Scaling carbon removal systems: deploying direct air capture amidst Canada’s low-carbon transition

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies, such as direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS), will be critical in limiting the rise of the average global temperature over the next century. Scaling up DACCS technologies requires the support of a complex array of policies and infrastructure across multiple overlapping policy areas, such as climate, energy, technology innovation and resource management. While the literature on DACCS and other CDR technologies acknowledges the path-dependent nature of policy development, it has tended to focus on abstract policy prescriptions that are not rooted in the specific political, social and physical (infrastructural) context of the implementing state. To address this gap, this paper provides a country-level study of the emerging DACCS policy regime in Canada. Drawing on the existing literature that identifies idealized (acontextual) policy objectives that support DACCS development and effective regulation, we identify the actionable policy objectives across six issue domains: general climate mitigation strategies; energy and resource constraints; carbon storage and transport regulation and infrastructure; financing scale-up and supporting innovation; removal and capture technology availability and regulation; and addressing social acceptability and public interest. Using a database of Canadian climate policies (n = 457), we identify policies within the Canadian (federal and provincial) policy environment that map to the idealized policy objectives within each of these domains. This exercise allows us to analyze how key policy objectives for DACCS development are represented within the Canadian system, and enables us to identify potential niches, and landscape influences within the system, as well as gaps and potential barriers to the system transition process. This paper contributes to our understanding of national DACCS policy development by providing a framework for identifying components of the DAC system and linking those components to desired policy outcomes and may provide a basis for future cross-country comparisons of national-level DACCS policy.

Evaluation index system of science and technology innovation think tank talents based on competency model

As China’s economy progresses towards high-quality development, the construction of science and technology think tanks, with talent construction as the key, has become an important supporting force and occupies a unique position in the national innovation system. In recent years, with the rapid expansion of the number of think tank talents, how to evaluate and manage think tank talents has become a key factor in the development of think tank influence and competitiveness. Based on the experience of talent team construction at home and abroad, Taking the typical science and technology innovation think tanks of Henan Province as an example, this paper analyzes the current situation and status quo of science and technology innovation think tank talents, and finds problems in the talents, Summarize the factors that affect the talent construction and development of science and technology innovation think tanks, From the perspective of six dimensions of competency model, four first-level indicators of talent quantity, talent quality, talent ability and talent contribution of science and technology innovation think tank and 16 subordinate second-level indicators are constructed for talent evaluation of think tank. Ahp is adopted to set questionnaires and collect data with Likert5-level scale, and yaahp software is used to verify the weight verification evaluation effect. Invite experts in the field to score the evaluation indicators. The research results show that the talent evaluation index of science and technology innovation think tank based on competency model pays more attention to the standardization, integration and systematization of the talent evaluation of the think tank, and the system is scientific and reasonable. It can provide reference and reference for promoting the construction, evaluation and development management of scientific and technological innovation think tanks.

Unveiling the relationships between visibility, information technologies and innovation management for sustainability performance: an empirical study

