The Contribution of Sufism in Building and Advancing Islamic Civilization in Indonesia

Sufism is accused of being a 'virus' that hinders progress and causes the Muslim world to lag in the arena of modern civilization. Sufism teachings and doctrines are considered irrelevant to the spirit of the global era and modernism. Likewise, puritan Islamic groups regard Sufism as a heresy and misleading superstition, as we have seen recently with the emergence of radical-puritan/salafi-Salafi-Wahabic groups. Sufism and Civilization. The two fields seem to be separate. Sufism is often perceived as an individual inner world, an ascetic activity that is super closed close material world. While civilization is something that requires the manifestation of progress, both physical and non-physical. Can the two of them meet, how is the relationship between the two, negate or affirm, if the answer is positive and affirmative, we can trace the relationship between Sufism and civilization from the relationship between Islam and civilization. Judging from the type of research, this research is included in qualitative research. It is said to be qualitative because this research emphasizes more on presenting the existing data descriptively. The results of this study explain that the important role of Sufism is awaited again to restore the glory of Islamic civilization, especially in Southeast Asia, in the mamidative views of some Muslims towards Sufism. Tarekat dan Perubahan Sosial di Banten

This article aims to describe the involvement of Sufism orders (Tariqa) in the pace of social change in Banten. The main focus to be presented in this research article is how the Tariqa exists and develops in the life of Banten community and how the Tariqa plays a role in the social change. The method used in this study is a field research method with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation analysis of literary sources. The article’s research recorded findings that various Sufism organizations or Tariqa had existed and became important actors of social change in Banten’s historical phases since the era of the Banten Sultanate, Western colonialism, until Banten became part of Indonesian territory in the contemporary era. Furthermore, the role of the Tariqa in social change is expressed in three transmissions of its influence in Banten, namely 1) the presence of Sufism teachings as a source of inspiration for the Sultan’s (ruler’s) policies, 2) the establishment of Sufi-sultan teacher connections (ruler/government), and 3) the existence of Sufi scholars and Tariqa organizations as the basis of social and moral movements.

The debate on philosophical sufism: Dynamics and dialectics in Aceh

This research aims to explain the philosophy of tasawuf Hamzah Fansri in Nusantara Islam. The textual research method was employed to interpret the contents in the manuscripts of tasawuf falsafi in Aceh, especially regarding tasawuf falsafi, which Hamzah Fansūrī developed. The study findings confirm that Hamza Fansūrī's philosophical tasawuf thought is "symbolic-comtemplative" and attempts to locate the exploration of the symbols that are highlighted as the essence and substance of the teachings of philosophical tasawuf. There is a misunderstanding about philosophical Sufism, especially by other parties who try to observe and assess the substance of the teachings of philosophical Sufism, which is a natural thing. Criticism of Hamzah Fansurī's philosophical tasawuf thoughts, especially those made by Nūr al-Dīn al-Ranīrī, is commonplace and reasonable in the scientific realm of Islam. However, the accusation of slander and the opinion that Hamzah Fansurī has gone astray and deviated from Islamic principles is something common sense cannot accept. Hamzah Fansurī's thoughts related to Wujudiyah's views are widespread and have not only developed in Aceh. The originality of this study is that it confirms that philosophical Sufism has a symbolic and implicit aspect and characteristics that are difficult to understand. Therefore, if one is trapped in a narrow understanding of symbols, then philosophical Sufism is only a "skin" which is different from the substance or "content" inside.

PRACTICING VALUES OF PHILOSOPHICAL SUFISM IN THE PENCAK SILAT OF BROTHERHOOD FAITHFUL HEART OF TERATE

Purpose: Pencak silat has been a part of Indonesia's cultural heritage imparting lessons in Islamic morality, in addition to self-defense, cultural arts, sports, and mental and spiritual training. Members are trained in these skills along with Islamic religious lessons and the Sufi philosophy. Previous studies have however shown a grey side of pencak silat, which involved violence with other groups, and not the Sufi and the spiritual teachings. The current study, therefore, aimed to examine the Sufism in PSHT’s pencak silat and how its members practiced the teaching of Sufism and Islamic philosophy. Qualitative ethnographic research approach was used, with observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation as data collection instruments. Finds show that Sufism in PSHT means mastering a control over heart or mind, showing good behavior, de-radicalizing religion, and learn the meaning of life to develop spiritual intelligence. It was also evident in the study that Sufism can strengthen Muslim members' faith and aqidah as it also teaches religious tolerance towards non-Muslims. It strengthens inner relationships, builds noble character, preserves nature and peace, and increases ma'rifah knowledge by drawing closer to God. This research recommends that the government should support mental spiritual, cultural arts, martial arts, and sports in all pencak silat organizations in Indonesia and preserve the cultural heritage to benefit the nation, state, and society

