THE STUDY ON DETECTION OF DOT TILE AT CROSSROAD GUIDANCE BY WHITE CANE

Tactile walking surface indicators(TWSIs) were developed to help visually impaired people traveling alone, but TWSIs could be an extra barrier for pedestrians, wheelchair users and baby carriage users without visual impairment. The purpose of this study is to develop TWSIs of the height of bumps less than Japanese Industrial Standard(JIS)-type TWSIs. Especially, the subject of this study is guidance in indoor area for visually impaired people. We investigate the ease of detection and recognition of dot tile patterns which are different from the height(1mm,2mm) ,the diameter(20mm,30mm,40mm) and the number(64 pieces,113 pieces) of bumps by white cane. Participants are 12 persons with low vision and 2 totally blind persons. They wear eye mask in the experiment. The result in this study clear that it is possible to detect even the height of 1mm if there are 113 pieces of bumps.

To improve the problem of contrast described above, addition of lateral band to Tactile Walking Surface Indicators has been proposed. The persons with low vision capability sometimes misunderstand long objects on road surface as holes or ditches. As the first stage of the research, visibility of the lateral band of different color and width were experimentally measured by subjects with the persons with low vision capability.

Construction of an Evaluating System of Tactile Walking Surface Indicators for Persons with Vision Impairments

An experiment to evaluate a tactile walking surface indicator for visually impaired persons was usually carried out in the outdoor environment, and the weather and the seasons affected on the schedule and the result. We constructed the evaluation system within the building so we could conduct walking experiments that were unaffected by the weather regardless of the four seasons. The subjects of this system were not only a visually impaired person and a sighted deaf person but also general person. The laboratory provided a soundproof and shaded structure consisting of the walls and the ceiling. External sound and light were blocked. The hue could be adjusted by three-color fluorescent lamps, and the light could be adjusted from daytime brightness to a dim moon light. Research into the walking of visually impaired persons at nighttime is a pressing problem as the barrier-free transportation law has been enacted in Japan. An international standard has been discussed, and a scientific basis for that standard is now required.
