Making an impact: the new 2024 Medical Library Association research agenda

Objective: This research project sought to identify those subject areas that leaders and researcher members of the Medical Library Association (MLA) determined to be of greatest importance for research investigation. It updates two previous studies conducted in 2008 and 2011. Methods: The project involved a three-step Delphi process aimed at collecting the most important and researchable questions facing the health sciences librarianship profession. First, 495 MLA leaders were asked to submit questions answerable by known research methods. Submitted questions could not exceed 50 words in length. There were 130 viable, unique questions submitted by MLA leaders. Second, the authors asked 200 eligible MLA-member researchers to select the five (5) most important and answerable questions from the list of 130 questions. Third, the same 130 MLA leaders who initially submitted questions were asked to select their top five (5) most important and answerable questions from the 36 top-ranked questions identified by the researchers. Results: The final 15 questions resulting from the three phases of the study will serve as the next priorities of the MLA Research Agenda. The authors will be facilitating the organization of teams of volunteers wishing to conduct research studies related to these identified top 15 research questions. Conclusion: The new 2024 MLA Research Agenda will enable the health information professions to allocate scarce resources toward high-yield research studies. The Agenda could be used by journal editors and annual meeting organizers to prioritize submissions for research communications. The Agenda will provide aspiring researchers with some starting points and justification for pursuing research projects on these questions.

Infections Management in the Lung Transplant Setting in Italy: A Web-Survey.

Infections significantly impact morbidity and mortality in lung transplant (LuTx) recipients. This survey focused on documenting current practices regarding the prevention and management of infections in LuTx in Italy. A 52-question survey was administered online in the period from December 1, 2023, to January 31, 2024, assessing center characteristics, Tx team organization, microbiological investigations, infection prevention, and management. All Italian LuTx centers were invited to participate. Nine out of 10 Italian LuTx centers answered. Most centers (6/9, 67%) performed LuTx only on adults. Chronic infection or colonization by Mycobacterium abscessus and Burkholderia cenocepacia is considered a contraindication to LuTx in five and two centers, respectively. For cytomegalovirus D+/R- patients, prophylaxis is used in six centers (67%), with a variable duration from 3 to 12 months. Two centers also use IgG. Three centers (33%) use a pre-emptive strategy. Four centers (45%) screen for Human herpesvirus 8 infection. Regarding antibiotic prophylaxis, most centers (6/9, 67%) utilise a dual regimen of anti-pseudomonal penicillin plus glycopeptide. The two most common durations of antibiotic prophylaxis were 72 h and 7 days, each reported by two centers (22%). Targeted prophylaxis against fungal infections is employed by a minority of centers (4/9, 44%). Inhaled amphotericin B is the most common antifungal, used as targeted prophylaxis (2/4, 50%) and universal prophylaxis (2/5, 40%). Almost all centers (8/9, 89%) involve the Tx infectious diseases specialist in the recipient management since the pre-listing period. There is considerable heterogeneity in infection management among Italian LuTx centers. Establishing a shared platform for data collection and outcome evaluation is essential to improve infection management.

Listen, act and support: An investigation into individual and organisational incivility management in veterinary practice.

This study investigates the impact of workplace and client incivility on veterinary staff wellbeing and job satisfaction, examining both individual responses and organisational support mechanisms to identify best practices for managing incivility. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving a survey of 192 veterinary professionals from various roles and practice types. The survey measured experiences of incivility, individual factors (anxiety, stress, burnout, job satisfaction and turnover intention) and organisational factors (perceived organisational support, social support and civility climate). Client incivility was a significant predictor of increased anxiety, burnout and stress, while co-worker incivility was a significant predictor of increased anxiety. Organisational support and team civility were found to be significant predictors of job satisfaction and turnover intention, with organisational support mediating the impact of co-worker incivility on anxiety. Qualitative analysis highlighted the importance of listening to staff concerns and taking proactive measures to address incivility. The data are cross-sectional and subjective, and the sample is predominantly female. Effective management of incivility in veterinary practices requires robust organisational support and clear policies. Practices should prioritise listening to staff, fostering a supportive environment and implementing training programs to mitigate the adverse effects of incivility on staff wellbeing and job satisfaction.

Original Research: Is Your Outpatient Office Prepared to Manage an Opioid Overdose?