Development and Growth of Tariqat in Tasawuf in Indonesia

The aims of this study are to find out Development and Growth of Tariqat in Tasawuf in Indonesia. This study use wualitative research method. The result of this study shows that accesses that arise in practicing the teachings of Sufism are caused by misunderstandings, and therefore do not need to be used as a reason to reject it. The thriving life of kebatinan kebatinan schools and clinical teachings in Indonesia is the result of people's inclination to like Sufism, but they do not receive proper channels and guidance so that it often becomes an obstacle to smooth development. Therefore, Islamic Sufism is a teaching that is capable and appropriate to guide the misguided teachings of kebatinan and clinics in the right direction to be deployed in the field of development. The more the true teachings of Sufism are broadcast and practiced, the stronger people's belief in God Almighty will be.

Pendidikan Multikultural Di Indonesia Berbasis Akhlak Tasawuf

This research aims to describe how the moral attitudes taught in the science of Sufism can serve as a foundation for multicultural education. The research method used is qualitative phenomenology, with an approach that includes in-depth interviews, direct field observations, and general observation. The result of this research is a design for multicultural education based on Sufi ethics. This study explores the collaboration between the concept of multicultural education and Sufi behavior in Sufism teachings. Both elements have developed significantly and have influenced various aspects of life. However, this research offers an integration of these two elements into a Sufi-oriented multicultural education system. This new model is expected to create serenity and peace for the Indonesian nation.

Aplikasi Nilai-Nilai Sufistik dalam Novel Rembulan Tenggelam di Wajahmu

Literary works that have various purposes such as adding knowledge and entertaining make novels loved by the public in their spare time. Some novels written by the author have their own message to convey for readers. One of the values conveyed is sufistic values. The purpose of this study is to find this value in the novel under study and with it can be a means and implementation of sufistic studies on sufistic value analysis, can be a comparison of analyzing sufistic values in other novels and can be a contribution of thought for the general public in taking wisdom from each book read. This research is a literature study using a qualitative approach. The result and discussion of this study is that al-Ghazali's view of sufistic values is expressed as the meaning of sufism teachings that produce morality with connected science and charity. The sufistic value consists of maqamat as the sufi path includes taubat, sabar, faqir, zuhud, tawakal, mahabbah, ma’rifat and ridha. In this novel, sufistic values are also found according to al-Ghazali's views which include the eight points of maqamat which are listed in the narrative of the depiction of the story and the dialogue of the characters. Because this research uses one view of a Sufi figure, it is hoped that the next research can be a comparison by using the views of other Sufi figures.

The Qur’anic Authority in Strengthening Sufism Teaching at Majlis Pengkajian Tauhid Tassauf Indonesia (MPTTI) in Indonesia

The article overviewed the Qur’anic textual authority in practices and the concept of living in Qur’anic behaviours for Monotheism and Sufism, a council of study in Aceh province. As it is known for a board of study existence, Majelis Pengkajian Tauhid Tasawuf Indonesia (MPTTI) is growing more controversial regarding religious harmony in Islamic group society and its particular Sufism teaching. Nevertheless, despite these controversial phenomena, the council retains its teaching principles. The board exclusively refers to its teaching on Qur’an scriptures and verses as countermeasures of marginality and oppression. The committee believed in the authority of Sufism teaching, which was baselined on the Qur’an. The article projected how the council employs the scripture to formulate Sufism with a phenomenology approach to the engagement of living hadith in practice. Later, the board exploits the scripture as the source to establish critique for disavowing acceptance behaviours in society. The council intends to restore the communal into the proper stream of Islamic tradition. Parallel to these intriguing findings, the commission proclaims the Al Qur’an as an appropriate establishment of primary character reference. Eventually, the fascinating texts employed by the council also drive to strengthen the validity of council identity on national and even international coverage, which overlaps other boards in the region.