PurposeThe paper investigates how visibility, information technology and innovation management impact sustainability performance. It proposes a framework explaining the role of visibility in driving firms' sustainable performance and the relevance of innovation management and information technologies in enhancing organisational visibility. This study intends to add to the discussion within the management literature about the potential of innovation management to drive sustainability. It seeks to provide insight into the practices that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can adopt to improve their sustainable performance.Design/methodology/approachUsing empirical methods, the study investigates SMEs in central Mexico. The demographic information in the dataset includes 15 years as an average length of service from firms. Of the surveyed firms, 70% were from the manufacturing sector and 30% were from the service sector, as these are the most representative sectors of the productive region. A variance-based structural equation model approach was used to test the hypotheses, processed with the partial least squares (PLS) regression method.FindingsThe research results show that visibility significantly impacts sustainability performance. Innovation management has a higher influence on visibility than information technologies, emphasising the need to improve the quality of information in firms, not just the tools. The findings support managers in comprehending the crucial importance of visibility in aiding firms to achieve higher sustainability performance.Research limitations/implicationsThe study only examined a sample of Mexican SMEs; therefore, the findings' generalizability must be considered within this context. Secondly, the survey only focused on services and manufacturing firms and a more detailed analysis of the sector could provide further clarity on the relationships between variables. As a result, future research should consider these limitations and explore additional contexts to improve the overall understanding of the topic. Moreover, the scale used to measure the variables was adapted from other researchers with similar context research and reflective variables.Practical implicationsThe results provide helpful information for SME managers about the importance of focusing on innovation management processes and employing information technologies as crucial managerial strategies. This will aid in increasing visibility and supporting the development of sustainability performance in firms.Social implicationsThe world red-code, among others, with climate change and social gaps, has generated the need to contribute to sustainable development, and it has mobilised people on all levels all over the world for the simple purpose of preserving life. Therefore, society, as a crucial group that affects and is affected by this red-code situation, should act in favour of visibility, the use of high-quality information (e.g. transparent, accessible and relevant) and information technologies to promote sustainable practices. This could mean that society should be prepared to incorporate new capabilities and spaces to interchange knowledge as a participatory community that can contribute to better sustainable dynamics that could expand its participation in public decisions. Also, the government should encourage digital democracy (e.g. develop social participation platforms), opening and harmonising rules and mechanisms combining high-quality information with IT to provide flexible and adequate services that support sustainable development, such as efforts towards constructing sustainable and smart cities.Originality/valueThis study explores how innovation management can drive firms' sustainability performance, which is crucial for improving competitiveness. The question of how to enhance sustainability performance through managerial drivers is a critical one. This study empirically investigates the nexus of visibility and sustainability performance, innovation management and information technology with visibility.

Hospital Management Systems (HMS) represent a key advancement in healthcare technology designed to revolutionize operational efficiency, raise standards of patient care and ensure compliance with regulatory protocols. This paper explores the multifaceted functions of HMS, highlighting its role in automating administrative tasks, supporting real-time access to patient data, and facilitating seamless communication between healthcare professionals. Drawing on current research and practical implementations, we delve into the transformative potential of HMS, particularly in the context of recent innovations in telemedicine, data analytics, and remote monitoring systems. In our research, we present SIMRS, a robust hospital management information system developed using the waterfall method, strategically focused on the systematic improvement of hospital operations. By automating key processes such as patient registration, appointment scheduling, payment and inventory management, SIMRS optimizes hospital workflows and ultimately improves patient care delivery. In addition, we examine the empirical evidence that shows the significant impact of management systems and leadership traits on the quality of care in hospital settings, and highlight the indispensable role of effective leadership and management frameworks. Next, we discuss the technical foundations of HMS and highlight the integration of various programming languages and database management systems such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, and MongoDB. This cross-disciplinary approach underscores the synergy between technological innovation and healthcare management, paving the way for a more efficient patient- centered healthcare ecosystem. In summary, this research illuminates the transformative potential of HMS to revolutionize healthcare operations, improve patient outcomes and optimize resource allocation, advocating for its widespread adoption to shape the future of healthcare delivery. It is shown that management is not just one of the integral components of the joint activity of people, but also a determining condition for its successful implementation and ensuring the desired efficiency. It is known that the development of management ideology and technology usually lags behind production technologies. This applies to both local and global aspects of management. Therefore, today, in the conditions of an innovative type of social development, the development and systematic application of innovative management technologies becomes an important problem. Research and publications on the problems of determining innovative management vectors are analyzed. They are far from exhausting all its important aspects. It is about social, economic, organizational and psychological conditions and possibilities of ensuring both the innovative nature of the management itself and its compliance with the requirements of Industry 4.0. The meaning and features of innovative management and its implementation in the practice of managerial activity are also insufficiently disclosed. According to the results of a systematic study of a wide range of management problems and the analysis of literary sources on these problems, the goals of the article are to distinguish the meaning of the concepts of innovation, efficiency, and compliance of the content and nature of management with social requirements and expectations of its transition to level 4.0

Ecological modernization at construction industry enterprises as an innovative production and management technology

