Admission Test. In this longitudinal analysis, each student completed four essays, with a weekly gap between each assignment. On the measures of writing accuracy, adolescent students in the direct CF group demonstrated increasing trajectories of accuracy with English article usage compared to the indirect CF group. Additionally, there was a significant difference in improvement by proficiency level: for lower proficiency learners, but not higher proficiency learners, both indirect and direct corrective feedback resulted in improvement in English article accuracy. The findings suggest that CF treatments designed to enhance a learner’s accuracy can be influenced by the learner’s existing proficiency, at least among adolescents.
