Removal of metaldehyde and acetamiprid by extracted cellulose from biomass incorporated with copper after acetylation

The presence of pesticides in water have reached to an alarming level in some parts of the world and have caused deteriorating effects on human health. Reclamation of portable water from such contaminants have become mandatory. Scientists around the world are trying to devise new methods of water purification. The target can be achieved either by limiting the use of pesticides for agriculture purposes or by devising unique methods for their recoveries from contaminated water. In this context, herein cellulose has been extracted from Populus nigra, subjected to acetylation using acetic acid in the acidic medium (sulfuric acid). The modified acetylated cellulose was treated with Cu-based salt to enable the metallic combination. The prepared sorbent was characterized by UV, SEM, EDX, XRD, and FTIR techniques. Two insecticides; metaldehyde and acetamiprid in synthetic waste-water solution were subjected for adsorption on the modified sorbent in a series of experiments to evaluate the impact of contact time, sorbent dosage, pH, and temperature. Optimum conditions established in a series of experiments such as 80 and 60 min of contact time for acetamiprid and metaldehyde respectively, pH of 8 and 9 (slightly basic) correspondingly for the mentioned pesticides, and a 0.08 g adsorbent dosage were used in the estimation of kinetics and isothermal parameters. The kinetic data successfully followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model whereas, the isothermal data was found to be best fitted by Langmuir isotherm model in the case of acetamiprid and by Freundlich in the case of metaldehyde. The regeneration study was performed for both the pesticides showing more than 70 % removal capabilities of fabricated adsorbent after three consecutive cycles. The prepared adsorbent could be a better alternative of commercial activated carbon however, further experiments are encouraged to investigate the full environmental application spectrum of the fabricated sorbent.

Production of activated carbon from spent coffee grounds (SCG) for removal of hexavalent chromium from synthetic wastewater solutions

In this research, spent coffee grounds (SCG) are converted into a highly valuable porous adsorbent which removes chromium (VI) from wastewater with high efficiency. A set of nine Spent Coffee Ground Activated Carbon (SCG-AC) adsorbent samples were synthesized, by varying key parameters including pyrolysis temperature (400, 600 °C), pyrolysis duration (1 and 2 h), and the impregnation ratio of the activating agent, KOH (ranging from 0:1 to 2:1). Characterizations of these adsorbent samples were conducted by advanced analytical tools including SEM, EDX, XRD, FTIR, TGA, and BET. Furthermore, we carried out adsorption studies, exploring the effects of temperature and dosage variations. Additionally, point zero charge experiments and desorption studies were carried out to further understand the adsorption process. The outcomes of our investigation demonstrate the successful synthesis of these spent coffee ground-derived adsorbents, with a yield of up to 34%. Notably, these adsorbents exhibited high efficiency in extracting chromium (VI) from water, with removal efficiencies ranging from 75% to 100%. The adsorption isotherms revealed the Langmuir model to be the most fitting descriptor of the adsorption behavior. Moreover, a thermodynamics study revealed the process to be endothermic in nature which furthers our understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Importantly, our cost assessment shows the economic advantage of the synthesized adsorbent over commercial counterparts such as zeolite, making it a competitive choice for real-world applications. In summation, the study not only introduces an innovative and sustainable utilization of spent coffee grounds but also delivers an in-depth exploration of the synthesized adsorbent's ability in chromium (VI) removal. Our holistic approach, encompassing thorough experimentation, characterization, and economic evaluation, solidifies the significance of this research in tackling environmental concerns and propelling advancements in wastewater treatment methodologies.