Analisis Konseling Sufistik dalam Buku Suluk KH. Ach. Hariri Abdul Adhim, Pilar Spiritualitas Ma’had Aly Salafiyah Syafi’iyah Situbondo

Each individual is required to be able to address and resolve various kinds of problems. However, only a few of the individuals realize that they also need counseling services. The[1]refore, the selection of the teachings of Sufism as an instrument approach is seen as appro[1]priate, because Sufistic thinking which focuses on cleaning the soul in order to get closer to Allah SWT is seen to be much in line with psychology which has been the basis of the coun[1]seling approach. This study aims to describe the values of Sufistic counseling in KH.’s Suluk Book. Ach. Hariri Abdul Adhim, Spirituality Pillar of Ma’had Aly Salafiyah Syafi’iyah Situ[1]bondo. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with the type of hermeneutical research, while the data analysis uses the objectivist hermeneutics cycle of the part-whole li[1]ne from Gadamer. The conclusion of this study is that there are 6 mystical counseling valu[1]es contained in KH. Ach. Hariri Abdul Adhim, Spirituality Pillars of Ma’had Aly Salafiyah Syafi’iyah Situbondo, namely: intelligence (irsyad), patience, purification of the heart, get[1]ting used to deliberations, dhikr, and prayer.

The article analyzes the concept of “soul” in the work of one of the founders of the Sufi Turkic branch of Islam Khoja Ahmed Yassavi “Divani Hikmet”. In the philosophy of the Sufis, the soul of a person emanating from the Creator occupies a special place. According to the ideology and practice given in Yassawi’s “Hikmets”, the knowledge of the path to God involves the following stages: following the codes of Islamic law (Sharia); following the Sufi teachings (tarikat); approaching Allah (haqiqah); knowledge of religion (ma’arifat). These stages, which contribute to the purification of the soul and the approach to Allah, show that the violation of this sequence cannot lead to the achievement of “Haqiqat” (“Truth”). Each of the seven stages of the development of the soul, according to the Turkic Sufi, personifies the transition to a new state, which serves to purify it from worldly vices. The motivation for this transformation is an unbridled love for the Creator, which is expressed in the service of good. The leading force on the path to Truth is love. In the name of love for the Creator, a person must undergo ascetic trials in order to deserve union with Him. It is Allah who shows the way to reach the goal. To do this, one must accept death as the birth of a new life

Western Sufism: A Study on Historical and Models of Sufism in the West

The emergence of studies on Islamic mysticism or Sufism in the last few centuries, which reached its peak in the 20th century, shows that Sufism has progressed well in areas outside Islam. That is evidenced by the emergence of the Muslim community in the West, which adheres to the teachings of Sufism. This article aims to explore how the development of Sufism in the West focuses on two things (1) Examine the various theories of the introduction and early studies of Sufism in the West since the 17th century AD. (2) Assess the models and styles of Sufism that developed in the West, especially in the 20th century AD. This research is qualitative research using historical and philosophical analysis approaches. The research findings are (1) Western society's study of Sufism began in the 17th century and reached its peak in the 19th/20th centuries AD. It was marked by the many activities of translating Sufism texts. (2). In the 20th century AD, there were several models or styles of Sufism that developed in the Western world, namely hybrid Sufism, perennial Sufism, and transplant Sufism.

YASSAVITOLOGY AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY OF R.SYZDYK "THE LANGUAGE OF THE HIKMETS OF YASSAVI "

The article analyzes Yassawi research and research conducted by the scientist Rabiga Syzdyk in this direction, including the importance and role of the study «Yassawi Hikmetterinin tili» (The Language of the Hikmets of Yassavi) in science. The author reveals their essence using such concepts as «Yassavitology, Sufism, The Language of Hikmets, Tariqat. The tradition, experience of Sufi teaching, as well as the analysis and study of the conclusions of researchers belong to a very urgent problem in terms of the spiritual and religious needs of Kazakh Society of the XXI century, their recognition, study, work with the original. The article aims to formulate and substantiate the scientific and theoretical basis and significance of this problem using the " The Language of the Hikmets of Yassavi ", to identify the features of the study. The research work uses methods of comparison, analysis, description and control, and gives examples from the language of "Hikmets". As a result, it was concluded that it is necessary to identify the features of oral and written speech traditions of the people of that period, their influence on the heritage of Yassavi, as well as to determine the difference and continuity between the old language and the Kazakh language based on specific materials, and in this regard, R.Syzdyk's research works can serve as a very important scientific basis.

