With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and its integration into education, the potential for enhancing English-speaking instruction has grown significantly. Traditional methods of teaching speaking to English-majored students often face challenges such as time constraints, limited access to native speakers, and varying levels of student proficiency. This study explores the auxiliary role of ChatGPT, a large language model, in assisting the development of speaking skills among English majors. By leveraging its natural language processing capabilities, the study aims to innovate teaching methods and provide learners with personalized, real-time practice opportunities. The article first outlines the technical features of ChatGPT and its applications in speaking instruction, including customized conversation practice, real-time interaction, and intelligent feedback. It also examines the current challenges of traditional speaking instruction, such as limited classroom time and the need for individualized feedback. Furthermore, the study discusses how ChatGPT can support teachers in providing scalable, interactive learning experiences. Finally, the article evaluates the effectiveness and feasibility of ChatGPT in enhancing speaking proficiency and highlights the potential future applications of AI tools in English language education. This research offers valuable insights into how AI can be integrated into language learning to address existing challenges and improve the overall teaching of speaking skills.

Effects of pedagogical intervention on Chinese EFL learners' use of motivational regulation strategies and oral English proficiency improvement

This study investigated the role of motivational regulation strategies (MRSs) in English as a foreign language (EFL) pedagogy, with a focus on Chinese university students. While prior research has explored MRSs, their specific impact on the oral proficiency of Chinese EFL learners remains under-examined. This mixed-methods research offers empirical insights, advocating for the integration of MRSs into EFL instruction to bolster students' oral proficiency. The study is bifurcated, with the first phase dedicated to cataloging MRSs' usage among Chinese university students and crafting the Speaking Strategies for Motivational Regulation Questionnaire (SSMRQ). This initial phase engaged 171 EFL students from a northern Chinese "211 project" university, employing convenience sampling. Factor analysis of participant responses culminated in a 15-item SSMRQ, spanning five dimensions: Environment Structuring (ES), Mastery Self-Talk (MST), Self-Consequating (SC), Self-Oriented Performance Self-Talk (SPST), and Externally-Oriented Performance Self-Talk (EPST). The second phase assessed the efficacy of MRSs-oriented instruction on student application of MRSs and oral English proficiency. This quasi-experimental study involved 22 consenting second-year English majors from the participating university. Data collection instruments encompassed the SSMRQ, oral English proficiency tasks, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews. The instructional intervention spanned four weekly 30-min sessions, targeting the five MRSs' dimensions and offering feedback on oral performance. Assessments were conducted pre- and post-intervention using the SSMRQ, oral tasks, and reflective journals. Six participants, selected based on their oral English performance, were interviewed in-depth. Results suggest that the instructional intervention had a significant effect on the students' use of MRSs and their oral English proficiency. The study offers pedagogical insights into EFL speaking instruction in the higher education context, underscoring the importance of personalized teaching strategies tailored to individual learner needs. Collectively, this research introduces the SSMRQ and elucidates the pedagogical merits of MRSs-based instruction on oral English proficiency, establishing an empirical base for subsequent inquiry and pedagogical advancement in language education.

The Development of English Public Speaking Teaching Material Based on Interpersonal Intelligence for Fifth Semester Students of English Education Department of Universitas Muslim Nusantara Al-Washliyah

This research aimed to describe the development, the validity, and the effectiveness of English public speaking based on interpersonal intelligence to overcome the difficulties. The method of this research was mixed qualitative and quantitative description research with test and questionnaire to collect the data. The object of this research was the 5A semester students at University of Muslim Nusantara Al-Washliyah. This research was carried out for 2 months. During this research the researcher found that public speaking material based on interpersonal intelligence can improve students’ public speaking ability in terms of self- confidence, mastering the topic, delivering the messages or ideas through verbal and non-verbal. The development material will make it easier for lecturer to teach public speaking and also be able to connect well between students and lecturer. Based on the research conducted, the result is the learning tools and the media developed are feasible to be used and applied in the learning process in the classroom with the final validation from material expert 87% and media expert 92,5%. Besides, the effectiveness of the learning method applied in this research shows the results of the calculation is 75% effective