Outpatient facilities, such as family and adult practice offices, psychiatric offices, and substance use treatment centers, should be equipped to manage medical emergencies and facilitate hospital transfers. Clinics that treat patients with opioid use disorder must be especially prepared to address respiratory arrest due to opioid overdose. The objective of this integrative review was to identify emergency response initiatives already investigated or developed that could be adapted to address opioid-related medical emergencies in the outpatient adult treatment setting. Initial and updated literature searches were conducted using MEDLINE and PubMed. These searches yielded 207 and 60 articles of interest, respectively, and a total of 6 and 18 were selected for retrieval. Of these, 5 and 8, for a total of 13, met the inclusion criteria. We found few publications in the mental health literature to inform or guide outpatient practitioners in preparing their offices for emergencies. This integrative review draws from all areas of the medical literature to identify emergency response strategies that have been developed for outpatient settings. We identified 4 major themes in office emergency preparedness: simulation training, response team organization, equipment readiness, and emergency action protocols. These 4 themes can provide guidance for improving readiness in medical offices, and in ambulatory mental health and substance use clinics. Researchers will need to develop emergency response algorithms that address these themes and assess patient outcomes.

This paper explores strategies for power grid marketing management based on big data, addressing areas such as customer segmentation and personalized services, as well as market demand forecasting and response. Furthermore, it proposes implementation pathways, including essential elements such as organizational structure and team building, data quality and governance systems, training, and cultural development. These efforts aim to ensure the effective application of big data technology and maximize its value.

Anaesthesia practice in Europe: A survey of the National Anaesthesiologists Societies Committee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care.

Similar to other continents, Europe is experiencing a shortage of anaesthesia workforce, which profoundly impacts the national healthcare systems of affected countries. To assess the current landscape of the anaesthesia workforce, organisational practices, rules and responsibilities of anaesthesiologists and other anaesthesia providers in operating rooms. Survey. Thirty-nine out of 41 European countries were surveyed between April 2022 and April 2023. Delegates of the National Anaesthesiologists Societies Committee (NASC) of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC). A faculty of experts from France, Germany and Italy, selected by the Chair of NASC, developed a survey consisting of 16 questions, which was sent to the NASC delegates of all European countries. Responses from the NASC delegates. The anaesthesia workforce, composition, roles and duties of anaesthesia teams vary significantly among European countries. The majority of respondents reported a workforce shortage, with variable trends, exacerbated in some cases by an increased loss of anaesthesiologists following the COVID-19 pandemic. Significant differences in anaesthesiologists' salaries exist across countries. A one-to-one anaesthesiologist-to-patient ratio during general anaesthesia maintenance, neuraxial and peripheral blocks is the most common; however, in a notable number of cases, this ratio decreases to one-to-two or even less. In such instances, residents or nonphysician anaesthesia personnel (NPAs) play a crucial role, enabling anaesthesiologists to supervise more than one patient simultaneously. Differences in the training of anaesthesia team members, as well as rules regulating anaesthesia team composition and the autonomy of its members, were also evident. The survey provides data on the current anaesthesia practice in Europe. The availability, composition and organisation of anaesthesia team members differ among European countries. The study highlights areas for further focus in operating room organisation and anaesthesia team composition, particularly regarding safety, efficacy and cost-effectiveness.

Future‐Making Power: A Study of Competing Imagined Futures in Healthcare

AbstractThis paper presents a conceptual model of strategies of power in future‐making, informed by a case study in the healthcare sector. In zooming out from investigating the future‐making activities of an organizational innovation project team and tracing competing imagined futures enacted by medical professionals and strategic management, this study explains how and why the project struggled to realize its mandate. In this case, we identify three strategies of power, namely mobilization, discipline and discretion, and discuss their potential controversies and combinations. Moreover, we contribute to theories on discretionary power, demonstrating how it is produced by combining interdiscursivity with management control and nondecision. Strategies of discretion are productive in the realm of future‐making, particularly in exploiting forces of discipline and mobilization to enable parallel imagined futures to be created and maintained over time. On the downside, this may keep competing imagined futures hostage, potentially serving non‐transparent agendas.

Governing the commons: code ownership and code-clones in large-scale software development

ContextIn software development organizations employing weak or collective ownership, different teams are allowed and expected to autonomously perform changes in various components. This creates diversity both in the knowledge of, and in the responsibility for, individual components.ObjectiveOur objective is to understand how and why different teams introduce technical debt in the form of code clones as they change different components.MethodWe collected data about change size and clone introductions made by ten teams in eight components which was part of a large industrial software system. We then designed a Multi-Level Generalized Linear Model (MLGLM), to illustrate the teams’ differing behavior. Finally, we discussed the results with three development teams, plus line manager and the architect team, evaluating whether the model inferences aligned with what they expected. Responses were recorded and thematically coded.ResultsThe results show that teams do behave differently in different components, and the feedback from the teams indicates that this method of illustrating team behavior can be useful as a complement to traditional summary statistics of ownership.ConclusionsWe find that our model-based approach produces useful visualizations of team introductions of code clones as they change different components. Practitioners stated that the visualizations gave them insights that were useful, and by comparing with an average team, inter-team comparisons can be avoided. Thus, this has the potential to be a useful feedback tool for teams in software development organizations that employ weak or collective ownership.

