Cultural and personal values interact to predict divorce

We investigate the role of values in motivating the dissolution of marriage. Drawing on comprehensive value frameworks, we study how cultural values explain cross-national variation in divorce, how personal values explain further variation within nations, and how the two value systems interact together. In three archival studies, including more than 100,000 participants from over 55 countries, we study attitudes toward divorce as well as actual divorce. We found that divorce was more justifiable and likely in nations emphasizing autonomy values, and among individuals ascribing importance to self-direction, stimulation, and hedonism values. Divorce was less justifiable and likely in nations emphasizing embeddedness values, and among individuals ascribing importance to tradition and conformity values. Overall, the impact of personal values was stronger the more the culture emphasizes autonomy (vs. embeddedness) values. Understanding the role of values in divorce may inform individuals as to the values they desire in their future spouses.

Evaluation of Conservation Problems in Historical City Centers Within the Scope of Street Sanitization Works

Objective: Historic city centers constitute the unique value system of the society by containing the cultural heritage and knowledge of the past. However, changing living conditions in the process cause the maintenance and repair of these urban textures to be neglected, causing them to wear out and wear out. Although there is no clear road map for the conservation of historical buildings today, street sanitization works are frequently preferred because they have a fast implementation practice. This method, which is seen as an important step in creating conservation awareness in historical areas, is not effective in solving the problems permanently because it is a superficial application. In this context, the aim of the study is to examine the street rehabilitation works carried out within the scope of conservation projects in the historical city center. Theoretical Framework: The Tepebağ-Kayalıbağ neighborhood, which constitutes the historical city center of Adana, which is on the agenda with its conservation problems and is frequently discussed with critical readings with the street sanitization works, was selected as the sample area. Method: Within the scope of the study, Lawyer Turhan Arın, 26005 and 26012 street sanitization projects developed to find solutions to the problems in the region were examined in detail. Results and Discussion: In line with the analysis; it has been determined that street sanitization-oriented improvements in Tepebağ and Kayalıbağ Neighborhoods alone are not sufficient to ensure sustainable conservation. Originality/Value: From this point of view, socio-economic, legal-administrative and physical assessments specific to Tepebağ and Kayalıbağ Neighborhoods have been made to solve the problems in the region and measures have been developed.

The article is devoted to various aspects of the culture of the post-revolutionary period. The authors analyze the significant transformations that occurred in the cultural tradition of that time and examine the facets of human life that were fundamentally shaped by the new culture of the post-revolutionary period. The relevance of this study is due to the importance of cultural policy in modern Russia. In this regard, the experiences of cultural construction during the early years of Soviet power hold considerable significance and merit thorough exami-nation. The scientific novelty of this research lies in the fact that, for the first time, the authors trace the connec-tion between the cultural policy of the Bolsheviks and the linguistic norms that emerged during the post-revolutionary period. Furthermore, they analyze the interrelation of language, culture, and the political events of that time. The authors identify the causes and origins of the formation of cultural policy while considering its essential features. They investigate its impact on the society of the historical period in question, as well as on the lifestyles of the broadest masses of the populace. In this regard, the authors scrutinize how the introduction of a new system of values and social orientations led to the dismantling of prior cultural traditions and the es-tablishment of new ones. This transformation was particularly evident in public consciousness and the linguistic sphere of societal existence.

The Impact of Transformational Leadership on Employee Resistance in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Banking Sector

Adequate management of organizational changes is a crucial determinant of business success for banks today. Transformational leadership aligns with the conditions of dynamic changes in banks by creating an appropriate business climate of trust, thus impacting the achievement of the organization’s goals and results. Today, banks strive to be leaders in change, continuously providing innovative business solutions, which require proper management. Given the strategic decisions of banks to pursue new ideas and new ways of conducting business, which alter culture, climate, and value systems, it is crucial to apply the appropriate leadership style to effectively achieve desired results and business objectives. The problem in achieving these tasks is the occurrence of employee resistance to change, hence the significant role of the leader as the bearer of change. This paper presents the results of empirical research conducted in the banking sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina, aimed at determining the impact of transformational leadership on employee resistance to change in banks. The research included 90 respondents from 15 banks (65% of the total number of banks). Each bank included 6 respondents, with managers as the first stratum and employees as the second stratum. The authors believe that the application of transformational leadership in the banking sector can lead to a reduction in resistance to change, as well as expand scientific knowledge in the field of leadership in banking and create concrete recommendations for bank managers to apply in practice to improve business operations. Demonstrating transformational leadership as the dominant style of leading changes in the banking sector and determining its impact on employee resistance is the fundamental goal of this paper. It provides bank managers with valid information on the adequacy of applying appropriate leadership styles, thus offering a reliable basis for decision-making related to the process of implementing changes and ultimately achieving better business results.

