Career Paths and Curriculum Relevance of Master of Arts in Home Economics Education Graduates: A tracer Study

The study was conducted to trace the graduates of the Master of Arts in Home Economics Education from SY 2010-2023. Thirty-nine out of forty-three graduates participated in the study at workplaces in Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Davao de Oro, and abroad. A survey questionnaire patterned from the CHED Graduate Tracer Study with some modifications was used to collect information and sent through Google Forms, messenger, and email. The collected information was tabulated and analyzed, and the information was presented in the form of tables and graphs. Information from the socio-demographic and educational profile was presented as graphs and tables. The Likert scale was used to analyze the curriculum and work-skill-related factors. The study's results revealed that the MAHEED graduates comprised primarily of married women between 31-35 years old. Most remained as MAHEED graduates and did not pursue a PhD program. The primary reason for pursuing the MAHEED program is for promotion. Most of them are NC2, NC3, and TM TESDA holders. Most of them work regularly in the Department of Education as Teacher II. The curriculum-related factors were rated very relevant, with the major courses ranked first in relevance to the employability and promotion of MAHEED graduates. The work-related factors were also rated very relevant, with critical thinking ranked first in relevance to the employability and promotion of MAHEED graduates.

The purpose of this study is to examine home economics teachers' perception and practice of good instruction according to teacher developmental stages, and to explore what efforts and supports are needed for good instruction. For this purpose, total of 6 home economics teachers were interviewed in depth by selecting 2 people from each development stage: adaptation stage, growth/development stage and mastery stage. Data were interpreted through analytical memo writing, initial coding, in-depth coding, and categorization. The results of the study are as follows. First, teachers in the ‘adaptation stage’ strive to break away from the fantasy of teaching skills. Teachers in the ‘growth/development stage’ continue to think in order to create good instruction with their own teaching style. Teachers in the ‘mastery stage’ constantly struggle to move for good instruction based on a firm curriculum identity. Second, They all think that the direction of good instruction is to be faithful to the essence of home economics education. Good instruction is reorganized to focus on a compositional perspective and connect with the lives of students. Third, In order to teach good instruction, home economics teachers need to make efforts to expand ‘teacher agency’. Forth, What is absolutely necessary to continue good instruction is the solidarity of home economics teachers. They need support to build solidarity. This study is expected to be a starting point to revitalize various discourses about the direction and practice of good home economics instruction in the future.

가정학 질적연구의 방법론적 양상 및 동향 분석

This trend research study aims to analyze qualitative home economics studies based on qualitative research methodologies, paradigms of qualitative research, topics, and methods. A total of 135 qualitative studies in the field of home economics, conducted since 2000, were selected for analysis in this research. In regard of the qualitative research methodologies, ‘data-qualitative research’ with the characteristics of ‘the case of explaining the justification of qualitative data’ were the most found, followed by ‘methodqualitative research’ and ‘qualitative-qualitative research’. In research, the basic qualitative study with interpretivism approach was the most common. Teachers were often chosen as research participants because many researchers were teachers themselves. Most studies used individual interviews for data collection, and inductive coding was the main method of analysis. However, about half of the studies did not address validity or research ethics. The findings suggest that ‘qualitative-qualitative research’ needs to be developed in home economics studies through in-depth exploration and reliability of qualitative research paradigm, methodological aspect, and consideration for research ethics. Additionally, future research should investigate experiences and phenomena through the lens of critical theory, aligning with the mission of home economics education to examine critical science perspectives in practice.perspectives in practice.

This study aims to compare the 2015 and 2022 home economics education curricula using a language network analysis, examining changes in core keywords and major topics between these two periods. Keywords from middle and high school home economics curriculum documents of both periods were used to construct language networks, analyzed using centrality measures and topic modeling. The results follow. First, the core keywords of the middle school 2015 revised home economics curriculum were ‘family’, ‘health’, ‘problem’, and ‘solution’, and the core keywords of the 2022 revised home economics curriculum were ‘life’, ‘choice’, ‘environment’, ‘routine’, and ‘change’. In addition, a comparison of six topics extracted by both periods revealed that the 2015 revised curriculum dealt with the contents related to ‘family’ and subject competency (practical problem-solving ability) as core elements, while the 2022 revised curriculum emphasized changes in living environment, daily life, and sustainable choices. Secondly, the core keywords of the high school 2015 revised home economics curriculum were ‘family’, ‘life’, ‘safety’, and ‘problem’, and the core keywords of the 2022 revised home economics curriculum were ‘living’, ‘family’, ‘culture’, ‘life’, and ‘welfare’. An examination of the five topics extracted by both periods confirmed that the emphasis on ‘family’ and ‘safety’ decreased and the influence of content related to life culture, digital environment, and life welfare increased in the 2022 revised curriculum. This study is essential in providing foundational data for developing the next curriculum and offers insights into subject competency, teaching and learning methods, and evaluation.

