Pharmacy technician specialist: A career opportunity

A training program for pharmacy technician specialists is described. The 200-hour pharmacy technician specialist training program consists of 20 hours of management seminars and conferences and 180 hours of on-the-job training. The program educates inhouse-trained technicians to assume more specialized tasks and supervisory roles. The behavioral objectives for the training program, and the responsibilities and job description of the technician specialist are presented. The technician specialist training program provides career opportunities which help stimulate and motivate technicians.

The dynamics of dietetics

The forces which have and are producing change in dietetics are recapitulated, as are developments in the profession which have evolved since 1972 when the Study Commission on Dietetics made its report. The coordinated undergraduate program in dietetics has gained much ground; in 1972, there were but seven such programs. Today there are forty-three. More than three hundred traineeships are currently preparing over five hundred trainees to take their places in the profession. Another facet of training involves programs for dietetic technicians and dietetic assistants, designed to open up the career ladder concept. Continuing education is of prime importance for those beyond the entry-level of competence. The dietitian's first responsibility is to society, preceding that for the profession-as has been plainly indicated in a number of A.D.A. Position Papers and the emphasis of the Association in its legislative thrust on the value of nutrition education in preventive health care. Concern of the Association about the competency of practicing dietitians has also been reflected in the early appointment of a Committee on Professional Standards Review. The Association, as a member of the National Nutrition Consortium, is an advocate for a "National Nutrition Policy" and must continue to work for recognition that nutritional care is basic to comprehensive health care.

Implementation of the medication technician concept

The implementation of a pharmacy-controlled medication technician program is discussed. Qualified candidates are selected and trained to administer medications to patients under the supervision of a pharmacist. A centralized unit dose drug distribution system is employed. The responsibilities of the technicians and the pharmacists are presented.

Training, utilization and motivation of pharmacy technicians–a five-year analysis

A 600-hour-on-the-job training program for hospital pharmacy technicians is described. Qualified applicants who successfully pass a written examination are admitted to the program. Trainees receive both didactic and practical experience in all service areas of the pharmacy department. Opportunity for advancement through a technician specialist training program is available. Eighty percent of all applicant accepted into the program graduated, and 39% are currently employed by the pharmacy department with an average of 42 months work experience each. It is recommended that national guidelines are established for hospital-based pharmacy technician training program.

Qualified teachers of dental laboratory technic are being prepared at Southern Illinois University for secondary and vocational school faculties. A five-part program that leads to a bachelor of science degree is described.

The mental health technician: Maryland's design for a new health career.

Alternative pathways to traditional graduate education and the national emergence of community college curricula leading to associate of arts degrees in a variety of human service fields are discussed in relation to Maryland's mental health technician program. Emphasizing the need, initially, for "generalist" skills, the author proposes an open-ended system for the technicians' continued educational and professional growth through subspecialty in-service courses, opportunities for advanced collegiate education, and administrative channels for lateral and vertical mobility.