Mechanism of mitigating organic fouling on an electro-conductive membrane under anaerobic conditions and cathodic operation

Anaerobic electroconductive membrane (ECM) bioreactors are promising wastewater treatment technology, yet their organic antifouling mechanism remains unclear. This research investigated the impact of reactive oxygen species (ROS) oxidation, pH alteration, and electrostatic repulsion on carbon nanotube-based ECM organic fouling. Using a decoupled anode–cathode filtration system ensured unbiased results from the anode while studying distinct conditions near the cathodic ECM surface. The results demonstrated a 50 % reduction in transmembrane pressure (TMP) onset applying potential due to electroosmosis, emphasizing its importance in fouling studies. Fouling experiments using alginate in synthetic wastewater solution showed substantial organic fouling at open circuit potential, −1 and −1.5 V, as the TMP increased by about 2.5 times than the initial value. Fouling decreased significantly at −2.5 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), as indicated by the stable TMP. Analysis of ROS effects and fouling experiments at pH 7–––12 found no influence on organic fouling. Simplified force balance analysis and filtration tests suggested electrostatic repulsion as the antifouling mechanism. At potentials below −2.5 V, electrostatic repulsion maximizes closer to the ECM surface, causing fouling from short-range attractive forces. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance analysis at 0.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) proposed that a smooth ECM surface can reduce organic fouling at lower potentials.

Application of UVC-LED/H2O2 in wastewater treatments: treatment efficacy on disinfection byproduct precursors and micropollutants

The applications of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for controlling microcontaminants are essential to meet the water quality criteria for potable or nonpotable water reuses. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the application of light emitting diode (LED) as a possible light source to substitute traditional low-pressure mercury lamp (LPUV) in UV/H2O2 processes in treating precursors of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and pharmaceutical and personals care products (PPCPs) in wastewater. The results of this study revealed that UV fluence plays the most crucial role in the efficiency of UV/H2O2. At the same time, the initial concentration of H2O2, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and turbidity had minimal effects, except that poor efficiency result of UV/H2O2 was observed at a solution with low DOC concentration (2.4 mg L−1). Although the concentrations of organic matter decreased after UV/H2O2 treatment, the concentration of precursors of DBPs increased in the early stage of the photolysis process and decreased after that; moreover, the profiles of precursors for trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids were different. A comparison between LPUV and UVC-LED as light sources revealed that, at a fixed UV fluence input into the UV/H2O2 process, the trends and efficiencies in the degradation of organic matter and DBP precursors were similar. Meanwhile, the photoelectric conversion efficiency of UVC-LED should be improved for future applications in water treatment. Based on the UV/H2O2 treatment results on synthetic PPCPs wastewater solution, this study showed the effectiveness of UV/H2O2 to degrade micro organic contaminants.

Effects of photochlorination on the physicochemical transformation of polystyrene nanoplastics: Mechanism and environmental fate.

With the increasingly severe plastic pollution, the environmental behavior and effects of nanoplastics (NPs) have attracted much attention. The transformation of NPs in natural and engineered environments (e.g., photooxidation, disinfection) can significantly alter the physicochemical properties and thus affect the fate and toxicity of NPs. However, how solar irradiation with free chlorine, an inevitable process once NPs enter the environment from wastewater treatment plants, affects the physicochemical properties of NPs is still unclear. In this study, the behavior and mechanism of polystyrene (PS) NPs transformation in the solar/chlorine process were evaluated. The results demonstrated that solar irradiation significantly enhanced the physicochemical transformation of PS NPs during chlorination, including chain scission, surface oxidation, and organic release. In addition, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy analysis using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and reactive species quenching experiments showed that chain scission and surface oxidation of PS NPs were primarily caused by direct oxidation of hydroxyl radicals and ozone, while reactive chlorine species played an indirect role. Moreover, photochlorination-induced changes in the properties of PS NPs enhanced the colloidal stability in synthetic wastewater solution and toxicity to Caenorhabditis elegans. These findings reveal an important transformation behavior of nanoplastics in the environment and emphasize the importance of accounting for photochlorination to accurately assess the ecological risk of nanoplastics.

Amino-Functionalized Cellulose Nanofiber/Lignosulfonate New Aerogel Adsorbent for the Removal of Dyes and Heavy Metals from Wastewater.

