Synthetic Strategies to Extended Aromatic Covalent Organic Frameworks.

π‑Conjugated materials are highly attractive owing to their unique optical and electronic properties. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer a great opportunity for precise arrangement of building units in a π-conjugated crystalline matrix and tuning of the properties through choice of functionalities or post-synthetic modification. With this review, we aim at summarizing both the most representative as well as emerging strategies for the synthesis of π-conjugated COFs. We give examples of direct synthesis methods with large, π-extended building blocks. COFs featuring fully conjugated linkages such as vinylene, pyrazine, and azole are discussed. Then, post-synthetic modification methods that result in the extension of the COF p-system are reviewed. Throughout, mechanistic insights are presented when available. In the context of their utilization as film devices, we conduct a concise survey of the prominent COF layer deposition techniques reported and their aptness for the deposition of fused aromatic systems.

Analysis of COF-300 synthesis: probing degradation processes and 3D electron diffraction structure.

Although COF-300 is often used as an example to study the synthesis and structure of (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs), knowledge of the underlying synthetic processes is still fragmented. Here, an optimized synthetic procedure based on a combination of linker protection and modulation was applied. Using this approach, the influence of time and temperature on the synthesis of COF-300 was studied. Synthesis times that were too short produced materials with limited crystallinity and porosity, lacking the typical pore flexibility associated with COF-300. On the other hand, synthesis times that weretoo long could be characterized by loss of crystallinity and pore order by degradation of the tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)methane (TAM) linker used. The presence of the degradation product was confirmed by visual inspection, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As TAM is by far the most popular linker for the synthesis of 3D COFs, this degradation process might be one of the reasons why the development of 3D COFs is still lagging compared with 2D COFs. However, COF crystals obtained via an optimized procedure could be structurally probed using 3D electron diffraction (3DED). The 3DED analysis resulted in a full structure determination of COF-300 at atomic resolution with satisfying data parameters. Comparison of our 3DED-derived structural model with previously reported single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for this material, as well as parameters derived from the Cambridge Structural Database, demonstrates the high accuracy of the 3DED method for structure determination. This validation might accelerate the exploitation of 3DED as a structure determination technique for COFs and other porous materials.

Photochemical and Patternable Synthesis of 2D Covalent Organic Framework Thin Film Using Dynamic Liquid/Solid Interface.

2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highly porous crystalline materials with promising applications in organic electronics. Current methods involve either on-surface synthesis (solid surface) or interfacial synthesis (liquid/liquid, liquid/gas interface) to create thin films for these applications, each with its drawbacks. On-surface synthesis can lead to contamination from COF powder or unreacted chemicals, while interfacial synthesis risks damaging the film during post-transfer processes. These challenges necessitate the development of alternative synthesis methods for high-quality 2D COF films. This study presents a novel approach for synthesizing homogeneous 2D COF thin films by combining photochemistry and a liquid-flowing system. Leveraging previous work on liquid flow systems to prevent contamination during solvothermal synthesis, this approach to the photochemical method, resulting in the synthesis of high-crystalline 2D COF films with tunable thickness is adopted. The photochemical approach offers spatially controllable energy sources, enabling patternable COF synthesis. Notably, it is successfully fabricated ultrasmooth patterned 2D COF films on hexagonal boron nitride, offering a streamlined process for optoelectronic device fabrication without additional pre, post-processing steps.

Alkali metals (Li, Na, and K) and multivalent metals (Zn, Mg, Ca, and Al) have become star anodes for developing high-energy-density rechargeable batteries due to their high theoretical capacity and excellent conductivity. However, the inevitable dendrites and unstable interfaces of metal anodes pose challenges to the safety and stability of batteries. To address these issues, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as emerging materials, have been widely investigated due to their regular porous structure, flexible molecular design, and high specific surface area. In this minireview, we summarize the research progress of COFs in stabilizing metal anodes. First, we present the research origins of metal anodes and delve into their advantages and challenges as anodes based on the physical/chemical properties of alkali and multivalent metals. Then, special attention has been paid to the application of COFs in the host design of metal anodes, artificial solid electrolyte interfaces, electrolyte additives, solid-state electrolytes, and separator modifications. Finally, a new perspective is provided for the research of metal anodes from the molecular design, pore modulation, and synthesis of COFs.