The article delves into the pivotal role of ecological modernization, specifically the environmentalization of production at enterprises in the building materials sector. A comprehensive study was conducted on the product range of Ivano-Frankivskcement PJSC, one of the largest enterprises in the Western region. This case study serves as a tangible example, demonstrating that the adoption of environmentally friendly production necessitates both the environmentalization of production processes and management. The implementation of a comprehensive environmentalization strategy involves the incorporation of ecologically oriented measures in both the internal and external environments of the production system, while the environmentalization of the management system entails a restructuring of organizational forms and management methods to align with ecological principles. It was established that an essential part of ecological modernization is the introduction of environmental management systems. This includes requirements for waste and its processing, control over the use of water resources, and implementation of environmental certification and standards. Ecological modernization at enterprises in the construction industry helps to reduce the sector's ecological impact on the environment, contributes to the preservation of natural resources, and improves people's quality of life. It is proposed that enterprises producing building materials switch to the use of a dry method of production - an innovative technology that will contribute to the reduction of morbidity in the population and will protect the natural environment from harmful impurities and combustion products. The main advantage of this is energy-saving and highly efficient cement production technologies. It is emphasized that when carrying out production activities, enterprises in the field of production of construction materials should also apply management technologies of controlling, outsourcing, foresight, etc., with the help of which adverse environmental and economic problems can be detected promptly, and suggestions for their elimination can be made. The relevance of this article is determined by the necessity to ensure the competitiveness of educational institutions in the educational services market. Modern challenges require educational institutions to continuously improve their activities. Successful development of an educational institution is possible only through the integration of innovations that stimulate the achievement of its goals and contribute to improving the quality of education for students. This aligns with the interests of Ukrainian society, which, like any other developed society, is interested in a high level of educational services. With the growth of the educational services market and increasing competition, it is important for leaders of educational institutions to focus on searching for and implementing innovative management technologies to secure significant competitive advantages. Thus, the current market conditions and the need for competitive struggle highlight the importance of innovations for leaders, with innovative management technologies becoming key to achieving the goals of the educational institution and enhancing the quality of education. Objective: To analyze the readiness of future leaders of educational institutions to implement and apply innovative management technologies to enhance the competitiveness of their organizations in the educational services market. Methods: Study of scientific sources, legislative and normative-legal documents, surveys and interviews, case studies, SWOT analysis, expert assessments, and modeling. Results: During the study, the readiness of future educational institution leaders to implement innovative management technologies was evaluated; key barriers and challenges faced by future leaders, including limited resources, fear of change, and an insufficient level of knowledge about innovative technologies, were identified. At the same time, positive aspects were also discovered, namely a high level of motivation for learning and improvement, and readiness to introduce innovations to enhance the quality of education and adapt to modern labor market requirements. A comprehensive set of measures to increase the readiness of future leaders for innovation was developed and substantiated. This includes professional development programs, mentorship, and the creation of innovative educational spaces for experimentation and practical application of new approaches. The role of strategic planning in the successful implementation of innovative management technologies was also determined, which involves clear formulation of the mission, vision of the educational institution, as well as the development of specific goals and tasks to achieve defined results. Conclusions: This article examined the readiness of future educational institution leaders to apply innovative management technologies, which is crucial for enhancing competitiveness and the quality of educational services provided. The main barriers and challenges leaders may face when implementing innovations were identified, and methods to overcome these challenges were proposed. Special attention was given to the importance of a systematic approach and strategic planning in the process of adapting and implementing new practices in management. Developed and substantiated recommendations for focusing on innovative management practices include: enhancing the qualifications of future leaders, developing openness to change, and stimulating creativity and innovative thinking. It was determined that the successful implementation of innovative management technologies depends on a comprehensive approach that takes into account the specifics of the educational institution, the readiness of the staff for changes, and the presence of the necessary material and technical base. The findings of the study make it clear that innovative management technologies play a decisive role in forming an effective management model in modern educational institutions. Their implementation not only improves the quality of educational services but also ensures the sustainable development of educational organizations, meeting the challenges of the contemporary dynamic educational environment.

