Benchmarking animal handling outcomes on cow-calf operations and identifying associated factors.
  • Jul 1, 2022
  • Translational animal science
  • Elaine Calaba + 5 more

The assessment of animal handling is commonly included in cattle care programs. The guidelines set in the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Beef Checkoff funded Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program are often used for assessing handling on feedlot, stocker, and cow-calf operations. There is limited information about animal handling on cow-calf operations. Thus, the objectives of this study were to: (1) quantify handling outcomes on cow-calf operations and compare them to national BQA program thresholds, and (2) investigate factors associated with handling outcomes. Researchers visited 76 operations across the United States to observe the following outcomes, adapted from the BQA program, during the processing of cows or yearling heifers: Prod Use, Miscatch, Vocalization, Jump, Slip/Stumble, Fall and Run. One hundred cows or less (depending on herd size) were observed moving through a restraint system at each operation. Other information specific to the animal type, facilities, and management were also gathered to be explored as potential predictors of handling outcomes. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics on an operation basis and analyzed with multi-predictor ANOVA or Kruskal–Wallis tests to assess the relationship between outcomes and possible explanatory factors. Predictors included in the final analyses were: BQA certification (BQA), animal temperament (TEMP), region (REGION), chute style (CHUTE), and visual contact with humans (VISUAL). The 76 operations were sampled in 24 states (Central, n = 17; East, 30; West, 29), with herd sizes ranging from 10 animals to more than 5,000 animals. A total of 4,804 animals were observed. There were a substantial number of operations exceeding BQA thresholds for Prod Use (34.0%, 26), Miscatch (46.0%, 35), and Fall (31.6%, 24); the averages of these outcomes also exceeded the BQA thresholds (< 10%, 0%, and 2%, respectively). There was an association between Prod Use and several explanatory factors, including SIZE (P = 0.072), TEMP (P = 0.001), VISUAL (P = 0.027), and BQA (P = 0.104). Miscatch, Vocalization, and Fall all had single associated factors (REGION, P = 0.019; REGION, P = 0.002; VISUAL, P = 0.002, respectively). The VISUAL and TEMP factors had an association with the majority of outcomes. The findings suggest an opportunity for improving handling outcomes, which could be achieved through education and training support regarding the importance of animal handling on-farm. Future work should consider additional aspects of facilities and management that could impact cattle handling outcomes.

Genome-Wide Genomic and Functional Association Study for Workability and Calving Traits in Holstein Cattle
  • Apr 27, 2022
  • Animals : an Open Access Journal from MDPI
  • Michalina Jakimowicz + 6 more

Simple SummaryTraits related to the calving abilities and workability of cows are essential both for the dairy economy and for the welfare of cows. We analysed the direct and maternal components of calving ease, direct and maternal components of stillbirth, milking speed, and temperament by looking for SNPs, gene ontologies, and metabolic pathways significantly associated with the additive genetic variability of those traits. At the genetic level, 150 significant SNPs were identified whereas at the functional level we found 45 significant gene ontology terms and 5 metabolic pathways. The goal of our study was to identify the SNPs, metabolic pathways (KEGG), and gene ontology (GO) terms significantly associated with calving and workability traits in dairy cattle. We analysed direct (DCE) and maternal (MCE) calving ease, direct (DSB) and maternal (MSB) stillbirth, milking speed (MSP), and temperament (TEM) based on a Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle population consisting of 35,203 individuals. The number of animals, depending on the trait, ranged from 22,301 bulls for TEM to 30,603 for DCE. We estimated the SNP effects (based on 46,216 polymorphisms from Illumina BovineSNP50 BeadChip Version 2) using a multi-SNP mixed model. The SNP positions were mapped to genes and the GO terms/KEGG pathways of the corresponding genes were assigned. The estimation of the GO term/KEGG pathway effects was based on a mixed model using the SNP effects as dependent variables. The number of significant SNPs comprised 59 for DCE, 25 for DSB and MSP, 17 for MCE and MSB, and 7 for TEM. Significant KEGG pathways were found for MSB (2), TEM (2), and MSP (1) and 11 GO terms were significant for MSP, 10 for DCE, 8 for DSB and TEM, 5 for MCE, and 3 for MSB. From the perspective of a better understanding of the genomic background of the phenotypes, traits with low heritabilities suggest that the focus should be moved from single genes to the metabolic pathways or gene ontologies significant for the phenotype.

