THE EFFECT OF THE PREVIEW, QUESTION, READ, SUMMARIZE, AND TEST (PQRST) TECHNIQUE PLUS CHARACTER JOURNAL ENTRIES (CJE) PROJECT TOWARDS STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION

This study employed a pre-experimental research design to determine the effectiveness of using the Preview, Questions, Read, Summarize, and Test (PQRST) technique plus Character Journal Entries (CJE) in teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts. The participants of this research were SMA Negeri 9 Pontianak students in the tenth-grade students, consisting of 252 students in academic 2023/2024. The sample was chosen using cluster random sampling facilitated by the Spinning Wheel website. The study’s sample consisted of 30 students from X E. This research used a test as its instrument. The test consisted of 20 multiple types of questions. The calculation was done using SPSS v.23. The researcher used the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test for the paired test. The result shows the Asymp.Sig (W) value (0,000) < W table (critical values table) (0,05). As a result, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted, meaning the PQRST technique plus CJE project has been significantly effective towards students’ reading comprehension, with the result of effect size 2,45.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERACTIVE DIGITAL ENGLISH BOOK FOR READING SKILL IN TENTH GRADE STUDENTS AT MA MASALIKIL HUDA

Reading, which involves character decoding, is a complex cognitive process with the goal of understanding the text. Reading in English gives students the opportunity to pursue interest and knowledge in learning English. Reading is a way to teach other speaking skills. Most students are quiet during lessons because they find learning boring. Therefore, teachers need media that makes the learning process more interesting. The purposeiof this study was to determine the effectiveness of the Interactive Digital English Book (IDEB) in improving students' reading skills. This study was conducted on 42 MA Masalikil Huda Jepara tenth-grade students who were divided into two classes. This research is a quantitative type of researchiusing quasi-experimental prei- test and posti- test research methods. The dataithat came from the research were gathered using tests in the form of multiple-choice tests for the students. The average score for the experimental group that has been calculated is 74.5 points and that of the control group was 55.7 points. T-Analysis Results: Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.07, greater than 0.05, besides that the T-test is greater than the T-tablei(2.201 > 2.021). As a result, the use of English Digital Textbooks has been found to be effective in improving students' reading skills.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE PROCESS OF TRANSLATING RECOUNT TEXTS BY USING GOOGLE TRANSLATION MACHINE

The research aims to find out the process of translating recount texts by using Google Translation Machine. This study integrated a qualitative phenomenological approach of a group of 18 tenth-grade students at MA Miftahul Jannah, Palangka Raya. Online questionnaires via Google Forms and unstructured follow-up interviews were employed. The 15-question questionnaire, featuring both open-ended and closed-ended formats, explored aspects ranging from general usage of resources, such as Google Translation Machine, to specific processes in translating recount texts. The result of this research showed the students' process in translation began with comprehensively reading the text to gain full understanding. Following this initial step, they mentally process their translation before writing it down. In the translating phase, Google Translate was an essential tool. Some students used it directly, while others employed it as a guide for their translations. The focus here was on the accurate selection of words, phrases, and sentences. Once the translation was complete, the majority of the students cross-checked their work against the original text to maintain fidelity. However, a small number skipped this critical revision step. This highlighted the necessity of reinforcing the importance of evaluation and revision stages in the translation process.

Difficulties in studying the scientific concepts from the view point of 10th grade students at Irbid governorate

This study sought to identify the difficulties of studying the scientific concepts among the tenth-grade students in Irbid governorate. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, a questionnaire was used to measure the students’ view point about difficulties they faced in learning scientific concepts. The questionnaire contained three areas: content, teachers and students. The sampling method involved selecting tenth-grade students from the first Irbid Directorate of Education at the end of the 2018-2019 academic year. A total of 415 students were included in the study; the gender distribution was nearly equal, and they were grouped according to their GPA. The results of the study showed that these three domains were a source of determining the difficulty levels. The students’ domain came first, followed by teachers, and content ranked last. The results also showed that there were statistically significant differences in the sources of difficulty due to gender differences in males, and due to the average difference in the benefit of students whose grades were less than 84%. In light of the results, the study framed a set of recommendations, including the need to emphasize the activation of technology in teaching, and holding lectures showing the importance of science and scientists.

