Green Synthesis of Iron Nanoparticles Using Spinacia oleracea and Their Role in Antioxidant Defence

The green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3) using Spinacia oleracea leaf extract is explored in this study. Iron oxide nanoparticles are noted for their unique properties, such as enhanced chemical reactivity due to their high specific surface area to volume ratios. Unlike traditional physical and chemical methods, green synthesis presents an environmental friendly alternative, leveraging biological processes for nanoparticle production. This method is particularly significant due to its potential applications in various fields, including medicine, where iron nanoparticles demonstrate antibacterial activity. However, limited research exists on their antioxidant properties. In this research, Spinacia oleracea leaf extract is utilized to synthesize iron oxide nanoparticles, followed by characterization using UV-Visible spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, and SEM techniques. The results underscore the necessity for further investigation into the impact of nanoparticles on biological processes and the long-term effects of high nanoparticle concentrations on ecological stability. Additionally, this study includes an evaluation of antioxidant properties of the nanoparticles to address gaps in current research. Polyethylene glycol-assisted hydro-solvothermal growth of anisotropic magnetic iron oxides: The role of mixed environment conditions

In this study, an alternative mixed hydro-solvothermal route has been investigated for the synthesis of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles with anisotropic shape. The synthesis was performed at mild conditions (150 °C) in a water/2-propanol environment, using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG400) as structure directing agent, sodium thiosulfate as reducing agent, and NaOH as precipitating agent. The resulting systems were characterized by combining morphological, structural, and magnetic techniques. Experimental results clearly demonstrate that magnetite/maghemite nanorods are preferentially obtained in water/PEG400 environment, whereas 2-propanol/PEG400 environment promotes the growth of magnetite/maghemite polyhedral systems. Interestingly, synthesis performed in a mixed hydro-solvothermal (i.e., water/2-propanol) environment favors the preferential growth of hematite phase.

Plant‐assisted synthesis of Fe3O4 nanoparticles for catalytic degradation of methyl orange dye and electrochemical sensing of nitrite

AbstractThe present study details a more environmentally friendly method for synthesizing iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4‐NPs) utilizing Hibiscus sabdariffa (H. sabdariffa) leaf extract. The produced H. sabdariffa/Fe3O4‐NPs underwent characterization through VSM, XRD, FESEM‐EDX, TEM and FTIR analyses. The FESEM and TEM images revealed that the H. sabdariffa/Fe3O4‐NPs had a narrow distribution and an average particle size of 5±2 nm. Catalytic degradation studies of the synthesized Fe3O4‐NPs exhibited efficient reduction of methyl orange (MO) dye. The degradation of MO catalysed by H. sabdariffa/Fe3O4‐NPs follow the pseudo‐first order kinetics, with a rate constant of 0.0328 s−1 (R2=0.9866). Moreover, in electrochemical sensing studies, the anodic peak current of nitrite (NO2−) for H. sabdariffa/Fe3O4‐NPs/GCE showed a linear relationship with its concentration within the range of 0.5–7.5 mM, achieving a detection limit of 0.29 μM. These findings demonstrate that the modified electrode with Fe3O4‐NPs synthesized using H. sabdariffa leaf extract serve as a novel electrochemical sensor for determining NO2− with high sensitivity and reproducibility.

Green synthesis of magnetite iron oxide nanoparticles using Azadirachta indica leaf extract loaded on reduced graphene oxide and degradation of methylene blue

