Tempo magazine covers use strong visuals and striking illustrations to highlight the main topics of each issue. This research analyzes the visual meaning of three covers of the January 2024 edition of Tempo magazine—"Angan-anganan Satu Lapir," "Omon-omon Bansos," and "Operator President Jokowi"—using Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotic theory and visual analysis. This study examines elements such as illustrations, typography, colors and symbols on the cover to reveal the messages and themes conveyed. Qualitative methods are used to explore the message the magazine wants to convey. The research results show that cover design with the right use of color, typography, layout, visual identity, illustrations and infographics plays an important role in shaping readers' perceptions. Colors such as dark red and white reflect political pressure and honesty, while light blue creates a sense of stability. These symbols are effective in conveying the political dynamics of the 2024 Presidential Election in Indonesia and the impact of loyalty to President Jokowi on the election process and support for his son's candidacy.

Commodification of Workers in Tempo Magazine

Tempo Magazine commodifies workers through increased working hours, low wages, multiple tasks, and marketing promotions that become exchange value for the public. This research aims to reveal the commodification of workers in Tempo Magazine and fill the unique gaps in previous research. The paradigm used is critical because the researcher wants to show that Tempo Magazine journalists are considered commodities measured based on economic factors. Journalists are willing to exchange their labor and even spend time on holidays to meet sources for low wages. The data collection technique is carried out through observation; namely, the researcher observes the research object by classifying and combining articles in Tempo Magazine. Researchers also interviewed the Editor-in-Chief of Tempo Magazine, Tempo Magazine journalists, and eight former Tempo Magazine journalists as critical informants to see different sides of Tempo. The research results show that Tempo Magazine journalists do not apply a specific working time pattern when covering an issue. It is not uncommon for them to use their holiday time to meet sources. They are trapped in false consciousness and do not understand their exploitation by assuming that when they succeed in getting a source, it is a matter of prestige and will always be remembered. They also work more than regular hours but do not receive overtime pay or other compensation. In addition, photo works produced by journalists do not receive copyright protection. Tempo sold it without permission, and this is a copyright issue and protection of intellectual property rights in the media industry. The use or sale of images without permission can harm the creator financially and violate rights that should be protected. Journalists, as a profession that focuses on providing information, often support the human rights of others. However, they also face challenges and risks related to their human rights in their duties. Thus, this study confirms that worker commodification is for workers who are re-produced or renewed through exploitation processes such as increasing working time or intensifying the work process.

Open Source Intelligence as an Approach to Investigating Criminal Events by Journalists (Case Study of the 2019 Forest and Land Fires in the Investigation Report of the Trace of the Geni-Starting Corporation in Tempo Magazine)

Forest and land fires in Indonesia in 2019 reached 1.65 million hectares. Some of the burned areas are included in the concession areas of large corporations. The development of digital forensic studies makes investigations possible. One such method is Open Source Intelligence, which is defined as an intelligence gathering discipline that consists of gathering information from public or open sources and analyzing that information to produce valuable intelligence. The purpose of this research is to determine the use of Open Source Intelligence as an investigative approach used by journalists to uncover the facts of a crime. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with analysis of Digital Forensics theory, Newsmaking Criminology, and Journalism theories to see how Open Source Intelligence opportunities in revealing the facts of the 2019 forest and land fires committed by companies in South Sumatra, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.

Mediatization of corruption cases in Indonesia through comics journalism in Tempo magazine

Corruption in Indonesia is a never-ending and pervasive issue, as the numerous cases prove. Many public officials, businesspeople and private parties have been involved and found guilty in corruption trials. The verdict of the judges’ panel against the accused of corruption cases in Indonesia did not dampen the enthusiasm of several corruption perpetrators who were incarcerated at Sukamiskin Prison in Bandung. This research aims to examine the construction of news in the comics journalism format in Tempo magazine, specifically focusing on how corrupt behaviour in the form of bribery committed by criminals in Sukamiskin Prison is portrayed. This analysis is motivated by the mediatization theory, which is further supported by the mediatization of journalism. This research uses a semiotic-material approach that analyses Tempo comics journalism texts with a focus on elements of symbolism, timing and frames. The research found that Tempo mediated the news about bribery by grafters in Sukamiskin Prison through elements of comics based on journalistic practices. The mediation effort consists of two distinct stages: firstly, journalists on the field engage in the work and, secondly, the composer of the comic constructs the mediation.