Due to the increasingly widespread water pollutants and the high cost of treatment methods, there is a demand for new, inexpensive, renewable, and biodegradable adsorbent materials for the purification of wastewater contaminants. In this study, a new biocomposite aerogel (Amf-CNF/LS) was prepared using a chemically cross-linking method between the amino-functionalized cellulose nanofibers (Amf-CNF) and lignosulfonates (LS). The physical and chemical properties of the prepared aerogel were investigated using several techniques including elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and N2 adsorption-desorption analysis. The Amf-CNF/LS aerogel was then applied for the removal of methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B dye (RhB), and the heavy metal cadmium ion (Cd2+) from synthetic wastewater solutions. The adsorption parameters controlling the adsorption process including the pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and adsorbate concen-tration were optimized. High adsorption kinetics and isotherms were observed, with the adsorption isotherms of the Amf-CNF/LS aerogel fitting the Langmuir model with maximum adsorption capacities of 170.94, 147.28, and 129.87 mg/g for MB, RhB, and Cd2+, respectively. These results show that Amf-CNF/LS aerogel is a promising green and inexpensive adsorbent for MB, RhB, and Cd2+ removal from wastewater.

Evaluation of a hydrodynamic cavitation-type bubble generator in a prototype bench-scale flotation unit for poultry processing wastewater treatment

ABSTRACT Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) systems are designed to remove oil and grease (O&G) and total suspended solids (TSS) in wastewater treatment. These systems require saturation tanks, water pumps, and high-pressure compressors to control the pressure, hydraulic retention time, and airflow parameters. DAF process efficiency depends on complex operational controls associated with these components, and the most critical aspect of an effectively operating DAF unit is a generated bubble size. This work presents the design and operational test of a flotation unit prototype that replaces the saturation tank and high-pressure compressors present in DAF with the CARMIN microbubble injector, the evaluation of the proposed system's TSS and O&G removal efficiency was carried out considering different initial configurations of the injector to change the generated microbubble size, four synthetic wastewater solutions, and poly aluminum chloride as a flocculant to establish the potential of this system for the poultry processing wastewater treatment. Mean microbubble size results were obtained from 47.41 µm to 116.17 µm. The average removal efficiency of TSS exceeded 65% under a high concentration of suspended particles (1,560 mg/l) and 80% under a lower TSS concentration (795 mg/l). Meanwhile, 70% and 90% of O&G were removed from high (400 mg/l) and low (100 mg/l) initial O&G concentrations, respectively. These removal levels are similar to those reported in the literature for DAF for poultry processing wastewater, albeit with a simple configuration and better controllability and scalability.

Removal of sulphate and arsenic from wastewater using calcium sulfoaluminate (ye’elimite)

Chemical precipitation is one of the most widely known methods for treatment of industrial wastewaters with high sulphate content, where sulphate can be precipitated as practically insoluble ettringite (Ca6Al2(SO4)3(OH)12·26H2O). This treatment method is also widely recognised for solidifying hazardous components and toxic elements e.g. arsenic in wastewater. In the ettringite precipitation process, lime and aluminium salts are typically used as starting materials, in stoichiometric amounts to form ettringite from the sulphate-containing water, leading to a pH rise to ∼11.5 and ettringite precipitation. In the current study, for the first time, ye’elimite mineral (Ca4Al6O12SO4), also known as calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) in cements, is used in order to investigate its suitability to form ettringite precipitate from sulphate and arsenic containing synthetic wastewater and industrial wastewater solutions. The dissolution of ye’elimite prior to dosing, optimal precipitation pH, and arsenic co-precipitation were studied. The effluent and precipitates were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM-EDS) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The results showed that high percentage of sulphate removal (98% in the synthetic wastewater and 87% in the industrial wastewater) can be achieved using ye’elimite as the aluminium source in ettringite precipitation. Additionally, up to 95% arsenic removal was achieved in arsenic co-precipitation experiments from the synthetic wastewater. The current developed technology can be used as a novel ecological and cost-effective approach for removal of sulphate and toxic elements from wastewater.

Ethylenediaminetetraacetate functionalized MgFe layered double hydroxide/biochar composites for highly efficient adsorptive removal of lead ions from aqueous solutions.