In the current arena, new-generation functional nanomaterials are the key players for smart solutions and applications including environmental decontamination of pollutants. Among the plethora of new-generation nanomaterials, graphene-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites are in the driving seat surpassing their counterparts due to their unique physicochemical characteristics and superior surface chemistry. The purpose of the present research was to synthesize and characterize magnetite iron oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (FeNPs/rGO) via a green approach and test its application in the degradation of methylene blue. The modified Hummer's protocol was adopted to synthesize graphene oxide (GO) through a chemical exfoliation approach using a graphitic route. Leaf extract of Azadirachta indica was used as a green reducing agent to reduce GO into reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Then, using the green deposition approach and Azadirachta indica leaf extract, a nanocomposite comprising magnetite iron oxides and reduced graphene oxide i.e., FeNPs/rGO was synthesized. During the synthesis of functionalized FeNPs/rGO, Azadirachta indica leaf extract acted as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent. The final synthesized materials were characterized and analyzed using an array of techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction analysis, and UV–visible spectrophotometry. The UV–visible spectrum was used to evaluate the optical characteristics and band gap. Using the FT-IR spectrum, functional groupings were identified in the synthesized graphene-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites. The morphology and elemental analysis of nanomaterials and nanocomposites synthesized via the green deposition process were investigated using SEM–EDX. The GO, rGO, FeNPs, and FeNPs/rGO showed maximum absorption at 232, 265, 395, and 405 nm, respectively. FTIR spectrum showed different functional groups (OH, COOH, C=O), C–O–C) modifying material surfaces. Based on Debye Sherrer's equation, the mean calculated particle size of all synthesized materials was < 100 nm (GO = 60–80, rGO = 90–95, FeNPs = 70–90, Fe/GO = 40–60, and Fe/rGO = 80–85 nm). Graphene-based nanomaterials displayed rough surfaces with clustered and spherical shapes and EDX analysis confirmed the presence of both iron and oxygen in all the nanocomposites. The final nanocomposites produced via the synthetic process degraded approximately 74% of methylene blue. Based on the results, it is plausible to conclude that synthesized FeNPs/rGO nanocomposites can also be used as a potential photocatalyst degrader for other different dye pollutants due to their lower band gap.

The impact of ammonium hydroxide flow rate on iron oxide nanoparticle hydrodynamic size and colloidal stability

Precise control over the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles is essential to achieving optimal particle characteristics such as size, hydrodynamic size, polydispersity index, and zeta potential, all of which significantly influence colloidal stability. The commonly used co-precipitation technique often leads to high polydispersity and variable particle sizes, resulting in poor colloidal stability. This study demonstrates that varying the ammonium hydroxide flow rate during co-precipitation significantly affects particle size, hydrodynamic size, aggregation, and colloidal stability. An optimal flow rate of 4.25 mmol/min produced smaller, more uniform, and colloidally stable nanoparticles. Nanoparticle tracking analysis showed that this flow rate resulted in the smallest and most consistent hydrodynamic size of 123.3 ± 0.7 nm, while both higher and lower flow rates yielded larger and more polydisperse particles, up to 155.8 ± 20 nm. Dynamic light scattering confirmed that the 4.25 mmol/min rate produced the lowest polydispersity index of 0.21 ± 0.04, indicating the highest uniformity. Additionally, UV-Vis measurements demonstrated that nanoparticles synthesized at this optimal flow rate exhibited minimal changes in absorbance over 24 h, indicating superior colloidal stability. This study highlights the importance of optimizing the flow rate during the co-precipitation synthesis of IONPs to control particle hydrodynamic size and polydispersity, which are crucial parameters for numerous biomedical, chemical, and environmental applications.

Eco-Friendly Mycogenic Synthesis of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Using Volvariella volvacea and Unveiling its Potential as Antibiofilm and Anticancer Agents

This research explores the eco-friendly creation of functional, biocompatible nanomaterials through green chemistry, utilizing natural extracts over chemicals to produce metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. The study focuses on iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized with Volvariella volvacea (GIONP) and evaluates their physical, chemical, and biological traits, including their anticancer capabilities, against traditionally made IONPs (CIONP). GIONPs, confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering, showed enhanced stability and consistent size distribution. They also demonstrated smaller sizes via -Field Emission scanning electron microscopy analysis, and X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared studies verified their crystalline structure and organic functional groups. Notably, GIONPs exhibited strong antioxidant properties, low toxicity to blood cells, promising for intravenous use, and greater antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against various bacterial strains than CIONPs. The study revealed that both GIONPs and CIONPs exhibit a similar degree of toxicity towards MDA-MB 231 cancer cells. The internalization of GIONPs within these cells was verified through a Prussian blue assay and further supported by the concentration-dependent increase in intracellular iron levels post-treatment. These findings underscore the successful formulation of GIONPs that are not only biocompatible and eco-friendly but also capped with bioactive compounds, highlighting their promising applications in the field of biomedicine.

