YEREL YÖNETİMLERDE ÇOCUK VE GENÇLERE YÖNELİK REKREASYON PLANLAMASI ÜZERİNE BİR ARAŞTIRMA: KARAMAN ÖRNEĞİ

For the future of society, children and young people need to be guided correctly in order to spend better quality leisure time. It is thought that the local administrations providing services to the society will be more efficient in the planning and implementation stage in undertaking this process. This study was carried out in order to determine the priorities in the planning and delivery of recreational activities for children and young people in the local administrations in the province of Karaman. In the line of this purpose; study was restricted with Karaman Municipality, Karaman Youth and Sports Provincial Directorate, Karaman Provincial Health Directorate and Karaman Family and Social Policies Provincial Directorate and study was conducted with official authorities who would give opinions within the scope of purpose. The research is a qualitative study. Descriptive analysis approach is adopted within the framework of qualitative research design. In this study, which was handled with qualitative data collection techniques, semistructured interview technique was used and the questions prepared by the interviewer were directed to the participants verbally. After the thematic content coding, five themes were created such as importance of recreational activities, planning of recreational activities, use of facilities, participation rate in recreational activities and cooperation with institutions. As a result, it was found out from the participants' views that recreational activities will contribute positively to the physical and social development of children and adolescents and will be effective in preventing technology addiction which is one of the problems of today's age. It is also a finding that there are different opinions about the existence of a separate recreation planning for children and young people in local administrations. It is also a finding that not every institution has a facility for the presentation of recreational activities within the scope of local government, but the facilities of different institutions provide an alternative for the provision of of local goverments' recreational services. In addition, it was determined that the rate of to the participation of recreational services were evaluated such as sufficient and inadequate and all participants expressed a common opinion on the necessity of cooperation with different institutions.

Teknoloji Bağımlılığı ile Rekreasyonel Eğilimler Arasındaki İlişki: Üniversite Öğrencileri Üzerinde Bir İnceleme

In this research, the relationship between recreational activity participation and technology addiction within the scope of social media and gaming activities and their effects on daily life is examined. This study analyzes data collected from 462 students from 103 different departments of 43 universities in Turkey. Universities in Ankara constitutes the majority of dataset. Survey is used as the data gathering method. The results indicate a negative correlation between the activities of reading book, cooking for fun, decorating with flowers, handicrafts, dancing, attending fairsfestivals and theatre, museum visits, yoga and game addiction according to the relationships between technology addiction and the dimensions of recreational activities. However, a positive relation is found between game addiction and the activities of table tennis, camping, skiing, paintball and soccer. A positive relation is also observed between amateur photography and social media addiction. Cultural activities seem to prevent game addiction. By considering the results, activity suggestions for overcoming technology addiction are also offered.

Smartphone and Facebook addictions share common risk and prognostic factors in a sample of undergraduate students.

To improve the comprehension of the interface between smartphone addiction (SA) and Facebook addiction (FA), we hypothesize that the occurrence of both technological addictions correlate, with higher levels of negative consequences. Moreover, we hypothesize that SA is associated with lower levels of social support satisfaction. We recruited a convenience sample of undergraduate students from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, with age ranging between 18 and 35 years. All subjects completed a self-fulfilled questionnaire comprising sociodemographic data, the Brazilian Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI-BR), the Bergen Scale for Facebook Addiction, the Barrat Impulsivity Scale 11 (BIS-11), the Social Support Satisfaction Scale (SSSS), and the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale (BSSS-8). After completing the questionnaire, the interviewer conducted a Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). In the univariate analysis, SA associated with female gender, with ages 18 to 25 years, FA, substance abuse disorders, major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, low scores in SSSS, high scores in BSSS-8, and high scores in BIS. The group with SA and FA presented a higher prevalence of substance abuse disorders, depression, and anxiety disorders when compared to the group with SA only. In our sample, co-occurrence of SA and FA correlated with higher levels of negative consequences and lower levels of social support satisfaction. These results strongly suggest that SA and FA share some elements of vulnerability. Further studies are warranted to clarify the directions of these associations.

