Comparative Study of the Synthesis of Silver, Copper, and Iron oxide Nanoparticles via Chemical and Green Methods Using Corn Bract for Enhanced Antibacterial Activity

The increasing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly solutions in nanotechnology highlights the importance of exploring novel methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles. Metal nanoparticles have unique properties and are particularly significant in addressing antimicrobial resistance and environmental challenges. This study aimed to synthesize silver, copper, and iron nanoparticles from waste corn bract using chemical and green synthesis methods and evaluate their antibacterial properties. Corn bract extract was prepared and used as a reducing and stabilizing agent in green synthesis, while the comparison was done by conventional chemical methods. The nanoparticles were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, FTIR, and SEM, and their antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive (Bacillus sp., Staphylococcus sp.) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas sp.) bacteria through the well diffusion method. The green-synthesized silver nanoparticles exhibited the highest antibacterial efficacy, especially against Pseudomonas sp. and E. coli, followed by copper and iron nanoparticles. Phytochemicals in corn bract extract enhanced the stability and bioactivity of green-synthesized nanoparticles, as confirmed by FTIR analysis. The results of this investigation underscore the capabilities of agricultural waste in facilitating sustainable nanoparticle production, wherein green synthesis provides enhanced antibacterial attributes in comparison to traditional chemical approaches. This research emphasizes the significance of nanoparticles synthesized through green methods in addressing antimicrobial resistance and highlights their role as a scalable and environmentally sustainable option for generating effective antimicrobial agents.

Curcumin-coated iron oxide nanoparticles for photodynamic therapy of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the deadliest cancer among women and its treatment using traditional methods leads the patient to experience adverse effects. However, photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive therapy modality that works through a photosensitizing agent, which treating activated by a suitable light source, releases reactive oxygen species capable of treating cancer. Furthermore, recent research indicates that combining PDT and nanoparticles can enhance therapeutic effects. In this way, the synthesis of IONPs (iron oxide nanoparticles) was carried out, and their subsequent coating was done with curcumin (IONPs@curcumin) so that they could act as therapeutic agents against breast cancer. Curcumin solubility tests were carried out to achieve the best results, with ethanol as a solvent, in different concentrations of ethanolic curcumin solution, with the optimal outcome observed at a concentration of 1mM. Subsequently, the stability analysis was conducted by adjusting the pH of the medium, revealing that at pH 10, the IONPs@curcumin exhibited the best stability and dispersion conditions. Then, cytotoxicity tests of IONPs@curcumin were carried out on the MDA-MB-468 triple-negative breast cancer cell line, under experimental conditions without irradiation and subjected to PDT. The results revealed a viability greater than 70%, as it did not exhibit cytotoxicity for cells in the dark. After 1 h of incubation, the PDT associated with IONPs@curcumin showed 32% of cell viability at a concentration of 30 mg/mL.

Electrosynthesis of Silane-Modified Magnetic Nanoparticles for Efficient Lead Ion Removal.

The removal of heavy metal ions, such as lead (Pb2+), from aqueous systems is critical due to their high toxicity and bioaccumulation in living organisms. This study presents a straightforward approach for the synthesis and surface modification of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) for the magnetic removal of Pb2+ ions. IONPs were produced via electrosynthesis at varying voltages (10-40 V), with optimal magnetic properties achieved at 40 V resulting in highly crystalline and magnetic IONPs in the gamma-maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) phase. IONPs were characterized using various techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A novel electrochemical method was developed for the silanization of IONPs using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES). The resulting silane-modified IONPs were evaluated for the magnetic removal of Pb2+ ions, with TEOS-modified IONPs demonstrating superior performance. This material exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 519 mg/g at a Pb2+ ion concentration of 300 ppm, and high removal efficiency across a range of Pb2+ ion concentrations, attributed to its Fe2O3@SiO2 core-shell structure. This study highlights the potential of the electrochemical synthesis and silanization of nanoparticles for heavy metal remediation in water.

Optimized Synthesis and Stabilization of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Enhanced Biomolecule Adsorption.