The Implementation of Investigative Journalism in Tempo Magazine "Treasure of Tax Officials"

Investigative journalism is a form of news coverage in which journalists delve deeply into information or events that may expose corruption, analyze government policies or private company practices, or uncover economic, political, and cultural trends. Investigative news coverage is typically obtained by investigative journalists when they are interested in an issue and have a strong desire to find out something. Therefore, the work of investigative journalism is not constrained by time pressure; often, investigative journalists spend years, even decades, working on a single investigative report. In this study, the author employs the theory of critical discourse analysis by Teun A Van Dijk, which focuses on the textual dimensions of a magazine, news, or broadcast. Based on this, it is important to conduct a critical discourse analysis of Tempo magazine. This research analyzes two issues: microstructure and superstructure. The study also uses a qualitative descriptive approach, with observation as the data collection method. The results of this research show that, in terms of microstructure and superstructure discourse, Tempo magazine with the title "TREASURE OF TAX OFFICIALS" can be considered a means for the implementation of investigative journalism through the careful choice of words, language, sentence structure, and style, successfully uncovering a case of tax officials' corruption.

Social Movement in Framing Perspective: Omnibus Law Protest in Indonesia

This study aims to provide a framing perspective on the study of development communication. This study explains the causes of the emergence of social movements in Indonesia in rejecting the Omnibus Law. The protests against the Omnibus Law that occurred in various cities in Indonesia as a form of resistance to government policies were examined from the perspective of framing theory. The method used is text analysis with Robert N Entman’s framing framework. The unit of analysis is the Omnibus Law protest news published in Tempo Magazine in October 2020. The results of this study indicate that social movements to reject the Omnibus Law were carried out by various elements of society, ranging from workers, students, and other elements of society. Even though the Omnibus Law was finally signed by President Joko Widodo on October 5, 2020, the protest effort remained an important note that this law has many loopholes that are considered to be detrimental to elements of society, potentially damaging the environment, and weakening government authority area.

The Fight for the 2024 Presidential Election within the PDIP within the Framework of Tempo (Roland Barthes’ Semiotics Study on the Cover of the May 2021 Edition of Tempo Magazine)

Objective: At a time when parties participating in the 2024 election are busy forming coalitions to determine potential candidates for president, Even PDIP is busy manoeuvring politics on her body Alone. The rivalry between Puan Maharani and Ganjar Pranowo enlivened the determination of the presidential candidate in the PDIP body. This reality is raised on the cover of the October 25 to October 31, 2021, edition of Tempo magazine, which is conveyed in a cartoon illustration of a relay race between Joko Widodo, the baton holder, and Puan and Ganjar. The aim of understanding how Tempo's discourse on the nomination constellation within the PDI-P body is through the cover of Tempo Magazine, which is published in editions from October 25 to October 31, 2021. And is there an implicit value about the power that wants to be framed in the ideology Tempo interests? Methods: In understanding this, this research analyzes Roland Barthes' structural semiotics by analyzing the semiosis of markers and signs to know the denotative and connotative meanings of the cover of Tempo magazine and dismantle the myths brought by Tempo through its Semiotics. Result: From the results of the study, it was shown that during the discourse, there was a roar of competition within the PDI-P in proposing prospective candidates. The rumble is deeper in the discourse developed by Tempo because the existence of nepotism and clientelism is a myth in Barthes' semiotic concept.

REPRESENTASI FOTO PUBLISITAS POLITIK PUAN MAHARANI PADA MAJALAH TEMPO EDISI 19 – 25 SEPTEMBER 2022 (ANALISIS SEMIOTIKA CHARLES SANDERS PEIRCE)

Entering the political year ahead of the 2024 general elections, the public has started to feel the political temperature starting to warm up. This is marked by the start of popping up billboards for political figures who plan to advance in the 2024 general elections. The edition of the Ganjar Miss Puan magazine, September 19-25 2022, revealed how Puan did political publicity. In this tempo magazine it w, as ordered that Ganjar Pranowo's chances of becoming a presidential candidate through the PDI Perjuangan party were almost closed. The door is wide open for Puan Maharani to run as a presidential candidate through the PDI Perjuangan party. Using Peirce's semiotics, there are three trichotomies to analyze photojournalism, namely the first trichotomy of representament consisting of Qualisign, Sinsign, and Legisign. Trichoto is one of the two objects, consisting of icons, indexes, and symbols. Interpretant's third trichotomy consists of Rhema, Decisign, and Argument. Researchers analyzed five journalistic photos in-depth and were analyzed using the three trichotomies. The results of the research show that the 15 – 25 September 2022 edition of Tempo Magazine displays various forms of political publicity strategies carried out by Puan Maharani. This can be seen from most of Puan Maharani's journalistic photos by carrying out pure publicity and free-ride publicity strategies. Puan Maharani also often wears black clothes which means strong and elegant for her.

