Enhancing HIV Cognitive Abilities and Self-Management Through Information Technology-Assisted Interventions: Scoping Review.

HIV/AIDS remains a significant global challenge, and with the rapid advancement of technology, there has been an increasing number of interventions aimed at improving HIV/AIDS cognition and self-management behaviors among patients. However, there is still a lack of detailed literature integrating relevant evidence. This study aims to comprehensively review existing research on interventions using modern information methods to improve HIV/AIDS cognition and enhance self-management behaviors among patients. It systematically reports the theoretical frameworks and specific intervention strategies used in current research, providing a comprehensive overview of the development status of relevant studies. We aim to compile existing evidence through this scoping review to identify potential avenues for future research. We followed the scoping review framework proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute for the synthesis and reporting of evidence. Relevant literature was searched using electronic databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library. The time frame for inclusion was from 2018 to December 1, 2023. Inclusion criteria were (1) interventions using modern information technology or new digital media, (2) studies focusing on improving HIV awareness or self-management behaviors among people living with HIV, (3) intervention studies or evaluations of intervention effects, and (4) studies published within the last five years. Two reviewers (HH and MX) independently assessed each study at both the title and abstract screening stage and the full-text review stage, resolving any disagreements through discussion. A total of 55 studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. The Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model, Social Cognitive Theory, Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Information Systems Research Framework are among the most commonly used theoretical frameworks. Modern information technology interventions are mainly constructed using smartphone apps, SMS text messaging, internet-based platforms, audiovisual materials, and digital health education platforms, with smartphone apps and SMS text messaging being the most widely used intervention media. Modern information technology is becoming an important tool for health interventions among people living with HIV/AIDS. However, future research should focus on integrating theoretical framework guidance with intervention design, further exploring the diversity of intervention implementations, the applicability of different technological methods, their long-term effects, and how to more effectively combine traditional intervention strategies to maximize intervention outcomes.

Advancing Neuropsychological Rehabilitation in Primary Progressive Aphasia Based on Principles of Cognitive Neuroscience: A Scoping Review and Systematic Analysis of the Data.

Background/Objectives: This systematic review of neuropsychological rehabilitation strategies for primary progressive aphasia will consider recent developments in cognitive neuroscience, especially neuroimaging techniques such as EEG and fMRI, to outline how these tools might be integrated into clinical practice to maximize treatment outcomes. Methods: A systematic search of peer-reviewed literature from the last decade was performed following the PRISMA guidelines across multiple databases. A total of 63 studies were included, guided by predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, with a focus on cognitive and language rehabilitation in PPA, interventions guided by neuroimaging, and mechanisms of neuroplasticity. Results: Integration of neuroimaging techniques contributes to the increase in the efficacy of interventions with critical information about the neural mechanisms underlying language deficits in the aphasias. Traditional rehabilitation strategies, technology-assisted interventions, and non-invasive brain stimulation techniques hold considerable promise for language improvement. Neuroimaging was also found to be necessary in subtype-specific differentiation toward tailoring therapeutic intervention. Evidence also shows that directed and sustained interventions using neuroplasticity can have long-term effects in managing the symptoms of PPA. Conclusions: The present review underlines the necessity of including cognitive neuroscience techniques within neuropsychological rehabilitation to enhance therapeutic outcomes in PPA. In addition, neuroimaging modalities such as EEG and fMRI are also of great importance in understanding the underlying neurobiology of language disturbances and guiding tailored interventions. Long-term benefits of these approaches should be evaluated, including their applicability in routine clinical practice.

Evidence-Base Update of Psychosocial and Combination Treatments for Child and Adolescent Depression

