Challenges Of Transition Towards Entrepreneurial University

AbstractThere are several key external challenges to be mastered in the transition from the traditional university towards entrepreneurial university which are transformed into internal challenges. Unlike the business schools the management structures and environment of an university of technology may be often very cautious about implementation of the entrepreneurial elements in the technology and science study and research programmes. Often they have to be confronted by the requirements of students and businesses for more entrepreneurship education and skills in the university graduate profiles to accept this. This paper examines fundamental challenges of implementation of the concept of entrepreneurial university in two European universities of technology with direct central public funding which gradually covers less and less its future development needs. The current status of transformation towards an entrepreneurial university at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava compared to the University of Technology Ilmenau is described, analyzed and the next steps put forward.

The Measurement of Pressures on the Cube Model in VZLU in Prague and BLWT Bratislava

This paper deals with experimental measurement of pressures on the cube made in the wind tunnel of Aerospace Research and Test Establishment (VZLU) in Prague Letnany and calibrating the wind tunnel of Faculty of Civil Engineering in the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. The basis for the construction of the cube model in 1:30 scale was the cube in-situ with dimensions of 6 m in Great Britain in town called Silsoe. It describes the scope and application in practice.

Fuel additives production: ethyl-t-butyl ether, a case study

Abstract The students frequenting the program Chemical Engineering at the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava are taught to be able to combine and develop their knowledge acquired in the area of chemical, energetic, environmental, and safety engineering. Prior to completing their study, they are obliged to develop a report regarding engineering, economic, and safety analysis of important chemical technology. This paper presents the most valuable outputs of the student’s Technology project aimed on simulation and optimization of the fuel additives production technology. 2-Ethoxy-2-methylpropane (ethyl-t-butyl ether, ETBE) production based on liquid-phase etherification of 2-methylpropene with ethanol in the presence of heterogeneous catalyst was studied. Different patented technologies were investigated in terms of their profitability and safeness. The first technology was an isothermal reactor with the product separation via distillation (Kochar & Marcell, 1981). The next ETBE production design assumed was a modification of the previous one; the product separation was carried out using liquid-phase extraction (Pucci et al., 1992). The last design considered in this study was a reactive distillation column with a pre-reactor (Bakshi et al., 1992). In all three technologies, etherification reaction was carried out using Amberlyst ion-exchange resin in its H+ form as the catalyst. Selected ETBE production designs were simulated using Aspen+ program. Their profitability was compared on basis of the investment and operation costs assessment taking into account both the produced ETBE yield and purity. Further, basic safety analysis of all chosen technologies was performed in order to identify possible hazards. Finally, individual and social risk connected with the plant operation was computed. Taking into account these economic and safety criteria, the best alternative for ETBE production was the reactive distillation.

Nonlinear Control Systems E-learning Course Support

The paper presents the course on nonlinear control systems created in cooperation of the Institute of Control and Industrial Informatics of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava with the Institute PRT/MI, Fernuniversitat in Hagen. The differences in real experiments utilization in the course considering distance and regular education are discussed.

Sharing Control Laboratories by Remote Laboratory Management System WebLab-Deusto

In this paper the practical case of remote laboratory sharing is shown. Educational remote laboratories allow students to use real experimental systems in similar way as in traditional labs with additional given value by eliminating time and flexibility restrictions. Essential requested features for management of users, accesses, experiments and resource sharing are provided by remote laboratory management system (RLMS) WebLab-Deusto. Using the RLMS we were able to implement set of control educational remote laboratories into existing network of remote laboratories and provide them as shared resources across the different institution that collaborate on WebLab-Deusto RLMS. Educational laboratory processes like thermo-optical plant and two liquid tank systems have been deployed to WebLab-Deusto at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia (STU), and provided as shared resources to University of Deusto, Spain (UD). In the same way, several experimental laboratories focused on electronics and robotics were provided by UD to STU. This model, also called federation, offers possibilities for educational institutions to extend their laboratory base by experiments aimed on related fields of science.