This research aims to describe the symbols on the cover of the October 2022 exclusive edition of Tempo magazine. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method approach using data collection techniques. data namely observation and documentation. The results of this study indicate that there are two language symbols on the cover of the October 2022 edition of weekly magazine Tempo, namely verbal language symbols (in the form of words and sentences written in Indonesian) and non-verbal in the form of pictures and graphic illustrations showing the contents of the news in the magazine. KONSTRUKSI FRASA ADJEKTIVAL DALAM MAJALAH TEMPO 2022: “DARI UTARA MEMBELA KAUM HAWA”

The purpose of this research is to (1) describe the types of adjective phrases, (2) describe the categories of attribute filling words in adjectival phrases, and (3) describe the syntactic function of adjektival phrases in the Special Report of Tempo Magazine, Sunday, December 25, 2022, entitled “Dari Utara Membela Kaum Hawa”. The research approach used is a qualitative descriptive and syntactic approach. The method of collecting data is through the listening method with advanced techniques, free engagement-free viewing, and note-taking techniques. Meanwhile, the data analysis method used is the Direct Element Division method with advanced techniques in the form of dissipation techniques, expansion techniques, and reverse techniques. The results of data analysis are presented through an informal presentation method. The results showed that 35 data of adjective phrases were divided into 17 endocentric adjective phrases and 18 exocentric adjective phrases. The types of adjective phrases found based on the number of cores consist of (1) attributive endocentric adjective phrases and (2) coordinative endocentric adjective phrases. The categories of filler words in adjective phrases are divided into (1) verbs, (2) adverbs, (3) nouns, and (4) pronouns. The adjective phrases found occupy several syntactic functions, namely (1) subject, (2) predicate, (3) object, (4) complement, and (5) adverb.

This research aims to determine the meaning behind the cover of the 11-17 November 2019 issue of Tempo magazine with the main title "Anies' Budget Disgrace", which includes a caricature of one of the national figures, so as not to cause wild opinions and noise in the community. This research uses a qualitative approach method that produces descriptive data, with primary data obtained from the documentation of Tempo magazine and secondary data obtained from relevant literature and journals. The collected data is then analysed using Charles Sanders Pierce's semiotics with its trichotomous concept. The results of this study show that Tempo magazine has fulfilled its function of social control and is directly involved in monitoring issues of public interest. The caricature of Anies, depicted by Tempo as trapped in DKI Jakarta's budgeting system, is depicted as falling into a can of glue. The can is a packet of Aica-Aibon glue, which is believed to be one of the budget items with a fantastic purchase value.Keywords: controversy, cover magazine; semiotics; tempo

KEBERAGAMAN KONTEN BERITA PANDEMI DI INDONESIA: ANALISIS ISI BERITA COVID-19 PADA MAJALAH TEMPO

This study shows how Tempo Magazine practices content diversity in reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. The role of the media in handling the pandemic is not only limited to massive reporting but must report all aspects of life affected by the pandemic as information to the public. The concept of diversity in news content is the main study in this research. This concept examines two things: 1) Diversity of news sources, to determine the diversity of news sources (social actors). 2) Diversity of topics (points of view) to find out how widely the media provides understanding to media audiences regarding the issue of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using qualitative content analysis, and processing by coding with QDA Miner to summarize news frames regarding the COVID-19 pandemic news in Majalah Tempo from April to November 2021. The results of this research show that news about the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia in Tempo Magazine is presented from various sources. point of view or angle, news source, and spread across various rubrics. This study found that Majalah Tempo’s reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic was presented in various ways, both in terms of news sources, the point of view of discussing a problem, and the distribution of news presentation rubrics. Research notes that Inforial (paid rubric) is included in the rubric that contains a lot of COVID-19 news in Tempo Magazine with a percentage of 11.68%, apart from that the government is the largest news source with a percentage of 40.33%.