ABSTRACT Objective This evidence-based update (EBU) builds on three previous reviews (1998, 2008, 2017) sponsored by the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology with the aim of evaluating the empirical support for psychosocial interventions for depression in youth. Method In the current review period (2014–2022), 25 randomized controlled trials (RCT) were identified: four in children and 21 in adolescents. Descriptive effect sizes and number-needed-to-treat (NNT) ratios were calculated for primary outcomes. Results were integrated with prior reviews, and cumulative evidence used to classify treatments as well-established, probably efficacious, possibly efficacious, or experimental. Published secondary analyses of predictors, moderators, and mediators were examined. Results For adolescents, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-A), CBT in combination with antidepressant medication, and collaborative care programs were all classified as well-established. The evidence was considerably weaker for children, with no treatments achieving well-established or probably efficacious status. New developments include greater exploration of parent- and family-mediated treatment models and increasing evidence on technology-assisted interventions. Data on predictors, moderators, and mediators continued to be focused on adolescent depression samples and drawn from a limited number of RCT datasets. Conclusion Since the prior EBU, there has been incremental progress in youth depression treatment research. There is an urgent need to: (a) develop innovative approaches to substantially improve on the modest effects seen in most RCTs, (b) expand the evidence base for children and other underserved groups, (c) craft evidence-based guidelines for choosing between interventions when multiple efficacious treatments do exist, and (d) address issues of treatment effectiveness and scalability to ameliorate the wide prevalence and high impact of depression in youth.

Exploring the Effectiveness of Technology-Assisted Interventions for Promoting Independence in Elderly Patients: A Systematic Review.

The aging global population presents significant challenges for healthcare systems. Technology-assisted interventions have emerged as promising tools to enhance independence and well-being among elderly individuals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of technology-assisted interventions in promoting independence among elderly patients and identify key barriers and facilitators to their implementation. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Searches were performed in PubMed, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Cochrane Library, and Scopus. Studies evaluating technology-assisted interventions for promoting independence in elderly patients were included. Data were synthesized through narrative and thematic analysis. Fourteen studies met inclusion criteria. Technology-assisted interventions demonstrated positive impacts on physical and cognitive functioning, health management, quality of life, and technological engagement among elderly patients. Improvements were observed in areas such as mobility, chronic disease management, mental health, and daily living activities. High usability and adherence rates were reported for well-designed interventions. However, challenges in user-centered design, personalization, and integration with existing healthcare systems were identified. Technology-assisted interventions show promise in promoting independence among elderly patients. Future research should focus on addressing identified challenges and conducting larger, long-term studies to confirm effectiveness and sustainability.

The effects of neighborhood perceptions on response to a technology-assisted parenting intervention for adolescent substance use: protocol of a diversity supplement to parent SMART (Substance Misuse in Adolescents in Residential Treatment)

BackgroundIt is well established that an adolescent’s neighborhood is associated with their likelihood of developing a substance use disorder. The availability of drugs, lack of access to resources, and exposure to violence are all associated with greater substance use among young people, leading to more pronounced health inequities. Technology assisted interventions (TAIs) have been touted to enhance the reach of substance use treatment and improve outcomes for high-need families living in underserved neighborhoods. A key question is whether neighborhood characteristics impact the effectiveness of TAIs, given these interventions are embedded within an adolescent’s natural environment. This National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded Diversity Supplement will examine the role of perceived neighborhood characteristics on response to Parent SMART, a TAI for parents of adolescents in residential substance use treatment (R37DA052918; PI: Becker). Aim 1 will use both adolescent and parent self-report of multiple neighborhood dimensions (e.g., physical environment, social disorder, satisfaction with community resources) to identify indicators predictive of treatment response. Aim 2 will then explore the indirect relationship between neighborhood context and response to Parent SMART, via engagement.MethodsParticipants include adolescent and parent dyads enrolled in an effectiveness trial evaluating Parent SMART, a TAI for parents of adolescents in residential substance youth treatment. Participants will complete self-report measures of neighborhood physical environment, social disorder, and satisfaction with community resources at baseline to predict parenting and youth substance outcomes at 6-, 12-, and 24-weeks post discharge.DiscussionTo date, few studies have explicitly tested how neighborhood affects response to TAIs for adolescent substance use. Assessing adolescent and parent perceptions of neighborhood characteristics holds potential to pinpoint key contextual factors that affect TAI response and to promote consideration of multi-level health equity determinants in substance use research. Understanding neighborhood influences can advance public health by helping tailor TAIs to address the unique needs of adolescents living in underserved communities.Trial registrationThis study extends the measurement and analysis plan of a pragmatic effectiveness trial. Enhancing flow states in neurodivergent individuals through cognitive network integration