PENERAPAN MODEL TEAM ASSISTED INDIVIDUALIZATION (TAI) UNTUK MENINGKATKAN HASIL BELAJAR MATEMATIKA

This study aims to improve the mathematics learning outcomes of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 6 Denpasar through the implementation of the Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) model in trigonometry. The research methodology utilized is classroom action research, involving collaboration between teachers and students. The steps of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) are integrated into the teaching process, where students work in small teams to assist each other in understanding trigonometric concepts. Classroom action research is conducted in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Student learning outcomes data are obtained through formative tests and observations during the learning process. The research results are expected to provide insights into the effectiveness of the Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) model in enhancing the understanding and academic achievement of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 6 Denpasar in trigonometry. The implications of this research are anticipated to contribute positively to the development of innovative and student-oriented mathematics teaching methods.

Adapting player styles to enhance learning and retention in high school science education

The impact of player styles in game-based learning on academic performance is a significant consideration, with the exploratory style being one of these styles. Despite the initial random sampling of 60 tenth-grade students to ensure unbiased representation, the sampling method became purposeful as students with the exploratory player style were selectively placed in the first experimental group. Pre-test data, collected using Bartle’s player styles questionnaire, informed the categorization of students into groups based on their styles, enhancing sampling accuracy. The Explorer player style students formed one group, while students with other styles constituted a separate group. All students completed the Player Styles questionnaire and a pre-learning test. Subsequently, an exploratory-style game was provided to all students, followed by learning and retention tests. The data analysis method employed for this study was MANCOVA. The outcomes of the multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) demonstrate a substantial multivariate F value of 7.075 (df = 2) with a significant level at p < .05. This outcome substantiates the existence of a notable distinction between the students belonging to the first group (exemplifying the explorer player style) and those in the second experimental group (encompassing the socializer, achiever, and killer player styles) concerning the dependent variables (learning and retention). The observed distinction is in favor of the first experimental group, underscoring the potential influence of player styles on the variables under consideration.

The Improving Student’s Vocabulary through Rewriting English Song Lyric “The Shawn Mendes Foundation Playlist”

The research investigates the efficacy of using English song lyrics, specifically drawn from Shawn Mendes' album "The Shawn Mendes Foundation Playlist," to enhance vocabulary skills among tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Comal. Employing a quantitative experimental approach, the research involved 70 students divided into experimental and control groups, undergoing pre-tests and post-tests to gauge vocabulary improvement. Results indicated a significant enhancement in vocabulary scores among students in the experimental group exposed to the treatment of rewriting English song lyrics. Conversely, the control group exhibited mixed outcomes, with some students experiencing declines, while others maintained or slightly improved their scores. Despite encountered difficulties in comprehending song lyrics and articulating ideas, proposed solutions included frequent exposure to English songs and active engagement in predicting song meanings. The findings underscore the potential of utilizing song lyrics, particularly from popular albums, as a valuable pedagogical tool for fostering vocabulary development in English language learning settings, thus advocating for their integration into language curricula.

Students’ Perception Toward Teachers’ Implementation of Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) in EFL Classroom at Madrasah Aliyah

Technology and education are two things that influence each other. Technology in education is not only about the tools, applications, and software but also about how the teachers integrate the technology to present the learning model and learning content in learning activity. Therefore, this research aimed to find out the students’ perceptions toward teachers’ implementation of technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) in EFL classroom. This research is descriptive research and was located at one of madrasah Aliyah in Pekanbaru. There were 106 tenth-grade students as the respondents. A questionnaire is used to collect the research data on students’ perceptions. The finding revealed that students’ perception toward teachers’ implementation of TPACK in EFL classroom is positive perception, with a total mean score is 3.02, which means EFL students have a positive perception about teachers’ implementation of TPACK in EFL classrooms. Based on this result, it can be said that the teachers have the ability and the awareness related to the importance of implementing TPACK to support the teaching and learning process, especially to increase students’ comprehension and motivation in learning English.