Explaining the link between technostress and technology addiction for social networking sites: A study of distraction as a coping behavior

AbstractThis paper investigates under what conditions stress from the use of SNS is linked to addiction to the use of the same SNS. Integrating three theoretical strands—the concept of feature‐rich Information Technology (IT), the theory of technology frames, and distraction as a coping behaviour—we theorize two types of coping behaviours in response to stressors experienced from the use of SNS. These are ‐ distraction through use of the same SNS and distraction through activities outside the use of the SNS. We hypothesize relationships between stressors from SNS use, the two coping behaviours and SNS addiction. We further articulate the role of SNS use habit. We test the hypotheses through a three‐wave survey of 444 Facebook users with data collected at three different points in time. The paper's contributions are to theorize and empirically validate the psychological concept of distraction as a coping behaviour in response to stress from the use of SNS and, in doing so, explain why there may be a link between technostress from and technology addiction to the use of the same SNS.

The Use of Digital Technologies, Impulsivity and Psychopathological Symptoms in Adolescence.

Background and aims: Past research on the associations between psychopathological symptoms and technological-based addictions, i.e., Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and Social Media Addiction (SMA), showed contradictory results in adolescents and adult populations. The present study investigated correlations between adolescents’ psychopathological risks and impulsivity, IGD and SMA. Methods: A sample of 656 participants (338 males; Mage = 16.32 years) was divided into three age groups (early, mid-, and late adolescence) and completed a battery of scales comprising the (i) Internet Gaming Disorder Scale–Short Form, (ii) Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, (iii) Barratt Impulsiveness Scale for Adolescents, and (iv) Symptom Checklist-90-R. Results: The significance of the correlations was not corroborated in the basic tables. Significant associations appeared only in the adolescent subgroups, sometimes for bivariate and sometimes for partial correlations and with different patterns of associations between males and females. Moreover, both technological addictions were correlated with impulsiveness in bivariate and partial correlations. Discussion and conclusions: Following a developmentally-oriented approach to determine the patterns of associations between technological behavioral addictions and psychopathology in the specific sub-phases of early-, mid- and late-adolescence, this exploratory research showed how these associations might change depending on the developmental phase and gender of the individual. Future research is needed to provide empirical evidence of specific emotional–psychopathological correlations.

The Foundations of Technology Addiction

Technology is considered to be a joy and convenience to global masses of all ages, but there is a point where the use of too much technology becomes destructive. The fundamental problem that the public should reflect upon is that technology addiction is affecting all current generations, and not simply the youth alone. Although the younger demographic of today’s society is a large contributing factor for technology addiction, the level of addiction should be viewed on a much wider scale.

A Systematic Synthesis of Evidence Regarding Relationship of Physical Activity and Sports Participation With Trait Self-control

Background: Individuals with low level of trait self-control exhibit several negative behaviors such as violence, addictive behaviors (drug addiction, technological addictions), suicide, unhealthy eating, and criminal behaviors. In contrast, high level of self-control thought to be associated with positive psychosocial and physical health related outcomes. Interventions contribute to boost self-control seems essential for individual with risk of low trait self-control.
 Objectives: The purpose of this study is to systematically evaluate the relationship between physical activity and trait self-control.
 Methods: For this purpose, full-text articles were searched in research databases including Psych INFO, PubMed, Medline, The Cochrane Library, Wiley Library, Taylor & Francis, Science Direct, Springer, ERIC, JSTOR, Google scholar, and Sage Journals. Following screening for the study selection criteria and assessment of risk of bias, twenty one studies (13cross-sectional, 5 longitudinal and 3 interventions) with low or moderate risks of bias were finally selected for qualitative synthesis.
 Results: Findings from all of the included studies consistently showed that there was a significantly positive relationship between physical activity and trait self-control.It is suggested that increasing self-efficacy, decreasing aggression, and improvement in positive and negative emotional states might be underlying mechanisms working for beneficial effects of physical activity on trait self-control.
 Conclusion: These suggest that physical activity and exercise may serve as a potential means to enhance trait self-control. Practical implementation and recommendations for policy makers are put forward in this connection.