The application of layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of MgFe and its composites with biochar of Eucalyptus camdulensis (Eb) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was explored in a batch study to mitigate toxic lead ions (Pb2+) from synthetic wastewater solutions. SEM images revealed that MgFe/LDH composites with Eb were successfully formed, while FTIR spectra confirmed the successful adsorption of Pb2+ onto the MgFe/LDH and composite adsorbents. Batch equilibrium was attained after 60 min, then the adsorption capacity gradually increased. An increase in adsorption capacity (and a 60% decrease in the percentage removal) was observed by increasing the initial Pb2+ concentration, and the highest value was 136 mg g-1 for MgFe/LDH-Eb_EDTA. A 50–60% increase in both the adsorption capacities and percent removal was seen in the pH range of 2–6. The second-order kinetic model had a nearly perfect fitting, suggesting that chemisorption was the mechanism controlling adsorption. The Langmuir isotherm model best presented the adsorption data, suggesting that the Pb2+ adsorption was monolayer, and predicted a better affinity between the adsorbent surface and absorbed Pb2+ for MgFe/LDH-Eb_EDTA in comparison to the other two adsorbents. The D–R isotherm suggested that the adsorption system was physical based on E values for all three adsorbents, while the Temkin isotherm model suggested that Pb2+ adsorption was heterogeneous. Finally, the Sips and R–P isotherms predicted that the adsorption of Pb2+ on the surface of the adsorbents was homogeneous and heterogeneous.

Studying of the effect of many parameters on a bulk liquid membrane and its opposition in Cd(II) removal from wastewater

Because of their tendency to accumulate in the body and their highly toxic potential, heavy metal pollution is becoming one of the main problems globally. The presented study examined the likelihood of eliminating heavy metals by means of the Bulk Liquid Membrane (BLM) method, which is a tool of high importance in various applications of such type. BLM is a simple type of liquid membrane which is showing excellent membrane stability yet insignificant solute fluxes. Therefore, this study outlines the BLM’s membrane resistance in removing heavy metals and recovery from the waste-waters. The cadmium (Cd) ions are fully prepared from the acidic aqueous solutions in this study with the use of the BLM. With regard to stirred transfer cell type, an experimental research has examined the recovery and extraction of Cd ions from synthetic wastewater solution via carrier Tri-butyl-phosphate TBP [C12H27O4P] with the use of BLM as an approach of separation. The impact of some parameters such as feed and stripping stirring speed, carrier concentration, membrane stirring speed, initial feed concentration, temperature, feed, and stripping phase pH is assessed for Cd removal. At pH 4 for feed, pH 10 for strip, 10 %(v/v) carrier concentration, 2 ppm initial concentration, 150 rpm,(S:F) = (1:1) in toluene, and the room temperature the maximal efficiency of extraction and stripping of cadmium (II) metal ions was 82 % and 93 %.

Performance of photopolymerized active layer forward osmosis membrane in the osmotic microbial fuel cell

Osmotic microbial fuel cell (OMFC) is evolved by substituting the proton exchange membrane (PEM) by forward osmosis (FO) membrane in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). This study tried to mitigate the dependency on commercial FO membranes to enhance the mutual benefits between MFC and FO. We investigated the performance of photo-polymerized active layer FO membranes in OMFC with feed as a synthetic wastewater and draw solution as 35 g/L NaCl solution and compared by commercial HTI cellulose triacetate (CTA) membrane. Poly (ethylene glycol) phenyl ether acrylate (PPEA) monomer and methacrylic acid (MAA) monomer was used in different ratio i.e., 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 and 0/100 for preparation of active layer on our earlier work’s optimized substrate. Effect of the concentration of MAA had a significant effect on ion exchange capacity, water uptake, and oxygen and proton mass transfer. Among all prepared membranes, the 75/25 FO membrane showed the highest power density of 237.23 ± 0.90 mW/m 2 and average water flux 0.95 ± 0.71 LMH. • Photo-polymerized active layer FO membranes were investigated in OMFC. • PPEA and MAA were used as monomers to prepared FO membranes. • The concentration of MAA was found a significant parameter. • 75/25 FO membrane showed highest performance than CTA FO membrane.