Microwave-assisted Fast Synthesis of a Donor-Acceptor Covalent Organic Framework towards Photooxidative Amidation Catalysis.

This photocatalytic approach works well with a variety of substituted aromatic aldehydes having electron-withdrawing or donating groups and cyclic, acyclic, primary or secondary amines with moderate to high yield. Furthermore, catalytic mechanism was established by monitoring the real-time reaction progress through in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopic (DRIFTS) study.

Synthesis of covalent organic framework with amino affinity groups for enhanced selective adsorption of diclofenac sodium from aqueous solution

The presence of diclofenac sodium (DCF) is widespread in environmental waters, leading to issues for ecosystems and human health. Hence, the removal of DCF from aquatic environments is crucial. This study innovatively designed and proposed an urchin-like covalent organic framework (COFs) with affinity groups to enhance its selective adsorption capacity for DCF. As a proof-of-concept, an amine-functionalized COF (TAPT-DVA-NH2) was synthesized via the thiol-ene click reaction between vinyl-COF (TAPT-DVA) and cysteamine for the purpose of adsorbing DCF from water. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms, the influences of pH, ionic strength, and regeneration of TAPT-DVA-NH2 for DCF were investigated thoroughly. The synthesized COF TAPT-DVA-NH2 exhibited exceptionally rapid and efficient DCF capture. The rate constant k2 was 0.0196 g/mg/min, and the maximum adsorption capacity could reach approximately 398.4 mg/g. The exceptional adsorption performance of COF TAPT-DVA-NH2 was attributed to electrostatic, π-π, hydrophobic and hydrogen bond interactions. The adsorption efficiency of DCF on COF TAPT-DVA-NH2 remained above 95 % even after five regeneration cycles. In addition, the self-made adsorbent efficiently adsorbed DCF from real environmental water samples. Thus, this highly efficient and recyclable adsorbent holds significant potential for DCF removal from aquatic environments.

Ligand and band engineering-induced covalent organic framework-embedded Ti32 Oxo-cluster gels-based Z-scheme heterojunction for boosting the photocatalytic degradation performance of tetracycline

Designing and synthesizing highly efficient photocatalysts with proper energy band structures, which can accelerate the degradation of antibiotics, is crucial and challenging. Herein, by introducing a simple ligand engineering strategy, we ingeniously developed a novel approach for facile synthesis of covalent organic framework (COF) embedded and oxygen vacancies (OV) in-situ doped Ti32 oxo-cluster gels-based Z-scheme heterojunction, COF@OV-Ti32-gels (CT-X). This strategy has led to a remarkable improvement in the photodegradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), increasing from 15% (pure Ti32 crystals) to an impressive 93.7%. The heterojunctions, which possess modified bandgap structures due to the presence of oxygen defects, exhibit superior photo-induced charge separation efficiency compared to Ti32 without such defects. This enhanced utilization of sunlight results in highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of TC via a built-in electric field. Intriguingly, the CT-X photocatalysts, synthesized with a unique heterojunction structure, exhibit the ability to achieve full-time domain degradation of TC. Notably, CT-X can effectively degrade TC in the absence of light, and its degradation capability is significantly enhanced upon exposure to visible light. Furthermore, the superoxide radical (•O2¯) was evidenced to play a crucial role in the photocatalytic process, and the corresponding degradation mechanism was also depicted.

Shape-controllable preparation of covalent organic frameworks and their application in efficient removal of aromatic organic pollutants

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as well-ordered porous materials, have garnered considerable attention in the adsorption of environmental contaminants due to their long-range ordered crystal structure, great specific surface area, etc. In this work, alcoholic solvents were used as the reaction media to successfully synthesize three COFs with regular crystalline structures under nearly ambient conditions, whereas conventional synthetic techniques have not been documented for the synthesis of TAPB-TFPT COFs. Inspired by the excellent physical and chemical properties of the generated rod-like TAPB-DHTP COFs, which can be served as an ideal solid adsorbent for aromatic organic pollutant adsorption and removal. It is worth mentioning that TAPB-DHTP COFs showed fast adsorption kinetic rates (within 40 min) and high adsorption capacities (288 mg/g, 87.7 mg/g and 105 mg/g) for naphthalene, 2-naphthol and 2-naphthylamine, superior to most reported adsorbents. The effective removal of aromatic organic pollutants is ascribed to numerous non-covalent interactions between targets and TAPB-DHTP COFs, including π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding. Thus, this research might present a promising route to the green preparation of COFs and their prospective application in environmental restoration.