Analysis of PT PLN's Innovative Strategy in Supporting Electric Vehicles in Indonesia

Global transformation towards sustainable mobility, the electric vehicle (EV) industry plays an important role in creating a cleaner and environmentally friendly future with the journey towards sustainable mobility, PT PLN (Persero) plays an important role in supporting the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia. With more than a thousand Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) operating by the end of 2023, PT PLN confirms its commitment to accelerate the transition to clean mobility. However, technical challenges, change management, and organizational culture are obstacles that must be overcome. This research method uses a qualitative approach to understand PT PLN's strategy in supporting the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia. PT PLN's strategy in supporting clean mobility includes infrastructure development, strategic partnerships, home charging installation initiatives, and the application of digital technology. Through holistic analysis, it highlights the importance of effective change management and an inclusive organizational culture. The results of this research provide insight into best practices in supporting the electric vehicle ecosystem and provide input for designing more effective policies. By continuing to strengthen infrastructure, develop partnerships, empower communities, technological innovation and good change management, PT PLN can strengthen its role as a leader in clean mobility and contribute to global sustainable development goals.

Improving the performance of heat sinks through the integration of fins and the utilization of graphene-mixed latent heat energy storage

Effective thermal management is significant to ensure the safety of all operating systems. However, these systems demand innovative thermal management technology. A heat sink with improved thermal conductivity is one of the passive heat management techniques. This study focuses on enhancing thermal management in devices by evaluating the performance of a heat sink with and without fins integrated with high thermal conductivity graphene-incorporated phase change material. Paraffin wax with a melting temperature of 58 °C was used as the phase change material. The study examines how the addition of graphene nanoparticles improves heat transfer capacity and extends the heat sink's working duration. The findings revealed that the phase change material extends the heat sink's working duration while adding nanoparticles improves performance. The performance of the phase change material and mixture of the nanoparticles was examined using a finned heat sink under constant heat input. The heating and cooling cycle of the heat sink was examined. The performance of the heat sink with fins and nano PCM was increased by 30 % compared to the baseline heat sink at 15 W heat input. This performance was increased to 45 % when the heat input changed to 30 W. The results indicated that nanoparticles in the phase change material augment the heat sink's recovery time, irrespective of the influence of fins.

The Role of Ecopreneurship in Bali’s Sustainable Tourism Development: Insights into Government Policy, Tourist Awareness and Preferences

There are numerous environmental issues in Bali, a popular tourist destination in Indonesia, including the problems of waste, critical land, beach abrasion, coral reef destruction and water contamination, all attributed to the rapid expansion of the tourism industry. Ecotourism is one of the solutions to address these concerns, and the initiatives taken involve ecopreneurship, the process of starting and running green firms that support sustainable tourism growth in Bali. The goal of ecopreneurship in the tourism industry is to create and run enterprises that have as minimum negative environmental impacts as possible, while maximising positive social and economic consequences. This is done through improvements on both public policies and tourist preferences, to promote a sustainable tourism development. A mixed method was used, combining SEM PLS, Path Methods, and qualitative research, with comprehensive interviews conducted among ecopreneurs, government agencies, tourists, and academics in Bali. Ecopreneurship variables, comprising environmentally friendly products and services, green technology innovation, environmental and natural resource management, local community involvement, environmental education and awareness, waste and emission management, collaboration and partnerships, measurement of environmental performance and sustainability, moderated by the government policy and tourist awareness and preference, were found to have a significant influence on sustainable tourism variables, namely, natural environment preservation, social welfare and culture, local economic empowerment, resource management and environmental impact reduction, local community participation and public consultation.

PT Gojek Indonesia: Maintaining Corporate Sustainability with Innovation and Customer Perception

This research has a special problem in considering how much influence innovation management has on technological innovation, customer satisfaction on customer loyalty, as well as the impact of technological innovation and customer loyalty on corporate performance and corporate sustainability. The aim is that PT. Go-Jek Indonesia can consider things that can maintain corporate sustainability in a business context. This research uses quantitative research methods as its research method by distributing questionnaires to Go-Jek users who will later provide their views on PT. Gojek Indonesia. Researchers found that there is a close relationship between all variables and corporate sustainability directly and indirectly. This illustrates theoretically that maintaining innovation and customer perspective with good intentions will have an impact on the corporate's sustainability in the long term or the sustainability of PT. Gojek Indonesia. The research concludes that technological innovation, innovation management, customer satisfaction, customer loyalty, and organizational performance allsignificantly and positively impact PT. Gojek Indonesia’s sustainability. The findings emphasize the need for PT. Gojek Indonesia to prioritize these variables to ensure the corporate's long-term sustainability and success.

