AN APPRAISAL ANALYSIS OF NARRATIVE TEXT FROM THE 11TH GRADE ENGLISH TEXTBOOK

This present study explain the appraisal devices especially the attitude types. Appraisal theory is the development of Systemic Functional Linguistics theory in the realm of interpersonal meaning initiated by Martin and White. This study used qualitative research with discourse analysis (DA) techniques. The object of analysis in this study is narrative text of the English textbooks for senior high school students published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. This study employed a document analysis as a technique for collecting data. The findings showed that there were 65 systems of attitude which consist of 19 positive affect, 25 negative affect, 8 positive judgment, 8 negative judgment, 1 positive appreciation, and 4 negative appreciation.

Comparison of Indonesia and Korea Video Tourism Advertisements Found in YouTube Using Social Semiotic

This study aims to compare the differences and the similarities between two video tourism advertisements of Indonesia and South Korea through three levels of metafunction. The three levels of metafunctions are: 1) the level of ideational metafunction, 2) the level of interpersonal metafunction, and 3) the level of textual metafunction. The Systemic Functional Linguistics theory by Halliday, Visual Grammar theory by Kress and Van Leeuwen and generic structure analysis theory by Cheong were applied to analyze this research. The method used in this research was a descriptive research method. The data in this research were texts and images used in two video tourism advertisements. The results of the study show that they share one similarity and fourteen differences in the level of ideational metafunction. Then, there are six similarities and eight differences in the interpersonal level. Meanwhile, there are four differences and no similarities found for textual metafunction. The conclusion obtained from the findings is that they are more different rather than similar and the differences in how they produces the video tourism ads are affected by the differences in cultural background of the videos which are represented through speech and visual and lead to the different ways of producing structure of clauses and selection of words in the three levels of metafunction.

The Dynamic of Move in Teacher-Students’ Interaction

The present study attempts to determine move dynamics types in teacher-student’s interaction. The research design employed in this study was qualitative content analysis. The data obtained were the form of utterances gained from teacher-student’s interaction in English classroom interaction from the second-year students of SMA Negeri 1 Tanjungbalai class XI IPA 1-3 totaling to 90 students and 3 teachers involved. The data were analyzed by following Martin’s framework of move in systemic functional linguistic theory. The findings of the study exhibit that there are three types of move dynamic found in teacher-student’s interaction namely clarification (cl)-response to clarification (rcl), confirmation (cf)-response to confirmation (rcf), and challenge (ch)-response to challenge (rch). The dynamic of move realized in the data happens due to some reasons such as the unclear information from the teacher, and the prior knowledge possessed by students. The findings imply that a teacher should consider having a dynamic interaction. This can help support the achievement of students’ success in the teaching-learning process. The dynamic of interactions in the form of clarification, confirmation, and challenge shows that students follow and comprehend the meaning uttered by student.

REALIZATIONS OF PROJECTION IN NEWS STORY AND EDITORIAL TEXTS

ABSTRACTThis research deals with projection that is used in news story and editorial texts. Projection is well defined as representation of a linguistic experience in another linguistic experience. Projection is equivalent to direct and indirect or reported speech in traditional or formal grammar. As projection is an element of the logical function, it is realized as a clause complex, where there are at least two clauses. With reference to some theories, projection is also potentially realized in the form of single clause and phrase. The aim of this research is to describe similarities and differences with reference to the realizations of projection used in the news story and editorial texts. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this research are clause complexes containing projection in news story and editorial texts of Indonesian newspapers. The sources of data are taken from news story and editorial texts of four newspaper publications, namely the daily Kompas, Republika, Waspada and Sinar Indonesia Baru (SIB). The four daily newspapers are assumed to represent national and provincial or local newspapers. Each of the newspapers is represented by seven headlines for news story texts and seven leading articles for editorial texts. The data are analyzed by using interactive model in which the clause complexes are analyzed with reference to systemic functional linguistic (SFL) theory about projection. The findings indicate that there are similarities and diffrences with reference to the realizations of projetion in the news story and editorial texts of Indonesian newspapers. THEME AND RHEME ANALYSIS AND POLITENESS STRATEGY IN DIPLOMATIC WORKPLACE WRITING: A DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

