Green synthesis of NiO NPs for metagenome-derived laccase stabilization: Detoxifying pollutants and wastes

Laccases play a crucial role in neutralizing environmental pollutants, including antibiotics and phenolic compounds, by converting them into less harmful substances via a unique oxidation process. This study introduces an environmentally sustainable remediation technique, utilizing NiO nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized through green chemistry to immobilize a metagenome-derived laccase, PersiLac1, enhancing its application in pollutant detoxification. Salvadora persica leaf extract was used for the synthesis of NiO nanoparticles, utilizing its phytochemical constituents as reducing and capping agents, followed by characterization through different analyses. Characterization of NiO nanoparticles revealed distinctive FTIR absorption peaks indicating the nanoparticulate structure, while FESEM showed structured NiO with robust interconnections and dimensionality of about 50nm, confirmed by EDX analysis to have a consistent distribution of Ni and O. The immobilized PersiLac1 demonstrated enhanced thermal stability, with 85.55 % activity at 80 °C and reduced enzyme leaching, retaining 67.93 % activity across 15 biocatalytic cycles. It efficiently reduced rice straw (RS) phenol by 67.97 % within 210 min and degraded 70–78 % of tetracycline (TC) across a wide pH range (4.0–8.0), showing superior performance over the free enzyme. Immobilized laccase achieved up to 71 % TC removal at 40–80 °C, significantly outperforming the free enzyme. Notably, 54 % efficiency was achieved at 500 mg/L TC by immobilized laccase at 120 min. This research showed the potential of green-synthesized NiO nanoparticles to effectively immobilize laccase, presenting an eco-friendly approach to purify pollutants such as phenols and antibiotics. The durability and reusability of the immobilized enzyme, coupled with its ability to reduce pollutants, indicates a viable method for cleaning the environment. Nonetheless, the production costs and scalability of NiO nanoparticles for widespread industrial applications pose significant challenges. Future studies should focus on implementation at an industrial level and examine a wider range of pollutants to fully leverage the environmental clean-up capabilities of this innovative technology.

Application of recycled nickel-oxide nanoparticles for biodiesel synthesis from the non-edible seed oil of Acacia farnesiana

The synthesis of NiO nanoparticles and the investigation of their catalytic activity for the synthesis of biodiesel from the non-edible seed oil of Acacia farnesiana were the objectives of this study. Through the use of SEM and XRD, the synthesis of nanoparticles was confirmed and the surface morphology and physical properties were studied too. The fuel properties were examined using ASTM methods, and the results were compared to the accepted ranges defined by ASTM D-6751. The synthesis of biodiesel, as well as the composition and structure of the chemical compounds present were confirmed using different spectroscopic methods (FT-IR, GC-MS, and 1H & 13C NMR). The transesterification method was used to synthesize the biodiesel. The DLS technique was used to determine the nanoparticles’ size (24 nm). Using 1:9 oil-to-methanol ratio, 20 mg of NiO as a catalyst, and a 60 min reaction time, a maximum biodiesel yield of 96% was achieved. According to the SEM result, the surface morphology of NiO changed with repeatedly use, which led to a drop in biodiesel yield from 96% to 82%. The main fuel characteristics of the biodiesel were tested and most of these were found within the range specified by ASTM D-6751.

Synthesis of Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles and Copper-Doped Nickel Oxide Nanocomposites Using Phytolacca dodecandra L'Herit Leaf Extract and Evaluation of Its Antioxidant and Photocatalytic Activities.

