This series of books publishes chapters written by experts in their field, invited by the Editorial Board. Since the authors are not limited by space, they can cover their topic comprehensively and provide us with an extensive list of references. The print and the figures are of excellent quality. These books provide optimal continuous training. The first part on advances contains four chapters:

The beginnings of Acta Neurochirurgica and the work of Fritz Loew, chief editor from 1958 – 1997. An historical vignette

Acta Neurochirurgica was founded in 1950, in the difficult time after World War II, by Mario Milletti (Bologna) and Wolfram Sorgo (Innsbruck), and published by Springer press, Vienna. From the beginning the new journal was conceived as an international journal with an impressive list of outstanding neurosurgeons in the editorial board. Only a few years later the issues appeared at irregular intervals due to individual problems of both editors. Wilhelm Tönnis took the initiative to keep the journal alive, when he asked-in consent with Springer press-his staff member Fritz Loew to continue the editorial work and to assemble a new prestigious editorial board. Loew succeeded with both tasks and remained editor-in-chief for nearly 38 years. Initially, all papers were published in the native languages of the authors: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. With ongoing time the journal accepted manuscripts in English only. The slow progress of this process exemplifies the slow integration of the European countries. In 1971, at the founding meeting of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) in Prague, Acta Neurochirurgica became the official organ of the EANS. Right from the beginning of Acta Neurochirurgica, Supplement volumes were added. Also, the book series Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery is an offspring of Acta Neurochirurgica. Acta Neurochirurgica has become one of the most important neurosurgical journals worldwide. This historical sketch is based on an interview with Fritz Loew, now 91 years old, to which data from the available literature and the Archives of German Neurosurgery, as well as personal information by several colleagues were added.

Each individual chapter offers a valuable review of the cutting-edge information and knowledge in each subject. first section of Advances discusses wide spectrum related with the cerebral plasticity which is the potential of the nervous system to reshape itself during ontogeny, learning or following injuries. author emphasizes that enhanced preoperative prediction of an individual's potential for reorganization might be integrated into surgical planning and preserving quality of life through tailored rehabilitation programmes to optimize functional recovery following resection of a tumor. following chapter of Advances covers tumor-biology and current of skull-base chordomas. Skull base chordomas are very challenging to treat. outcome is dictated by primarily by the intrinsic biology of the tumor and seems only to have a secondary impact. This chapter present a review of the current knowledge and experience on the tumor biology, diagnosis and of chordodmas. chapter of The influence of genetics on intracranial aneurysm formation and rupture: current knowledge and its possible impact on future treatment summarize the current knowledge of intracranial aneurysm genetics and also discuss the method to detect the causalities. And the author give an outlook on possible future genetically engineered therapies, whose development are well underway. Advances section are not only informative but also intriguing. This section provide the reader with an overview of the new concepts in the of challenging neurosurgery field. technical standards section starts with extended endoscopic endonasal approach to the midline skull base. author proudly mention that it is difficult today to define the boundaries and the future limits of the extended approaches because the work is still in progress, but the train has moved and is bringing with it technical advances of which the patient and young neurosurgeon will benefit. Dr. Cappabianca discusses all the positive and negative aspects related with this new endoscopic surgical approaches to skull base pathologies such as pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngioma, tuberculum sellae meningioma etc. final chapter discuss the surgical anatomy of the jugular foramen. jugular foramen may be involved by various diseases which are dominated by tumors. This chapter cover the skull base approaches with a gradual level of exposure and invasiveness. skull base neurosurgeon needs to be able to master several surgical approaches and to propose an individual tailored surgery. For those interested in brain tumor biology and surgery, skull base surgery, and vascular neurosurgery, I highly recommend this book for their understanding and catching new stream of concept to combat very challenging neurosurgical fields.