Stimulating The Reading Proficiency Of 10th Grade Students Through The Application Of Wordwall In Recount Text

The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the Wordwall application in stimulating reading skills among tenth-grade students at X-10 in SMA 1 Sutojayan. It employs a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test methodology, following a quantitative research framework. The process includes three stages: 1) pre-test, 2) treatment, and 3) post-test. To ensure data reliability, tests were piloted on students with similar proficiency levels. Data collection involved administering tests, and statistical analysis. Results showed a significant improvement in student reading achievement, with scores increasing from 77.24 to 86.24 after implementing the Wordwall application for recount text instruction. The paired sample t-test showed the distinction (p = 0.000), underscoring the Wordwall application's effectiveness in enhancing recount text reading achievement among tenth-grade students at X-10 in SMA Negeri 1 Sutojayan Blitar.

How Multiple Representations Using Cyber–Physical System to Teach Rectilinear Motion Improves Learning and Creativity

Learning physics can be seen by many as a problem, as the standard method of learning tends to focus on remembering and using concepts that fail to construct meaning. To overcome this problem in teaching rectilinear motion, we implemented multiple representations using a cyber–physical system that enables interaction between a physical model and the real world. We did so by using a microcomputer system housed inside a ball, including motion and force sensors. This system communicated with the teacher’s laptop in order to display the corresponding data via a projector. The study was conducted with 49 tenth-grade students across five sessions on rectilinear motion. Using a pre- and post-test, we observed that the experimental group performed significantly better than the control group, both in terms of learning as well as in the development of creativity (fluency and flexibility). With guidance from the teacher, the multiple representations allowed the students to improve their learning and creativity by connecting various forms of representation. In other words, the students were able to connect both abstract and concrete views through a real-world, physical experience. Our study reveals the potential of cyber–physical systems within the teaching–learning process for physics, specifically rectilinear motion, and how such a system supports multiple representations.

Career Development of Generation Z through Technology and Media: Implementation in Vocational High Schools

This article examined the implementation of a workshop as a preparatory strategy for Generation Z students at SMK Negeri 3 Banjarmasin to face increasingly complex career challenges. The workshop aimed to deepen students’ comprehension of utilizing technology and media in career services. The research involved 33 tenth-grade students who were evaluated through pre-tests and post-tests regarding their understanding before and after the workshop on September 24-30, 2023. The pre-test results showed positive evaluations, with the majority of participants considering the workshop to have provided accurate career information (90.9%) and to be relevant to the latest developments in the job market (90.9%). After the workshop, there was a positive improvement in participant assessments. Understanding of technological developments increased to 87.9%, while the ability to utilize technology reached 90.9%. The workshop was considered effective in developing career skills (81.8%) and guiding students to optimize their talents for the job market (84.9%). The workshop followed the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, recognizing students as unique individuals with potential that can be developed. The design stage involved identifying student assets, participatory planning, and focusing on the use of technology as a key aspect of career development. The workshop participants were 33 10th-grade students, selected based on the specific needs of the first batch. The ABCD approach considered student diversity, encouraging active participation in every workshop session. Data collection applied the ABCD approach with participatory methods, while instrument development involved local assets and relevant technology. Data analysis included quantitative statistical analysis and comparison of pre-test and post-test questionnaire results to measure changes in student understanding. Overall, the workshop was effective in improving students’ understanding of career trends, skill development, and technology utilization. These results affirmed the role of the workshop as a strategic tool in equipping Generation Z to face the dynamics of the competitive job market.