Analysis of Factors Influencing Elective Course Selection and Exploration of Strategies to Revitalize Elective Courses in High School Home Economics: Insights from Focus Group Interviews with Home Economics Teachers

As the implementation of the high school credit system and the 2022 revised curriculum approaches, it is crucial to explore specific directions for the future of home economics elective courses. Therefore, this study aims to draw implications for the direction of home economics elective courses by identifying factors that influence high school students’ choices, with a focus on insights from home economics teachers. Furthermore, we aim to investigate strategies that can be used to encourage students to choose home economics elective courses. To accomplish the objectives of this study, we analyzed previous research on course selection factors and conducted focus group interviews (FGI) with seven home economics teachers. As a result, we identified a total of 20 factors that influence students' selection of the home economics elective courses, including "personal preference for the subject", "personal excellence in the subject", "recommendations from friends or seniors", "recommendations from parents", and "recommendations from homeroom teachers". A total of 22 strategies to promote the selection for home economics elective courses were identified through the FGI and presented across different levels: (1) support from home economics teachers and students, (2) the home economics and academic society, and (3) within the school. The findings of this study can serve as foundational research for analyzing the preference of high school students when selecting home economics elective courses. It can also provide a basis for exploring ways to revitalize the selection of newly introduced home economics elective courses in the 2022 revised curriculum, suggesting insights for the development of future home economics curriculum and elective courses.

Development of a Home Economics Education Program for the Consumer Life Area to Enhance Artificial Intelligence Literacy in Middle School Students

This study aims to develop and validate a home economics education program focused on the consumer life area to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) literacy. To achieve this objective, a 10-session AI-consumer life integration education program was developed by analyzing literature on AI Literacy, AI curriculum, consumer education, and the home economics curriculum for the middle school consumer life area. The program’s validity was assessed by nine teachers using a four-point Likert scale. The average scores for each item and the content validity index (CVI) were calculated. Based on expert feedback, the program was revised and improved accordingly. The expert validity assessment of the lesson plans, teaching materials and learning resources resulted in an average score of 3.78 for all items and an average CVI of 0.96. For the overall program, the expert validity assessment yielded an average score of 3.72 for all items and an average CVI of 0.97. Since the content validity index for all questions was above 0.78, the program demonstrated high validity across achievement standards integration, learning objectives, content and teaching methods, motivation, and volume areas. This confirms its effectiveness as an educational program for enhancing AI literacy. This study is significant in terms of defining and identifying the components of AI literacy, developing an AI-integrated program encompassing the entire consumer life area and confirming the suitability of the home economics curriculum for enhancing digital consumer competencies and promoting sustainable consumption. Additionally, it highlights the potential to integrate AI into the home economics and consumer life area.

Effect of cognitive behavior-aided counseling on entrepreneurial self-efficacy of students of home economics education in South-East Nigeria.

Raising potential entrepreneurs to advance the economy of nations through education has been projected by scholars. On the contrary, Nigerian students lack the enthusiasm and internal force to pursue the aims enshrined in their courses of study. Rather they prefer white-cola jobs to the entrepreneurial intention of the institutions. Given this reason, we tested the effect of cognitive behavior-aided counseling on entrepreneurial self-efficacy of students of Home Economics in South-East Nigeria. This is a pretest and posttest with a follow-up group randomized control design. A total of 119 Home Economics Education students from Universities and Colleges of Education were measured and screened using an entrepreneurial self-efficacy scale and inclusion criteria. Data collected from the pretest, post-test, and follow-up test were statistically analyzed using repeated measures of Analysis of Variance statistical method. The effect size of the cognitive behavior-aided counseling intervention on entrepreneurial self-efficacy was reported using partial eta square. The follow-up data was tested using a Univariate analysis. The result showed that cognitive behavior-aided counseling intervention had a significant effect on entrepreneurial self-efficacy among the Universities and Colleges of Education in South-East Nigeria. A follow-up result also showed that intervention had a significant effect on participants' entrepreneurial self-efficacy.