Cистемообразующие принципы ценностно-смысловой системы этнорегиональной культуры Алтая

The aim of the article is to identify and analyze in detail the principles of construction of elements of ethno-regional culture of Altai, creating a unique system of values, norms, meanings, beliefs, expectations about ma-terial, spiritual and creative aspects of culture. The variety of sources – religion (shamanism, burkhanism), folk art (fairy tales, bylinas, folkloric account, tales, proverbs, sayings, songs sung in the throat singing technique), artistic works (paintings, translations of texts from the Altai language, stories), household items, national cos-tumes, home and homestead arrangement – predetermines the need to describe the basis of “man – creator – world”, in accordance with which the structure of existence and society is built and functions. A person’s con-nection with Nature, the Creator (the Master of Altai, the Mistress of Altai) helps to achieve harmony with the World, entering a higher stage of development from the values of survival (preservation of the Species) to the values of self-expression (preservation of the Self with a wide range of possibilities and feelings).

Chinese consumers’ dish value: a best–worst scaling approach

PurposeThis paper aims to identify Chinese consumers’ dish value systems and investigate whether and to what extent their dish values vary by type of consumers.Design/methodology/approachWe used a best–worst scaling (BWS) developed based on previous literature on food values and attributes of Chinese dishes to elicit Chinese consumers’ dish value structure. Then, we estimated each participant’s share of preferences for dish values and applied Ward’s linkage cluster analysis to identify the heterogeneity of their dish values.FindingsOur results indicate that food safety values, including the safety of agricultural products, additives and food processing, are valued most by Chinese consumers. They rate health-nutrition values as the second most important dish values. There is significant heterogeneity in Chinese consumers' dish values. Their dish values tend to drive their dish consumption patterns.Originality/valueThe dish is the mainstay of the Chinese meal. This study is among a few studies that examine Chinese consumers’ dish values that underlie consumer dish preferences and choices. The results provide essential information to promote a healthy and sustainable diet among Chinese consumers by understanding their values and motivations for making dish choices.

The Cultural Politics of Artificial Intelligence in China

This essay examines the cultural politics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in China through the lens of postsocialism, proposing the concept of a ‘postsocialist AI’ that goes beyond the dominant paradigm of neoliberal informationalism. The essay first explores the distinct state-capital nexus in China’s AI development, characterized by paradoxical modes of operation driven by neoliberal motivations, yet also deeply influenced by symbolic lexicons, value systems, and institutional structures rooted in Leninist-Maoist traditions. The complex interplay of state support, local governmental practices, and market investment showcases ongoing negotiations among contradictory political-economic objectives and subject positions that resist simplification into a globally universalized model of neoliberal capitalism. Further, the essay investigates the ontogenesis or sociogenesis of machine learning – the process through which intelligent machines become socialized through interactions with their sociocultural and political contexts. By foregrounding the interactive encounter between distinct modes of machinic intelligence and Chinese modernity experiences, the essay contests the prevailing neoliberal subjectivity in AI studies and seeks to expand the political horizon limited by the hegemonic figure of homo economicus.

New public management as an extension of neoliberal ideology

Ideology is invisibly present in economics. Some schools of economic thought, such as Marxism or old institutional ism, admit the fact of researchers having their own value systems. However, proponents of neoliberal ideas insist on the positive and non-ideological nature of economic science. Denying neoliberalism’s ideological foundations affects socio-economic policy in regulating the public sector of the economy. The study aims to reveal the relationship between managerialism and neoliberal ideology. The foundation of research resides in the theory of new public management, old institutional economics theory, and approaches of narrative economics. The selection and full text screening of Russian-language scientific publications were carried out using narrative analysis and the PRISMA method. The evidence base covers an array of studies by Russian researchers on managerialism, new public management, and neoliberalism. The paper reveals that scholars predominantly view managerialism as a continuation of neoliberal ideology. We have traced the evolution of theoretical and practical aspects of neoliberalism, which can be classified as a loose concept subject to heavy criticism, and identified three additional types of neoliberalism specific to Russian economic science. The findings illustrate that the practical implementation of new public management shifts the focus from long-term strategic goals to short-term results.

