Quality and quantity of winter wheat varieties in 22 years’ time range

The Nagygombos experiments of the Szent Istvan University, Godollő, Hungary have always been a testing area for various agronomic technologies as well as a research site for evaluating the performance of crop varieties. The present paper is intended to give an overview of 18 winter wheat Triticum aestivum L. varieties tested during the time range between 1996 and 2018. All of the varieties were studied under similar agronomic conditions, each of them for min 3 years in a series of a polyfactorial replicated field trial. The 120 kg/ha N plant nutrition applications of the respective crop years were processed in the evaluation. Amount of grain yield, protein %, wet gluten content and farinographic values of the varieties examined were compared. The results obtained suggest, that most of the varieties had a rather high variation concerning yield figures, however protein and farinographic indicators proved to be more stable characteristics. Wet gluten content was influenced mainly by the crop year. The study may support a conclusion that certain varieties have shown a higher stability in technological quality manifestation regardless to the amount of their grain yield. Alfold 90, Yubileynaya 50, Mv Magdalena and Mv Toldi varieties proved to be the best quality varieties in this research series.

A sztereotípiák felgyorsítják a döntéseinket, értékítéletünket, hasonló folyamat tapasztalható a márkaválasztás során is.A Szent István Egyetem Agrár- és Gazdaságtudományi Karán – energiaitalokkal - végzett tesztek segítségével igazoltuk, hogy mind a márkák, mind pedig a „csomagolás” (szűkebben annak színe) hatással vannak a megkérdezettekre. A válaszokból kiderült, hogy ízletesebbnek tartják az ismertebb és jól pozícionált termékeket, valamint a megkérdezettek az általuk preferált színű poharukban szervírozott italokat kedvelték jobban.

Social media networking among university students at Szent István University

Over the last twenty years social media and networking have gained popularity and interest among the young, middle aged and elderly. It can be declared, however with caution, that it is the young who are connected to the social media the most. A current V4 no. 21820245 international research included a comprehensive focus group qualitative research on social media and trust building. Research was carried out in 6 focus groups at Szent Istvan University, in Godollő and Budapest, Hungary, in October, 2019. The study provides an answer to the issues of why students use social media, how important they find self-presentation, networking and informationseeking in the social media, how fun it is for them, and what dangers they need to be aware of. Most of the answers were well expected by the researchers, however, some of them were contrary to the expectations.

How the Planned V0 Railway Line Would Increase the Resilience of the Railway Network of Hungary Against Attacks

The development of the Moodle e-learning system started in 2002. Since it is an open source platform with a prominently rich functionality, the system has been introduced in more than 100,000 organisations worldwide in the last decade, including numerous Hungarian higher education institutions (Szent Istvan University, Obuda University, University of Pannonia) and many organisations in the public administration. We have been operating with one of the largest user (12,000 visitors daily) and course (more than 1,000 active courses per semester) numbers in Hungary, a Moodle based system since 2007 at the Corvinus University of Budapest (CUB) with a high level of user satisfaction.We managed a major, overall system improvement project at CUB in 2016. The development included a version upgrade to the newest Moodle 3, a full redesign, introduction of several new functions regarding the professors’ needs and core improvement on the system’s stability and security among others with a comprehensive load-impact test.In this paper, we discuss the success factors and pitfalls of the whole renewal process. We will further focus on analysing the group discussions with the major stakeholders and evaluate the comprehensive load-impact test. At the end of our paper, we will examine the state of the Moodle e-learning system at the National University of Public Service and we will propose elements of an improvement project relying on our recent experience at another university.

Synergy of robotics and ICT in the smart farming

There are many concept and technology to robotize in agriculture. The robotization has an intensive synergy with artificial intelligence (AI), information and communication technology (ICT) and sensor technology (ST). These technologies drive into the 4th revolution industry. The industrial processes help the automatization in agriculture. The demand for food products are growing, the working force getting old, these impacts forces the robot applications. This article introduce the robots in the agriculture, and the Szent Istvan University current research on the fields.