Propagating the Concept of Rahmatan Lil ‘Aalamin through Suffistic Da’wah in East Kalimantan

Dawah plays a vital role in developing and disseminating Islam as it opens opportunities for Islamic teachings to be accepted and adapted in new environments with people from different cultures. In this context, Sufi preaching is one of the successful manifestations in the propagation of Islam due to its flexible nature, which is its characteristic feature. Therefore, this research aims to examine and identify the role of preaching in developing Sufism in East Kalimantan, particularly in the current era of globalization. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research approach, with research locations spread across several areas in East Kalimantan, including Samarinda, Kutai Kartanegara, Balikpapan, Kutai Timur, Bontang, and Paser. The research results indicate that the current societal conditions closely related to technological advancements and information necessitate the presence of more relevant forms of preaching. In this context, da'is are obliged to use digital media to convey Sufi teachings. They are expected to be proficient in utilizing technology to continue delivering their preaching in line with the progress of the times.

Menanamkan Wawasan Islam Moderat Melalui Pendidikan Akidah Ahlussunnah Wal Jama’ah An-Nahdiyah: Belajar dari Pendidikan Pesantren

Fostering moderation of Islam in the era of disruption is very urgent to face a multicultural society. Correct understanding of aqidah is the main key to maintaining inter-religious tolerance. Aqidah ahlussunah wal jama'ah an-nahdliyyah developed in Islamic boarding schools has succeeded in creating a moderate society. The results of this study indicate that moderate Islamic insight is built on aqidah ahlussunah wal jama'ah an-nahdliyyah education. This Aqidah is then synergized with the teachings of Tawhid, Fiqh, Morals and Sufism. The tradition of Islamic scholars' thought in the archipelago also contributes to strengthening moderate Islamic insights

Demak Sufism: Moderation of the Java Islamization in XVI Century In the Study of The Manuscript of Suluk Syeh Bari

Islamization of the archipelago, especially in Java, took place peacefully in Demak period of the XV - XVI centuries. The retribution of walisanga with its sufism teachings was able to embrace Javanese mysticism in the embrace of Islam. The realization of this attitude of peace (penetration pacifique) without conflict shows that sufism has played an attitude of moderation such as appreciation, tolerance, and inclusive attitude so as to attract the sympathy of Hindu-Javanese mystics into Islam. This paper is intended to reveal how Islamic moderation occurs in Demak, for it is studied by an authentic Sufi manuscript published by Demak written by Sunan Bonang under the title Suluk Syeh Bari. This manuscript is studied using the content analysis method by prioritizing the concept of moderation. This study concludes that Suluk Syeh Bari by Sunan Bonang is the foundation for the teachings of moderate Islamic Sufism since the beginning of Islamization in Java. His moderation teachings include 1) inclusive attitudes in the spirit of divinity, 2) perfection of the soul, realizing noble, wise, and open minded. 3) Open attitude and tolerance towards others through the teachings of Sufism, Ridlo, and always happy. 4) Respect religious acculturation. This attitude will be inherited by his two students, namely Sunan Kalijaga and Syeh Siti Jenar, who gave birth to acculturative Islam (Islam of the archipelago).

Al-Ghazali's Concept of Happiness in The Alchemy of Happiness

Al-Ghazali's book entitled The Alchemy of Happiness describes happiness. It often becomes a reference of behavior of mysticism and psychology, especially Islamic psychology. However, there are no studies that specifically examine this book. This study analyzes al-Ghazali's concept of happiness in The Alchemy of Happiness. The research data sources consist of literature having The Alchemy of Happiness as their main references. The researcher uses the content analysis method to analyze the data. The research results show that (1) Al-Ghazali's concept of happiness refers to the Qur'an, Hadīths, Islamic philosophy, Sufism teachings, and al-Farabi’s leadership concept. (2) Al-Ghazali's principle of happiness is twofold: that happiness must be pursued and tiered. Al-Ghazali's concept of happiness consists of four aspects: appetence, reason, heart, and love for Allah. (3) Furthermore, the method of achieving happiness has three stages, (1) recognizing the nature and character of the self, (2) placing the heart as the leader of the self, and (3) contemplation of God. Al-Ghazali's concept of happiness has several advantages, namely use many Quarnic references; does not eliminate the potential for lust; and does not teach fatalism. In fact, he motivates people to pursue their happiness.