Exploring the Loneliness and Internet Addiction Level of College Students Based on Demographic Variables

The aim of this study is to examine the loneliness and Internet addiction levels of college students in terms of demographic variables and to determine the variables that predict their Internet addiction level. Data were collected from college students studying at a public university in Turkey. The UCLA Loneliness Scale Version3 and Internet Addiction Test (IAT) were used as the data collection tools. College students were delivered an online survey and at the end 489 college students were voluntarily participated in the study. This survey study employed independent sample t-tests, ANOVA tests, correlation and multiple regression tests for data analysis. The results show that younger participants felt significantly more loneliness than older participants; similarly, students in lower classes felt more alone than those in upper classes. In terms of addiction, it is seen that the frequent use of computers, smartphones and social media increases the Internet addiction level of students. The study suggests a significant correlation between loneliness, Internet addiction, age, and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Additionally, loneliness and CGPA significantly predict Internet addiction. This study may be important in terms of determining the psychological variables affecting today's increasing technology addiction (internet, smart phone, etc.). Thus, determining the effect of the level of loneliness of young people on internet addiction may be effective in terms of preventing this addiction.

A Comparative Study on Social Media Addiction of High School and University Students

Considering that social media addiction is probably the most recent type of technology addiction, the present study was designed based on the six components suggested by Griffiths (2013). Toward the main purpose of the study, the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale was adapted to social media addiction and translated into Turkish. After the validation process, it was administered to a total of 700 students; of them 397 were high school students and 303 were university students. The data collection instrument included 18 five-point Likert-type items in six categories, along with 5 structured items regarding demographics of the respondents. In addition to the original findings of the present study, similar research on social media addiction in some other countries were examined for comparisons. The results showed that both university students and high school students have a moderate level of addiction to social media. Being a university or high school student does not make any difference on the level of social media addiction. However, significant differences were found regarding gender, duration of use, department at the university, and type of high school. Finally, the results of the study show certain similarities and a few differences with the results of the studies conducted in other countries.

Role of social anxiety on high engagement and addictive behavior in the context of social networking sites

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to tackle the problem of technology addiction by investigating the differences between the antecedences of addictive (problematic technology usage) and high-engagement behavior (non-problematic technology usage). The case of social networking site usage (SNS, e.g. Facebook, Instagram or Twitter) is taken as the case out of the reason of prevalent user population.Design/methodology/approachIt is revealed that people tend to use SNS not only for building a relationship, but also for communicating. In other words, there are inner needs of adopting the SNS technology. However, no clear definitions can be followed for determining the problematic SNS usage, addictive behavior and the high-engagement behavior. Therefore, this study adopts the notion of uses and gratification theory (U&G theory) for investigating the SNS usage behavior. Also, the social anxiety is also first introduced to integrate into the research for an empirical study.FindingsResults reveal that gratification sought and relationship maintenance are associated with the addictive behavior, whereas the relationship maintenance is significantly related to high-engagement behavior.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, the selected data represents a sample of SNW users in the Asian Pacific region and mainly from the group of young college users. Therefore, caution must be taken when generalizing the findings to other SNW users or groups. Second, the time aspect related to social media dependence may need to be considered in future studies. Third, the authors found marginal support for the influence of intentions of high engagement¸ and future studies may consider applying other theories that could better explain these types of behavior.Practical implicationsThe results of this study provide strong evidence that inner anxiety perceived by users should not be neglected while tackling the problematic internet use due to SNW addiction because it can strengthen the force for depending on SNW for seeking social support. Apart from the value of perceived enjoyment as asserted in previous studies, this study opens up a new opportunity to tackle SNW dependence.Social implicationsThe key implication of this research is that the impact of the mental health of users on SNW problematic should not be overlooked . The higher the level of anxiety perceived, the more likely is the SNW dependence. Therefore, the online behavior depending on psychological health should be addressed because it may be a critical point for assisting users to adopt SNW wisely.Originality/valueThis study confirms that social anxiety people experience in real (offline) life has impacts on online behavior of SNS usage (online). It suggests that the difference between users as the perceived level of social anxiety can trigger different levels of SNS usage. Second, U&G theory is proven valid in understanding SNS addiction. Third, relationship maintenance through the use of SNS reveals its dissimilar effects on SNS addiction and high engagement.