The Meaning of Tempo Magazine Cover in Semiotics by Charles Sanders Peirce

In the September 16-22, 2019, edition of Tempo, the magazine cover was shown painting a picture of President Joko Widodo’s face with his long nose like a Pinocchio wooden doll. One year later, Tempo republished the magazine cover by displaying a picture of the same figure, namely Pinocchio. But this time in the background of the DPR plenary session on the 11-25 October 2020 edition. This study examines the sign's meaning, the repetition factor in the sign, and the attractiveness of the Tempo magazine cover. The qualitative research method used in this research is the semiotic approach of Charles Sanders Peirce. This research produces a representation of meaning on the two covers, a form of people’s disappointment in public officials for the discrepancy between their words and actions. The factor of repetition of the “Pinocchio” sign that occurs on both covers based on data and facts is found repeatedly. The attractiveness of the Tempo magazine cover includes characteristics, point of view, and target audience, and this attraction results in a business strategy for Tempo magazine.

This is based on the total duration, frequency, and tendency of the object of the news to Jokowi. Jokowi's image, which was initially positive, especially during the 2014 presidential election campaign, immediately changed after Jokowi became president in the news of Tempo Magazine. This was proven by Tempo Magazine supporting Jokowi during the 2014 presidential election because it was based on his ideology that Prabowo Subianto was a human rights criminal. In the 5-11 August 2013 edition of Tempo Magazine, they gave the title “Suddenly Jokowi” with a picture of Jokowi singing in pause. This tendency is a form of the failure of Tempo Magazine to become a balanced media. Tempo magazine chose issues, used angles, and published 11 out of 20 total Main Reports using the glittering generalities propaganda technique. Discourse between Criminalization and Marginalization (Teks Analysis)

This study aims to determine the Criminalization Discourse in the News Text "Tiran Tiran dari Tanah Wadas", as the object of research published in Tempo magazine edition of 28 February-6 March 2022. The research approach is qualitative using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis study. The subjects analyzed are criminalization and marginalization contained in the text. The research data was obtained through literature study, observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and online data searching. The results showed that the criminalization discourse in the news text "Pelawan Tiran Dari Tanah Wadas" contained three stages according to the critical discourse analysis according to Norman Fairclough: The text includes representation, relations, and identity, where the siege of hundreds of TNI and Polri officers with criminalization and repressive actions is an effort the government to accelerate the mining plan by coercion and overriding the rights of the Wadas villagers to maintain their living space. Discourse Practice which focuses on the production and consumption of texts, Tempo as a press institution has a social control role, in this case trying to raise the voice and rights of Wadas citizens through their writings, to help criticize the policies of the Indonesian government. The conclusion of this study shows that the practice of criminalization and marginalization occurs in the field, acts arbitrarily, and overrides the right to life and the consent of the residents of Wadas Village to defend Wadas land. Along with that, the researchers found the ideology behind the news, namely the existence of a populist ideology.

A construção da identidade moçambicana colonial e pós-colonial através de projetos de escolarização: desde 1930 até 1990

Abstract Identity building through primary schooling projects in colonial (1930-1974) and postcolonial (1975-1990) Mozambique is at the center of debate of this text, which has as its problem the fact that admission, schooling and, completion and dropout in both periods have been below expectations, which poses the challenge of identifying the factors and mechanisms of this trend and reflections to understand this phenomenon. The goal is to understand schooling in the face of antagonistic educational projects: on the one hand, the colonial, through which the colonial political and administrative machine intended to civilize, dominate and exploit the natives; on the other, the post-independence Mozambican educational project through which it was intended to form the “new man”. In methodological terms, the literature review, the analysis of the legislation, statistics and content of Tempo Magazine were the basis of this text. The main findings highlight: first, that political and economic factors, both in the colonial as well as in the postcolonial period, undermined efforts to universalize education; second, that both projects intended to educate Mozambicans according to their objectives and principles, with the libertarian mindset prevailing over that of domination and alienation.

Analisis Semiotika Charles Sanders Pierce pada Karikatur Cover Majalah Tempo Edisi 16-22 September 2019

This research aims to identify the representamen or sign, object, and interpretant on Tempo magazine cover of the 16-22 September 2019 edition. Tempo magazine carries political elements, and it is interesting to analyze. The caricature of the Indonesian President is used as the primary discussion to seek the messages that are being delivered. The magazine cover conveys meanings. This study uses qualitative research by using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis. The study focuses on signs which are divided into three categories: representamen, object, and interpretant. The finding shows that the caricature implies that the President of Indonesia betrayed himself and the citizens. His promise to make the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stronger was only an empty promise. The controversial icon of Pinocchio is associated with the Indonesian president because of the revision of Law No. 30 2002 that weakens KPK.