Survey on English Speaking Anxiety of English Majors and Analysis of Teaching Countermeasures

This study examines the anxiety encountered by English major students during English speaking practice and explores effective pedagogical strategies to address it. A questionnaire survey was conducted among first-year English major students at a university in Chengdu, Sichuan, and data analysis was performed using SPSS 28.0 to evaluate the students' self-efficacy in English speaking. Findings indicate that a majority of students experience moderate levels of anxiety in spoken English expression, primarily due to fear of errors, non-conformity to language contexts, and self-imposed pressure. Such anxiety negatively impacts learning outcomes, manifesting as diminished confidence and interest. To counter these issues, a range of pedagogical strategies are suggested, including the transformation of teaching philosophies, enhancement of instructional methods, guidance for students in embracing mistakes as part of the learning process, and support in adjusting learning expectations. The study highlights the importance of creating a supportive classroom environment through active student participation and cooperative learning to alleviate anxiety. Additionally, timely feedback from educators is emphasized to foster students' confidence and a sense of accomplishment. The conclusion suggests that the implementation of targeted teaching strategies can significantly mitigate students' anxiety in English speaking and enhance their proficiency. This research offers actionable insights for improving English speaking instruction, with the potential to boost students' learning efficiency and motivation(Liu, M., & Xiangming, L., 2019).

With the remarkable strides in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, a range of sophisticated techniques and products have sprung forth, including speech recognition and semantic analysis. These advancements have propelled the application of AI to new heights, particularly in the realm of education. Notably, AI applications such as speech recognition, human-computer interaction, and automated evaluation have revolutionized traditional English speaking teaching, introducing unprecedented changes to the way students learn and interact. The paper aims to investigate how AI might enhance high school pupils' English-speaking proficiency, which employs a literature review methodology to examine and illustrate the smooth integration of AI technology with high school English speaking instruction. This approach enhances speaking learning materials and fosters creativity in teaching strategies and assessment techniques. In addition, it creates room for the evolution of the oral teaching style and broadens the learning environment. This intelligent transformation of the oral teaching mode is expected to effectively enhance the effectiveness of high school oral English teaching and ultimately improve students' language proficiency.

Development of Multimedia-Based Speaking Teaching Materials and its Influence on Junior High School Student Motivation

This research aims to develop multimedia-based speaking teaching materials and test their effect on junior high school students’ learning motivation. The research method used is qualitative research with a descriptive approach. The results of the research show that the use of multimedia-based speaking teaching materials is effective in increasing students’ interest in active participation and learning motivation. Multimedia is considered to be able to make learning more interesting, interactive and fun compared to conventional learning. These findings emphasize the important role of teachers in utilizing multimedia technology to create effective learning and can motivate students in speaking skills. Support from the school and other stakeholders is also needed to facilitate teachers in developing and implementing multimedia-based speaking teaching materials.

Accelerating EFL Learners’ Speaking and Listening Skills through the Audio-Lingual Teaching Method

Teaching English as a foreign language is a great challenge for EFL teachers in Indonesia because they are expected to be more creative and innovative in arousing students' attention during the learning-teaching process. The Audio-Lingual Method (ALM) is one of the teaching methods in foreign language learning that may be utilized in teaching speaking and listening skills. This conceptual article attempts to explore how ALM can accelerate EFL learners’ speaking and listening skills. Therefore, it discusses the concept of ALM, the strategy of ALM in learning speaking and listening skills, as well as the benefits of using ALM in learning language skills. A descriptive qualitative research approach with library research design was utilized to review and explore the concept, strategy, and benefits of using the ALM in accelerating EFL students’ speaking and listening skills. This method enables researchers to delve into relevant information and experts' perspectives on the ALM. In addition, it gains more insight into learning and teaching speaking and listening skills, and reviews the learning of speaking and listening skills using the ALM. The data were obtained from previous research findings, related articles, and documentation on the ALM. The data were qualitatively analyzed and comprehensively described the issues and provided valuable insights for all stakeholders in the field of education, including EFL teachers, students, school curriculum developers, and researchers.