This article explores the concept of “flow” in the context of neurodivergence, focusing on the interaction between the default mode network (DMN) and task-positive networks (TPNs), particularly in conditions such as autism spectrum condition (ASC) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Flow, a state of deep immersion and focused engagement, is associated with enhanced performance and satisfaction across activities. The DMN, typically active during rest and self-referential thinking, interacts uniquely with TPNs during flow states, creating a dynamic balance crucial for sustained focus and reduced self-referential thinking. Neurodivergent individuals often exhibit distinct DMN activity patterns, which affect their capacity for achieving flow. For instance, individuals with ADHD may experience flow in stimulating tasks, whereas those with ASC may achieve it in areas of deep interest due to their intense focus. This paper examines the expertise-and-release model in creative flow and transient hypofrontality as a potential mechanism facilitating flow in neurodivergent individuals. It also proposes strategies to enhance flow through personalized cognitive training, specialized task environments, and technology-assisted interventions, aiming to harness neurodivergent strengths and accommodate unique cognitive profiles. This comprehensive analysis deepens understanding of neurodiversity and offers practical applications for improving quality of life and performance in neurodivergent populations.

Kaleidoscope: Detecting the Tone of the Room

We aimed to develop a software tool that can determine the “tone of a room” in virtual meetings. Our prototype, Kaleidoscope, uses preexisting machine learning and deep learning libraries to analyze the expressed emotions from individuals in an online meeting, and turn that data into an overall analysis of group tone through novel analytic tools. Results from human participants, asked to identify emotions observed from online meeting videos, are used to validate and refine the prototype. The Kaleidoscope prototype currently achieves an overall accuracy greater than 70%, more than double that of human-to-human agreement; and demonstrates the unique capability of identifying the group tone of a meeting. Future extensions could provide facilitators real-time emotion tracking and group tone assessment, paving the way for technology-assisted interventions to combat group polarization and other problematic group dynamics.

Innovative Nursing Care for Patients with Psychological Disorders: A Comprehensive Review on Iranian Versus Global Nursing Interventions

Psychological disorders (PDs) are one of the most important global challenges that affect a large number of individuals regardless of geographical location. In Iran, similar to other parts of the world, the prevalence of PDs is increasing and requires innovative nursing care (NC) interventions. The present study aims to comprehensively assess the current NC practices for patients with PDs, as well as compare traditional and innovative approaches between Iran and global healthcare systems. Traditional NC practices in Iran emphasize a holistic and culturally sensitive approach, which integrates traditional NCs with evidence-based therapies; however, global practices often focus on evidence-based and cognitive-behavioral therapies. Innovative NC approaches, e.g., technology-assisted interventions and personal care programs, play a fundamental role in improving treatment outcomes and quality of life for patients with PDs. Also, Iranian nurses are integrating complementary therapies with evidence-based practices to provide comprehensive and personalized care for patients. On a global scale, there is an increasing emphasis on collaborative care models and cutting-edge technologies to enhance the availability and effectiveness of care. Previous evidence indicated the roles of technology-based interventions, concentration techniques, and personal care programs in improving Iranian patient outcomes. While there are challenges such as limited resources, cultural stigma, and lack of specialties both in Iran and around the world, preventive efforts to address these barriers can facilitate the widespread adoption of innovative national NCs. Future research directions include remote psychiatry, integration of complementary therapies with traditional NCs, and providing interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance patient-centered care for individuals with PDs. Hence, by promoting knowledge exchange and collaboration among healthcare professionals, organizations can create a supportive environment for implementing and maintaining innovative NCs that are ultimately able to provide comprehensive mental health care for individuals around the world.

Project Vayoraksha: Implementation of novel mHealth technology for healthcare delivery during COVID-19 in geriatric population of Kerala.