Theoretical and Experimental Studies on Composite Steel – Concrete Columns

This paper presents some results of theoretical and experimental analysis of composite steel-concrete (SC) columns, which are completely or partially concrete-encased steel members. In practice, most composite SC columns are relatively slender. In design the second - order effects will usually need to be included. The main topic of the paper is a theoretical analysis of the second - order theory at composite (SC) columns.According to the results of the experiments, which were made in the Department of Concrete Structures and Bridges, Slovak Technical University of Technology in Bratislava (total of 18 columns were tested in two series), the effects of the second - order theory were analyzed. The experimental results were compared with theoretical from the model developed in the non-linear software Atena 3D.The evaluation of the results is also shown in comparison with the general design method according to Eurocode 4, Design of composite steel and concrete structures - Part 1.1: General rules and rules for buildings (EN 1994-1-1).

Influence of the Mixing Grid Position on the Coolant Flow at the Outflow Part of the Nuclear Reactor Fuel Assembly Physical Model and Validation of CFD Model

In the year 2007 an experimental device with a physical model of the VVER 440 nuclear reactor fuel assembly was installed in the laboratory of The Institute of Power Engineering of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. Within the framework of the reconstruction a third measuring plane was added to the original two, new combined probes were designed with temperature resistant sensors instead of the thermocouples, and piezoelectric pressure sensors for each probe were used. In this article we investigate the influence the mixing grid positioning has on smoothing the temperature profile in the fuel assembly outlet. The preliminary results of the ongoing validation of CFD simulations by means of experimental data are presented.

Determination of physical, mechanical and burning characteristics of polymeric waste material briquettes

In this paper the study of recycling technology for production of refuse derived fuel (RDF) is described. Various types of wastes (wood, carton, paper, plastic and textile) were pro- cessed by two-shaft and single-shaft shredders to obtain the output product (1-2 mm), which is suitable for briquetting process. For samples manufacturing the briquetting equipment developed at Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava was used. Technological test showed that by briquetting of the municipal waste higher pressing temperature and compacting pressure should be applied. For quality evaluation of the manufactured briquettes the density and strength properties were determined. The mechanical strength of briquettes from RDF increased after mixing it with wood and paper wastes. The influence of different parameters (fraction size, moisture content, compacting pressure and temperature) to briquette quality was studied. To determine the calorific value of the briquetting stock the tests in the chemical laboratory of the Department of Thermal Engineering of TUT were performed.

The status of MedAustron

This paper describes the status of the design study of the Austrian Ion Therapy and Cancer-Research Centre Project MedAustron. This work was performed during the last two years by the MedAustron study group. The team was spread out over several research institutes and University clinics, with full-time members at the Medical University of Vienna, Innsbruck Medical University and Fotec, Wiener Neustadt in collaboration with the Medical University Graz, the Hospital of Wiener Neustadt, the Vienna University of Technology and the research institutes CERN, PSI, the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava and the Jozef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana. The study group has also worked in cooperation with GSI, Darmstadt and the CNAO foundation, Milan. The agreed aim of this study was to investigate a conceptual design of an accelerator facility which provides optimum treatment conditions for high-precision active beam scanning of cancer tumours with both proton and carbon ions.

Effect of the thermomechanical treatment on the structure of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V

This paper deals with the actual problem connected with preparing of titanium alloy well known as Ti64. We are solving physical–metallurgical process of the preparing Ti64 alloy with good useful properties namely with very good notch toughness and tensile strength in our laboratory on the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. Aim of our research task was obtain a very good biocompatible material. The research material was prepared through the plasma metallurgy, vacuum metallurgy, HIP produces in hot camera and heat treatment. Through the using phase analysis and microanalysis were established some very hard particles, of which chemical substances are titanium carbonitrides.

A Vessel for the Complex Supplying and Wastes Collection of Inland Ships on the Danube

Safe and reliable outgoing/filling of fuels and collection of sewage is important for continuous navigation and environmental protection. The supply vessel on the base of DEIIb barge was designed and built up for these purposes. The investor is the Division Port of Slovak Navigation and Ports Comp. and the builder is H.A.W.K. Comp. in Bratislava. The design and construction are made by the Department of Cars, Ships and Engines, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. This contribution demonstrates the project and general arrangement of this vessel.

Anton Andrejko received his PhD in the field of Software engineering from Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava in February 2009. His thesis was supervised by Prof. Mária Bieliková. He has worked in the area of user modeling and personalization.