Revitalization Practices of World Cultural Heritage: A Case Study of Yungang Grottoes

In contemporary society, the consumption of symbols and meanings has become the core of postmodern society, and engaging with cultural heritage has become an important way for people to seek connections with society and represent their own identities. Under the influence of consumerism, cultural heritage has been packaged as consumable goods, transforming into a public history belonging to the market economy. Public history enhances communication across all levels of society and cultural heritage, thereby generating diverse social needs. This process leads to new developments in cultural heritage, transforming the value of existing art, culture, history, and other aspects into economic value for consumption. This is a new social phenomenon that combines art and sociology, and it is also a popular trend in contemporary society. This study takes the Yungang Grottoes as a case, employing field investigation, observation, and literature analysis among qualitative research methods to study the historical consumption forms of World Cultural Heritage in the context of modern society. The study found that World Cultural Heritage contains unique cultural values, and under the influence of historical consumerism, the value system of the heritage is expanded. The rational utilization of heritage becomes the key direction for sustainable development of heritage, enriching the forms of historical consumption of cultural heritage is the key force for the revitalization of cultural heritage. The study has universality and provides important reference value for the revitalization of cultural heritage in other regions of the world.

Ценностные основы профессиональной подготовки будущих учителей русского языка и литературы

The purpose of the study is to identify the teacher’s priority values and ways to form them in the process of studying at the university for future teachers of Russian language and literature. The scientific novelty of the research lies in an integrated approach to solving the problem of forming the value foundations of professional training for undergraduate students in the specialty 44.03.05 Pedagogical education (with two training profiles), profiles “Russian language”, “Literature”, within the framework of the axiological direction in teaching the Russian language, which includes a wide range of opportunities to work with folklore texts, contributing to the formation of a system of traditional values and professional competencies of future teachers. Through a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the results of the survey of future language teachers, the most relevant values of a modern teacher have been identified, and the importance of each category of values has been established, taking into account the statistical indicators of students’ choice of each course of study. The research has shown that a systematic approach to the formation of the value foundations of students’ professional training and a comprehensive solution to the current problems of methodological support for future teachers of Russian language and literature are necessary conditions for the successful development of the modern educational space of the Russian Federation.

Proposed water valuation scheme for a more sustainable agricultural water productivity

<p>Growing depletion of groundwater resources is a global threat and intensified under improper water valuation systems. Here, we proposed an irrigation water valuation framework based on the opportunity cost concept (IWVF), to better differentiate the value of surface water, renewable, and nonrenewable groundwater. In this study, a 10-years dataset was used in Marvdasht-Kharameh irrigation networks (MKINs) in southern Iran, where groundwater depletion overshoots the sustainable level with an annual average rate of 1.42 m y<sup>−1</sup>. Irrigation water use, net incomes and losses, and economic water productivities (EWP) were estimated under the common and newly developed valuation methods. The reflections of adopting IWVF on EWPs were assessed under current condition and the proposed WP improvement scenarios, including removing irrigation efficiency gaps, changing the cropping calendar, and application of different levels of deficit irrigation. Results showed that the value of irrigation water supply ($436.91 million) exceeds gross income through crop production ($139.01 million) under current condition, which results in a net loss of $297.9 million in the study area. Hence, economic WP loss will be −0.33 $ m<sup>−3</sup>, meaning that consuming a unit of blue water causes $0.33 income loss under current condition. Applying WP improvement scenarios can reduce value of irrigation water by 27%, and gross income by 5.3%. Accordingly, common WP can increase by 6.6% from 1.81 to 1.93 kg m<sup>−3</sup>. However, the negative sign of EWP loss under management scenarios (−0.22 $ m<sup>−3</sup>) indicates that crop production in the study area is not viable due to its considerable environmental damages. Hence, current irrigation system should be revisited when sustainable agriculture is considered. The proposed water valuation method can help decision makers to better assess the consequences of WP improvement strategies, if the true value of different water resources is ignored. </p>