Assessing the Effect of Fe2O3 Nanoparticles on Catalase Activity in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis: In Vitro study and Molecular Docking

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums and underlying bone. It is primarily caused by a bacterial infection resulting from poor oral hygiene practices. The main objectives of the current study were to synthesize iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3-NPs) and their characteristics were analyzed through UV, SEM, and X-ray analysis. Additionally, the dispersion of the synthesized NPs was investigated using UV and TEM techniques. The study also aimed to assess the kinetic behavior and the impact of Fe2O3-NPs on catalase activity in the saliva of the patient and control groups. The findings revealed a significant increase in catalase activity (p&gt;0.05) in both serum and saliva of all patient groups compared to the control group. The UV-visible spectrum shows that the absorption peaks for synthesized α- and γ-iron oxide nanoparticles was at 225 nm. According to the SEM image analysis, the primary particle size of the nano-particles is approximately 26.8 nm. The X-ray diffraction results indicate that the Fe2O3-NPs range in size from 14 nm to 26 nm. UV and TEM study conclude that water a suitable solvent for Fe2O3-NPs dispersion on kinetic study of catalase (CAT) activity. The kinetic data cleared that the α-Fe2O3-NPs have an inhibitory effect for the total activity of salivary CAT in the samples of both healthy and patients with chronic periodontitis. Lineweaver–Burk graph showed that (α-Fe2O3) inhibit catalase by un comp. inhibition. γ-Fe2O3-NPs inhibited total salivary CAT activity in healthy and patients with chronic periodontitis samples. Lineweaver –Burk graph showed that (γ-Fe2O3) inhibit catalase by uncompetitive inhibition.

Scaling study of miniaturised continuous stirred tank reactors via residence time distribution analysis and application in the production of iron oxide nanoparticles

Magnetically agitated miniaturised continuous stirred tank reactors (mCSTRs) are an attractive platform for the intensification of chemical reactions involving solids by combining active stirring and intensified heat and mass transfer due to their small dimensions. This work investigated the operation of mCSTRs at flowrates up to 60 ml/min (space time of 3 s per tank) as a means of increasing the throughput of fast reactions. Investigation of the residence time distribution under varying operational (flowrate, stirrer rotational speed) and reactor geometrical (stirred volume, stir bar size) parameters, showed deviation from the ideal CSTR behaviour at increasing flowrates, which could be mitigated by keeping the stir bar length close to the tank diameter, increasing stirrer rotational speed, and using larger tank sizes. Assembling mCSTRs into cascades did not amplify non-ideal behaviour and allowed narrowing the residence time distribution at high throughput. Various configurations of mCSTR cascades were evaluated for the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) via iron chloride co-precipitation with NaOH, demonstrating the importance of residence time distribution (RTD) control when increasing the throughput of nanoparticle production. Using a 5 × 3 ml mCSTR cascade for the core formation followed by a 5 × 3 ml mCSTR cascade for deagglomeration/stabilisation, the IONP flow synthesis was scaled successfully, producing high quality nanoparticles (7.3 ± 2 nm) at 60.5 ml/min (l/h scale).

One Pot Facile Bio-Synthesis of Anti-angiogenic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Using the Bio-Reductant Sida spinosa

Abstract Owing to the superior characteristics of the iron oxide nanoparticles Fe2O3 (SS-Fe) attracted a lot of attentions in various applications due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Moreover, due to their excellent surface area, compatible nano size spherical shape and ecofriendly synthesis route make them preferable and prudent in industrial and pharmacological applications. Based on this view, it aims to the bio-fabrication of iron oxide nanoparticles Fe2O3 (SS-Fe) by Sida spinosa extract as bio-reductant and stabilizing agent. The reports reveal that the nanoparticles have effective pharmacological applications. Highly economical and environmentally benign methodology supports the derivation of Fe2O3 (SS-Fe) nanoparticles in high yield. The SEM images reveals that, Fe2O3 (SS-Fe) nanoparticles possess spherical shape and the size of 81.72nm. The corresponding Fe-O band observed at 560.93 cm−1 indicates the formation of the nanoparticles. The EDX signals further confirms the nanoparticles by the peaks obtained for iron and oxygen atoms only. The absorbance peak at 374.00nm in UV-Visible spectrum evidently proves the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles. The λex = 645.18nm of the emission spectrum further supports the confirmation. The fabricated iron oxide nanoparticles show moderate antibacterial and a good antifungal efficacy. The iron oxide nanoparticles effectively inhibit the protein supply to the cancer cells which were injected to the egg yolk at 50µg/ml concentration gives 60.86% of inhibition.