Monodisperse and colloidally stable magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles have been developed for diverse biotechnology applications. Although promising for the adsorption of organic molecules, the low density of adsorption sites in these nanoparticles has been a significant challenge. In this study, an optimized factorial design with response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to produce small Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) stabilized with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) was selected for immobilization on the surface of SPIONs to test adsorption capacity. The model was validated by correlating significant factors with experimental responses, enabling the prediction of the smallest nanoparticle size. We obtained superparamagnetic SPIONs (75.12 emu/g) with high surface area and an average diameter of 11.06 ± 0.84 nm, with stability improved by the adsorption of TEOS (-46.24 mV) and suitable for pH values from 2 to 10 and salt concentrations up to 1 M. The maximum adsorption capacity of the nanoparticles was 87.8 ± 1.79 mg of BSA per gram of nanoparticles. The nanomaterial synthesized here presents a favorable platform for anchoring protein molecules via silanol groups on its electrostatically charged surface. This study introduces an effective strategy for the synthesis and stabilization of SPIONs with potential biotechnology applications.

Iron oxide nanoparticles: a versatile nanoplatform for the treatment and diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer remains one of the main causes of human mortality, accounting for millions of deaths every year. Despite of several clinical options such as chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT), hormonal treatment, radiation therapy, and surgery to manage this disease, the mortality rate is still very high. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for innovative approaches to improve both diagnosis and treatment. Success stories of iron oxide nanoparticles, i.e. Ferucarbotran (Resovist®) and Ferrixan (Cliavist®) for liver imaging, CNS (Central nervous system) imaging, cell labeling, etc. have motivated researchers to explore these nanocarriers for treatment and diagnosis of different diseases. Iron oxide nanoparticles have improved the therapeutic efficacy of anticancer drugs through targeted delivery, heat/ROS (reactive oxygen species) generation on application of external energy and have also shown great potential as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Their unique magnetic properties enable sensitive imaging, and surface modification allows the attachment of specific biomolecules for targeted detection of ovarian cancer cells. Their unique properties, viz. magnetic responsiveness and surface functionalization, make them versatile tools for enhancing both imaging and therapeutic outcomes. Present article reviews the literature on the synthesis, functionalization, and applications of iron oxide nanoparticles in management of ovarian cancer.

Green Sol-Gel Synthesis of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Magnetic Hyperthermia Applications.

The unique properties of iron oxide nanoparticles have attracted significant interest within the biomedical community, particularly for magnetic hyperthermia applications. Various synthesis methods have been developed to optimize these nanoparticles. In this study, we employed a powdered coconut water (PCW)-assisted sol-gel method to produce magnetite nanoparticles for the first time. A comprehensive analysis of the thermal (differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry), structural (X-ray diffraction), morphological (scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy), magnetic (vibrating sample magnetometer and hyperthermia), and biological (cytotoxicity essays) properties was conducted to assess their potential for magnetic hyperthermia. Samples heat-treated at 700 °C and 400 °C (washed powder) for 4 h under argon presented only magnetite in their composition. The micrometer-sized particles exhibited ferrimagnetic behavior, with saturation magnetization values of 37, 76, and 10 emu/g and specific absorption rates (SAR) of 27.1, 19.9, and 14.1 W/g, respectively, for treatments at 350 °C (48 h), 700 °C (4 h), and 400 °C (washed powder, 4 h) under an argon atmosphere. Biological tests showed no cytotoxicity below 10 mg/mL. The findings highlight the potential of PCW-assisted synthesis as a sustainable and efficient strategy for producing pure magnetite, with powder washing preceding the heat treatment enabling the attainment of this phase at lower temperatures. Nevertheless, the micrometer-scale dimensions is observed in the morphological analysis limit their suitability for biomedical applications.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Functionalized with Macrocycle Antagonists for CXCR4 Receptor Targeting in Cancer Cells

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have shown great promise in targeted cancer therapy due to their unique magnetic properties and ability to be functionalized with various ligands. This study explores the use of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) functionalized with macrocycle antagonists to target CXCR4 receptors on cancer cells. The synthesis of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) was validated through XRD and TEM analyses, which showed uniform, roughly spherical particles. Fluorescence-loaded SPIONs provided enhanced imaging contrast in Jurkat cancer cells. Flow cytometry demonstrated that the nanoparticles effectively blocked CXCR4 receptors, highlighting their potential for targeted cancer therapy. These findings underscore the successful synthesis, characterization, and functionalization of SPIONs, paving the way for advanced nanomedicine strategies in cancer diagnostics and treatment.