Modelling Digital Technology Addiction for Individual Over-Indebtedness

Technology had become an essential part of our daily routine, which we cannot live without. It becomes a useful communications tools where people communicate with each other’s in many ways via digital technology. However, the developments in the digital software had caused to the new types of behavioural addiction to arise, such as digital game addiction and Facebook addiction. Moreover, the overuse of the digital technology had a trigger to the situations of fear of missing out (FAMO), where the individual will be trying hard to be at par as his/her social norms. Although previous studies have stated that the over-use and dependency of digital technology effects on individual consumption, however, there is no study has considered the impact of digital technology towards over-indebtedness. With regards to this limitation, thus this study tries to formulate a conceptual model for digital technology addiction and individual overindebtedness in filling a research gap in the related field.

Psychological diagnostic of risk factors for involving adolescents in the use of narcotic substances: the development of a methodical complex. Part 2. Criterion validity and analysis of profles

Te second part of the paper presents the results of testing the criterion validity of the methodological complex scales conducted on a sample of 637 pupils of the upper grades of general education schools from 12 constituent entities of the Russian Federation and 108 pupils involved in the use of narcotic substances. Pupils using narcotic substances are characterized by a tendency to technological addictions, antisocial tendencies, difculties in self-regulation accompanied by overestimation of the own ability to control emotions, denying the interest for novelty, risky behavior and avoidance as well as difculties in child-parent relations. Some of these factors are manifested in those with a protective response strategy and others — in those with an open demonstration of difculties, which allows us to separate the two risk profles. In pupils appraising their ability to control emotions as high, the risk of involvement in the use of narcotic substances is associated with either a demonstrating or an illusory excessively «prosperous» profle: an overestimation of own emotional control and social support, denial of avoidance, denial of interest for novelty and risky behavior. In pupils appraising their ability to control emotions as low, the risk is higher in those with higher rates of technological addictions, antisocial tendencies, difculties in self-regulation and in child-parent relationships.

Epidemiology of technology addiction among school students in rural India.

Penetration of mobile technology is rapidly rising. Excessive use leads to Technology addiction, which often start early in adolescence. The purpose of the present study was to assess Technology addiction and its correlates among school students in rural India. This cross sectional study was conducted among 885 school students in north India. Four schools were selected and participants aged 13-18 years, were enrolled randomly. A self-designed 45 item questionnaire was used to evaluate dependence syndrome (intense desire, impaired control, tolerance, withdrawal, persistence despite harm, neglect of alternate pleasure) as used for substance dependence in ICD-10. Screening for depression and anxiety was done by using patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9) and generalized anxiety disorder scale (GAD-7) respectively. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were done. The mean age of the study participants was 15.1 years. Among the participants, 30.3% (95% Confidence Interval = 27.2%-33.3%) met the dependence criteria. One-third (33%) of the students stated that their grades had gone down due to gadget use. Technology addiction was more among male students (odds ratio = 2.82, 95% CI = 1.43, 5.59), those having a personal mobile phone (2.98, (1.52-5.83), use smart phone (2.77, 1.46-5.26), use one additional gadget (2.12, 1.14-3.94) and those who were depressed (3.64, 2.04-6.49). Increased mobile phone access in rural India is leading to technology addiction among school students. Certain demographic and gadget specific factors predict addiction. The technology addiction possibly contributes to poor academic performance and depression. This warrants studies on a larger scale, with interventions for judicious use of gadgets.

