Although strategies and templates can be used to get a self-managed team started, there are no templates that will move the team to self-management. This requires a manager to continuously review a team's progress and find ways to drive it toward self-management. One way to do this is to assign an activity to the team that will focus it on developing the skills and methods required to reach full empowerment. This article demonstrates how two focus activities were used to develop a successful high-performance self-managed team. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