Nanotechnology research is emerging as cutting-edge technology, and nanoparticles (NPs) and nanocomposites (NCs) have played a significant role in the bioremediation and treatment of polluted water by organic and nonorganic materials. Nanoparticles produced by plant extracts are more stable and biocompatible in comparison with those produced by physical and chemical methods. This research focuses on the synthesis of NiO NPs and Cu-NiO NCs using Phytolacca dodecandra L'Herit (P.d) leaf extract and evaluation of their antioxidant and photocatalytic activities. Cu-NiO NCs were synthesized using 50 mL of 0.1 M nickel(II) nitrate hexahydrate, 10 mL of 0.1 M copper(II) nitrate trihydrate, and 20 mL of leaf extract. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by UV-vis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses to study the energy band gap, average crystallite size, functional groups, and morphology of the samples, respectively. The UV-vis analysis showed a red shift after copper doping, indicating a decrease in the optical band gap values. FT-IR characterization confirms the presence of various functional groups in samples. Crystallite sizes of the formed particles were obtained to be 14.18 and 16.10 nm from the XRD data for NiO NPs and Cu-NiO NCs, respectively. SEM showed the crystallinity of particles with a cubic structure. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) was found to be 78.3 and 97.8% by NiO NPs and Cu-NiO NCs, respectively. In the antioxidant test, NiO NPs and Cu-NiO NCs prevented the oxidation of 50% of the H2O2 molecules at a concentration of 363.96 and 350.29 μg/mL, respectively. Finally, the synthesized samples showed good photocatalytic and antioxidant activities.

Effect of pH Value on the Synthesis of NiO Nanoparticles and Microstructure of NiO Based Composite Anode

NiO nanoparticle was synthesized by a sol-gel method with three different pH values namely pH=1, 7 and 11, and then calcined at temperature of 450 ᵒC. The influence of different pH values on the physical properties of NiO nanoparticles were investigated by a particle size analyzer (PSA), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). Structural analysis confirmed that a cubic structure of NiO nanoparticle was obtained without any secondary phase for NiO powders prepared with pH=1, while the peak of secondary phase (Ni) appeared for NiO powders prepared with pH= 7 and 11. Morphological observation showed that the NiO nanoparticles prepared with pH=7 and 11 tend to form more agglomerates compared to one prepared with pH=1. The average diameter of NiO nanoparticles with pH 1, 7 and 11 were approximately in the range of 19-26 nm, 21-28 nm, and 24-30 nm, respectively. NiO powder that was synthesized with pH=1 was further used to prepare composite anode of NiO Nps-BaCe0.54Zr0.36Y0.1O2.95 (BCZY) powder. Unfortunately a composite of NiO Nps-BaCeO3-BaZrO3 was obtained instead of BCZY and governed by agglomerates with size in the range of 70-300 nm.

Synthesis of NiO Nanoparticles and Sulfur, and Nitrogen co Doped-Graphene Quantum Dots/ NiO Nanocomposites for Antibacterial Application

The human life is faced with bacterial infections which are one of the major cause of prevalence and mortality. Antibiotics have long been the preferred therapy for bacterial infections due to their cost-effectiveness and efficacy. In the field of overcoming microbial issues, new and emerging nanostructure-based materials have gotten a lot of attention. In this Study, NiO and sulfur, and nitrogen co doped-graphene quantum dots-decorated NiO nanocomposites (S,N-GQDs/NiO) are prepared via a simple hydrothermal method. Structural and morphological properties of products are determined via XRD, SEM, UV-Vis, and FTIR analysis. The prepared products are applied for the investigation of antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The results showed that prepared S,N-GQDs/NiO nanocomposites have high antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus among a wide range of microorganisms. For S,N-GQDs/NiO nanocomposites nanoparticles, the disk diffusion test proved that the highest growth inhibition zone was related to Staphylococcus aureus (17 mm). The presence of graphene quantum dots in S,N-GQDs/NiO nanocomposites facilitates reactive oxygen species (ROS) mechanism which lead to bet antibacterial activity.

Synthesis of NiO Nanoparticles by Chemical Precipitation Method

Over the last few years, a lot of work has been carried out in the field of NiO nanoparticles owing due to their good mechanical and thermal properties. Theyhave a wide a variety of applications in the electronic industry as well in material science. In this present investigation, NiO nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical precipitation method using different surfactants. The size, shape and crystalline nature of the NiO nanoparticles were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray diffraction studies (XRD). It was found that NiO nanoparticles synthesized by using Polyvinylpyrollidine(PVP) as a surfactant was found to be efficient in reduction of particle size distribution and had a spherical shape with weak agglomeration as confirmed from the SEM images.