ANALYZING TEACHING SPEAKING METHODS IN DIGITAL ERA

English is an international language used by all elements of world society and creates intense competition for every individual in the world in all aspects. To realize appropriate learning objectives, teaching speaking in English is no exception. The author aims to discover various teaching methods for students in the digital era and the problems encountered when teaching speaking in this digital era. The method used must also be appropriate for the student. This research uses a qualitative literature study design method. The data analysis used in this research reviews some literature related to a problem in this study published in the last five years (2019-2023). The findings from this research are audio-lingual, application of audio-visual, digital storytelling, debate, and using games that are relevant to be used in this digital era so that they are relevant. Then, the problems in teaching speaking are curriculum, lack of preparation in learning, and student anxiety. Every teacher must be able to recognize their students' level of ability, especially in speaking. So, the method chosen can help students to improve their speaking skills.

Through a qualitative research approach, the data was gathered from questionnaire and interviews. The findings reveal a variety of strategies utilized by teachers, ranging from communicative activities to technology integration. Additionally, factors influencing the selection and implementation of these strategies are examined. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of effective pedagogical practices in English speaking instruction, offering insights for educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers to enhance the quality of language education in Indonesian secondary schools.

Native speakerism crossing borders: comparing stakeholders’ attitudes towards English and Basque native and non-native teachers

Perceptions towards English native and non-native speaking teachers have drawn the attention of researchers in language acquisition. However, no study has examined its implications in the teaching of minority languages. This study aims to analyze 563 students’, parents’, and teachers’ attitudes and preferences towards English and Basque native and non-native teachers. Using questionnaires and group discussions, education stakeholders were questioned about their teacher preferences and their beliefs concerning assessment and support, attitudes, motivation, culture, and perceived linguistic abilities. Results revealed that education stakeholders appeared to assign concrete characteristics to native and non-native speaking teachers, regardless of the language under scrutiny.

The Effect of Bamboo Dancing Method on Students Speaking Ability at SMA Negeri 1 Siborongborong

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the method of bamboo dancing effectively in improving students speaking ability. This study applied in the class by experimental research. The population of this study was the students of the XI class at SMA Negeri 1 Siborongborong. The total of number of population was 139, and 40 students from the population were taken as the sample by using simple cluster sampling, then they divided into two groups. The first group as the experimental group was taught by applying bamboo dancing method, while the second groups as the control group was taught without applying bamboo dancing method. The instrument used for collecting the data was test in form oral test based on the materials that has been taught in treatment. The test were divided into two; pre-test and post-test. The mean of control group is 220 (11) is lower than the mean of experimental group is 500 (25). The reliability of the test was 0,68. Based on the data tobserved (5,01) is higher than the ttable (2,71) on df 38 at the level of significance (0,01). The result of this study show that teaching speaking by bamboo dancing method is more significant than that without applying bamboo dancing method.

The Effects of Task Based Speaking Instruction on Students’ Speaking Perception as Shambu Secondary School

Task-based speaking tasks offer significant benefits to students by providing opportunities to use the target language to convey meaning and engage with real-world topics and tasks. This approach allows students to draw upon their prior knowledge and background experiences to express opinions and ideas effectively. In line with this, the present study aims to investigate the effects of Task-Based Speaking Instruction (TBSI) on the speaking perceptions of students at Shambu Secondary School during speaking skill performances. To achieve this goal, two intact classes were selected from Shambu Secondary School. The treatment group underwent a twelve-week teaching program implementing TBSI, while the comparison group received conventional instruction as per usual practice. Data for this mixed-methods study were collected through speaking perception questionnaires, and both quantitative and qualitative analyses were employed. Quantitative analysis, utilizing ANCOVA, revealed that TBSI positively influenced students' English speaking perception, particularly in areas related to their speaking performances during English language learning. Furthermore, thematic analysis of interview data uncovered several themes highlighting the benefits of TBSI on students' perceptions of their speaking skills performance. In conclusion, the findings of this study have implications for various stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers. By recognizing the positive impact of TBSI on students' speaking perceptions, educators can consider integrating this approach into their teaching practices to enhance students' language learning experiences. Policymakers and curriculum developers are encouraged to support the implementation of TBSI in language education programs, thereby fostering the development of effective speaking skills among students.