Effect of technology addiction on academic success and fatigue among Turkish university students

ABSTRACT Background: Technology addiction can cause certain physical, mental, and social health problems. Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the effect of technology addiction levels on academic success and fatigue in university students in Turkey. Methods: 743 students continuing their undergraduate education at a single university participated in this descriptive correlational study. Data was collected using a Student Identification Form, The Problematic Mobile Phone Use Scale, the Internet Addiction Scale, and the Piper Fatigue Scale. Results: 9.8% of the students exhibited internet addiction risk, while internet addiction was detected in 0.7%. Compared to students showing no addiction symptoms, students who scored in the internet addicts’ category were found to have lower academic success averages and higher fatigue levels. It was found that smart phone addiction of students alone explained 5.8% of the total variance in fatigue levels while the internet addiction of students alone explained 6.8% of the total variance in fatigue levels. Conclusion: Although internet addiction was relatively low in this study, academic success was negatively affected in students categorized as internet addicted and fatigue increased alongside technology addiction, suggesting that internet addiction may be a predictor of fatigue. Educational initiatives could help to raise awareness on the negative relationship between technology addiction and academic success and its effects on physical and psychological health.

Studying the effect of happiness levels on technology addiction of students who have been studying at universities of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

Objective: The study aimed to analyze the effect of happiness on technology addiction with different variables among students who have been studying at different universities of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Methods: This research was descriptive one and the sample consisted of 360 participants of which were 191 women, 169 were men. The data were collected by socio-demographic information form, Technological Dependence Scale and Oxford Happiness Scale Short Form. In this research, Shapiro Wilks, t-test, Anova and correlation analyzes were performed. Results: The results showed that students who were female had significantly higher scores on techno-logy addiction than male students. In addition, students who were in romantic relationships had significantly less technology addiction than students who were single. The technology addiction scores of students who can limit their usage of technology with their own will had significantly lower scores on technology addiction than students who cannot limit their technology usage. Discussion: As hypothesized, there was a significant negative correlation between happiness and technology addiction.

The Social Media and Technology Addiction and Its Associated Factors among University Students in Lebanon Using the Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale (MTUAS)

The contemporary developments of Information and Communication Technologies usage have fueled a popular concern. The young people are experiencing technology addiction behavior due to excessive media and technology usage. A valid instrument is required to detect individuals at high risk of social media and technology addiction. Objective: The objectives of this study are to assess prevalence of the technology addiction using the Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale (MTUAS) and to investigate the impacts of online social networking on health and academic performance of young university students in Lebanon. Methods: During the academic year 2017-2018, a cross-sectional study which enrolled 705 young university students was conducted. Data was collected using MTUAS questionnaire. The translation and cultural adaptation of the MTUAS followed a standardized protocol. The psychometric properties were then evaluated. We used multivariate regression analyses to determine which characteristics were associated with the technology addiction among students. Results: 705 filled out the questionnaire aged 17 to 35 years (mean = 20.42; SD = 2.41), 74% of whom were females. The internal consistency was high for all subscales and ranged from 0.54 - 0.87. The MTUAS yielded statistically significant scores for subgroups (known group validity). Males’ students had a higher risk of addiction to social media and technology than females. The use of media was viewed common among the smokers (OR = 1.76; 95% CI = 1.10 - 2.82, p = 0.02) and drinkers of alcohol (OR = 1.80; 95% CI = 1.04 - 3.11, p = 0.04). Students that used e-mailing, smartphone, and TV viewing had a high academic performance level. Females and public university students had negative attitudes toward technology. In conclusion: The technology becomes a big problem on the universities students’ users that has an impact on their life and affects their academic performance. The MTUAS Arabic version has been evaluated as a valid and reliable instrument.