Electrodegradation of Acid Mixture Dye through the Employment of Cu/Fe Macro-Corrosion Galvanic Cell in Na2SO4 Synthetic Wastewater.

Traditional wastewater purification processes are based on a combination of physical, chemical, and biological methods; however, typical electrochemical techniques for removing pollutants require large amounts of electrical energy. In this study, we report on a process of wastewater purification, through continuous anodic dissolution of iron anode for aerated Cu/Fe galvanic cell in synthetic Na2SO4 wastewater solution. Electrochemical experiments were conducted by means of a laboratory size electrolyzer, where electrocoagulation along with electrooxidation phenomena were examined for wastewater containing Acid Mixture dye. The above was visualized through the employment of electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance spectroscopy techniques) along with instrumental spectroscopy analyses.

Wastewater Fines Influence the Adsorption Behavior of Pollutants onto Microplastics

Millions of tons of microplastics (MPs) enter the wastewater collection systems every day and interact with raw sewage. In addition to MPs, varieties of organic and inorganic fines from urban effluents release into the sewer system and provide suitable surfaces for adsorption. To better understand the quantitative assessment of MPs sorption in wastewater and the role of fines, batch reactor experiments were performed using synthetic wastewater solutions containing organic, inorganic, and mixed organic–inorganic fines, and the results compared to a solution without fines. The MPs were two types of clean polypropylene (PP) particles, isotactic (iPP) and atactic (aPP). The results showed in all applied solutions the adsorption of pollutants was higher for the aPP averaging 1.3 mg/g compared with 0.5 mg/g for iPP, indicating that the adsorption varies with the type of polymer and surface properties. Further experiments also revealed a decrease in the sorption values of MPs for solutions containing inorganic fines, measured as the partition coefficient (Kd) and adsorbed concentration at equilibrium (qe). The result of the measured reference conductivity (к25) of the solutions for the same tests showed similar trends indicating that the magnitude of pollution adsorption onto MPs surfaces is controlled by the surface charge potential of the fine particles. The relationship between the qualitative assessments of ion removal, measured in terms of к25, and their quantitative assessment of adsorption values in terms of Kd in several identical tests, verifying that the conductivity of the solution was modified after adsorption of wastewater constituents onto the MPs.

Fabrication of Hybrid Materials Based on Waste Polyethylene/Porous Activated Metakaolinite Nanocomposite as an Efficient Membrane for Heavy Metal Desalination Processes

Hybrid nanostructure materials derived from activated metakaolinite are of growing importance due to their intriguing structural/functional properties and promising biomedical/environmental applications, especially designing desalination membranes. Herein, we report procedures to design and fabricate membranes based on waste polyethylene/porous activated-metakaolinite thin film nanocomposites (WPE/PAMK-TFN). It has been devoted to improving water desalination processes, where efficient removal of trace level (~250 ppm) of toxic heavy metals such as Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II) ions from synthetic wastewater solutions was highly accomplished. Physicochemical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface analysis (BET), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) have been extensively employed to elucidate the structure/composition of the prepared nanomaterials. The effect of concentration (0–0.5 wt%) of porous activated-metakaolinite (PAMK) on water permeation was investigated. The results obtained revealed that 0.5 wt% of PAMK clay particles produced the highest dispersion, as evident by SEM images of the nanocomposite membranes. Significantly, the constructed membrane showed marked improvements in porosity, hydrophilicity, and hydraulic resistance. Moreover, elemental mapping studies have confirmed the intercalation of activated bentonite clay within the polymer matrix. The obtained results demonstrated that increased flux and rejection capability of membranes occurred at high clay dosage. In contrast, the low rejection capability was observed at either lower pH and higher initial feed concentrations. Ultimately, for 250 ppm of Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II) ions, the constructed membranes showed maximum removal capability of 69.3%, 76.2%, and 82.5% of toxic cations, respectively.