Covalent organic frameworks: spotlight on applications in the pharmaceutical arena.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have much potential in the field of analytical separation research due to their distinctive characteristics, including easy modification, low densities, large specific surface areas and permanent porosity. This article provides a historical overview of the synthesis and broad perspectives on the applications of COFs. The use of COF-based membranes in gas separation, water treatment (desalination, heavy metals and dye removal), membrane filtration, photoconduction, sensing and fuel cells is also covered. However, these COFs also demonstrate great promise as solid-phase extraction sorbents and solid-phase microextraction coatings. In addition to various separation applications, this work aims to highlight important advancements in the synthesis of COFs for chiral and isomeric compounds.

Increasing the Accessibility of Internal Catalytic Sites in Covalent Organic Frameworks by Introducing a Bicontinuous Mesostructure.

Introducing continuous mesochannels into covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to increase the accessibility of their inner active sites has remained a major challenge. Here, we report the synthesis of COFs with an ordered bicontinuous mesostructure, via a block copolymer self-assembly-guided nanocasting strategy. Three different mesostructured COFs are synthesized, including two covalent triazine frameworks and one vinylene-linked COF. The new materials are endowed with a hierarchical meso/microporous architecture, in which the mesochannels exhibit an ordered shifted double diamond (SDD) topology. The hierarchically porous structure can enable efficient hole-electron separation and smooth mass transport to the deep internal of the COFs and consequently high accessibility of their active catalytic sites. Benefiting from this hierarchical structure, these COFs exhibit excellent performance in visible-light-driven catalytic NO removal with a high conversion percentage of up to 51.4 %, placing them one of the top reported NO-elimination photocatalysts. This study represents the first case of introducing a bicontinuous structure into COFs, which opens a new avenue for the synthesis of hierarchically porous COFs and for increasing the utilization degree of their internal active sites.

Downsizing Porphyrin Covalent Organic Framework Particles Using Protected Precursors for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising electrocatalyst platforms owing to their designability, porosity, and stability. Recently, COFs with various chemical structures are developed as efficient electrochemical CO2 reduction catalysts. However, controlling the morphology of COF catalysts remains a challenge, which can limit their electrocatalytic performance. Especially, while porphyrin COFs show promising catalytic properties, their particle size is mostly large and uncontrolled because of the severe aggregation of crystallites. In this work, a new synthetic methodology for rationally downsized COF catalyst particles is reported, where a tritylated amine is employed as a novel protected precursor for COF synthesis. Trityl protection provides high solubility to a porphyrin precursor, while its deprotection proceeds in situ under typical COF synthesis conditions. Subsequent homogeneous nucleation and colloidal growth yield smaller COF particles than a conventional synthesis, owing to suppressed crystallite aggregation. The downsized COF particles exhibit superior catalytic performance in electrochemical CO2 reduction, with higher CO production rate and faradaic efficiency compared to conventional COF particles. The improved performance is attributed to the higher contact area with a conductive agent. This study reveals particle size as an important factor for the evaluation of COF electrocatalysts and provides a strategy to control it.

Rational Synthesis of Functionalized Covalent Organic Frameworks via Four-Component Reaction.