Synthesis and characterization of multi-responsive iron oxide nanoparticles: Evaluation of antibacterial properties and photocatalytic activity

Cape gooseberry (CG) plant leaf extract-mediated iron oxide nanoparticles (CG-IO NPs) were fabricated for antibacterial research. The ideal concentration of the precursor salt, pH (11) of the reaction mixture, reducing agent to precursor salt ratio, and the production time of iron oxide nanoparticles were 5 mM, 9.0, 3:7, and 25 min, respectively. The iron oxide nanoparticles were tested using ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. FTIR spectroscopy was used to identify functional groups of the compounds, including the carbonyl, CH, and OH bands that reduced and produced nanoparticles. The size and shape of the synthesized CG-IO NPs were determined by TEM and dynamic light scattering, with the median and mean size of 13.9 nm and 15.8 nm, respectively. The thermal stability of the synthesized CG-IO NPs was assessed using TG/DTA in a nitrogen atmosphere. The elements and oxidation states of the CG-IO NP components were examined by XPS. The luminosity of the CG-IO NP was examined using PL spectroscopy. The synthetic CG-IO NPs exhibited strong antibacterial effects against dangerous bacteria, such as Salmonella enterica (S. entirica), Escherichia coli (E. coli), Streptococcus agalactiae, and Staphylococcus aureus. CG-IO NPs assisted in water reclamation by decomposing Malachite Green dye under solar light irradiation.

Green and chemical synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles: Comparative study for antimicrobial activity and toxicity concerns

Infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria in healthcare settings highlight the critical need for robust infection control strategies and effective antimicrobial stewardship. This was further emphasized by the COVID-19 pandemic. This necessitates developing more effective antimicrobial agents. Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were reported to be biocompatible and possess a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity with less susceptibilty of developing microbial resistance. Chemical synthesis is employed for industrial manufacture of IONPs. However, concerns about potential toxicity associated with chemical synthesis have led to a preference for green synthesis approaches, despite ongoing debates regarding their cytotoxicity. According to the authors' knowledge, the impact of synthesis methodology on the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of IONPs has not been previously studied. Therefore, the current study is considered the first attempt to assess and compare the toxicity and antimicrobial effect of IONPs synthesized using different methodologies (green versus chemical synthesis) while correlating these effects to the physicochemical properties of IONPs. Additionally, this study addresses for the first time the disturbance of the microbial antioxidant defense system in multidrug-resistant bacteria after their exposure to IONPs. Both types of IONPs effectively eradicated SARS-CoV-2, and multidrug-resistant bacteria: S. aureus, and E. Coli, in addition, both disrupted the antioxidant bacterial defense mechanism, indicating that reactive oxygen species play a significant role in their antimicrobial activities. Chemically synthesized IONPs showed superior antimicrobial activity to those produced by green methods and in-vivo study demonstrated their greater compatibility with skin and eyes. Therefore, chemically synthesized IONPs might be used as a disinfectant in healthcare settings.

The paper analyses the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles using SiO2·9H2O silica gels of different porosity as a reaction vessel. The influence of pore sizes of used SiO2·9H2O silica gels on the processes occurring at all stages of synthesis of nanocatalysts - iron oxide nanoparticles, conducted directly in the silica gel pores, has been investigated. All stages of synthesis were investigated by X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. It is observed that a narrow size distribution of iron oxide nanoparticles occurs in the 10 nm size pores, while in the 30 nm pores the distribution is much wider. By nitrogen adsorption-desorption method, it was found that the pores themselves have a size distribution around the pore sizes stated by the silica gel manufacturer (Q-10 and Q-30 nm). The 10 nm pores have a narrow size distribution, while the 30 nm pores have a broad size distribution and complex internal structure. It is shown that the nanoparticle size distributions correlate with the pore size distributions. The size distribution of the obtained iron oxide nanoparticles is determined by the size distribution and curvature of the pores in which they were synthesised.