Advancements in Autonomous Driving Systems: Enhancing Environmental Perception with Lidar Integration and Innovative Algorithms

This paper discusses the intricacies of autonomous driving systems, focusing on the four core modules: perception, sensing, decision-making, and control. The sensing module integrates various sensors like LiDAR, cameras, millimeter-wave radars, IMU, and GPS to gather essential data. The paper emphasizes the role of LiDAR in 3D object detection and point cloud segmentation, which are crucial for environmental perception. It also addresses the challenge of fusing data from multiple sensors into a unified coordinate system for effective decision-making. This research presents several significant advances in environmental perception. First there is a single-stage 3D object detection algorithm using sparse convolutional neural networks for improved speed and accuracy. Moreover there is a two-stage 3D object detection method focuses on detecting difficult targets through target center prediction. This method employs a novel neural network architecture, AOAP-SCNN, for feature extraction. Furthermore there is a point cloud instance segmentation algorithm (a method that separates and identifies individual objects in 3D space) utilizes a front view approach and a DLA network with Tiny-PointNet for feature extraction. Finally there is also an automatic calibration algorithm for LiDAR and camera systems based on segmentation, designed for real-time operation on embedded platforms, which corrects the extrinsic matrix and improves the self-calibration system's practical value. Building upon these technical innovations, the paper provides a comprehensive analysis of intelligent vehicle technology including the history of development, the importance of environmental perception, and the application and limitations of LiDAR in intelligent vehicles.

The internal conflicts and contemporary dilemmas of America’s national characteristics

Since the twenty-first century, the political landscape of the United States has undergone dramatic changes. One of the key manifestations is the rise of evangelical Christian nationalism and its significant internal and external political consequences. While the causes behind the rise of evangelical Christian nationalism in the United States and its resulting political effects are multifaceted, fundamentally, these developments are closely linked to issues that have existed throughout the history of the American nation-building process, such as the ambiguity of national objectives and the conflict of value systems. The root cause lies in the instability and multifaceted nature of the American national characteristics. Since its founding, the U.S. has consistently wavered in its national characteristics, presenting three competing models of the modern American state: the empire of liberty, the liberal civic state, and the Anglo-Saxon Protestant nation. The positioning of these three national characteristics, which are seemingly contradictory yet often coexisting, has, on the one hand, shaped the unique character of the United States, while on the other hand, it has exposed the U.S. to periodic conflicts and crises. It is important to note that the rise of evangelical Christian nationalism in the twenty-first century, coupled with the increasing polarization of American politics, may disrupt the previously existing balance of conflicting yet coexisting national identities. With the continuous decline in the population of the white majority, this balance is likely to break down further, potentially resulting in prolonged internal strife within the U.S.

Neoliberal values and the workplace: a way forward through capabilities and care

The neoliberal reality of the past 40 years has caused changes is the workplace, Work conditions have changed restricting people’s freedom and compromising their well-being, often not allowing them to develop our human abilities in the way they chose to. This paper focuses on a neglected aspect of neoliberalism that contributes to this problem: the orientation of the core values of neoliberalism. This paper will argue that the value system of neoliberalism is structured on what can be characterized as ‘male’ values and this leads to a fragmentation of the labour experience altering the lived experience of work for the vast majority of people. It will further argue that to reverse this state of affairs a fundamental shift in our values is required and important insights for this can be found in the capabilities approach and the ethics of care.

