Abstract The author has labelled her new vocal sounds vocal multiphonics. The effect is one of producing more than one tone at a time. The intent of this research project was to find out what the vocal mechanism is doing to produce these sounds. This paper includes: Chapter I, a detailed linguistic analysis of the Vooss/chant, a multiphonic similar to the chord chant of certain Tibetan lamas which was analyzed by Kenneth Stevens, Huston Smith and R. Tomlinson, and Chapter II, an of the author's repertoire of vocal multiphonics. The author has attempted to describe how she learned to produce each sound and what the physiological components of each sound are. The following supplementary material is available: Taped Examples 1–24, referred to in Chapters I and II, including long examples of each of her vocal multiphonics. Taped Example 25, Molly, a four channel tape composition by Alexina Louie, employing the author's new vocal techniques. Shriek, a 16 mm sound film by Alan Johnson and the author.
