The Anonymity of the New Testament History Books: A Stylistic Device in the Context of Greco-Roman and Ancient Near Eastern Literature

AbstractThe anonymity of the NT historical books should not be regarded as peculiar to early Christian literature nor should it be interpreted in the context of Greco-Roman historiography. The striking fact that the NT Gospels and Acts do not mention their authors' names has its literary counterpart in the anonymity of the OT history books, whereas OT anonymity itself is rooted in the literary conventions of the Ancient Near East. Just as in the OT, where the authors of books that belonged to the genre of wisdom and prophetic literature were usually named while historical works were written anonymously, only the NT letters and the Apocalypse were published under their authors' names while the narrative literature of the NT remained anonymous. The authorial intent of the Gospels' anonymity can also be deduced from its ancient Near Eastern and OT background. Unlike the Greek or Roman historian who, among other things, wanted to earn praise and glory for his literary achievements from both his contemporaries and posterity, the history writer in the Ancient Near East sought to disappear as much as possible behind the material he presented and to become its invisible mouthpiece. By adopting the stylistic device of anonymity from OT historiography the Evangelists of the NT implied that they regarded themselves as comparatively insignificant mediators of a subject matter that deserved the full attention of the readers. The anonymity of the Gospels is thus rooted in a deep conviction concerning the ultimate priority of their subject matter.

"Judaizing" Christian Interpretations of the Prophets As Seen by Saint Jerome

AbstractAmong the many differing interpretations reported by St. Jerome is the set ascribed to "our Judaizers," who are in reality Christian interpreters with whom Jerome disagrees. In his own exegesis of the prophets, Jerome accepts both the literal/historical meaning of the "Hebrews" (Jews) as it relates to Israel's past (Old Testament history), and the spiritual/allegorical meaning of the church as it relates to the present or future. The interpretations that Jerome regards as "Judaizing" are almost all attempts to assign a literal meaning to the future. It is this combination (literal and future) that Jerome rejects as "Judaizing."

What is a god? Metatheistic assumptions in Old Testament Yahwism(s)

In this article, the author provides a prolegomena to further research attempting to answer a most undamental and basic question – much more so than what has thus far been the case in the disciplines of Old Testament theology and history of Israelite religion. It concerns the implicit assumptions in the Hebrew Bible’s discourse about the fundamental nature of deity. In other words, the question is not, “What is YHWH like?” but rather , “what, according to the Old Testament texts, is a god?”

lead editorial in Friend for September, 1 876 was titled The Ministry of Women. Its impetus came from an essay by the journalist Frances Power Cobbe1, but soon turned to question related to the Friends. have observed, the author stated, a readiness to take up lamentation over supposed decline in the numbers of women preachers amongst Friends. We doubt the reality ofthe fact. He noted that in the latest five-year period, the ratio of persons recorded as ministers was three men to two women; and looking for relative he went on, drawn from the obvious fitness of things, from the facts of the New Testament history (where all the Apostles were men), or the facts in the first generation of Friends, sixty percent ofmen to forty of the other sex does not seem an undue preponderance of men.2 author unfortunately mingled relative with real numbers and looked only at the most recent period. He was thus mistaken in doubting that the numbers of women ministers in the Society had declined. Leaving aside the question ofwhat would be fitting proportion, both the numbers and the proportion ofwomen ministers declined significantly over the course of the century. Behind the statistics, which can be pieced together from several sources, stand more substantive issues concerning opportunities and attitudes relating to Quaker women's ministries in the nineteenth century. What, for example, might have contributed to such decline? Is there any connection between numbers and the character of women's ministries in this period?