Corporate culture as the social foundation of strategic management of virtual teams

The article explores the features of corporate culture as a social basis for managing virtual teams in the context of modern digital transformation and globalization. It considers the role of the corporate culture of organizations in the context of managing virtual teams. The importance of effective mechanisms of corporate culture in maintaining work productivity, motivation, professional and personal development, and cohesion of employees in virtual teams, where the actual presence of the employee in the office is minimized or absent, which causes many risks and challenges, is determined. The study highlights important aspects of corporate culture, such as the social foundation of strategic management of virtual teams and, in particular, its influence on communication, coordination, trust, and adaptation of new employees in remote work conditions. An analysis of the role of strategic management for virtual teams of organizations and the role of corporate culture was carried out, and its advantages and disadvantages were highlighted. To overcome the key risks and challenges of working with virtual teams, taking into account the specifics of their functioning, the key principles of forming an organization's corporate culture are proposed. The article reveals how corporate values help overcome cultural barriers and ensure effective cooperation in multinational teams. Special attention is paid to the issue of forming an optimal scheme for the gradual formation and development of the organization's corporate culture, with an emphasis on the criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the culture, as well as on the need to develop communication strategies, taking into account the specifics of the work of virtual teams. The article emphasizes the importance of developing new tools and approaches to support the motivation of inclusiveness and ethical standards in the development of corporate culture for members of virtual teams of the organization, which is a real challenge of today's organizations in crisis and unstable conditions.

The Pathway to Startup Success: A Comprehensive Systematic Review of Critical Factors and the Future Research Agenda in Developed and Emerging Markets

Notwithstanding the benefits derived from successful startup firms in the contemporary entrepreneurial landscape, for many startup firms, the pathway to success is extremely challenging; unfortunately, the failure rate is globally high. The aim of this article is to review empirical contributions regarding startup firms and provide a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing their success in developed and emerging markets. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, a systematic search was undertaken within the Web of Science database, encompassing studies published between 2004 and 2024, which were analyzed. The PRISMA framework is preferred because it stands out from other guidelines due to its transparent and complete reporting and evidence-based recommendations. This work also employed aggregate impact estimation to rank the relative importance of each success factor regarding the success of startups. This article offers a comprehensive analysis of 24 success factors extracted from a systematic review of 48 empirical studies conducted on the subject. We prioritized each success factor according to their relative impact on the success of startup firms. These were classified as personal (entrepreneurial vision and leadership, adaptability, networking), organizational (team building, financial and resource management, innovation, strategy and marketing) and environmental factors (government support and dynamism of political, economic and cultural environment). The findings underscore the importance of a holistic approach that considers both internal and external factors in fostering startup success. However, it is essential to acknowledge that not all factors exert comparable effects on success; certain factors wield a substantial influence, whereas others demonstrate a significant yet lesser impact. Several conclusions and implications for startup founders, government policymakers and startup firm researchers are derived.

Risk and Prognosis of Hamstring Injuries in the National Football League: A 12-Year Review.

Hamstring injuries can have a significant burden on a professional football player's career and performance. One in 4 players will suffer a lower extremity strain in their career, with the hamstring being the most common. These injuries are often fraught with extended periods of recovery and reinjury rates varying between 16% and 38%. To determine the progression and duration of hamstring injury as well as risk factors and probability of reinjury in the National Football League (NFL). Descriptive epidemiology study. Data were extracted from the official publicly accessible NFL database of injuries. NFL players suffering a hamstring injury during the study period of 2008-2020 were identified. Injuries were reported weekly as mandated by the NFL. Players were deemed cleared from injury when no longer listed in the injury report (IR). Reinjury was defined as any subsequent hamstring injury after a player's initial injury. The duration of injury and factors associated with injury were analyzed. Secondary objectives included team-specific injury rates and timing of injury. A total of 2101 hamstring injuries occurred among 1354 players. The mean duration of the IR was 2.4 ± 2.1 weeks. A total of 442 (33%) players suffered subsequent reinjury, 27% of which occurred during the same season. The mean duration on the IR for reinjury was 2.4 ± 1.8 weeks, with no significant difference in duration compared with initial injury (2.4 ± 1.8 vs 2.2 ± 1.7; P = .138). Defensive skill players were most frequently injured (50.4%) followed by offensive skill players (37.7%). Of the 4812 total IR listings, 1806 (38%) did not participate in practice. A total of 1590 (33.5%) had limited participation in practice, and 1353 (28.5%) had full participation in practice. Injury rates among teams varied and ranged from 0.6% (Baltimore Ravens) to 5.7% (Houston Texans), with a median of 3.1% (P < .0001). Hamstring injuries can have a lasting impact on a player's career with more than a third of players suffering subsequent reinjury. Although suffering a hamstring injury predisposes a player to reinjury, previous injury was not associated with longer recovery times. Rates of injury among organizational teams vary; thus, further research to understand the difference in preventive measures and treatment protocols may be warranted.