Background & objectives mHealth technologies, with their potential in improving public health, have recently gained considerable interest in India, offering an opportunity to deliver tailored and low cost interventions to the selected populations, especially in resource-poor settings. Project Vayoraksha aimed at developing and pilot testing mHealth technology-assisted strategies (Vayoraksha mobile application and field Vayoraksha network) to improve healthcare delivery and reverse quarantine at the field level among the geriatric population. Methods This field operational research study was implemented in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, from October 2020 to July 2021. The Vayoraksha mobile phone application for the geriatric users and a web interface used by healthcare workers involved in the field Vayoraksha network was developed with multisectoral expertise. Vayoraksha had facilities for symptom surveillance, teleconsultation and assessment of needs and included a community-based system to monitor and meet their needs that can help in reverse quarantine of the geriatric population. Results The project was implemented using the field Vayoraksha campaign involving frontline health workers and community volunteers. A baseline survey of 4782 geriatric population in the study area was conducted in Phase I, and 2383 (49.8%) had access to a smartphone facility to use Vayoraksha. Of these, 1257 (52.7%) were covered under the 'field Vayoraksha campaign' using intersectoral coordination and community participation. A total of 750 (59.6%) geriatric individuals downloaded the application of whom, 452 (60.3%) used the services of Vayoraksha. Needs were registered by 56 (12.3%) individuals of which 46 (82.1%) were medical needs related to the management of chronic diseases. More than 70 per cent of the needs were met through the Vayoraksha field network under the local primary health centre. More than 80 per cent of the geriatric individuals reported symptoms related to COVID-19 during the intervention period. Compliance with quarantine was observed in 77.7 per cent of the geriatric populations. Among those who used Vayoraksha, 26 (5.7%) availed tele-counselling services, and 3 (0.6%) used teleconsultation facilities. It was observed that Vayoraksha users had a higher proportion of the geriatric population who were young, educated, having chronic morbidity and living with family. Regular symptom surveillance was done within this group; only 12 (2.6%) of them tested positive for COVID-19 during this study. Interpretation & conclusions Results of this pilot study are promising, with 60 per cent of the geriatric population downloading and using Vayoraksha within a short time. Technology-assisted interventions can supplement the existing system for improved healthcare delivery among the vulnerable groups and have good potential for scale-up in the near future in developing countries.

Feasibility and acceptability of measuring prenatal stress in daily life using smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment and wearable physiological monitors.

High levels of stress during pregnancy can have lasting effects on maternal and offspring health, which disproportionately impacts families facing financial strain, systemic racism, and other forms of social oppression. Developing ways to monitor daily life stress during pregnancy is important for reducing stress-related health disparities. We evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of using mobile health (mHealth) technology (i.e., wearable biosensors, smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment) to measure prenatal stress in daily life. Fifty pregnant women (67% receiving public assistance; 70% Black, 6% Multiracial, 24% White) completed 10 days of ambulatory assessment, in which they answered smartphone-based surveys six times a day and wore a chest-band device (movisens EcgMove4) to monitor their heart rate, heart rate variability, and activity level. Feasibility and acceptability were evaluated using behavioral meta-data and participant feedback. Findings supported the feasibility and acceptability of mHealth methods: Participants answered approximately 75% of the surveys per day and wore the device for approximately 10hours per day. Perceived burden was low. Notably, participants with higher reported stressors and financial strain reported lower burden associated with the protocol than participants with fewer life stressors, highlighting the feasibility of mHealth technology for monitoring prenatal stress among pregnant populations living with higher levels of contextual stressors. Findings support the use of mHealth technology to measure prenatal stress in real-world, daily life settings, which shows promise for informing scalable, technology-assisted interventions that may help to reduce health disparities by enabling more accessible and comprehensive care during pregnancy.

Influence of Technology-Assisted Reading Interventions for Improving Reading Skills in English Language Learners

This qualitative study investigates the influence of technology-assisted reading interventions on English Language Learners (ELLs) by examining the perspectives of seven participants and conducting classroom observations and document analysis. Employing a constructivist learning theory and the Technology Acceptance Model as the theoretical framework, the research explores how interactive, personalized, and multimodal learning experiences impact reading skills development. The methodology includes thematic analysis of interviews, observations, and lesson plans, revealing enhanced engagement, improved comprehension, effective vocabulary development, increased fluency, and facilitated peer collaboration as significant results. The study identifies challenges such as technical issues and accessibility, emphasizing the importance of equitable access to technology. The implications for educators and policymakers highlight the need for effective integration of technology-assisted interventions in reading instruction and support for ELLs to optimize learning outcomes.

Description of self-care behaviours in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation on oral anticoagulant therapy: a scoping review.