Primarily, fish meat could provide protein requirements for population so more and more attention must be paid to each sections of farming, for example fish transportation. A badly organized transportation technology can significantly reduce high quality stocks which were produced over several years. Deterioration of transport may occur on each fish distinctly. Bacterial or fungal diseases appear either immediately or days later. During our work, changes in several freshwater (peaceful or predator) fish species (of different ages) were monitored and analyzed during transport. There were two reasons why we examined the main physical and chemical parameters of the water. On one hand, we were curious to know how much the individuals exposed to heavy loads, which we tried to identify with some stress tests. On the other hand, we would develop a national water carrier monitoring system for the practice. Materials and methods Delivery technologies (foil sack and transport tankers) used in practice was applied in the experiment of the study in a real road transport. The physical and chemical data were monitored and checked with the use of multiparameter instruments and photometrial tests. Physiological and stress tests were analyzed from blood plasma of each fish, primarily plasma glucose determination was used. Results After analysis of examined fish species and each ages, it is obvious that either short or long delivery times we choose physical and chemical properties of the transport water would change dramatically, even adequate oxygen balance was ensured. Values of individuals exposed to stress were more significant compared to baseline values. Conclusion We could define concrete changes in key parameters of the transport water with the number of realtime transport implementation which is a good help to develop a new water monitoring system. Also, our results could help to clarify a number of practical issues (eg. what should be the starting water, lake water or well water etc). In the possession of concrete results, intervention modes can be specified and refined. Planning Agricultural Enterprises with the Integration of Environmental Effect Interaction and GHG Calculations

The clarification of the theoretical questions pertaining to the planning of agricultural enterprises is imperative in realizing the goals of the input-transformation-output relation. We also can not disregard pinning theory against actual use, meaning the inclusion of limitations in agricultural corporate practice. Scientifically well-prepared processes can go to waste if their limitations have not been evaluated as a result of the absence of information on implementation, theoretic unpreparedness, lack of motivation, or other various reasons. Therefore, in our analyses, we would also like to devote some time to the feasibility of planning and the outlining of planning methods useful for actual practice via actual plant inspections. During the planning phase, extreme difficulties may arise in the form of including environmental effects and making the impacts of the entrepreneur's decisions on the environment felt. Modeling these environmental and climate interactions and including them in planning models are the focus of this examination. The analyses were conducted at the Experimental Farm of Szent Istvan University in Hungary, which has served as the background of different plant economy analyses since 1992. Our experiences, including more than ten years of planning, preparation of decisions, and analysis in the experimental farm, allow us to draw many useful conclusions.

Hematologic and plasma biochemistry reference intervals of healthy adult barn owls (Tyto alba).

Hematologic and plasma biochemistry parameters of barn owls (Tyto alba) were studied in collaboration by the Exotic Division of the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the Szent Istvan University and the Eötvös Loránd University, both in Budapest, Hungary. Blood samples were taken from a total of 42 adult barn owls kept in zoos and bird repatriation stations. The following quantitative and qualitative hematologic values were determined: packed cell volume, 46.2 +/- 4%; hemoglobin concentration, 107 +/- 15 g/L; red blood cell count, 3.2 +/- 0.4 x 10(12)/L; white blood cell count, 13.7 +/- 2.7 x 10(9)/L; heterophils, 56.5 +/- 11.5% (7.8 +/- 2 x 10(9)/L); lymphocytes, 40.3 +/- 10.9% (5.5 +/- 1.9 x 10(9)/L); monocytes, 1.8 +/- 2.1% (0.3 +/- 0.3 x 10(9)/ L); eosinophils, 1 +/- 1% (0.1 +/- 0.1 x 10(9)/L); and basophils, 0.6 +/- 0.5% (0.1 +/- 0.1 x 10(9)/L). The following plasma biochemistry values also were determined: aspartate aminotransferase, 272 +/- 43 U/L; L-gamma-glutamyltransferase, 9.5 +/- 4.7 U/L; lipase, 31.7 +/- 11.1 U/L; creatine kinase, 2228 +/- 578 U/L; lactate dehydrogenase, 1702 +/- 475 U/L; alkaline phosphatase, 358 +/- 197 U/L; amylase, 563 +/- 114 U/L; glutamate dehydrogenase, 7.5 +/- 2.5 U/L; total protein, 30.6 +/- 5.3 g/L; uric acid, 428 +/- 102 micromol/L; and bile acids, 43 +/- 18 micromol/L. These results provide reliable reference values for the clinical interpretation of hematologic and plasma biochemistry results for the species.