This study explores thematic progression patterns within the systemic functional linguistics (SFL) and the selection of words identified in writing within the diplomatic workplace. Politeness strategy employed between government to government communication through written diplomatic texts and its relationship with theme and rheme progression is the focus of this study. It is also aimed at raising host country EFL diplomat as well as university students’ awareness of progression patterns and the importance of persuasive writing to mitigate confrontational notions. Many researches have been conducted on public diplomacy and international relations on speeches or verbal texts but no studies on written text communication between a diplomatic office in a foreign country with the host country office announcing the arrival or departure of a diplomat from a foreign nation. To fill that gap is the reason of this study is aiming. A descriptive qualitative study was employed to analyze the theme-rheme progression patterns on a third-party-type diplomatic text of the Embassy of the United States of America addressed to the host country diplomatic consular section of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta. SFL theory was applied particularly in analyzing the textual meta-function of the text to find the theme-rheme progression patterns. The result showed that the distribution of themes and rhemes in the text being analyzed follows the simple progression category.

From Clause to Function: Texts Analysis Using Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory and Its Pedagogical Implication in Language Teaching

Using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory, this study was an attempt to investigate the metafunctions of language which are realized by register category of field, tenor, and mode existing simultaneously in texts. Employing qualitative approach with the use of discourse semantics analysis, two different selected newspaper texts were purposefully chosen as the source of data. Following the orientation of SFL, the writer modified the texts into some sentences and clauses which were subsequently analysed and compared regarding the objectives in question. The result of analysis shows that the field of texts was mostly concerned with physical actions and events employing both direct and indirect speech for the sake of information. Meanwhile, in terms of mode, Text I was more rhetoric and more detail in describing the event than text II. Yet, the level of modality in both texts was low and low in which there were not many actions of getting other people to do things. Aside from those two, this analysis revealed that the mode of both texts mostly used anaphoric types of referential cohesion indicating written mode. In the meantime, Text I had more number of conjunctions implying more explanative in giving information and cause and effect relation of the information. Of greater importance of this finding was that a paradigmatic description of context implying a meaning, system, and metafunctions of language and its pedagogical implication in language teaching.

The Indigenous Poetry of Resistance by the Colombian Poet Fredy Chikangana: A Transitivity Systemic Analysis

The emergence of Indigenous poetry to the public domain has represented a milestone in their struggle to voice their communities' past and present experiences despite the ongoing ostracizing discourses from societies as the ones residing in Indo-America. In this sense, the present paper will offer an analysis of selected poetry by the Colombian indigenous poet Fredy Chikangana in the light of the transitivity system informed by the Systemic Functional Linguistics theory to unveil their experiential meaning construal. To attain this goal, a descriptive quantitative and qualitative research method approach was applied through which the different process types, participants, and circumstances arising from the corpus were systematically identified, calculated, and analyzed. Findings indicated that among the six transitivity process types, the material processes (47%) dominated his poems, followed by the relational realizations (27%) whereas the verbal, behavioral, existential, and mental processes were relatively low altogether, representing an overall occurrence of 26%. This reveals that the author’s primary goal was to employ poetry as an agentive act of resistance that originated from the context of the situation in which his Yanakuna community has been and is immersed.

Interpersonal Function of Joe Biden’s Victory Speech (Systemic Functional Linguistics View)

Text analysis was mainly concerned with the ideational function and textual function. Besides, macro aspect has been regarded as the most text structure examined in previous studies. Regardless of those three aspects, this study focused on the interpersonal function analysis of political speech text, by taking an example of Joe Biden’s victory speech. The purposed theory namely Systemic Functional Linguistics theory (SFL) was then applied to analyze the text. The analysis was conducted by modifying the speech text into clauses which were subsequently analyzed in accordance with the goal of the analysis. Data analysis revealed that the speech established an intimate relationship and a close distance with the audience. As such, the speaker enables to gain support and exchange information through the use of linguistics resources namely declarative clause in the mood structure, modality, and pronoun "we". As a conclusion, different use of mood, modality, and personal pronouns might determine the different level of interpersonal function of a text. This study has a great impact on language teaching and learning in terms of maintaining social relationships and exchanging meanings between teachers and students by taking into account the link between linguistic resources and the nature of texts.