Structural and optical investigations of biosynthesized bunsenite NiO nanoparticles (NPs) via an aqueous extract of Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaves

Green synthesis of nanoparticles represents an important part of nanotechnology that offers outstanding eco-friendly and financial benefits when compared to conventional methods that use toxic substances and involve complex processes. In this paper, we report a completely green process in which aqueous extract of rosemary leaves containing bioactive molecular compounds (flavonoids, monoterpenoids, phenolic acids, and diterpenoids) acted as both chelating and stabilizing agents to facilitate the synthesis of NiO NPs. Apart from the nickel metal precursor, the synthesis was free of solvents and surfactants in this method to adhere to green chemistry principles and the impartation of environmental benignity. To achieve the aim of the study, structural and optical property analyses of Bunsenite annealed at 500 °C were carried-out using complementary techniques namely high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and UV–Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy. HRTEM micrographs revealed the self-assembled, highly agglomerated quasi-spherical shaped NPs with a cubic structure and the average size was found to peak at 8.09 ± 0.20 nm. SAED and XRD exhibited the polycrystallinity and the purity of NiO NPs and the average size was found in the range of 11.598–15.527 nm. Besides, EDS depicted the presence of Ni and O in the sample while ATR-FTIR illustrated the Ni-O chemical bonds. From UV–Vis-NIR, the optical band gap amounted to 3.39 eV confirmed the formation of NiO NPs. Thereby, an easy and effective green approach for the synthesis of Bunsenite with efficient properties is reported.

Synthesis of NiO nanoparticles and their evaluation for photodynamic therapy against HeLa cancer cells

The worldwide increase in malignancy rates has caused an increase of research interest for compelling and safe materials used for cancer treatment. A standout amongst the most pervasive types of treatment for malignant growth is photodynamic therapy (PDT), which is viewed as an alternative to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. PDT utilizing metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) is anticipated to be a useful approach for the treatment of malignant tumors. In the present study, NiO NPs were synthesized via a chemical co-precipitation(CPT) technique and characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, UV–Visible spectroscopy, and EDX spectroscopy. The particle size was measured to be in the range of 90–120 nm using different characterization techniques. UV–visible spectroscopy showed the maximum absorption band was 340 nm, which confirmed the formation of the NiO NPs. Subsequently, the cytotoxicity of the NiO NPs was studied using a HeLa cancer cell line at various concentrations (10–180 μg/mL). An MTT assay was carried out and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) were investigated to determine the cell killing effects and their relationship with the loss of cell viability upon treatment with NiO alone or in the presence of light. Our results show that a light dose of 100 J/cm2 and NiO NPs concentration of 180 μg/mL exhibited an effective PDT outcome on cervical cancer cells. These key outcomes support the photokilling effect of NiO NPs as a potential treatment for cervical malignancy and their in-vivo application is inferred from their biocompatible properties.

CTAB assisted co‐precipitation synthesis of NiO nanoparticles and their efficient potential towards the removal of industrial dyes

In this work, nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) have been synthesised via cost-effective and highly convenient co-precipitation method, using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as capping agent and NaOH as a reducing agent. The as-synthesised NPs have been analysed by a number of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques such as UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared and energy dispersive X-ray. The prepared NiO NPs hold the prodigious potential towards the photocatalytic degradation of reactive blue 81 and Coomassie brilliant blue R-250 dyes with degradation efficiency of 90.8 and 95.7% and have high dye degradation rate constants of 1.3 × 10 − 2 min − 1 and 2.2 × 10 − 2 min − 1, respectively. Thus, this work signifies an efficient way to employ the NiO NPs as effective photocatalyst towards the alleviation of noxious industrial dyes.