Poučevanje digitalizacije na Madžarskem: primer

ABSTRACTPurpose: The paper aims to present experience in digitisation education at the Hungarian School of Library and Information Science and to indicate various problematic issues and challenges that have arisen. To overcome a part of these problems it is useful to rely on the experience of similar digitisation projects and education programmes in Hungary and abroad.Methodology/approach: Besides presenting the digitisation education programmeat the Szent Istvan University in Jaszbereny, a review of digitisation projects and digital libraries is given. Details about Hungarian digital resources are provided.Results: Seven-year experience in the project-based digitisation education incorporated in the LIS programme at the Szent Istvan University, Hungary shows many similarities with courses and programs offered by other European universities. The most serious challenge is to make the education based on real-life tasks.Research limitation: The results of one type of course work have been studied.Originality/practical implications: Building a digital library in a small country encounters the same problems as the one presented in the study which puts digitisation into a context, comparable to other European projects.

Abstracts and Abstracting: A Genre and Set of Skills for the Twenty-First Century

Reading abstracts is part of the usual routine for reference librarians, especially those employed in health sciences and academic settings. The importance of abstracts to knowledge transfer and to the library and information science field is overlooked and deserves review. This book is written to fill a void in recent English-language books on this important subject. Tibor Koltay is a library and information science professor in the Faculty of Applied and Professional Arts, Szent Istvan University, Jaszbereny, Hungary. Koltay approaches the topic of abstracts and abstracting as both a literary genre and a process. The author intends the book for an interdisciplinary audience: professional abstractors, researchers who publish in scholarly journals, linguists, and language arts teachers. Librarians would also benefit from this book, especially those serving scholarly writers, researchers, and the higher education community. Koltay discusses theoretical interdisciplinary underpinnings of abstracting along with chapters on the practical skill and knowledge needed to write good abstracts. Koltay theorizes that there are three types of abstracts: the frequently used informative abstract that summarizes important methods and findings contained in the article, the indicative abstract that describes the content but does not report data in the article, and abstracts that are both indicative and informative. Librarians who love to read theoretical discussions will find much here to keep them absorbed, but the theoretical chapters can be skipped or skimmed to focus on more practical discussions, such as what exactly an abstractor has to know and what the process of writing abstracts is. A discussion of the limitations of author abstracts (those written by the author of a manuscript) versus those of professional abstractors and the connection to information literacy and database searching are among the many useful discussions. Koltay seems familiar with the North American library scene, quoting information literacy standards of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), and the use of familiar databases such as EBSCOhost's Academic Search Premier. A chapter with examples and discussion is also provided. American readers will need to adjust to British spellings and didactic style, and forge ahead through acronyms that are not always explained or found in the index. After working through these limitations, readers will find that this book contains useful, well-documented knowledge that can be used to help authors write better abstracts and can be used in teaching the scholarly publishing process. The book can be used as a self-help guide to learn the abstracting process and could be used in library and information science courses, but the cost may be prohibitive. This book is recommended for academic libraries, especially those supporting graduate programs and researchers who publish, but is optional for the typical hospital and public library.