DISCOVERY LEARNING AND POWTOON IN TEACHING WRITING RECOUNT TEXT: STUDENTS RESPONSES AND CHALLENGES

This study investigates students' responses to utilizing discovery learning using PowToon for writing recount texts. The students' responses include four variables from Muhlisin (2018): attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. Moreover, the challenges encountered by students are also examined. This research utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach. This research focuses on tenth-grade students from a vocational high school in Cimahi. Data is gathered through questionnaires, tests, and interviews. The findings indicated that the research was well-received by the students. The methodology and instructional materials facilitated the student's comprehension of the course, leading to increased motivation in producing a well-written recount text. The integration of PowToon in teaching recount text had a favorable response from the students. They continued to have difficulties in grammar and vocabulary, as indicated by the low scores on the test results. The assessment labels most students' writing exam results as good or high percentages. Improving Student’s Speaking Ability Through Role Play to Teach the Tenth-Grade Students

The objective of this research was to improve the Tenth Grade students speaking ability of SMA Negri 3 Pontianak in the academic year 2021/2022 with the use of Role Play technique. It was a classroom action research which consisted of three cycles. The subjects of this research were students of Tenth Grade B Class. The data were qualitative data, it was collected by observing the teaching and learning process. The data were in the form of observation checklist and field note. The procedures of the research were planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The result of this research showed that use of Role Playing technique, it found that the speaking abilty of the student had singnificant improved, it helped the student to be more braver and confident to speak in English. Improving Students’ Reading Ability Through Storytelling Strategy

The purpose of the research was to find out the improvement of students' reading ability, especially in report text through Storytelling strategy to the tenth-grade students'' of Multimedia class in SMKN 2 Singkawang. It's because of some problems faced in SMKN 2 Singkawang, especially tenthgrade students of Multimedia class. The student needs help to determine the main idea and supporting detail in the report text; also, the student needs to be more active and engaged with teaching and learning English, especially in the report text. This research was done by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out conduct two cycles, and in each cycle, there were three meetings. The subject of research was the tent-grade students of Multimedia class. The data was collected from tenth-grade students of Multimedia class. The researcher used reading tests, observation checklists, and field notes to collect data. For the data analysis researcher used quantitative and qualitative data. The instrument used to collect data was a reading test. The data analysis showed that the mean score increased in the second cycle, the mean score in the pre-test was 72, and in the first cycle was 77. The finding of this research showed that the storytelling strategy was effective to improving students’ reading ability in enhancing students reading ability. Developing a Web-Based Descriptive Text Writing Material for Tenth-Grade Students

This study aimed to develop a teaching material which is applicable in teaching descriptive text writing for tenth-grade students of Senior High School. Branch’s ADDIE model was used in the study in developing the instructional teaching material. Due to certain situation during the process of this study, the ADDIE model was only implemented for three phases only namely analyzing, designing, and developing (ADD). The purpose of designing the final product was to support teachers in teaching descriptive text writing. A need analysis was conducted in this research to gain information regarding the teacher and students’ needs. The designed product of the research was a web-based teaching material in form of a learning website. The developed web-based teaching material consisted of three chapters. It covers the descriptive text learning, grammatical aspect of descriptive text, and descriptive text writing lesson. There are activities on the lesson and a test for each chapter to measure students’ comprehension of related chapter. Furthermore, a validation made by the teacher displayed a percentage of 87% on the first questionnaire and 88% for the second. Both of the result can be labelled as “Very Good”. The result indicated that the designed product is suitable to be used in classroom to teach descriptive text writing for tenth-grade student of senior high school.Keyword: Developmental Research, Web-Based Learning Material, Descriptive Text Writing

Doing Mathematics Outdoor

Abstract This article delves into the significance of bodily experiences in the context of outdoor STEAM activities. It features a case study involving three tenth-grade students who engage in outdoor tasks – which are part of an outdoor STEAM trail – using the MathCityMap app. The research focuses on the students’ emerging strategies when dealing with two modelling tasks by integrating the modelling cycle phases with a perspective on embodiment that encompasses learning as navigating mathematical places. By intertwining these theoretical stances, the analysis uncovers the students’ strategies and seeks to describe their orientations during the experience. Despite the students not reaching the expected solutions, they bodily engage with the modelling tasks in meaningful ways, employing an array of various strategies. Trying to overcome the separation between domains, classically emphasised in the modelling context, the authors show how bodily engagement operates at their intersection and discuss the relevance of their approach for STEAM activities.