Pupils' challenging behaviour towards their teachers: The role of teacher team collaboration in prevention. A qualitative study

Student challenging behavior toward teachers is a common phenomenon across countries. This qualitative study, based on 28 interviews with teachers and their school principals, from nine public schools in Denmark, examined how teachers prevent challenging behavior and the role of team organization. The findings emphasize that sharing knowledge, experiences, and responsibilities within teams facilitates prevention. School principals play a key role in supporting teachers and fostering reflection on teacher-student interactions. Trust among team members is essential for effective collaboration. Strengthening team organization and collaboration offers a practical approach to managing and preventing challenging behaviors within the student-teacher dynamic in schools.

Interfaith Collaboration: Boundary Crossing in a Participatory Action Research Project with Health Care Chaplains in The Netherlands.

This article explores the challenges faced by a multifaith chaplaincy team in a Dutch health care organization when searching for a shared professional identity regarding the role of worldview and religion. Using boundary theory, we show how the diverse worldviews and the contradictory visions on their role for chaplaincy's professional identity led to misunderstandings and conflict. However, open and respectful dialogue about these differences helped clarify disagreements and identify common ground. The findings suggest that in secular contexts worldview remains significant in chaplaincy and that engaging in dialogue about worldviews and seeking connections across differences is the basis for a shared professional identity.

The Impact of Workflow Interruptions on Multidisciplinary Team Communication in Hybrid Healthcare Settings

Workflow interruptions are skyrocketing in the contemporary workplace, especially in collaborative team environments. The reliance on (communication) technologies and accessibility through email and phone creates increasing avenues for frequent teamwork interruptions. In this study, we investigate in fourteen multidisciplinary team meetings in hybrid healthcare settings (1) which workflow interruptions naturally emerge and (2) how these interruptions influence the communicative processes within the team. We find evidence for an interruptive meeting environment, characterized by videoconferencing issues, disruptive beepers/phones that go off, and people leaving and entering the meeting room during patient discussions. Contrary to what was expected, team members initially respond to the interruption with positive statements (i.e., humor) as a coping mechanism, which decreases significantly in the minutes after the interruptive event. After the interruptive episode, significantly more negative statements, as well as conversational repetitiveness occurs. This research contributes to understanding naturally occurring workflow interruptions in actual organizational healthcare teams, by providing objective and fine-grained empirical insights into how workflow interruptions affect changes in the teams’ communication.

Identifying CFIR Inner Setting Factors in the Implementation of a Salon-Based Intervention to Reduce Barriers and Improve Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Uptake Among Black Women in US South.

US Black women are disproportionally represented in new HIV diagnoses. PrEP is effective in HIV prevention, but Black women's uptake is low. The UPDOs salon-based intervention is effective in overcoming barriers to care but scaling implementation is needed. This mixed-method pilot study sought to understand how salon organizational factors may have influenced UPDOs implementation with a focus on organizational culture, team culture, relational connection, and communication within a Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) inner setting lens. Organizational culture and team culture were measured using the Organizational Culture Survey (OCS) and Team Psychological Safety Scale (TPS). Relational connection and communication were explored qualitatively using participant observations and semi-structured interviews. Findings were positive towards teamwork, morale, information flow, involvement, and supervision as well as reflected positive organizational environment that were supportive of developing knowledge and skills. Relational connection and communication created a trusting environment that facilitated implementation. Future research can benefit from examining organizational environment when scaling interventions to overcome HIV and PrEP inequities.