The impact of different tillage systems and nutrient levels on the biomass and Brix values of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench)

The biomass and Brix content of sweet sorghum was investigated in 2009 and 2010 to determine the most suitable tillage and fertilization treatments. The experiment was carried out at the Biomass Utilization and Crop Production Demonstration Centre of Szent Istvan University. Both humus content and nitrogen (N) supply of the topsoil was insufficient. In 2009, which was a typical drought year, the yields ranged from 12.14 t/ha (direct drilling) to 56.11 t/ha (ploughing). There were significant differences between the tilled and non-tilled plots. In 2010 as in 2009, the highest yield of 63.52 t/ha was measured in case of ploughing, however cultivating and disk harrowing treatments showed similar biomass results. This study indicates that fertilizers had a significant effect on yields, as in both years highest biomass was obtained at 100 kg ha-1nitrogen rate. The highest Brix values were measured in 2009 (18.21%) and in 2010 (9.01%) in case of cultivation treatments. In the examination years, direct drilling showed the lowest results for biomass and also regarding Brix values. The results demonstrate that the fertilisation and suitable tillage is very important in the cultivation of sweet sorghum. Key words: Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), tillage, biomass, Brix.

Frenyó1 and Attila Zsarnovszky1 1 Szent Istvan University , Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Hungary 2 Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Genecology, United States Introduction: We have previously determined the distribution pattern of ecto-nucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 3 (NTPDase3) in the rat brain and found that the hypothalamus is one of the brain regions richest in NTPDase3-immunoreactive (IR) neuronal structures. Next, we characterized the cellular and subcellular localization of NTPDase3-IR. Immunoprecipitate was found in distinct subcellular profiles, most importantly in mitochondria of hypothalamic excitatory neurons. Functional studies confirmed these findings. Since the neuroendocrine hypothalamus is the major target of gonadal steroid hormones, in the present study we aimed at determining the possible influence of estrogen and testosterone on the hypothalamic expression level and ATP-hydrolyzing enzymatic activity of NTPDase3. Methods: The medial and lateral subdivisions of the hypothalamus were investigated in castrated animals with or without hormone replacement and in intact controls. NTPDase3 protein levels were determined by Western blotting, and enzyme activity in neuronal mitochondria was investigated in synaptosomal preparations by the measurement of ADP-dependent state 3 mitochondrial respiration rates. Results and conclusion: Results revealed that both estrogen and testosterone exert a region-specific regulatory effect on hypothalamic NTPDase3-levels, and that these steroids differentially modulate the ATP-hydrolyzing activity of NTPDase in the medial- and lateral parts of the hypothalamus. Considering the previously proposed role of mitochondrial NTPDase3 in the regulation of neuronal ATP-levels, these results suggest that sexual steroids may regulate the energetic status of steroid-sensitive hypothalamic neurons. The aim of the present study was to give a more detailed account on the distribution of GFAP-IR astrocytes in the lumbosacral spinal cord. In all segments of the serial Vibratome-sections an intense immunostaining was observed in the Rolando substance of the dorsal horn and around the large ventral horn motor neurons. While immunoreactive astrocytes of the Rolando substance proved to be densely packed small cells with short stout processes other areas of the dorsal horn contained delicate, stellate astrocytes with long, slender processes. In the ventral horn, the large motor neurons were contacted by immunoreactive astrocytes. Characteristically, in the upper lumbar segments where motor neurons occurred in two groups the focus of immunoreactivity was also doubled. The central grey matter had a slightly higher immunoreactivity than its surrounding. An intense staining was observed around the central canal which proved to be due to immunoreactive subependymal cells rather than to the ependyma proper. In the white matter marked difference was observed in the radially fibrous and cellular appearences of GFAP in the ventral and lateral, and the dorsal funiculus, respectively. Thirty minutes after the epidural deposition of 1% lidocain a substantial enhancement of GFAP immunoreactivity was observed in the Rolando substance. It is still not known whether these changes include plastic rearrangements of synaptic connections. A reliable indicator of such changes is the detection of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a specific marker of astroglia. In previous studies after partial food deprivation significant increase in the amount of GFAP-immunoreactive elements of the LS of male rats was observed. Our aim was to reveal density changes of GFAP-immunoreactive glial elements in intact and ovariectomized female rats after partial food deprivation. Female Wistar rats were grouped: intact and ovariectomized fed ad libitum (n=4-4), intact and ovariectomized food deprived (n=4-4). After one week animals were transcardially perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde then 60 m vibratome serial sections were cut from the LS in the coronal plane and incubated for the detection of GFAP at light microscopic level. Sections were digitally photographed and photos were evaluated with computer-assisted densitometry. Roughly even density of GFAP was measured along the rostrocaudal axis of the LS in control animals. As a result of partial food deprivation, a significant increase of GFAP-immunoreactive elements could be detected in the LS of both intact and ovariectomized female rats. Thus, the density of GFAP immunoreactivity seems to be independent of the amount of gonadal hormones, and the measured changes were due exclusively to food deprivation. Our previous and recent results prove that the LS react with marked neurochemical changes to partial food deprivation affecting both neural and glial elements. Ph.D subprogram, Szent Istvan University, Godolli, Hungary Introduction Bacteria with well-known properties for the biological nitrogen-fixation are important components of the various soil-plant ecosystems and for the arable lands (Biro 2005). Interrelations between the macro-symbiont hosts and the micro-symbiont Rhizobium bacteria are highly influenced with the biotic and abiotic environmental stress-factors (Biro et al. 1993, 2005). In plant and soil inoculation practice the abundant soil microbial population is a major factor affecting the survival capacity and infection activity of different bacterial and fungal inoculum strains. It is very important to know more about the interactions between the native population and the inoculum strains, and also between the microbes and its various carriers during the inoculation processes. Up till now there were different organic matters mainly used to increase the survival capacity and infectivity of the microbial inoculum strains. Peat-based inoculum products could maintain the biotechnologically important strains for several month, preceeding the final inoculation. Agronomic impacts on energy crop performance