Project EU-Africa: Changes of Strategy in Competitive Environment

The aim of this article is to identify changes in the priorities of the EU’s African strategy, seeking to maintain its position on the continent in light of competition from such actors as the United States and China, as well as to trace the evolution of the relations formats and influence of integration processes on the EU-Africa relations model. The authors use complex interdisciplinary approach, narrative methods and comparative analysis to determine new trends in EU cooperation with African countries including transition to multilateralism and regionalization; applying elements of integration and external Europeanization as convergence and incorporation of procedures, practices and norms in cooperation projects in Africa, using “soft power” instruments; policy of “equal partnership” and politicization of EU-Africa relations. However, the effectiveness of Europeanization as a replication of the European value system and democratic transition in African countries with other civilizational norms is very limited, so EU countries follow institutional logic in their relations with them. The authors underscore that the process of regional integration in Africa is one of the results of deepening cooperative interactions against the backdrop of its continuing asymmetry, also being an important difference of EU-Africa project from other cooperative models. Asymmetry manifests in economic relations, especially trade agreements, recognition of equal partnership, different positions in new world order, intra-country development differences and financial and labor force abilities of African countries. Equally relevant is the analysis of EU competition with the USA and China in Africa, identifying its specific traits in cooperation with the continent, and future prospects of the EU cooperation with African countries under the new realities and possible shortcomings of a new EU-Africa project.

What motivates critical care nurses to stay in their job? - Structural aspects for empowering intrinsic motivation in permissive professional contexts: A scoping review.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant number of critical care nurses have left their positions, citing overload, burnout, and moral distress. This scoping review is not just a theoretical exploration but a timely and crucial investigation into the aspects and structures of critical care nursing that can make the job fulfilling and appealing, thereby promoting intrinsic motivation and staff retention. A scoping review of studies reporting on factors that allow critical care nurses to fall back on their intrinsic job motivation. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies from 2019 until 2023 that examined critical care nurses are included. This scoping review, which was conducted in 12 databases, follows the framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley and the PRISMA framework. 22 studies met the inclusion criteria. The thematic synthesis identified 'meaning' as the overarching theme. Meaning can help critical nurses identify their intrinsic motivation and hold tight to it during professional challenges or low morale. Previous studies found meaning-making as an essential element of spirituality. In the present study, it is strongly related to the other subthemes: sense of pride and joy, personal relationships, thriving, and moral responsibility. It makes sense for care management to create specific structures and work conditions, such as flexible scheduling, opportunities for professional development, and supportive team environments that encourage critical care nurses in their professional autonomy. Measures tailored to the individual needs and resources are also crucial. In this way, existing intrinsic motivation can be nurtured, and critical care nurses are enabled to autonomously discern values set by the employer into their own value system. Institutions need to offer critical care nurses decision-making discretion whenever possible, broad information sharing, and a climate of trust and respect, in which the individual may feel autonomous and can develop personally and professionally.

Children’s rhymes, timeless melodies: uncovering the role and significance of amaXhosa children’s rhyme songs using cultural anthropological theory

The amaXhosa children’s rhyme songs, whether in their indigenous form or as adaptations or recontextualizations, remain downplayed in terms of scholarly scrutinization. Accordingly, this article aims to underline the roles, symbolisms, and significant meanings of three amaXhosa children’s rhyme songs. Purposive sampling is employed to recognize the three songs as a primary source of data. To address the aim, cultural anthropological theory is applied as one that unravels the roles, symbolisms, and significant meanings of these songs. Ultimately, three findings emerge. First, children’s rhyme songs serve as powerful vehicles for cultural transmission, cementing and continuing cultural identity, value systems, and traditions. Second, cultural anthropological interpretation unmasks that rhyming children’s songs plays a central role in advancing social cohesion, consciousness, and community bonding. Third, one uncovers the developmental impact and didactic value of children’s rhyme songs. In closing, these findings underscore the multifaceted role of children’s rhyme songs as cultural artifacts that transcend musical compositions, symbolizing the crux of human experience and community resilience through melody, rhythm, and tradition.

Reflections on using Talanoa methodology to engage with Pacific youth in Aotearoa New Zealand about their sexual and reproductive health

Pacific understandings of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) encompass beliefs and practices reflective of Pacific values systems. These are integral to cultural understandings of safety, relationships, and intimacy. Research processes and practices that appropriately address these values and sensitives are scarcely available in the literature, leading to limited use and understanding of culturally appropriate methods and procedures. Pacific methodologies like Talanoa are useful in ensuring that cultural perspectives unique to Pacific youth are addressed and appropriately represented in the research. This paper describes how cultural factors associated with sexual and reproductive health influenced the Talanoa research processes in a study of Pacific youth and SRH education. Key cultural considerations are discussed focussing on the positionality of the researchers, cultural sensitivities and protocols, communication strategies and the role of flexibility in privileging Pacific youth voices.
