An Ecosystem (ECO) Approach on Wisdom Societies and Sociotechnical Systems

Abstract: This paper explores the challenges and expresses some reflections on information and Knowledge/Wise (KW) societies and Socio-technical Systems (SS) based on an Organizational Eco-systems (ECOs) approach. It considers the SS constituting KW societies as a set of heterogeneous and interactive actors and presents considerations on the challenges faced by an organizational Ecosystem (ECO), challenges that require organizations actions towards treatment of organizations as living beings inserted in ECOs, aiming to leverage organizational synergism and collaborative efforts; information partnership and collaborative relationships between ECOs members; a more fairly shared leadership, empowering bottom up processes on organizational ECOs decision making. It is presented a brief case regarding Brazil’s Public Research and Development arrangement “National Institute of Science and Technology in Micro and Nano-electonic Systems” (NAMITEC), relating this initiative advances and problems in terms of multi-organizational cooperation and transference of technological knowledge to the productive sector and to society.

Study of process parameters and formative mechanism of patterns on a dip-pen nanolithography array using molecular dynamics simulations

The process parameters, pattern transfer mechanism, and pattern characterizations of alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on a dip-pen nanolithography array are studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The effects of the type of probe tip, distance between probe tips, deposition temperature, probe tip velocity, probe tip radius, and humidity are evaluated in terms of molecular transference, alkanethiol meniscus characteristics, surface adsorption energy, number of transferred chains, and pattern characteristics. The simulation results clearly show that the molecular transfer ability of a conical tip array is better than that of a pyramidal tip array. For a conical tip array, the number of transferred chains increases with decreasing distance between tips, whereas for a pyramidal tip array, the number of transferred chains decreases. When the deposition temperature increases, the number of transferred molecules, the size of the pattern deposited on the substrate, and the density of molecular packing significantly increase due to an increase in molecular kinetic energy. The number of transferred chains significantly decreases with increasing tip velocity. The number of transferred molecules and meniscus size increase with increasing humidity.

One or Many? Commentary on Paper by Debra Rothschild

This discussion of Rothschild's case history of a multiple personality disorder (MPD) treatment situates the issue of integration versus multiple self states in terms of cultural values, psychoanalytic theory, and transference–countertransference experience of MPD patients and therapists. Views from autobiographies of multiple personalities are included, and some questions are raised about the relationship of “parts” to traumatic experience: When, and for whom, is integration a treatment goal? When is dissociation a characterological defense, and when do the parts each hold separate traumatic knowledge? How does this question bear on treatment—what gets integrated, the knowledge or the parts? Are termination and integration simultaneous? A recommendation is offered for a wider, more complex view of narrative and historicity in the understanding of narrative reconstruction. A concrete focus on veridicality can be a defense against the overwhelming nature of traumatic experience. A final view is offered which positions the author as more distant from integration as a goal than is Rothschild.

Flipped optical systems

In the standard refraction routine, a Jackson cross-cylinder is reversed in front of the eye by the process of flipping it about its handle. Reverse telescopes have applications in low vision. In ophthalmoscopy, the practitioner views a patient's retina using light that traverses the eye in a direction opposite to that involved in vision. These represent examples of flipped systems that are involved in optometry. The purpose of this paper is to examine what happens to the optical character of an arbitrary optical system when it is flipped in this manner. The analysis is in terms of the ray transference of the system and, because the transference completely characterises the first-order optics of a system, is complete within the limitations of linear optics. It allows for elements in the system to be astigmatic and decentred. An expression is derived for the transference of the flipped system in terms of the transference of the system itself. Expressions are also obtained for the fundamental first-order optical properties and the dioptric power of the flipped system. Three numerical examples are given in the Appendix.