Introduction Maize (Zea mays L.) crop with an average 65 % starch content is highly suitable for bioethanol production. Starch content of some cultivars have been slightly increased by recent plant breeding projects. The Szent Istvan University Crop Production Institute has recently started a new research on exploring the most characteristic agronomic impacts (biological bases, production sites, plant nutrition and crop year effects) influencing the efficiency of maize starch based bioethananol and so ethyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (ETBE) production. The aim of the research is to observe, identify and quantify agronomic impacts and their interactions that may have an influence on production efficiency and stability. The present paper provides information concerning the first year of the trial.

Dark wings of desire

Birds vary enormously in their use of the pigment melanin to colour their plumage but the variation between species and between sexes has been a puzzle to researchers. New work on the plovers, a diverse group of mostly ground-nesting birds which show highly diverse use of melanin, suggests that sexual selection during aerial displays is one cause of the pigmentation.Veronika Bokony and colleagues at the Szent Istvan University in Budapest and at the University of Bath, UK, report in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B in London (published online) a comparison of the wide variation in melanin-coloured plumage between different species of plover and other aspects of their lifestyle.The authors hypothesised that melanin-coloured plumage may be more common in species where males carry out aerial courtship displays compared with those using ground-based courtships. And the plovers include species that use both courtship behaviours. The authors thought that black plumage may help enhance the silhouette of the bird against the sky during an aerial display and thus increase the attention of ground-based females during the display.The results suggest that this is indeed the case. Birds with ground-based displays show much less melanin-coloured plumage compared with the males of species carrying out aerial displays. They looked at whether melanin coloration might help with camouflage or in displays to defend territories but found no link between melanin coloration and these two lifestyle aspects compared to the link with aerobatic courtship displays by the males.“Taken together, our results are most consistent with the sexual selection hypothesis, and suggest that melaninised plumage has evolved to enhance the aerial display of male plovers,” the authors report.Cutting an aerial dash, in black, seems to be the plumage key to attracting mates in this group of plovers at least.View Large Image | View Hi-Res Image | Download PowerPoint Slide