A Comparison on Psychological Variables in Alcoholics and Non Alcoholics
  • Dec 1, 2020

  • Amandeep Singh + 1 more

Hostility is a complex phenomenon that involves cognitive, behavioral and affective dimensions. Studies on the relationship between temperament as well as hostility and negative effects of alcohol intake found rigid alcohol patterns. Hostility is positively correlated with negative consequences of drinking. Since an external orientation seems to be connected with the induces of maladjustment, one might expect that alcoholics and heavy drinkers will be externally oriented, however many others contradicted this study and said that alcoholics are internally oriented. In our study, two groups of alcoholics and non alcoholics have been taken. The study has been conducted on males only. The age range includes subjects of 18-27 years. The fathers and sons are studied and have been further divided into four groups where either or both the fathers and sons are alcoholics. An analysis was conducted to study differences in alcoholics and non alcoholics on the variables of hostility and locus of control. Results show that the non alcoholics are high on internal locus of control and powerful others. They are also having higher mean scores on covert hostility. Alcoholics are showing high mean scores on overt hostility Further on, four groups were analyzed on the variables with the help of ANOVA by finding out the within and between group differences. Turkey’s Post Hoc is applied to find where the differences lie. Main effects and interaction effects were summarized with the help of factorial design. Significant mean differences were found mostly between group I(alcoholic sons with alcoholic fathers) and group IV (non alcoholic sons having non alcoholic fathers) on the variables of overt and covert hostility, internal locus of control and powerful others.

Hz. Peygamber’e Atılan Çirkin Bir İftira: Hz. Peygamber Zeyneb bint Cahş Evliliğinin Hz. Dâvûd Bat-Şeba Evliliğine Benzetilmesi
  • Jun 15, 2020

  • Recep Erkocaaslan

Dâvûd’a isnad edilen bu olay Hz. Peygamber’in de Hz. Dâvûd’a isnad edilen olayın, Zeyd b. Dâvûd’a haber verir. Hz. Peygamber’in aracılığıyla gerçekleştiği görülmektedir. Hz. Hz. Zeyneb de Hz. Peygamber’i kapıda bekletmemek için üzerindeki elbiseler çok da uygun olmamasına rağmen hızla kapıyı açarak Zeyd’in evde olmadığını belirtip Hz. Peygamber’i içeri davet etmiştir. Hz. Peygamber, Hz. Zeyneb’in bu halini görünce kafasını hemen çevirerek Hz. Zeyneb’i beğendiği için: “Yüce Allah’ı tenzih ederim. Kalpleri çeviren Allah’ı tenzih ederim.” sözlerini mırıldanarak söylemiştir. Bir müddet sonra Zeyd eve gelip Hz. Peygamber’in söylediği şeyleri haber alınca derhal Rasûlullah’ın yanına giderek: “Ey Allah’ın Rasûlü! Anam babam sana feda olsun. Zeyneb hoşuna gittiyse, onu senin için boşayayım.” demiştir. Hz. Zeyneb’in evliliğinin çabuk bitmesinde Hz. Zeyneb’in sert bir mizaca sahip olmasının büyük payı vardı. Üstelik Hz. Zeyneb bu evliliği istememesine rağmen hakkında inen âyet sebebiyle Hz. Peygamber’in emrine karşı gelememişti. Zeyneb’i Rasûlullah’a şikâyet ediyor, ancak Hz. Peygamber Zeyd’e hep aynı tavsiyede bulunarak: “Eşini yanında tut, bırakma!” buyuruyordu. Zeyd, Hz. Peygamber’in kendisini sürekli men etmesine rağmen bir gün dayanamayarak Hz. Zeyneb’i boşadı. Zeyd b. Hârise’nin Hz. Zeyneb’i boşamasından sonra el-Ahzâb sûresi 37. âyeti nâzil oldu. Böylelikle Hz. Peygamber ve Hz. Zeyneb’in evlilikleri ilahî bir irade neticesinde gerçekleşmiş oldu.Ayrıca son dönemlerde bazı kişiler tarafından Hz. Peygamber’in de Hz. Zeyneb’in eski kocası Zeyd b. Hz. Peygamber’in Zeyd’i komutan olarak görevlendirdiği dokuz seriyyenin tarihlerine baktığımızda ilk seriyyenin 3/624 tarihinde gerçekleştiği diğerlerinin ise 6/627 tarihi ve sonrasında gerçekleştiği görülmektedir. Dolayısıyla Zeyd’in komutan olarak görev yaptığı dokuz seriyyeden en az sekiz tanesi Hz. Peygamber ile Hz. Zeyneb’in evliliklerinden sonra gerçekleşmiştir. Dolayısıyla bu bilgiler ışığında Zeyd’in komutan olarak görevlendirilmesinin hiçbir surette Hz. Dâvûd’a isnad edilen rivayetlerdeki duruma benzemediği ortadadır.