Epistemic Modality in Selected Presidential Inaugurals in Ghana

This paper employed the qualitative research approach to investigate the use of epistemic modality (EM) in four selected inaugural speeches of ex-presidents in the fourth republic of Ghana. It was underpinned by the interpersonal metafunction in Hallidayan’s (1994) Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory which dovetails into the concept of EM. The analysis was done with the aid of corpus-based computer software—AntConc. The findings revealed a preponderant use of modal verbs with a frequency of 165 representing 84.2% while lexical verbs occur 13 times representing 6.6%. Adjectives and adverbs are minimally used with a frequency of 11 and 7 representing 5.6% and 3.6% respectively. The findings also revealed that Ghanaian presidents in the fourth republic dominantly use high values of EM to present themselves as bold, confident, committed and forthright in their utterances. Additionally, they were also communicatively sensitive as they use tentative markers when addressing sensitive issues. The study bears implications for pedagogy, theory and practice as it boosts the concept of EM and its appropriate use in political discourse.

Experiential Realization in "Poda Ni Namonangon Ribut" on Mandailing Social Context

This study aims to analyze the function and realization of the meaning contained in the Poda ni Namonangon Ribut as an ancient script text contained in the Ulu Pungkut sub-district, Mandailing Natal district. This study uses a qualitative method with the documentation method in which the data is sourced from the Medan Archeology Agency. Data were analyzed using Systemic Functional Linguistics theory on Ideational Functions and to find metaphors of ideational meaning. The results of this study indicate the distribution of the relational process dominates from Participant, Cirmuntance. The realization of the meaning of the ideational function can be seen in the first, metaphor as a description of the community who want to have offspring, where the aim of Poda is ido napajadi boru "what makes a daughter". In the second, there is a metaphor that explains the word Na sundat realized with the words "Heavy Rain", "Divorce", "Birds perch", "ravine". In the third, shows that Poda has methafora like when the expectation is reached, it is the services of the writer "Shaman”. then when the writer has explained what the ingredients are. Social context of text that has a narrative and the author's conclusion about the solution to the problem of everyone who wants offspring in his family. The tradition of writing with the mandailing script (sumurat) became quite a tradition so that there are ancient texts in the traditional house became the animist beliefs and ideologies which can be seen in Bagas Godang.

“CONSTANT, ZIG-ZAG LINEAR, OR MULTIPLE?”: THEMATIC PROGRESSION PATTERNS ON EFL STUDENTS’ RECOUNT TEXTS

The main problem faced by EFL students in writing English texts includes the difficulties to produce a cohesive and coherent text that it seems necessary to show how the tools of Theme and Rheme can be used to help construct the students' good English writing. This study aimed to find out the types of thematic progression patterns in each clause of the recount texts written by students and the dominant pattern of thematic progression revealed from the texts. The research design of this study is a qualitative method which employed the study instrument of the students' recount texts at class IX of SMAN 2 Langsa, Aceh. A content analysis approach by using a Theme and Rheme framework generated from a theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) was used to analyze the thematic progression patterns on the students' recount texts, which included several steps: reading the student's texts, identifying the theme and rheme of every clause of the student's text, describing the thematic progression patterns of student's text and drawing the thematic progression pattern on student's text. The findings of the analysis indicated that there are three (3) thematic progression patterns found on the students' recount texts: the Theme Constant, the Theme Zig Zag Linear pattern and Theme Multiple patterns. The dominant type of thematic progression patterns constructed by the students into their recount texts was revealed mostly on 123 constant or reiteration patterns (76.8%), followed by zig-zag patterns of 35 times (21.8%) and 9 times (1.25%) of multiple patterns. The results of this study will be facilitative as the tools for English language teaching and learning classrooms particularly for writing English texts.