Sport and physical education as prevention against technological addictions

There is no question that technologies have revolutionized the way with which our world operates and consequently the individuals’ life styles. On the other hand, nowadays, technological addiction is an educational problem underestimated yet given its pervasiveness and diffusion among teenagers. Learning and cognition processes are influenced by the environmental experience, as technology has created a new environmental space to experience among digital natives. The purpose of this article is to examine some positive and negative effects of technology on teenagers’ life styles. From a methodological point of view, a systematic review of the existing literature will be provided following the PRISMA guidelines both on technological addictions, examining the negative effects on adolescent mental health, and on educational strategies, on the other hand, aimed at promoting positive effects through analysis of the relationships between technology and learning processes. By comparing empirical studies and international experiences, it can be suggested that education plays a key role in preventing behavioural addictions and promoting physical and mental well-being, given that technology could represent a precursor of positive and stable attitudes towards healthy habits and learning processes.

Mujer y juego online. Propuesta de tratamiento de un caso de adicción a videobingo

Desde la legalización del juego online en España el trastorno de juego se ha incrementado notablemente, ya que ha aumentado la disponibilidad y accesibilidad de un tipo de juego que es, de por sí, más adictivo que el tradicional. Aunque las tasas de prevalencia son superiores en hombres que en mujeres, ellas no son ajenas a este problema, que también suele concurrir con otros problemas de índole emocional. El trabajo que presentamos es un estudio de caso de una mujer procedente de los servicios de salud mental, que padecía, además de adicción al juego, una importante sintomatología clínica. Se describe el protocolo de tratamiento de adicción al juego online desarrollado en la Unidad de Investigación: “Juego y adicciones tecnológicas” de la Universidad de Valencia, que recoge las aportaciones de diversas investigaciones científicas. El tratamiento conductual cognitivo que le fue aplicado no solamente tuvo eficacia en la reducción del juego, sino que produjo un radical cambio en estilo de vida, actitudes hacia el juego y sintomatología clínica

Technology Addiction in Children

Uncontrolled and inappropriate use of technology (mobile phones, tablets and PC) among pre-school children is harmfulto their physical and mental development. The use of technology at this age should not be limited to 30 minutesper day. Anything over that timecan cause addiction. Even during this interval, the use of inappropriate content i.e., games, social networks may not encourage deepanalytical thinking; instead, it makes a ‘flow water heater’ from a brain causingthe reception of a huge amount of information that cannot be processed or stimulated by the brain to solve problems and develop synapses that are responsible for functional thinking. On the other hand, during that period, children experience a range of emotions such as sadness, anger, happiness, fear, love, surprise, disgust, and shame. These emotions cause an increasein serotonin levels, which functions as a form of morphine in children’s brain. It is much more effective for a child to engage in some form of motor activitiese.g., playing, climbing or crawling which successfully stimulates the formation of synapses in the child's brain. This new generation of children addictedto technology in schools creates problems. The aim of this paper is to outlinethis multifacated problem.

A SURVEY ABOUT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PERCEPTION OF POST-TRUTH ON SOCIAL MEDIA

The purpose of this paper is to survey university students’ perception of post – truth on social media. The post-truth, which has been selected as the ‘Word of the Year’ by Oxford World Dictionaries in 2016, is a new technological era today. This new era especially effects students who have a habit of access information via social media. This survey is aimed to illustrate how university students evaluate the fake news appeared on social media and to reveal solutions about the possible negative effects of this era. The method involved in this survey is data collection from students, who represent the majority of social media users, with 5 Likert type scale questionnaires. Data has been collected from two-year degree, undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral university students who continue their studies in public and foundation universities in Turkey. There is not an existed scale to evaluate perception of post truth on social media. The existed scales are related to evaluate the technology addiction in psychology field. A standard scale has not been used and it is not aimed to develop a scale in this study.