The primary aim of this scoping review was to explore and categorize the medication-related self-care behaviours exhibited by patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) who are on oral anticoagulant (OAC) therapy. A scoping review was performed, and the systematic search of the literature yielded an initial 887 records. After deduplication and screening, 61 studies were included in the analysis, ranging from 2003 to 2023. The studies represented a wide geographical distribution and diverse methodologies. The results identified 16 self-care behaviours: a higher focus of the included literature on self-care monitoring (60.65% of studies), followed by self-care management and self-care maintenance (each 16.39%). These behaviours ranged from regular blood testing to consulting healthcare providers and lifestyle changes. The results also highlighted the relationship between treatment satisfaction, self-efficacy, and adherence. Several studies emphasized the critical role of healthcare providers in influencing medication adherence. Furthermore, patient knowledge, quality of life, and psychological factors were identified as key elements affecting self-care behaviours. The review provides a comprehensive landscape of medication-related self-care behaviours among NVAF patients on OAC therapy. It underscores the predominance of self-care monitoring behaviours and the critical roles of healthcare providers, psychological factors, and patient knowledge in influencing these behaviours. The findings also highlight the necessity for an integrated, patient-centred approach to improving self-care and self-management in OAC treatment. Future research should focus on addressing the identified gaps, including the relative lack of studies on lifestyle modification, emotional well-being, and technology-assisted interventions. The use of technology to address loneliness and social isolation among older adults: the role of social care providers

BackgroundAddressing loneliness and social isolation among older adults remains a public health priority. The restrictions enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic simultaneously heightened the need for services to overcome social isolation and reduce loneliness among older adults, while also limiting social care providers’ ability to deliver these. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of social care providers in using technology to address loneliness and social isolation among older adults during the pandemic.MethodsThis was a mixed methods study involving an online survey and interviews with providers of older adult social care in Wales, UK. Invitations to participate were sent to commissioners and providers of adult social care services, including those working in the voluntary and community sectors, across all local authorities in Wales. Data was collected between September 2021 and January 2022.ResultsSixty-one service providers completed the survey, 19 of whom also took part in an interview. Addressing loneliness and isolation among older adults was reported as a key concern by nearly all survey respondents. While telephone calls were the most common means of facilitating social interaction, many service providers also tried to support older adults to make more use of devices that they already had (e.g., smartphones to hold video calls). Where funding was available, organisations purchased devices, such as tablets and smart speakers, for older adults. Analysis of interviews resulted in three themes: (1) The potential and limitations of technology; (2) Individuals’ capabilities, confidence, motivations and values; and (3) The wider system.ConclusionsTechnology was employed in a variety of ways during the pandemic to address loneliness and social isolation among older adults; many service providers continue to use technology in a hybrid system of care now that pandemic-related social restrictions have been lifted. Our findings emphasise a need for technology-assisted interventions to be designed and deployed in alignment with service users’ values, motivations and capabilities. Further, there is a need to better support service providers to assess loneliness and social isolation among older adults, and to acknowledge the important role providers play in helping older adults to adopt technology-assisted interventions.

A pilot of couple HOPES within the U.S. Veterans Affairs Healthcare System: PTSD and relationship outcomes in veteran couples.

Conjoint interventions for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) offer an opportunity to target symptoms' broader social impact, including couples' relationship satisfaction. Technology-assisted interventions may help overcome access to care barriers for couples. Couple Helping Overcome PTSD and Enhance Satisfaction (HOPES) is a coached internet-based couples' intervention for PTSD adapted from cognitive behavioral conjoint therapy, an evidence-based dyadic therapy for PTSD. This pilot study examined the implementation feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of Couple HOPES in a sample of 15 United States veterans with PTSD and their romantic partners within a Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center setting. There were significant improvements in veterans' PTSD symptoms (self- and partner-reported) and both veterans' and partners' relationship satisfaction, though the effect sizes were small (all g's < .40). Importantly, the 73% retention rate and participant feedback at postassessment suggest this online adaptation may help couples overcome barriers to accessing care. More broadly, this pilot study helps answer questions regarding where digital health interventions fit into the continuum of PTSD care within the VA system. Kalikhasang Balaan: Elements of a Youth Specific Ecotheology in the Philippines

Scientific consensus points to human activity as the primary cause of global warming triggering climate change. Mitigations include technology-assisted interventions and education of human agents, such as changing the human mindset and behavior, to avoid impending, irreversible environmental damage, among others. Among the competent sectors, religious communities can boost formative human interventions through religious ideas. The present study content analyzes the conceptual elements of “Kalikhasang Balaan” as a youth-specific ecotheological view drawn from a unidimensional Filipino measure on Christian Environmentalism. Our analysis is deductive in approach, drawing theological aspects of a peculiar youth ecotheology driven by the notion of “Kalikhasang Balaan”, framed within creation theology and Christian stewardship driven by environmental ethics. We discuss the unique attributes of this Filipino notion in the light of local Philippine church and government responses to understand how the youth ecotheological voice may correspond to institutional views.