Synthesis of NiO nanoparticles via green route using Ageratum conyzoides L. leaf extract and their catalytic activity

Nickel Oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NP) have been successfully synthesized using Ageratum conyzoides L. leaf extract via green method. The optical, structural, and morphology of NiO-NP were characterized. The characterization UV-Vis spectrophotometer showed a typical peak of NiO-NP at maximum wavelength of 324 nm. FT-IR characterization confirms that the stretching vibration of Ni-O occurs at wavenumber of 434 cm−1. The particle size distribution of NiO-NP was 50.70 − 91.3 nm characterized by PSA. The XRD pattern showed the crystallinity of NiO-NP with cubic structure. TEM image showed the particle size of NiO-NP was 8-15 nm. The catalytic activity percentage of NiO-NP shown 83% in the reduction of methylene blue compared to catalytic activity without catalyst was 28% for 18 minutes.

Green synthesis of NiO NPs using the aqueous extract of Drimia maritima and investigation of its catalytic activity for removal of aromatics from the natural water sources of Soran city

The NiO nanoparticles (NPs) were biosynthesized using the aqueous extract of the Scilla Martitimal (Drimia maritima ) from the family of Asparagaceae . The green synthesized NiONPs was characterized using electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Uv-vis spectroscopy (Uv-vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and elemental mapping. Furthermore, the excellent catalytic activity, of green synthesized nanoparticles was monitored using Uv-vis spectroscopy during the removal of aromatic contaminants from the water resources of northern parts of Soran city of Iraqi Kurdistan at ambient temperature.

Synthesis of NiO nanoparticles by sol-gel technique

Abstract NiO nanoparticles were fabricated by sol-gel route using ammonium hydroxide and nickel nitrate as precursors. The NiO nanoparticles were calcinated at 400 °C and 1000 °C. The nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), thermogravimetry analysis/differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA). The structural properties were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD confirmed the formation of well-crystallized and high purity NiO phase. The XRD showed that the peaks were sharpened and the crystallite size increased as the calcination temperature increased. The average crystallite size ranged from 12 nm to 20 nm, when calcined at temperatures 400 °C and 1000 °C, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed the chemical composition and confirmed the formation of NiO nanoparticles. The nanoparticles showed paramagnetic behavior.

Facile microwave-assisted synthesis of NiO nanoparticles and its effect on soybean (Glycine max).

NiO nanoparticles in high purity, 15 ± 0.5 nm in size, were prepared via solid-state microwave irradiation. The [Ni(NH3)6](NO3)2 complex as a novel source was decomposed in the presence of microwave irradiation for a short time (10 min). The present method is facile, safe, and low-cost. This method exhibits other advantages; there is no need of a solvent, fuel, surfactant, expensive material, or complex instrument. Synthesised NiO nanoparticles were determined by various analyses. Also, for the first time, NiO nanoparticle effects on biochemical factors in soybean were investigated. Seeds of soybean were grown in the Murashige and Skoog agar medium containing different concentrations of NiO nanoparticles (0, 200, and 400 mg/L) for 21 days under growth chamber conditions. Estimates of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide contents, and antioxidant enzymes (catalase and ascorbate peroxidase) under treatment of NiO nanoparticles were assayed. The result showed that by significantly increasing the concentration of NiO nanoparticles, the activity of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase enzymes was enhanced. Malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide contents significantly increased in the presence of NiO nanoparticles. In this study, the increasing activity of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase was not enough for radical oxygen species detoxification.