Postconcussive symptom severity, risk factors for prolonged recovery, and mental health history: Pathways of influence in a diverse pediatric sample

AbstractIntroductionThe objective of this study was to confirm previous risk factors for concussion recovery in a diverse pediatric sample and to elucidate the pathways by which individual mental health factors influence postconcussive symptom reporting and time to clearance.MethodsSubjects between 13 and 17 years of age (N = 642; mean age = 15.40; 45% female) were analyzed from a prospectively completed database associated with a multidisciplinary TBI/concussion clinic in the southwest United States. Fifty‐four percent of participants identified as Hispanic, 41% received medical coverage through Medicaid, and 54% were injured during participation in an organized sports team. Mediation analysis using a structural equational framework was employed to examine the significance of both direct and indirect effects from preinjury factors (e.g., prior concussions, female gender, history of migraines, anxiety, depression, attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], and learning disorders) on postinjury symptom reporting (at baseline and visit 1) and time to clearance.ResultsHigher symptom reporting at baseline was significantly associated with history of anxiety, depression, ADHD, headaches, and female gender. Higher symptom reporting at visit 1 was significantly associated with baseline symptoms, female gender, and history of anxiety. Symptom scores at baseline fully accounted for the relation between history of depression and symptom scores at visit 1 and only partially accounted for the relation between history of anxiety and symptom scores at visit 1. Only history of anxiety indirectly contributed to greater days to clearance through higher symptom scores at visit 1.DiscussionThis study supports the concept that heterogenous experience following injury is influenced by preinjury factors and extends the generalizability of risk factors to a diverse sample of youth in terms of ethnicity, insurance status/type, and mechanism of injury. Anxiety and depression represent important noninjury factors that warrant considerable attention during concussion treatment and management.

Guidelines Management to Promotion of Wushu in Schools Within Jinzhong City

Research Objective: Wushu in schools promotes physical fitness, self-discipline, and focus while also preserving cultural heritage and instilling a sense of tradition. It promotes teamwork, builds confidence, and instills lifelong values such as perseverance and respect. Thus, this research aimed to study construct guideline management to promote wushu in schools within Jinzhong City Shanxi Province China. Research Method: This research is qualitative. The population of 1250 persons as a sample from Taro Yamane table opened confidence at 95% sample group was 286 students were student in the wushu club from 10 high schools in Jinzhong City, the step of collection data a questionnaire survey from students, 7 Expert interviews, 10 experts for Focus group and5 experts for Connoisseurship discuss and confirm guideline. The statistics analysis of data used content analysis and mean(x̄) and standard division (S.D.) Results: The results showed that the guideline management for promoting wushu in school was planning, organization, leading, and controlling. The planning has 9 items The organization has 9 items The leading 9 items and the controlling has 7 items. Conclusion: This study developed comprehensive guidelines for promoting Wushu in secondary schools in Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province, China, using strategic planning, organizing, leading, and controlling methods. Key findings highlight the importance of structured planning, effective team organization, leadership in athlete development, and systematic evaluation processes. The study emphasizes that successful Wushu promotion requires aligning curriculum adjustments with national goals, continuous teacher and coach development, and the integration of modern technologies for training and evaluation.

Dis-continuity in Continuity-of-Care: a pathway for more equal access to mental health care services?

Abstract Background Access to healthcare is core to achieving universal health coverage. Reaching and obtaining appropriate health care services requires engagement by health care organizations and users. For people with mental illness, access emerges as a continuous process, reflecting oscillating health conditions. This challenges aspirations of continuity of care (COC), but we know little about the experiences of users. Methods We carried out observations of interactions between professionals and users (n = 18) and semi-structured interviews with users, professionals, and managers (n = 33) in the specialised mental health services in Central Denmark Region and FACT-inspired teams in three municipalities. We also conducted 3 focus groups with regional and municipal professionals from these teams. Data was analysed through a qualitative thematic analysis. Results From the perspective of users, COC builds on the acknowledgment of their entire life situation. For users, this is about making connections between their past, present and future lives. Past experience affect their present abilities to follow treatment and influence future hopes and expectations. The acknowledgment of these connections often translates into spaces of discontinuity in continuity, where users need occasional breaks from treatment but worry about being excluded from treatment. Crucially, the organization of the FACT-inspired teams allows for flexibility in the intensity of visits and treatment. The norms of professionals also support users’ perspectives on COC, as the norms focus on building trust in the relations between users and professionals. Conclusions One important step to achieve more equal access is to integrate the social world of users. This requires organizational and professional approaches that allow for user needs for dis-continuity in COC. Key messages • For mental health service users, continuity-of-care includes breaks from treatment (discontinuity). • More equal health access requires adapting continuity-of-care to needs as perceived by users.

Refining the Scrum Paradigm: A Comprehensive Study of Software Development Practices (2020-2023)

This article presents a complex vision on software production practices aimed at enhancing the Scrum methodology within software project management. The recommended best practices are closely aligned with contemporary trends in the IT sector, including the total digitalization and virtualization of production processes, the transition to fully remote software development models, the incorporation of artificial intelligence technologies, and the implementation of cost-effective models in team organization.