Sufi Teaching from the point of the Neural Network Theory view of the Noosphere

At present, the issue of updating the philosophical and religious doctrines to determine the value-semantic coordinates of the socio-cultural code is gaining more and more scientific and social importance. In historical retrospect, the teachings of the Sufis were and still are of great importance, since they had a pronounced impact on the formation of the cultural characteristics of the peoples who inhabited a vast geographical area from Altai to the Crimea. This paper shows that the teachings of the Sufis can be interpreted using modern achievements in neuroscience. The authors of the article substantiate that the teaching of the Sufis from the point of view of the neural network theory of the noosphere is a tool for the system-directed formation of a sociocultural code that fully takes into account the specifics of the object of application of efforts. The methodology of this approach is based on the neural network theory of the noosphere, which allows us to interpret the concept of "sociocultural code" from the standpoint of both the humanities and the natural sciences. On the basis of narrative sources, the idea is revealed that the spiritual, moral, ideological value of the Sufi teachings is preserved at the present time. The peculiarity of the ongoing research (this article is being carried out within the framework of the project) is the possibility of forming an axiological basis for mobilizing the spiritual determinants of the past, the collective ideas of the people. On a new round of historical development, the most promising is the harmonious combination of the heritage of our ancestors with modern achievements in science, technology, and digital civilization. It is essential that the arguments presented in the paper are verifiable, since the neural network theory is essentially a mathematical model that operates on calculable and measurable data. The practical significance of the work lies in the fact that the teachings of the Sufis from the point of view of the neural network architecture are elements of the socio-cultural code that can be used in the system of spiritual and moral values of the nation's intellectual renewal. The Role of Kyai Abdullah Sadjad's Sufism Education on the Spiritual Success of the Jama'at Thariqat Mulya Jati - Jati Mulya

This study aims to determine the role of Sufism education taught by Kyai Abdullah Sadjad on the spiritual success of the tariqat Mulya Jati-Jati Mulya congregation. The research method used in this research is a qualitative approach and a descriptive method. Descriptive qualitative research is a research method that seeks to describe the object under study objectively, and aims to systematically describe the facts and characteristics of the object as well as the frequency of the researched accurately. Data analysis was carried out through several stages, namely data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The results of this study explain that the Sufism education taught by Kyai Abdullh Sadjad provides an important role for the spiritual success of the congregation of tariqat Mulya Jati-Jati Mulya. This is evidenced by the acknowledgment of several informants, that the changes in their morals during Kyai Abdullah Sadjad's Sufism education are increasingly being istiqomah in worship, always husnudhon, and tawakal. Thus, it can be concluded that Kyai Abdullah Sadjad's Sufism education has an important role in building the spiritual success of the tariqat Mulya Jati-Jati Mulya congregation. So that the existence of spiritual stability in each individual will not cause loss of vision of divinity, emptiness of soul and various other spiritual ailments.

Sufis And Women: The Study of Women’s Sufis In The Western World

The lack of records about the involvement and contribution of women in Sufism texts cannot be used as an excuse that women have a small role and position in the development and dissemination of Sufism teachings, doctrines, and practices. Of the two female Sufi names, namely Rabi’ah and Aishah al-Ba’uniyyah, two big names prove that women have equal opportunities in achieving spiritual knowledge. Therefore, the writer is interested in female Sufis, especially in Western countries, where so far, many writers have focused on female Sufis in the eastern world, therefore it is very interesting to study female Sufis in the Western world and to answer questions. about; Aren’t their women in the world of Sufism? Is it true that the world of Sufism belongs entirely to men only? This paper is a paper using a qualitative descriptive approach. The author uses a literature review with the data sources used in this paper are secondary data originating from the literature such as books, journals, articles, and various sources relevant to the theme of the discussion in this paper. The results of the study describe female Sufis, namely Hajjah Amina Adil and Hajjah Naziha Adil with their organization called HNCO (Hajjah Naziha Charitable Organization) engaged in philanthropy. Then another female Sufi is Nahid Angha who is known as one of the founders of the International Sufi Woman Organization, a world Sufi women’s organization. This organization is concerned with peace programs and women’s empowerment.