Background: Temperament is a very important aspect of functioning that needs to be understood in children of patients suffering from schizophrenia. The children of parents with mental disorder have substantially increased risk of psychiatric illness in them and may exhibit a range of problems from minor variations in temperament and adjustment to manifest psychiatric disorder. Method: A case control study was conducted to study the temperament characteristics and psychopathology in children of patients suffering from schizophrenia as compared to those of healthy controls. Both the groups were evaluated on Temperament Measurement Schedule and Childhood Psychopathology Measurement Schedule. Results: The results showed that children of patients suffering from schizophrenia were withdrawing, less adaptable, less sociable and had lower activity level than children of healthy parents. However, on the measure of psychopathology, no significant difference was found. Conclusion: Temperament variation in children of patients suffering with schizophrenia was found in this study could be due to genetic predisposition. Thus, both genetic and environmental factors determine the psychological adjustment of the children. Keywords: Temperament, Schizophrenia, Children, Psychopathology

Weatherlessness: Affect, Mood, Temperament, the Death of the Will, and Politics
  • Apr 19, 2020
  • disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory
  • John J Stuhr

First, I develop an account of the nature of moods and the relation of mood to emotion and temperament. This account stresses that social and individual moods are marked by four features: They are transactional - neither wholly subjective nor objective; in experience they shade into and blur back and forth with feeling and temperament; they are ambient and atmospheric, a habit of living ·in the world more expansive than a habit of mind; and, whether conscious or not, moods have causes that, if known, may be manipulated to advance both personal and political ends. Second, I focus on a particular mood that, following the novelist John Barth, I term "weatherlessness." I then distinguish weatherlessness from both learned helplessness and manufactured consent. Third, I conclude by showing ways in which weatherlessness is fatal to democracy, to government of, by, and for the people. Here I suggest ways in which weatherlessness can be a tool used by authoritarian regimes, including those that disguise themselves as democracies.

Dream in Persian medicine perspective: A narrative review
  • Mar 30, 2020
  • International Journal of Dream Research
  • Majid Nimrouzi + 2 more

Sleep and dream are the inseparable parts of the human life, so their disturbance can affect the individuals’ quality of life. Sages of Persian medicine (PM) had valued dream as a part of history taking and physical examination for diagnosis of the diseases. Recently, psychologists and psychotherapists have focused on several aspects of dream. The aim of this review study was to explain the overviews of the sages of PM about dream and its aspects. The main sources of PM including The Canon of Medicine, Kholase Al-Hekmat, Firdous al-Hikmah, Mofareh Al-Gholub, Sharhe aghsaraei and also the NOOR software was reviewed by these keywords: “khab”, “roya”, “navm”, and “azqâth-e-ahlâm”. In addition, electronic data bases including PubMed Central, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched. Finally, the gathered information was presented. According to PM, the potential functionality of dream contents can be exploited to shed light on the temperamental diagnosis, and there are modalities whereby dream interpretation can be useful in diagnosis. PM considers the clues from one’s sleep/wakefulness ratio to discern one’s temperament: where abundance of wakeful hours indicates hotness and/or dryness of temperament, too much sleep signals an indication of coldness and/or wetness of temperament. Such discerning of temperaments itself acts as a suitable prelude to proper diagnosis. In conclusion, PM sages had recommended that the individuals’ dreams depend on their temperament. In this regard, it is suggested that experimental and clinical studies on dream should be designed with integration of conventional medicine and PM.

