A multiwire proportional chamber system for monitoring the position and profile of a charged particle beam

A multiwire proportional chamber system with a simple capacitive readout has been built to monitor the beam profile and position of charged particle beams. The system was succesfully used in a 1 cm diameter proton beam of intensity 10 5–10 11 protons/s. Using a collimated 90Sr source it was found that the position of a beam could be determined to better than 1.5 mm.

A multiwire proportional chamber system for use in a large gap magnetic spectrometer

A set of nine multiwire proportional chambers (1700 wires) online with a computer has been used in a photoproduction experiment at the Orsay Linear Accelerator. Triggered with scintillation counters, they have allowed the complete magnetic analysis of particle trajectories. The chamber properties are investigated before and after 3500 hours of use. Some original features developed for this experiment are described in detail; data acquisition and event reconstruction with the computer are discussed.

Multiwire proportional chambers used in analogue mode for beam profile and flux measurements

A description of a system of multiwire proportional chambers employed as hodoscopes in secondary proton synchrotron beams using fast ejection is given. Each chamber has 64 channels spaced by 1 mm, has a spatial resolution of 2 mm (fwhm) and a wire to wire uniformity better than ±5%. The system operates at a signal level of 4 mV per relativistic particle and has a dynamic range of 256:1.