Activated carbonaceous materials from tea waste and its removal capacity of indigo carmine present in solution: synthesis, batch and optimization study

The present work determines efficiency of domestic food waste like tea waste in removing indigo carmine from synthetic textile wastewater. Carbonaceous material (tea waste) has been employed and it showed removal percentage of indigo carmine at 90% through adsorption process. Carbonaceous material was chemically activated by using modified Hummer’s method and it was observed through Scanning Electron Microscopic image, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller analysis that revealed that the modified biochar is comparably similar to graphene oxide (GO). Various experimental parameters are evaluated for the removal efficiency of the synthesized adsorbent under the present study. Results of the experiments performed using the GO-like adsorbent synthesized from tea waste confirmed potential efficiency of adsorption of indigo carmine dye from synthetic waste water solution. The adsorption mechanism has been analysed by fitting the experimental data in different adsorption isotherm and kinetic models. The results indicated that the adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm model with maximum uptake of 20 mg g− 1 and pseudo second order kinetic model with the best correlation coefficient. The thermodynamic study showed the dye removal to be spontaneous and endothermic.

Influence of synthetic wastewater on entrapped air on the isotactic and atactic polypropylene microplastic surfaces.

The municipal wastewater collection system is recognized as an initial point of interaction between microplastics (MPs) and the urban wastewater matrix. The raw wastewater contains a wide variety of organic and inorganic substances including chemicals and heavy metals. However, the fate of MPs in urban sewer systems is not yet well understood. In this work two types of virgin polypropylene (PP) samples, isotactic (iPP) and atactic (aPP), were exposed to two synthetic wastewater solutions in order to study their effects on the physical properties of the hydrophobic polymer surfaces. Particular attention was paid to the pollution adhesion at the air-liquid-solid interfaces of the surface air pockets entrapped on the polymer surfaces. The first wastewater solution consists of mixed fat, oil and grease (FOG) - surfactant and another which is an exclusively contained wastewater surfactant. The interaction experiment over a period of 10min between the polymer's air pocket and solutions indicated that the size of the bubble in the mixed FOG-surfactant solution increased more pronouncedly for iPP (%152) in contrast to aPP (%31) and was also compared with the greater surface roughness of the polymers. The size variation of the spherical cap on the immersed polymer surfaces were measured between 17µm and 85µm using image processing techniques while the data was analyzed by the Young-Laplace equation. The corresponding technical surface roughness of the polymers, the surface tension of the liquids and their air/water contact angle on the flat polymer surfaces were also measured. The results of this study indicated that surface air pockets influence the adsorption capacity of MPs and thus their buoyancy and contamination potential.

Utilization of Egg-shell, a Locally Available Biowaste Material, for Adsorptive Removal of Congo Red from Aqueous Solution

Egg-shell, a locally obtainable biowaste material, was successfully used for common textile dye (congo red) removal from synthetic wastewater solution. All adsorptive experiments were carried out in a batch method. Experiments were conducted to understand the consequence of different functioning parameters, for example, the pH of the solution, adsorbent dosage, reaction time, and initial adsorbate concentration. The surface morphology of the egg-shell was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the adsorbent (before as well as after adsorption) showed that there was a change in surface morphology, which ensured the congo red adsorption on the adsorbent surface. The adsorbent dose was determined to be 1g as optimum value, while the solution pH 5 was seemingly the best operating pH at the tested conditions. Complete adsorption was achieved in 120 min while the pseudo-second-order kinetic model portrayed the sorption kinetics quite nicely. Langmuir adsorption model (monolayer adsorption) was the best-suited model for describing the sorption process in the concern of the correlation coefficient. The values of dimensionless separation parameters (RL) signified that the adsorption process was promising for all studied concentrations. A considerably great extent of sorption capacity (153.85 mg/g) of egg-shell adsorbent indicated that it could be employed for wastewater treatment in textile and related industries

Fabrication of SiO2/CuFe2O4/polyaniline composite: A highly efficient adsorbent for heavy metals removal from aquatic environment