Green supply chain management practices and environmental performance in the healthcare sector: the mediating role of green innovation

Purpose This study aims to assess the effects of green supply chain management (GSCM) strategies on health-care organizations’ environmental performance (EP). It also assesses that green innovation (GI), including green technology innovation (GTI) and green management innovation (GMI), plays mediating roles in the connection between GSCM and EP. Design/methodology/approach In total, 375 health-care sector employees in the Chattogram division of Bangladesh provided opinions in the questionnaire survey. PLS-SEM was used to verify the data’s validity and reliability and assess the hypotheses. Findings The findings reveal that GSCM practices significantly positively impact GI and EP. Moreover, GTI and GMI mediate the relationship between GSCM and EP in Bangladesh’s health-care sector. Practical implications The current findings could promote environmental sustainability in Bangladesh’s health-care industry by fostering environmental collaboration. Originality/value The detection of the mediation effect of GTI and GMI on GSCM and EP is a unique contribution of this study that enriches the present GSCM and GI literature, particularly in the Bangladeshi health-care sector.

Technological innovation from a system dynamics approach

Technological development and innovation models have evolved over time and in an increasingly globalized context. Their implementation results in the strengthening of competitiveness through the strategic development of human and technical capabilities. This research aims to design a model for the management of technological innovation with a system dynamics (SD) approach. The construction of the SD model is based on the analysis of the models found in the literature on the subject; the methodology applied includes the definition of the problem, the causal loop diagram, the flow diagram, the summary of the main equations, and the validation of the model. The main variables identified were capital available for investment in innovation, capital invested for high-level human resources training, human resources with high-level training, capital invested in innovation projects, innovation service contracts, profits from innovation service contracts, and initial capital for investment in innovation.

ІННОВАЦІЙНІ ЗАХОДИ В УПРАВЛІННІ ОРГАНІЗАЦІЙНИМИ КОНФЛІКТАМИ НА ПІДПРИЄМСТВІ В У СУЧАСНИХ УМОВАХ ВЕДЕННЯ БІЗНЕСУ

The article analyzes the role of conflicts in the development of enterprises and their employees. The authors of the article point to the critical importance of understanding internal conflicts to achieve efficiency and innovation in management. They divide conflicts into constructive ones, which contribute to the development of new optimization projects, and destructive ones, which lead to a break in relations and violation of cooperation norms. The author offers two main directions of conflict management: for constructive conflicts – identification of common positions and coordination of interests for joint problem solving; for destructive – identifying the interests of the parties to reach agreements. Enterprise management must provide clear guidance on requirements and organizational procedures, promote coordination and cooperation among employees, and establish common goals to motivate employees to work together to solve problems. The article emphasizes the need to develop a program-targeted approach to conflict management, which includes the development of a management system, the creation of coordination subsystems at each level of management, and the planning of actions to reconcile conflicts. The analysis of conflict situations should include the determination of the causes of the conflict, the topics of mutual disputes, the motivation of the participants and the direction of their actions. The article emphasizes that effective conflict management involves an integrated approach that ensures not only the resolution of existing contradictions, but also the development of positive aspects in the activities of the labor team. An important role is played by preventive measures, which help to avoid the occurrence of conflicts, as well as the readiness of management to resolve the conflict. The scientific novelty consists in the development and testing of a complex approach to the identification, analysis and resolution of organizational conflicts, which includes the use of innovative management methods and technologies. This study goes beyond traditional approaches to conflict resolution, proposing the integration of modern communication tools, psychological techniques, and strategic analysis to create an effective conflict management system in an enterprise.

Linking Digital Orientation and Data-Driven Innovations: A SAP–LAP Linkage Framework and Research Propositions

Data-driven technologies can have a broad impact on innovation management. In the present digital era, it has become a complex and debatable topic that requires refinement from a research perspective. Along this line, this study aims to understand how digital orientation facilitates the adoption of digital technologies to improve innovation performance. Using organizational learning theory and dynamic capability theory within a situation–actor–process and learning–action–performance framework, the study systematically captures and analyses the complexities and interactions among the factors affecting data-driven innovation in a case organization. It also highlights contingent variables that influence the relationship between data-driven insights produced by digital technologies and innovation performance. After case analysis, the study develops propositions and offers a conceptual model. Practitioners can use findings to develop a digital orientation for facilitating technology adoption and innovation management.