Evaluating the Impact of Home Economics Teachers' Entrepreneurial Activities on Family Economic Stability and Well-Being in Northeast Nigeria

This study examines the impact of entrepreneurial activities of Home Economics teachers on family economic stability and well-being in Northeast Nigeria. Home Economics, as a field, encompasses various disciplines such as nutrition, home management, and consumer education, aiming to improve the quality of life for individuals and families. In Northeast Nigeria, Home Economics teachers often engage in entrepreneurial activities, leveraging their expertise to supplement their income and enhance their families' economic stability. This study evaluates the extent to which these entrepreneurial endeavors contribute to family income, food security, and overall quality of life. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from Home Economics teachers across Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe states. A sample of 200 teachers was selected through multistage sampling. The study employed both descriptive and inferential statistics to analyze the data, including paired samples t-tests and W-statistics to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings reveal that entrepreneurial activities significantly enhance family economic stability and well-being. Teachers engaged in ventures such as catering, textile and fashion businesses, and home management consultancy experienced notable improvements in family income, food security, and overall quality of life. The study underscores the importance of supporting entrepreneurial initiatives among Home Economics teachers to foster economic resilience and social development in the region. The results provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and community leaders to integrate entrepreneurial education within the Home Economics curriculum, thereby promoting sustainable development in Northeast Nigeria.

This study aims to explore the knowledge structure of the field of home economics education. To achieve this, the knowledge network of the field of home economics education was analyzed using social network analysis on 758 articles published between 2004 and 2023, focusing on those in the Journal of Home Economics Education Research. The main findings of the study are as follows: First, the knowledge network exhibited charac teristics of a small-world network. Papers on children, family, and career maturity significantly influenced the knowledge structure. Second, the knowledge structure is centered around the home economics subject and curriculum and is organized into four groups. A temporal analysis revealed that the influence of core keywords such as perception, content, unit, home economics teachers, practice, behavior, and influence has decreased, while the influence of curriculum, textbook, and development has shown a trend of increasing. Third, the sub-knowledge structures were identified as seven categories. The study found that the influence of ‘perception and demand for home economics education’ is decreasing, whereas the influence of ‘home economics curriculum and textbooks’ and ‘application of home economics teaching and learning process’ is increasing. Additionally, ‘adolescent self-esteem and family relationships’ and ‘home economics curriculum and textbooks’ were found to be the most influential in the knowledge structure of home economics education. This research is significant as it demonstrates the temporal changes in the core keywords and sub-structures of the knowledge structure within the field, thereby providing a foundation for understanding and expanding the research knowledge structure in the field of home economics education.

This study employs photovoice research methodology to investigate adolescents’ experiences in sibling relationships and to analyze the impact of sibling interactions on their development and growth. The participants comprised eight high school students with one sibling (four males and four females) residing in the Incheon region. The research process encompassed several stages: participant recruitment, orientation, photovoice activity (focus group interviews), data analysis, and conclusion derivation. During the photovoice activity, participants engaged in a narrative process of photographing, interpreting, and discussing their experiences. The narratives were categorized into four primary themes: structure and environment, emotional interactions, roles, and parental subsystems. The conclusions drawn from the study are as follows: First, the similarity formed in sibling relationships during adolescence contributes to psychological stability. Second, roles and expectations based on birth order can cause stress for adolescents, indicating the need for equitable role adjustments within the family. Third, conflict in sibling relationships is crucial for enhancing problem-solving and social relationship skills. Lastly, consistent parenting attitudes significantly affect the emotional well-being of siblings. This study emphasizes the significance of fostering a deeper understanding of human development and family relationships through an exploration of adolescent sibling dynamics within home economics education.

This study examined the trends in home economics education research across different curriculum periods and journals. A total of 374 papers related to the 2009, 2015, and 2022 revised curricula were selected and analyzed using network analysis from four journals. First, research trends were analyzed by curriculum period. Keyword frequency analysis revealed that articles on the 2009 and 2015 revised curricula primarily focused on analyzing the curriculum to develop textbooks or programs. In contrast, papers on the 2022 revised curriculum explored broader directions. Topic modeling results highlighted the prominent topics for each period: ‘environmental education’ in the 2009 revised curriculum, ‘safety and health education’ in the 2015 revised curriculum, and ‘ecological transition’ in the 2022 revised curriculum. Second, research trends were analyzed by journal. Keyword frequency analysis by journal exposed specific research tendencies. For example, in the Journal of Home Economics Research, ‘perceptions of practical classes’ and ‘analysis of safety textbooks’ were major topics for the 2009 revised curriculum, while ‘teaching and learning plans for competence development’ dominated research on the 2015 revised curriculum. This study demonstrates that the concepts and goals emphasized in curriculum revisions are reflected in the corresponding research.