Effectiveness of interactive technology-assisted interventions on promoting healthy food choices: a scoping review and meta-analysis.

Making healthy food choices is crucial for health promotion and disease prevention. While there are an increasing number of technology-assisted interventions to promote healthy food choices, the underlying mechanism by which consumption behaviours and weight status change remains unclear. Our scoping review and meta-analysis of seventeen studies represents 3988 individuals with mean ages ranging from 19·2 to 54·2 years and mean BMI ranging from 24·5 kg/m2 to 35·6 kg/m2. Six main outcomes were identified namely weight, total calories, vegetables, fruits, healthy food, and fats and other food groups including sugar-sweetened beverages, saturated fats, snacks, wholegrains, Na, proteins, fibre, cholesterol, dairy products, carbohydrates, and takeout meals. Technology-assisted interventions were effective for weight loss (g = -0·29; 95 % CI -0·54, -0·04; I2 = 65·7 %, t = -2·83, P = 0·03) but not for promoting healthy food choices. This highlights the complexity in creating effective interactive technology-assisted interventions and understanding its mechanisms of influence and change. We also identified that there needs to be greater application of theory to inform the development of technology-assisted interventions in this area as new and improved interventions are being developed.

Information and digital technology-assisted interventions to improve intercultural competence: A meta-analytical review

This study synthesized 56 studies published during year 2000–2021 that measured the use of technology to develop students' intercultural competence (IC). Meta-analysis, a statistical process that combines the quantitative findings of multiple relevant studies, was used to analyze the effectiveness of the interventions to improve IC. The findings suggested that technology-based interventions generally produced a positive and intermediate effect (with an effect size of .35) on the students’ overall and subdimensions of IC. Subsequent publication bias analyses and sensitivity analyses revealed that our findings were not affected. Based on the high heterogeneity between the reviewed studies, the types of intervention and IC measurement tools were identified as moderating variables. Among the four intervention types, computer simulation had the largest effect size (0.40) and blended learning environment had the smallest effect size (0.22). The effect sizes of digital materials/tools and computer-mediated communication were 0.38 and 0.35, respectively. Compared to studies using self-developed scales (0.38) and previously validated scales (0.33), studies that employed self-developed tests to assess IC produced a larger effect size (0.66). The impact of the technology-based interventions at different levels of moderating variables was discussed. Implications of the findings were provided.

The use of technology-assisted interventions in dementia care contributes to increased communication, reduced burden on the caregivers, improved health outcomes, and improved expense management. Technology-assisted interventions can be provided remotely to monitor, improve, and enable home care, benefiting the health of both patients and caregivers. Despite increasing use, the effectiveness of technology-assisted interventions for dementia care remains uncertain, with studies reporting inconclusive findings subject to interpretation. Therefore, the current study investigated the available evidence to explore the efficacy of technology-assisted interventions for people with dementia. Systematic review and meta-analysis. The study was preregistered with the PROSPERO international prospective register of systematic reviews using a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)-guided protocol. The primary search was conducted in eight databases from database inception to January 29, 2022. Using a random-effects model, the standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were synthesized to obtain pooled effect sizes (using Stata 16.0). The updated Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool (RoB-2) was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies. A pooled analysis of 12 trials, including 584 people with dementia, showed more improvement associated with technology-assisted interventions compared with standard care, including in the domains of cognitive function (SMD=0.39; 95% CI: 0.14 to 0.64; p < 0.001) and depression (SMD=-0.75; 95% CI: -1.33 to -0.17; p=0.01). However, no significant effects were observed for activities of daily living (ADL) or quality of life. Technology-assisted interventions appear to improve cognitive function and reduce depression in people with dementia compared with standard care. This study may be used to demonstrate that interventions incorporating many modalities or technologies can be used to enhance dementia care, which may improve favorable outcomes when using technology-assisted interventions to remotely initiate appropriate activities for people with dementia. Because technology allows for simultaneous communication and access to shared multimedia, it removes environmental constraints and allows treatment to be administered remotely.