Black seed assisted synthesis, characterization, free radical scavenging, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity of iron oxide nanoparticles

Iron nanoparticles comprise a significant class of inorganic nanoparticles, which discover applications in various zones by prudence of their few exciting properties. This study achieved the green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) by black cumin seed (Nigella sativa) extract, which acts as a reducing and capping agent. The iron nanoparticles and black cumin extract were synthesized in three different concentrations: (01:01, 02:04,01:04). UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD, FTIR, and AFM characterized the synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles. UV-visible spectra show the maximum absorbance peak of 01:01 concentration at 380 nm. The other concentrations, such as 02:04, peaked at 400 nm and 01:04 at 680 nm, confirming the formation of iron oxide nanoparticles. AFM analysis reveals the spherical shape of iron oxide nanoparticles. The XRD spectra reveal the (fcc) cubic crystal structure of the iron oxide nanoparticles. The FTIR analysis’s peaks at 457.13, 455.20, and 457.13 cm-1 depict the characteristic iron nanoparticle synthesis. The black cumin extract-mediated iron oxide nanoparticles show substantial antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in a dose-dependent manner.

Iron oxide Green synthesized nanoparticles for improved performance in Monolithic Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

In order to improve photovoltaic efficiency in Monolithic Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (MDSSCs), this study examined the effects of incorporating green produced iron oxide nanoparticles to a nanoporous carbon counter electrode. An extract from the leaves of Ocimum gratissimum was effectively used to synthesize iron oxide nanoparticles. The development of iron oxide nanoparticles was verified by optical absorption in the 350–450 nm range. With an average crystallite size of 47.9 nm, XRD patterns demonstrated the crystalline nature of the Iron oxide nanoparticles. Chemical bonds that may responsible for the nanoparticle production were found using FTIR investigations. An impressive 135.3% boost in efficiency was recorded for cell containing the Iron oxide nanoparticles, according to the MDSSC performance evaluation where DSSC without nanoparticles had a lower solar-to-electric power conversion efficiency of 1.7%, an open circuit voltage of 0.2625 V, a short-circuit current of 0.0723 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.3630. The FeO CEs cell had an open-circuit voltage of 0.4274 V, a short-circuit current of 0.1042 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.46. Their solar-to-electric power conversion efficiency was 4.0%. The potential of incorporating green-synthesised iron oxide nanoparticles into MDSSC counter electrode was shown by their great biocompatibility and even dispersion.

Solution combustion synthesis of iron-based magnetic nanoparticles: influence of inert gas pressure

We report the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles using solution combustion synthesis, focusing on the controlled manipulation of material characteristics, such as particle size, phase composition, and magnetic properties, by applying external inert gas pressure. It was shown that variation of nitrogen gas pressure in the reactor in the range 0.1 to 1.1 MPa changed the time-temperature history of the process and resulted in the gradual change of phase composition of the fabricated materials along the FeO → FeO∙Fe2O3 → Fe2O3 route. The particle size varied in the 50–400 nm range, with a maximum for powder synthesized at a pressure of 0.25 MPa. For magnetic fluid hyperthermia, the critical parameter is specific loss power. It was demonstrated that this parameter can be optimized by gas pressure variation. The maximum specific loss power measured under conditions suitable for magnetic hyperthermia (magnetic field 33.5 mT and frequency 259.6 kHz) appears to be 174 W/g. The proposed innovative approach is an effective tool for controlling the synthesis of various nanoparticles with desired properties.