Autobiography writing instruction: The journey of a teacher participating in a systemic functional linguistics genre pedagogy professional development

Teaching writing has evolved from a focus on product to an emphasis on process. More recently, interest in genre pedagogy informed by systemic functional linguistics (SFL) has emerged. This article reports on a narrative analysis of a 3rd grade teacher’s development of writing instruction. This teacher participated for 10 years in a school-university collaboration at a U.S. urban elementary school with a multilingual population. SFL genre pedagogy, instruction that draws content from SFL theory and instructional practices from the teaching and learning cycle (TLC) (Rose & Martin, 2012; Shi & Chen, 2020), successfully scaffolded writing instruction for bilingual students of different levels of English proficiency. Participation in a long term, whole school, collaborative professional development, with full principal support, allowed this teacher to evolve in the way he taught autobiography writing over the span of four years. Classroom observations revealed the steady transformation of instruction and the changes in the writing of four cohorts of bilingual students. This study adds to the extant research on the impact of SFL genre pedagogy on writing development and illustrates the value of professional development that is long term and gives agency to teachers to adapt SFL genre pedagogy to their students’ needs.

Developing Multimodal Narrative Genres in Childhood: An Analysis of Pupils’ Written Texts Based on Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory

Social sustainability embraces literacy development as a means by which children integrate their knowledge in society and become powerful and meaningful. In this context, the development of writing among young children requires the design of new teaching strategies that allow for the multimodal repertoire brought by children into the classroom. Systemic Functional Linguistics offers tools for the analysis of children’s multimodal writing, which plays an important role in their literacy development. Our research was carried out in an urban context, the participants being 12 children aged 7 to 8. Data were collected through participant observation, conversations, and the analysis of documents and products generated by the children. From them, we analysed two stories written by two girls, which showed the way in which the children created meaning by combining verbal and visual modes, and how these modes interact (intersemiosis). The performance of a literacy task in which children are able to integrate their knowledge and heritage into the classroom, may constitute an interdisciplinary tool for their participation and engagement in the school, thus leading to a more equal society. In consequence, we propose that the integration of a genre-based pedagogy in the classroom should include greater awareness in teachers of the value of pupils’ multimodal assessments.

Multimodalities Element In The Cartoon Work Through Linguistic Modes And Visual Modes

In cartoons, meanings and messages are generated either through two semiotic modes that are verbal and visual or solely through visual modes. Interaction between language and cartoon images is often regarded as a straightforward and easy-to-process way to convey a message. This study aims to show that the meaning and cartoon messages are not always easy to understand, therefore readers should observe the language and visual information of each cartoon. This study is aimed at identifying the linguistic modes and the visual modes in the cartoons to convey the meaning and the explicit message or implied message. For this purpose, two theories are adopted; Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory by Halliday (1994) to analyze linguistic modes and multimodal approach by Kress and Van Leeuwen (1996, 2006) to analyze visual modes or images in cartoons. The research data was obtained from Usik-Usik cartoon book (Cynical Collection of the World of Education). The findings indicate that language text is a linguistic modes that acts as an effective multimodal element and complement the visual modes in the cartoon work. Furthermore, the findings of the study also show that the role of linguistic modes is to provide the context in the cartoon work as additional information so that the reader can understand the messages to be communicated more clearly.

Representations of Christmastide in Latin American Christmas Folk Songs: A Transitivity Analysis

Considered as the universal language, music has been historically a means of communication and personal expression about the inner and outer world of its creator, it is present in almost every social activity of human beings as in the habitual religious celebration of Christmas across the largely Catholic countries. Therefore, the present paper will provide a descriptive text analysis of ten traditional Latin American Christmas folk songs on the base of the transitivity system informed by the Hallidayan Systemic Functional Linguistics theory. To reach this goal, both a quantitative and qualitative research method approach was applied. Findings indicated that among the six analyzed transitivity process types, the material processes (32%) dominate the construal of the musical pieces, followed by the mental (23%), behavioral (18%), and relational realizations (13%) whereas the verbal and existential processes are relatively low all together representing an overall frequency of 14%. This reveals the singers’ attempt to represent the Christmas season as a nostalgic time leap, an immediate enjoyment, and a rewarding exchange.