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND COMPARISON DEGREE BY USING STICK PUPPET

Learning grammar, particularly understanding tenses, poses challenges for students, often leading to boredom during lessons. To address this, researchers propose integrating new media, such as stick puppets, into grammar instruction to enhance student engagement. The aim is to cultivate enthusiasm, involvement, and a deeper understanding of English grammar. This study was conducted as Classroom Action Research (CAR) with tenth grade students of SMKN 3 Jember. It explored the efficacy of stick puppets as an alternative method to improve Grammar Comprehension. This research was spanning one cycle with three implementation meetings and a post-test. It utilized various data collection techniques was included; grammar scores, teacher observations, interviews, student questionnaires, and classroom observation sheets. From the implementation of stick puppets, the findings revealed notable improvement in the Grammar Comprehension of tenth-grade students at SMKN 3 Jember with a 95.65% success rate. The students demonstrated increased proficiency across vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar usage, and content which indicated that stick puppets not only enhanced comprehension but also fostered active participation and student interest.

Implementation of Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model Using Maple Software in Solving a Trigonometry Material Problem

This study aims to investigate the implementation and effectiveness of the PBL learning model with Maple Software in solving Trigonometry problems during mathematics lessons. It is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The participants were 20 tenth-grade students from an vocational school in the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic year. Data were collected through student questionnaires and written tests. The questionnaires assessed student understanding in solving Trigonometry problems with Maple Software, while the tests included 5 questions to evaluate problem-solving skills using the software. The findings indicate that: (1) The PBL model with Maple Software enhances student engagement and effectively solves Trigonometry problems. (2) The PBL model using Maple Software is effective in improving students' problem-solving abilities in Trigonometry.

Does Habits of Mind-Based Instruction Catalyze Literacy Development? The Case of Jordanian EFL Learners

This study examines the potential effect of habits of mind-based instruction on Jordanian EFL tenth-grade students’ literacy development. A quasi-experimental design was used, as two intact sections (n=35) were drawn from a pool of five tenth-grade sections from Hay Al -Arqoub Basic Mixed School, a public school in the North-West Badia Department of Education, Mafraq (Jordan). The two sections were randomly distributed into a control group (n=18) and an experimental group (n=17). A pre-/post- test was used to assess the participants’ performance before and after the implementation of an eight-week habits of mind-based instructional program. Descriptive statistics of both central tendency and dispersion (e.g., means, Standard deviations, variance) were used to analyze the date. The findings revealed that the participants of the experimental group outperformed those in the control group in both reading and writing. The findings stress the importance of a conducive, non-threatening learning environment in which learners feel ‘safe’ to ask questions, engage in literacy-related activities, and interact with peers to achieve common goals. With practice, habits of mind become behaviors for students and teachers to build on, value, and use to handle situations in and outside the classroom.

EFEKTIVITAS PENDEKATAN KONSTRUKSIVISME TERHADAP PRESTASI BELAJAR EKONOMI PADA MATERI MODEL DIAGRAM INTERAKSI PELAKU EKONOMI SISWA KELAS X SMA NEGERI 1 ULUSUSUA TAHUN PELAJARAN 2023/2024

This research aims to evaluate the learning achievement of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Ulususua in economics subject by comparing the use of constructivism approach with PjBL Model learning. The method employed is quantitative research with a pos-test only control design. The research population consists of 27 tenth-grade students, selected randomly using simple random sampling. Data were collected through written tests and documentation. The tenth-grade class is designated as the experimental class. Data analysis is conducted using the t-test statistical analysis. The research findings reveal that the average post-test score of the experimental class is 80.8, while the control class is 67.6. Using a 5% significance level, the t-table value for df = 60 is 2.02 and 5.756. The analysis results indicate that t calculated > t-table, thus rejecting the null hypothesis. Consequently, there is a significant difference between the use of constructivism and non-constructivism approaches towards the learning achievement of economics among tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Ulususua in the academic year 2023/2024.