Exploring the Relationship between Home Economics Competencies and Financial Literacy among High School Learners

This study examined the relationship between Home Economics Competencies and Financial Literacy among high school learners, focusing on Grade 7 learners at Davao City National High School. Employing a descriptive correlational research design, the research utilized a survey method to collect data, with the sample selected through simple quota sampling. The survey measured learners ' competencies in various aspects of Home Economics, including practical skill application, integration of theoretical knowledge with practical execution, and adaptability to changing household dynamics, alongside their understanding and management of financial literacy. Statistical analysis of the data involved calculating mean scores, Pearson-r correlation, and conducting regression analysis. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between Home Economics competencies and financial literacy (R: 0.59, p<0.05). Regression analysis further demonstrated the impact of specific components of Home Economics education on financial literacy levels. These results suggest that proficiency in Home Economics is closely linked to financial literacy, indicating that comprehensive education in Home Economics could enhance learners ' financial understanding and capabilities. The study highlights the importance of integrating Home Economics and financial education to equip learners with essential life skills for their future.

Development and Validation of a Global Citizenship Education Teaching-Learning Plan and its Effects on Fostering the Global Citizenship Competencies of Elementary School Students

The objectives of this study were to develop, implement a home economics education teaching-learning plan and assess its effects to enhance global citizenship competencies among upper elementary school students. The ADDIE model was employed for learner needs analysis, instructional design, development and implementation. This was followed by assessments of global citizenship competencies and class satisfaction. Based on an analysis of the core ideas associated with an area of "Living Environment and Sustainable Choice," four practical problems were designed: What actions should I take for the rational management of living resources? What actions should I take to ensure consciousness of the need to respect diversity in daily life? What actions should I take to maintain a safe and healthy living environment? What actions should I take to make sustainable choices? Based on these four practical problems, four lesson topics were developed in accordance with both the voyeur's and the critical perspectives, resulting in a total of 8 sessions. The subsequent delivery of an 8-session class on global citizenship education in home economics yielded significant improvements in the global citizenship competencies (knowledge, skills, attitudes, and willingness to act) of 37 elementary school students immediately after the sessions. The significance of this study lies in its focus on the core ideas of the revised 2022 curriculum, thereby offering directions for the development of global citizenship education within the curriculum.

Home Economics in Higher Education 1945–1955: The Academic Home Economics Education at Aarhus University and the Emergence of a Female Figure

In 1945, Aarhus University established the first advanced courses in home economics within the Nordic countries. This reflected the idea of a modern university that provided the blueprint for Aarhus University. However, hidden in the archives are various controversies surrounding the establishment of the courses. Based on 17 applications from 17 women educated within home economics, this article paints a picture of the women who chose to enrol in the academic courses in home economics, as well as the background for its development and the negotiations that took place around higher education for women within the field of domestic services. Sara Ahmed’s figures of “the stranger” and “the willful subject” provide a theoretical foundation for examining which female figures emerged due to the early academicisation of a professional education programme for women. By drawing on these figures, the article concludes that a specific female figure emerged as a bridging figure linking notions of the housewife and the female academic.

Transition to Post-Pandemic Education: Teaching Strategies of Tle Teachers in Secondary Public Schools

This study explored the teaching strategies of Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) course in Cluster 5, Davao City. There were eight (8) home economics teachers who participated in the study. This study made use of a phenomenological approach to extract the ideas of the parent participants. The participants were purposely selected as representatives from the group of home economics teachers from schools in the same division. The in-depth-interview was employed to gather some information as regards to their respective experiences on the transition of their classes from blended learning to the new face to face classes during the post pandemic school year. Using the thematic analysis, the following themes emerged as pertains to the teaching strategies that were most effective for students during the post pandemic time, these are: the most effective teaching strategies in their TLE classes were demonstration method, lecture method and solving common problems. The challenges of the teachers were: the lack of funds, lack of practical strategies and lack of qualified teachers. The suggested teaching strategies to facilitate the students learning was to improve communication and improvement of their collaboration with stakeholders. The Technology and Livelihood Education teachers may be more proactive in implementing the course to their learners. The teachers may be more attentive to the needs and predicaments of their learners and other stakeholders, thus creating the harmonious learning environment.