Thematic Analysis in Physics Text Entitiled “Energy Can Neither Be Created Nor Destroyed”

Departing from systemic functional linguistics theory, this study is aimed at analyzing textual function found in physics text entitled “Energy Can Neither Be Created Nor Destroyed” . This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were in the form of clauses totaling to 28 clauses from 8 paragraphs. From the result of the analysis, it was found that marked and unmarked Theme were realized in the data. Then, the dominant Theme found which reaches 20 Themes from the 28 Themes found or it is equal to 71,42%. It can be interpreted that the text use common structure in the clause.

Education for Sale: The Identity Construction of `University’ and `Students’ in New Age University Prospectuses

The commercialization of higher education is a global phenomenon that is catching up with Pakistani higher education institutions. Due to inculcation of marketing practices, the role allocation and social relationship between the university and the students are being defined using new parameters. Through the incorporation of Halliday’s (Introduction to functional grammar, 2nd edition, Edward Arnold, London, 1994) Systemic Functional Linguistics theory with Critical Discourse Analysis, the linguistic analysis of the introductory pages of prospectuses of Pakistani universities is undertaken to examine the assigned role and relationship of the two major parties, i.e., the ‘university’ and the ‘students.’ The results reveal that universities keep formal writing style and maintain an evident distance between the university and students. In general, the results show that marketization aspects are evident in the discourse of prospectuses through various advertisement practices; however, the university’s position as a powerful entity is ideologically strengthened through addressing students from an authoritative place.

Translating English humor into Chinese subtitles: a semiotic perspective

This semiotically-oriented study examined the Chinese subtitle translations for humor in English sitcoms and highlighted the interactions between the verbal and the visual modes. Drawing on the General Theory of Verbal Humor and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), this study examined three script opposition types: normal vs. abnormal, actual vs. nonactual, and possible vs. impossible; furthermore, it analyzed three logical mechanism categories: false specification or exemplification; exaggeration or false analogy; and false reasoning on time, space, cause, or condition. It focused on the Chinese subtitles for English verbally-visually expressed humor in the English sitcom Modern Family (Season 5) and found that literal translation and explicitation are the two predominantly employed translation procedures to render script opposition and logical mechanism. This study further demonstrates that the two key concerns for subtitling English verbally-visually expressed humor are highlighting the incongruities embodied in script opposition and triggering the semiotic resolutions represented in logical mechanisms. These findings elucidate the relevance of visual elements for subtitling humor both among subtitle translators and researchers.

Full realization principle for the identification of ideational grammatical metaphor: nominalization as example

ABSTRACTWhen a clause likeglass cracks more quicklyis rankshifted and nominalized asglass crack growth rate, ideational grammatical metaphor (IGM) occurs. However, embedded clauses (e.g. the factthat it had been shown to be aforgery ruined his argument) are also rankshifted and nominalized, but they cannot be regarded as IGMs. This issue of embedding has tended to be relatively under studies within the theory of systemic functional linguistics (SFL). In order to tackle this issue, we propose a principle (i.e. the full realization principle, FRP) which operates in parallel with the principle of rankshift for the identification of IGMs. Under the FRP principle, a nominalization may be full, intermediate or raw in realization, but only the full nominalization which is compressed both in meaning and form can be regarded as IGM. As a necessary supplement to the rankshift principle, FRP helps distinguish nominalizations which are IGMs from those which are not, and the issue of embedding will not be a problem any longer. This in turn offers a new perspective to the categorization of nominalization in general.

Critical SFL praxis in teacher education: insights from Australian SFL scholars

To acknowledge the lasting and increasing influence of Halliday’s theory of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) on teacher education, this article outlines Critical SFL Praxis (CSFLP) in teacher education as an activist effort in research and practice. Informed by systemic functional linguistics, the critical approach seeks to push back against minoritization of multilingual youth in schools and communities. Profiling the socio-historical background of SFL-based pedagogy in teacher education in Australia, the authors of this article conducted interviews with four SFL scholars and teacher educators from Australia who were greatly influenced by Michael Halliday and his theory of social semiotics. After a brief definition of CSFLP, we present the findings of our qualitative analysis of the interview with the four Australian SFL scholars. These findings illustrate the historical tensions, challenges, and opportunities in enacting CSFLP and point toward key affordances of the theory for teachers and teacher education.