The ray transference of a reversed optical system

The optical character of an optical system is changed if the system is reversed. This is as true of eyes as it is of telescopes. In vision light traverses the eye from cornea to retina; in ophthalmoscopy the practitioner views the retina via light traversing the eye in the reverse direction. The purpose of this paper is to determine the relationship of the optical character of the reversed system to that of the system itself. The result is in terms of the ray transference of the system. Since the ray transference gives a complete characterization of the first-order optics of a system the analysis is complete in this sense as well. Explicit expressions are also presented for the effect of reversal on the six fundamental first-order optical properties of the system.

New England and New Labour: Retracing American Templates for theChange For ChildrenProgramme?

The current New Labour administration in England is intent on the “modernisation” of children's services, and this is reflected in the Every Child Matters: Change for Children programme. When examining the foundation of this programme, a key element that is lacking in most accounts is any discussion of changes to children's services in the United States. It is maintained that these are significant and that some of comments of Pierre Bourdieu and Loic Wacquant on the role that the United States fulfils in terms of the international transference in ideas associated with social welfare discourses may aid our understanding of this process. Specific areas of change in the United States that appear to have had an impact in England include the policy aspiration to make services more “business-like” and “outcomes” oriented, and this is reflected by, for example, influential “reforms” introduced in states such as Vermont. The emphasis on “prevention” in children's services in England is, moreover, likely to have been influenced by policy and practice developments in the United States. In conclusion, however, it is maintained that issues connected to policy transfers are complex and that it remains important to locate such transfers within the context of neoliberalism.

Teaching Counseling Students to Understand and Use Immediacy

The authors examine the counseling skill of immediacy, emphasizing its importance in counselor education. Ways of addressing and teaching the skill are proposed, with an emphasis on a “gentle approach” to reduce risks associated with applying the skill and to minimize students' resistance to applying it. Examples are provided of narratives that model immediacy throughout the counseling process.

Relation between anterior and posterior converter systems.

A corrected or uncorrected human eye may be astigmatic and noncoaxial. The first-order (i.e., paraxial) character of arbitrary astigmatic and noncoaxial optical systems can be compared quantitatively in terms of the ray transference of either an anterior or a posterior converter system. This article derives equations that give the relationships between the transferences of the anterior and posterior converter systems.

First Loves and Prime Adventures: Adolescent Expressions in Adult Analyses

Adolescent processes are frequently overlooked in the analyses of adults. The author focuses on the importance and meaning of first loves in the lives of adolescents and demonstrates how these prime experiences reverberate in the analyses of adults. She suggests that adolescent experiences cannot simply or usefully be reduced to preoedipal or oedipal meanings. Explanations for the neglect of adolescent phenomena are offered both historically, in terms of Freud's lack of understanding of adolescence, and clinically, in terms of countertransference and transference. It is argued that the intense affects of adolescence contribute to the resistance to re-experiencing them in treatment.

An on site stress workshop for teachers: The creation of a therapeutic group environment

This paper describes an ongoing stress workshop conducted for 5 years in an elementary school. The school was located in an economically deprived area in the Bronx, New York. Similarities and differences between on-site workshops and therapy groups are discussed. The developmental stages of the group and its corresponding issues are analyzed in terms of group process, transference, and resistance. Illustrative vignettes are presented. The positive effects of group dynamic and group therapy interventions on the participating group as well as on nongroup personnel is demonstrated. Suggestions for adapting group therapy methods in school settings are also presented.

Triangulation as splitting in the service of ambivalence

Ambivalence mastery is postulated as a primary dynamic in triangulation, by appealing to splitting and other defense mechanism strategies in synthesizing incompatible affect. The rationale of admissible triangles in balance theory is critically evaluated, and is elaborated in terms of directional vectors and the interpretation of the triangle as a transformed variant of the double bind. Using an illustrative case presentation where an adolescent was instrumental in forming a coalition with his father against an uncle, a theoretical model is developed reconceptualizing various family systems tenets and addressing inconsistencies in hypothesized mechanisms. Ambivalence is analyzed in terms of transference and as a prerequisite of triangulation, the role of the triangulated in relational stability is examined, and the dyad/triad evolution is elaborated. The model is then related to the basic theoretical positions in family systems literature.