Assessment of China’s Macro-Readiness for Integrated Innovative Management Technologies Employment

Introduction. Economic entities should constantly apply various forms of innovation, including managerial and organizational innovations, to ensure the processes of developing and acquiring adaptive capacity. One of these innovations is integrated management technologies covering several interacting heterogeneous technological, economic, organizational, social, and psychological processes or several management functions.
 Aim and tasks. The study aims to elaborate a procedure for assessing a country’s macro-readiness to apply integrated innovative management technologies and qualitatively characterise its level.
 Results. An assessment of macro-readiness to apply integrated innovative management technologies was conducted using the case of China. In order to obtain a generalized evaluation of the country’s macro-readiness to apply integrated innovative management technologies, synthetic taxonomic indicators based on readiness components and a general synthetic indicator were generated. The synthetic human capital and research indicator changed from low (0.243) in 2016 to high (0.647) in 2020. The same trend is inherent in the synthetic indicator of ICT availability and use, which increased from 0.367 to 0.920, and in the synthetic indicator of institutional and business environment, which increased from 0.310 to 0.876. Although it has improved from 0.205 to 0.451, the synthetic indicators of financial resources and development have not yet reached a high level.
 Conclusion. The suggested procedure for assessing macro-readiness to apply integrated innovative management technologies is based on constructing a synthetic indicator of readiness, combining the taxonomic indicators of human, digital, financial, and institutional readiness. This procedure, implying the determination of their qualitative levels, enables us to determine a country’s readiness to support business entities’ adoption of new management technologies. The assessment of China's readiness for applying integrated innovative management technologies using the developed approach revealed that the ICT component is the best developed, while the financial component is the most underdeveloped.

Comparison of the criteria affecting the digital innovation performance of the European Union (EU) member and candidate countries with the entropy weight-TOPSIS method and investigation of its importance for SMEs

Digital innovation offers new competitive opportunities for the EU to achieve its digital strategies and innovation objectives. This study aims to show that the digital innovation performance of SMEs is related to criteria that affect countries' levels of digital technology adoption, digital transformation and innovation management. The digital innovation indicators used for this purpose are ICT, knowledge-intensive employment, university-industry collaborations on R&D, digital skills, patent applications, investments in new technologies, R&D expenditures, use of virtual social networks and cyber security. Research data were obtained from the Global Innovation Index (GII), Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) and Network Readiness Index (NRI). These data were analyzed with the Entropy Weight-TOPSIS method and EU and candidate countries were compared. In the results of the research analysis, Austria, Denmark and Germany took the first three places. In the ranking of these countries, ICT utilization, patent applications and R&D expenditures have high scores. The last three ranked countries are Turkey, Serbia and Croatia. Compared to EU members and other candidate countries, these three countries have the lowest scores in ICT use, patent applications, knowledge intensive employment, digital skills, investment in new technologies and university-industry cooperation in R&D.

THE ROLE OF THE MACHINE-BUILDING CLUSTER IN ENSURING THE DEFENCE CAPABILITY OF UKRAINE

Topicality. Given the geopolitical situation, where Ukraine faces threats to its sovereignty and territorial integrity, ensuring defense capability becomes the most important task. The development of modern technologies in the defense industry, including Industry 4.0, emphasizes the need to supply the Ukrainian army with high-quality foreign equipment and technologies. Towards the Sustainable Intensification of Aquaculture: Exploring Possible Ways Forward

Meeting the global demand for aquatic products while maintaining sustainability is a critical challenge. This review article examines global practices of land-based aquaculture systems that could be implemented in the EU, as the EU has not yet fully realized its potential in developing the aquaculture sector. Therefore, the article examines different aspects (aquaculture systems, technological solutions and improvements, and best management practices) in achieving sustainable aquaculture and emphasizes the need for innovation and cooperation in the face of increasing environmental concerns and resource constraints. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for the sustainable intensification of aquaculture. The way forward requires a combination of different and improved-upon technological solutions complemented by technological innovation and better management practices. The sustainability of aquaculture requires a broader application of the ecosystem approach to aquaculture and the promotion of energy and resource efficiency measures in aquaculture systems.