Objective To explore the influence of different mental status (evaluated by Likert scale) on the first success rate, image artifacts and examination time of cone beam CT (CBCT) in infants and young children. Methods Prospective analysis of children aged 1-6 years (98 cases) who underwent CBCT examination, before the examination, the children were scored in seven aspects: activity, adaptability, attention, mood, gender, age and parents′ attitude, and the total score was calculated, The total score was used as the test variable, and the success rate of the first examination, the artifact of the image and whether the examination time was longer than 2 minutes were used as the state variable. Using SPSS 16.0 to draw the ROC curve, the area under curve (AUC), significance, maximum Yoden′s index and their corresponding diagnostic (evaluation) critical values were obtained. Results The success rate of the first examination was 78.6%(77/98), the AUC was 0.949 ± 0.025, the significance P < 0.05, the maximum Yoden′s index was 0.766, the corresponding critical value of diagnosis (evaluation) was 15; the artifact-free rate was 67.3%(66/98), the AUC was 0.873±0.038, the significance P < 0.05, the maximum Yoden′s index was 0.549, and the corresponding critical value of diagnosis (evaluation) was 15; the proportion of examination time in 2 minutes was 80.6%(79/98), the AUC was 0.854 ± 0.039, the significant P < 0.05, the maximum Yoden′s index was 0.614, and the corresponding critical value of diagnosis (evaluation) was 14. Conclusions The Likert scale scoring method based on Thomas′s temperament analysis theory has certain application value in the psychological evaluation of children before cone-beam CT examination. For children whose total score is greater than or equal to 14, sedation or psychological counseling should be carried out before examination in order to effectively improve the success rate of examination and reduce the occurrence rate of artifacts in images, further more to reduce radiation dosage and increase the examination circulation of CBCT in children. The absence of formal markets and the large variability of genetic groups and production systems of goats and sheep in developing countries hinder the implementation of traditional breeding programmes. Community-based breeding programmes (CBBP) for these species have been shown to be effective in these countries. In these programmes, the definition of the objectives and criteria of selection is done in a participatory way, which takes into account the desires and needs of the local farmers. We aimed to define the objectives and criteria of a CBBP for goats and sheep in the Inhamuns region, Ceará, Brazil, using a participatory rural appraisal (PRA). This methodology, which consist in an approach that aims to incorporate the knowledge and opinions of rural people in the planning and management of development projects and programmes, was performed in seven districts of two towns of the region (Tauá and Parambu). One hundred twenty-two farmer families participated in the survey. The PRA was able to provide important information, and its results showed that breeders of this region keep flocks of goats and sheep for social, economic and cultural benefits. In order of importance, the main objectives for goat farming were personal fulfilment (PERF), food source for family (FSF), income generation (INCG), savings (SAV) and cultural/family traditions (CULT), while for sheep farming were CULT, FSF, SAV, PERF and INCG. Disease resistance (RDI), adaptability (ADP), fertility (FERT), growth rate (GRA), host resistance of worms (HRW), body conformation (BC), temperament (TEM), longevity (LONG), body size (BSIZ), age at first kidding (AFK) and milk yield (MIY) were the main selection criteria that farmers use for goats. The most important selection criteria used for selecting sheep were ADP, RDI, HRW, GRA, FERT, LONG, BC, BS and age at first lambing. According to these objectives and criteria, the CBBP must consider the adaptation of the animals to the climate and management conditions of the region, the resistance to diseases and productive performance.