Synthesis of NiO nanoparticles via a green route using Monsonia burkeana: The physical and biological properties

NiO nanoparticles have emerged as ideal candidates in various fields due to their magnetic, electrical and optical properties. The coupling of plant extracts that have anticancer and antibacterial properties with NiO nanoparticles has increased their usage in the biomedical field. In this work, we report on the novel synthesis of NiO nanoparticles using a local medicinal plant, Monsonia burkenea. The nickel nanoparticles were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), High-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). FTIR showed that the extraction of the plant phytochemicals was successful and the green synthesized nanoparticles from plants contained the phytochemical groups that are found in the Monsonia burkeana plant. XRD and HRTEM confirmed the successful formation of NiO nanoparticles with an average particle size range of 20 nm. These results were also corroborated by elemental mapping and EDX, where the dominant groups were identified.The Monsonia burkeana NiO particles exhibited selective bactericidal activity against Gram-negative strains, such as E. coli and P. aeruginosa. Additionally, cytotoxicity studies showed the materials did not have any anti proliferative effect against A549 lung cancer cells but could be used as potential drug delivery vehicles against human cancers.

Influence of Pamoic Acid as a Complexing Agent in the Thermal Preparation of NiO Nanoparticles: Application to Electrochemical Water Oxidation

AbstractWe developed a thermal decomposition method for preparing NiO nanoparticles (NiONPs) using disodium salt of pamoic acid (Na2PA) as a complexing agent and Ni(NO3)2⋅6H2O as a nickel precursor. Prior to thermal decomposition, Ni(NO3)2⋅6H2O was mixed with Na2PA in ethanol, and the ethanol was evaporated succesively. The dried reaction mass was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Thermal decomposition was then performed in air to obtain the NiONPs. The role of Na2PA in the synthesis of NiONP was evaluated by preparing NiONPs according to the protocol described above without the addition of Na2PA. The X‐ray diffraction data indicated that crystalline NiO (bunsenite, cubic crystal system) formed with or without Na2PA; however, field emission scanning electron microscopy images showed that smaller monodisperse NiONPs formed only with the addition of Na2PA. Without Na2PA, the obtained NPs were quite large and polydisperse. The sizes of the NiONPs prepared in the presence of Na2PA were determined using transmission electron microscopy imaging to be 19.1 ± 3.2 nm. The electrocatalytic activity of the NiONPs toward water oxidation under alkaline conditions was evaluated by immobilizing the NPs onto an in‐house prepared filter paper derived carbon electrode, and compared.

Synthesis of NiO Nanoparticles by Microwave Assisted and Molten Salts Methods

Nickel oxide nanoparticles were prepared via molten salts and microwave assisted synthesis from nickel nitrate and the parameters of obtained nanopowders were compared. NiO nanoparticles with crystallite size in the range of 6-8 nm have been prepared by combining microwave assisted treatment of Ni (NO3)2 and urea solution with calcination at 300-320 °C. Molten salts (NaNO2-NaCl) ensured direct formation of NiO from Ni (NO3)2.6H2O and salts mixture at 350 °C but crystallite size of the particles reached 51-69 nm.

Synthesis of NiO Nanoparticles via a Solid State Thermal Decomposition of Nickel(II) Schiff Base Complex Ni(caph)(N3)(NO3) as a New Precursor

The Ni(II) Schiff base complex Ni(caph)(N3)(NO3), where caph = 2-amino-N-(3-phenylprop-2-enylidene)aniline, was synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses (CHN) and FT-IR spectroscopy. NiO nanoparticles were obtained by solid state thermal decomposition of Ni(caph)(N3)(NO3) at 450ºC. Their crystalline structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the composition of the products was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy.

Synthesis and characterizations of NiO nanoparticles via solid-state thermal decomposition of nickel(II) Schiff base complexes

To raise the need of new precursors in the synthesis of NiO nanoparticles, mononuclear nickel(II) Schiff base complexes, viz. Ni(salbn) and Ni(Me2-salpn), were employed as precursor in solid-state thermal decom- position. Structure, purity and morphology of these nano- particles have been examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM analysis reveals that the synthesized nanoparticles have cubic particles with an average diameter of around 5-15 nm. This method is simple, less costly, and fast and safe for production of NiO nanoparticles in industrial applications.