A Proposed Educational Program Based on Project-Based Learning (PBL) for Teaching Home Economics and its Impact on Developing Creative Thinking and Problem-solving Skills of Third-grade Intermediate Female Students

This study examined the effectiveness of using project-based learning (PBL) for the teaching of home economics and determine its impact on the development of students’ creative thinking and problem-solving skills. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researchers used the quasi-experimental approach. Pre- and post-intervention tests were conducted with two (experimental and control) groups of third-grade intermediate female students. Two tests were administered: one to test the students’ creative thinking skills, and the other to test their problem-solving skills. The control group were taught a home economics unit by conventional teaching methods; the experimental group were taught using the PBL approach. The following materials and tools have been prepared by the researchers: a proposed educational program based on project-based learning (PBL), a test of creative thinking skills, and a test of problem-solving skills. The findings revealed that there were statistical differences (0.05) between the mean scores for the pre-PBL and post-PBL tests, indicating that PBL significantly improved the students’ creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Several recommendations and suggestions are offered based on the findings.

NARRATIVE REVIEW OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) INTEGRATION IN NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ HOME ECONOMICS INSTRUCTION

This paper explores how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can revolutionize Home Economics education in Nigeria, particularly at secondary schools. ICT integration aligns with national policy goals of introducing students to technology and enhancing professional skills in Home Economics. Students can access a wealth of online resources, improving their knowledge of nutrition, healthy living, and sustainable home management. However, challenges like limited internet access, lack of ICT facilities, and inadequately trained teachers impede progress. Overcoming these hurdles requires collaboration. The government can invest in teacher training and infrastructure development, while schools can explore cost-effective solutions. Partnerships with communities and the private sector can further support ICT resource acquisition. The paper emphasizes the importance of teacher collaboration and localized digital content creation to enhance learning and cultural identity. By addressing challenges and implementing a multi-pronged approach, stakeholders can empower educators to leverage technology. Students equipped with both Home Economics knowledge and digital literacy skills will be prepared for the future, becoming informed consumers, responsible family members, and innovative contributors to society. Ultimately, ICT integration has the potential to transform Home Economics into a dynamic and engaging learning experience, empowering individuals and society to thrive in a technology-driven world

The purposes of this study are to obtain an in-depth understanding of the experiences of novice Home Economics teachers during their first year and to extract meaning from the experiences. The Photovoice was used as a research methodology. Participants in the study included three novice Home Economics teachers who passed the 2022 secondary school teacher recruitment examination and began working at middle schools in the Seoul metropolitan area from March 2022. Data were collected from February 2022 to January 2023, involving one written interview, nine monthly Photovoice projects, and two Focus Group Interviews. Thematic analysis was utilized for data analysis. The narratives of novice Home Economics teachers were divided into the narratives as ‘Home Economics teacher’ and as ‘Novice teacher’. As being Home Economics teachers, participants constructed their narratives around three themes: ‘Home Economics is a practical discipline’, ‘Home economics teachers are agents of change’, and ‘Home Economics is undervalued in the school.’ Furthermore, the sub themes of the ‘novice teachers’ narrative included ‘Now it's the real beginning’, ‘Teaching is a wonderful profession’, and ‘I will become a good teacher.’ The significance of this study lies in the in-depth exploration of the lived experiences of novice Home Economics teachers during their first year and broadening the use of Photovoice as a research and teaching strategy.

청소년의 관계형성역량 향상을 위한 가정과교육의 방향 탐색

The purpose of this study is to explore the direction of home economics education and provide specific implications to help adolescents develop relationship competency. For this purpose, the contents of Korea's character education and UK's relationships education curriculum were analyzed, and the results are as follows. Character education in Korea focused on character education values such as responsibility, respect, consideration, and communication throughout the public education system. These contents were largely consistent with the learning content elements for cultivating relationship-competency in home economics education. UK's relationships education at the primary and secondary levels were similar to that of home economics education in middle school in Korea in its goals and learning contents for understanding and maintaining healthy relationships. However, differences existed in areas of safe relationships, setting boundaries with others, comprehensiveness of sex education content, rights to refuse sex education, and education content based on equal rights. Based on these results, this study concludes that the concept of education on relationships needs to be defined, the composition of educational content should be systematically developed, and further research on the development of teaching and learning methods and learning programs that can elicit and internalize students' attitudes and changes is needed. In addition, insights were gained regarding additional educational contents and considerations to take into account.