The construction of function-oriented covalent organic frameworks (COFs) remains a challenge as it requires simultaneous consideration of diversified structures, robust linkage, and tailorable functionalities. Herein, we report the rational synthesis of functionalized COFs via a four-component reaction strategy. Through the four-component Debus-Radziszewski reaction, 11 N-substituted imidazole-based COFs with diversified structures were facilely constructed from readily available building blocks. By forming the N-substituted imidazole linkage, these synthesized COFs displayed ultrastability toward strong acids and base. Moreover, the four components reaction allows the rational synthesis of COFs with tailorable functionalities. As an example, the phosphonate-functionalized COF (LZU-530) was rationally constructed for the efficient adsorption of uranium(VI). The uranium(VI) uptake of LZU-530 reaches up to 95 mg·g-1 in 2 M HNO3, which is the highest uptake of the existing organic porous materials under such harsh conditions. Our results highlight the use of multicomponent reaction for the rational synthesis of robust and functionalized COFs toward targeted applications.

Linker-Guided Growth of Single-Crystal Covalent Organic Frameworks.

The core features of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystallinity and porosity. However, the synthesis of single-crystal COFs with monomers of diverse reactivity and adjustment of their pore structures remain challenging. Here, we show that linkers that can react with a node to form single-crystal COFs can guide other linkers that form either COFs or amorphous polymers with the node to gain single-crystal COFs with mixed components, which are homogeneous on the unit cell scale with controlled ratios. With the linker-guided crystal growth method, we created nine types of single-crystal COFs with up to nine different components, which are more complex than any known crystal. The structure of the crystal adapted approximately to that of the main component, and its pore volume could be expanded up to 8.8%. Different components lead to complex and diverse pore structures and offer the possibilities to gain positive synergies, as exemplified by a bicomponent COF with 2200 and 733% SO2 uptake capacity of that of the two pure-component counterparts at 298 K and 0.002 bar. The selectivity for separation of SO2/CO2 ranges from 1230 to 4247 for flue gas based on ideal adsorbed solution theory, recording porous crystals. The bicomponent COF also exhibits a 1300% retention time of its pure-component counterparts for SO2 in a dynamic column breakthrough experiment for deep desulfurization.

Adsorption of typical dyes in water by sponge based covalent organic frameworks: Pore size and mechanism

This study addressed the ambiguity surrounding the relationship between the pore size of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their adsorption capacity and rate. To achieve this, we synthesized COFs with five distinct pore sizes (COF1-COF5) and conducted a comprehensive analysis using kinetic models. Our findings indicated that the adsorption capacity and rate of methyl orange (MO) increased linearly with the pore size of COFs, from 1.25 nm to 2.57 nm. Notably, COF3, with a pore size of 2.57 nm, exhibited the highest adsorption performance for MO, boasting an impressive capacity of 43.07 mg/g. Furthermore, we tackled the challenge of COFs powder recovery by employing a one-pot synthesis method to create SP-COFs, where COFs powder was loaded onto polyurethane sponge. Through rigorous adsorption and analytical experiments, we demonstrated that SP-COF3 achieved rapid recovery while efficiently adsorbing MO, maintaining a high removal efficiency of over 95% even after 8 reuse cycles. The mechanism underlying MO adsorption on SP-COF3 was attributed to electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding, with the possibility of π-π interaction also being considered. Overall, this study provides valuable new insights into the tailored synthesis of COFs with specific structures and functionalities, shedding light on the crucial relationship between pore size and adsorption behavior. The development of SP-COFs presents a promising approach to enhance the practical application of COFs as highly efficient adsorbents.

A New Porphyrin-based Covalent Organic Framework with High Iodine Capture Capacity and I-doping Enhanced Conductivity.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous organic materials with well-defined and uniform structure. The material is an excellent candidate as a solid adsorbent for iodine adsorption. In the present study, we report the synthesis of COF with porphyrin moiety, TF-TA-COF, by solvothermal reaction, which was characterized by XRD, solid-state 13 C NMR, IR, TGA, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis. TF-TA-COF showed a high specific surface area of 443 m2 g-1 , and exhibited good adsorption performance for iodine vapor, with an adsorption capacity of 2.74 g g-1 . XPS and Raman spectrum indicated that a hybrid of physisorption and chemisorption took place between host COF and iodine molecules. The electric properties of iodine-loaded TF-TA-COF were also studied. After doped with iodine, the conductivity of the material increased by more than 5 orders of magnitude. The photoconductivity of I2 -doped COF was also studied and TF-TA-COF showed doping-enhanced photocurrent generation.