A novel multifunctional of SiO2/CuFe2O4/polyaniline composite was synthesized through the interaction between silica (SiO2), copper iron oxide (CuFe2O4), and polyaniline (PANI) as starting materials. SiO2/CuFe2O4/polyaniline composite was characterized for morphology, crystallinity, textural properties, and utilised for the removal of Fe(II), Mn(II), and Cu(II) from synthetic wastewater solutions. The roles of solution pH (2.0–6.0), interaction time (15–420 min), initial ion concentration (50–700 mg/L), and solution temperature (30–50 °C) in the adsorption process were investigated. The adsorption capacities of SiO2/CuFe2O4/PANI for the tested metal ions were high compared to SiO2, CuFe2O4, and polyaniline. Equilibrium studies indicated that Fe(II) and Mn(II) adsorption were compliant with the Langmuir model, while the Freundlich equation described the removal of Cu(II) ions. The maximum Langmuir capacities were up to 285.71, 416.67, and 454.55 mg/g for Cu(II), Fe(II), and Mn(II), respectively. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model fitted well the metal ions removal data. The rate-controlling step reflected the involvement of surface and inner pore diffusion (intraparticle) processes. Electrostatic attractions and chelation were mainly responsible for the binding of metals ions onto SiO2/CuFe2O4/PANI. The selectivity of the studied ions was governed mainly by the hydrated ionic radii and the composite adsorption active sites. SiO2/CuFe2O4/PANI can be easily reused with a slight decrease (around 2–3%) in metal removal efficiency after four successive regeneration cycles.

Modelling and optimization studies on decolorization of brilliant green dye using integrated nanofiltration and photocatalysis

The current work explores the treatment of dye wastewater using the combination of photocatalysis and ceramic nanofiltration process. Commercial ceramic membrane and titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst were used in this study to investigate the removal of Brilliant Green (BG) dye from the synthetic dye wastewater solution. The effect of various operating parameters on dye decolorization and total organic carbon removal were investigated. The operating parameters (pH, catalyst loading and time duration) were optimized using an experimental design model namely Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The use of experimental design by RSM resulted in the improvement of dye decolorization at optimum conditions. In addition to these operating parameters, the trend of initial dye concentration and the influence of catalyst loading on permeate flux was also studied. Around 99% of decolorization was obtained by the hybrid system at 500 mg L− 1 of dye concentration, 1 g L− 1 of TiO2 dosage, pH of 4.2 and 90 min. The integrated system i.e. photocatalytic reactor with nanofiltration membrane has shown complete removal of BG dye compared to individual systems. From the present study, it can be concluded that this integrated system is one of the efficient methods for dye treatment.

Fluorescent compounds retained by ultrafiltration membranes for water reuse

Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are increasingly being applied in water treatment and reuse processes because they provide effective removal of microorganisms, suspended solids, and high molecular weight compounds. However, membrane fouling necessitates backwashing and periodic chemical cleaning and, as a result, causes an increase in the amount of energy and overall cost for operation. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been identified as one of the major causes of biofilm formation and fouling during membrane ultrafiltration. Yet there is still much to be understood regarding how DOM interacts with biofilms, with some studies suggesting that labile DOM fractions may be preferentially removed by biogeochemical interactions with the biofilm. In this study, we evaluated the effects of biofilm formation on the retention of different organic compounds by measuring dissolved organic carbon, total dissolved nitrogen, DOM fluorescence peak intensities, and also performed parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) modeling of fluorescent components to characterize the feed, permeate, and backwash during UF membrane fouling. We used a pilot scale, inside-out flow, UF membrane with a 0.03 μm pore size and different synthetic wastewater solutions as feed water. To evaluate the role of biofilms in preferential removal of DOM, unsterilized and sterilized synthetic wastewater solutions were run for several cycles. Results indicate that ultrafiltration for both solutions preferentially removed the biologically labile tryptophan-like components compared to the humic-like components. The similar percentage of removal of tryptophan-like components in both experiments suggest that the membrane biofilm on polyethersulfone membranes has little influence on the removal of biodegradable organic constituents. These findings also demonstrate that fluorescence spectroscopy can be a valuable tool to discriminate between different DOM fractions retained and passing through UF membrane filters.