Transference and Countertransference in the Group's Response to the Therapist's Pregnancy

This paper focuses on the impact of the therapist's pregnancy on the functioning and dynamics of a hospital-based therapy group. This impact is conceptualized in terms of transference, countertransference and group boundaries. Each member of the group related the experience of the therapist's pregnancy to his or her own family situation, particularly the early infant-mother dyad. Sexual images proved extremely powerful not only in relation to fantasies about the primal scene but also to the members' current sexual identities. Different aspects of this were expressed by the male and female members of the group. After initial elaboration and working through they began to consider that the pregnancy could become a metaphor for personal change, psychic birth and rebirth.

Cohesion & Quality In Deaf & Hearing Children’s Written English

Although it is well known that the English writing skills of deaf individuals are usually considerably inferior to those of hearing peers, there is a need for information on the exact nature of their difficulties and of the effects of different linguistic elements on writing success. Deaf and hearing children at two grade levels (fourth and eighth) provided written texts for an analysis of text structure and quality. Deaf writers used as many cohesive devices as hearing writers but not as many different lexical items per device. Hearing readers who ranked the texts discussed the effectiveness of different devices in relation to coherence and intelligibility, focusing on vocabulary, information presentation, and coherence. Their attempts at comprehension followed a search for unexpressed relational propositions in order to account for text connectedness and coherence that were unrelated to the structural devices of cohesion. The deaf children’s texts are discussed in terms of possible language transference (from American Sign Language) and individual interlanguage.

Phase structures, water binding, and molecular dynamics in liquid crystalline and frozen states of the system Triton X-100-D 2O : A deuteron and carbon NMR study

The phase diagram of the system Triton X-100-deuterium oxide was constructed with the aid of deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance. Two liquid crystalline phases were detected. Oriented samples of these mesophases exhibited spectra consistent with cylindrical and lamellar structures, in agreement with the common features of middle neat phases, respectively. The hydration of Triton X-100 by D 2O was studied over a wide temperature and concentration range. The solvent binding capacity of the polyoxyethylene moiety of this detergent was determined by the method of nonfreezable water. The molar ratios D 2O/Triton were almost independent of the Triton concentration after freezing of the bulk solvent. On the other hand, the amount of nonfreezable water decreased considerably with temperature. This behavior was interpreted in terms of transference of water molecules to the ice phase. Comparison of 2H-NMR relaxation times and 13C-NMR line widths in the liquid crystalline states of the Triton-water system suggested that the mobility of the Triton molecule is most restricted at the hydrophilic-hydrophobic interface. The mobility gradient was found to persist at low temperatures when the bulk solvent is frozen. Fourier transform 2H-NMR spectra revealed that macroscopic freezing of micellar and hexagonal (middle phase) samples obviously causes a rearrangement of the detergent molecules. A lamellar phase structure adopted by Triton in the ice could explain these observations.

ChemInform Abstract: EFFECT OF ANION BASICITY IN INFLUENCING THE ACIDITY FUNCTION OF CONCENTRATED AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF OXYACIDS

The measurement of Hammett acidity of anhydrous acids and their concentrated aqueous solutions by amine indicators is viewed in terms of the transference of a proton to the —NH2 group from a solvating cluster provided by the medium. It is argued that a measure of the difficulty with which the proton can be transferred should be given by the optical (Lewis) basicity of the deprotonated solvating cluster. Optical basicities for clusters of various sizes are calculated for the systems H3PO4+ H2O, H2SO4+ H2O and HClO4+ H2O, and the values are found to increase with increasing water content of the solvating cluster in line with the decreasing acidity of the medium. When they are plotted against the H0 values of the corresponding acid solutions, straight line relationships are observed which are especially good when based upon two molecule and three molecule solvating clusters. These relationships indicate the dependence of H0 not only upon the water content but also the decreasing basicity in going from phosphate to sulphate to perchlorate. Changes in H0 with change of indicator and the prediction of H0, e.g. for oleum and orthosilicic acid, are also discussed.