Biogenic Synthesis of Silver and Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Using Aronia prunifolia Leaf Extract and Its Inhibitory Action Against Pathogenic Fungi

Because of the environment and abundant renewable resources, exploiting plant extracts to form metallic nanoparticles has become a promising alternative to chemical and physical methods. Numerous studies have shown that nanoparticles of silver (AgNPs) and iron oxide (Fe2O3NPs) have inhibitory effects against pathogenic fungi. In this study, we used the leaf extract of Aronia prunifolia to generate biogenic AgNPs and FeNPs, aiming to demonstrate the impact of nanoparticles on pathogenic fungi. Nanoparticles are characterized by UV-Vis, X-ray diffraction, EDX spectrum, and SEM techniques. Leaf extracts used for nanosynthesis yielded silver and iron oxide nanoparticles with distinct color changes and absorption peaks, showcasing tetragonal, pentagonal, and hexagonal shapes (15-50 nm) for silver and spherical morphology (16-60 nm) for iron oxide. The antifungal effectiveness of nanoparticles against Aspergillus fumigatus, Rhizoctonia solani Ag4 HgII, and Aspergillus flavus was investigated using a well diffusion method. Inhibition zones, ranging from 12.5 to 35.0 mm for AgNPs and 7.1 to 17.1 mm for FeNPs at concentrations of 10 to 30 µg/ml respectively, demonstrated the superior inhibitory potential of AgNPs over FeNPs. This study aims to address a gap in the literature by examining the inhibitory effects of green AgNPs and FeNPs on pathogenic fungi. Encased nanoparticles can be very useful in treating fungal infections; this will be the first investigation into the production of nanoparticles from A. prunifolia leaves.

Extraction of Bioactive Secondary Metabolites from Citrus Maxima Peel Via Pressurized Hot Water Extractor for the Synthesis of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Using bioactive secondary metabolites (BSM) from Citrus maxima peel extract, this work investigated a green method of synthesizing magnetite iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NPs). The BSM acts as a reducing cum stabilizing agent in the process. The optimization of the BSM parameters were conducted through response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal condition obtained in this study for pressurized hot water extractor (PHWE) extraction was temperature of 94.96 °C, solvent-to-solid ratio of 29.7 ml/g and extraction time of 27.6 min. BSM Yield of 49.31 % could be obtained based on this condition. The formation of Fe3O4 NPs were detected using the FTIR analysis with the absorption peaks observed at around 590 and 580 cm−1. X-ray diffraction results matched standard magnetite Fe3O4 patterns with planes at (220), (311), (400), (511) and (440). Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) results showed that the magnetite Fe3O4 NPs synthesized in this study predominantly appeared in spherical shape. The extraction process's kinetics were examined using various empirical models, including the Elovich’s model, Peleg’s model, Power law and parabolic diffusion model. All applied models were found to be well fitted with the measured data from experiment, with R2 values exceeding 0.9. Notably, the Peleg’s model exhibited the highest R2, the smallest RMSD, and the least significant p-values, indicating its superior performance.

Syzygium aromaticum-mediated green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles for efficient heavy metal removal from aqueous solutions

The current study focused on the environmentally friendly synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) using ferric nitrate Fe(NO3)3 9H2O as a precursor and aqueous Syzygium aromaticum (clove) extract as a reducing agent. Several analytical methods, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis.) spectroscopy, were used to confirm the synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles. These procedures were carried out to learn more about the surface shape and chemical composition of the produced iron oxide nanoparticles. The mean size of iron nanoparticles was determined by TEM examination to be 4.7 nm. The characterization revealed that the primary component of iron nanoparticles was magnetite when the Syzygium aromaticum extract was utilized as a reducing agent for Fe3+. For application, synthesized material was used to remove the harmful Cr (VI) ions from an aqueous solution. The batch adsorption approach was utilized to maximize the effects of significant elements such as pH, adsorbent dose, treatment duration, and initial Cr (VI) ions concentration to achieve the highest removal of Cr (VI) ions. The experimental adsorption data were fitted using various isotherm and kinetic adsorption models.