Potential biological applications of environment friendly synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles using Sageretia thea root extract.

The green synthesis of Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) has shown numerous advantages over conventional physical and chemical synthesis methods as these methods non-ecofriendly and uses toxic chemicals and complicated equipments. In present study, Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) were created using simple, sustainable, eco-friendly and green chemistry protocol. The roots of novel medicinal plant Sageretia thea was used as a bio-template for the preparation of IONPs. Further, the synthesis of IONPs was confirmed using different analytical tools like UV-Vis, FT-IR, XRD, EDX, and SEM. The average sizes of (NPs) were found to be 16.04nm. Further, asynthesized IONPs were evaluated for several biological potentials including antibacterial, antifungal Anti-radical potentials (DPPH) and cytotoxicity assays. Antibacterial potencies were investigated using bacterial strains (in the concentration range of 1000-31.25µg/mL) revealing significant antibacterial potentials. ABA and SAU was reported to be least susceptible while KPN was observed to be most susceptible strain in bactericidal studies. Further, different fungal strains were used to investigate the antifungal potentials of IONPs (in the concentration range of 1000-31.25µg/mL) and revealed strong antifungal potencies against different pathogenic strains. Furthermore, MRA, FA and ANI were most susceptible and ABA was least susceptible in fungicidal examination. Significant cytotoxicity potential was examined using brine shrimps cytotoxicity assay, thus revealing the cytotoxic potential of asynthesized IONPs. The IC50 for S. thea based IONPs was recorded as 33.85µg/mL. Strong anti-radical potentials (DPPH) assay was performed to evaluate the ROS scavenging potential of S.T@IONPs. The highest scavenging potential was noted as 78.06%, TRP as 81.92% and TAC as 84% on maximum concentration of 200µg/mL. In summary, our experimental results concluded, that asynthesized IONPs have strong antibacterial, antifungal, DPPH scavenging and cytotoxic potentials and can be used in different biological applications. In nutshell, our as-prepared nanoparticles have shown potential bioactivities and we recommend, different other in vitro and in vivo biological and bioactivities to further analyze the biological potentials.

Green Synthesis of Iron Oxide NPs (IONPs) by Using Aqueous Extract of Parthenium hysterophorus Linnaeus for the In-vitro Antidiabetic and Anti-inflammatory Activities

The Parthenium hysterophorus Linnaeus is one of the anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic ethnomedicine. Therefore the formulation of this plant as nanoparticles will be fruitful anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic as compared to conventional extract. In the current study, the aqueous kernel extract from Parthenium hysterophorus Linnaeus was subjected to synthesize iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and explored their anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic potentials. The results indicate that the aqueous kernel extract effectively produced IONPs, which were verified using standard analytical methods. UV-visible spectrophotometer analysis was used to check the formation of IONPs. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to check numerous functional groups from the valuable phytochemicals present in the extract. These functional groups play crucial roles as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents during the synthesis of IONPs. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to investigate the surface characteristics of the nanoparticles. Notably, the IONPs fabricated from the extract demonstrated promising anti-inflammatory activity, inhibiting Human RBC by 79% and Heat Induced Hemolysis by 72%, as well as showing anti-diabetic potential with 60% inhibition of yeast glucose uptake and 72% inhibition of α-amylase activity, all at a concentration of 100 μg mL-1. These effects were partly comparable to standard drugs with anti-inflammatory activity of 85% inhibition of Human RBC and 78% inhibition of Heat Induced Hemolysis, and anti-diabetic activity of 67% inhibition of yeast glucose uptake and 78% inhibition of alpha amylase.
