Optimizing Thermoelectric Properties through Compositional Engineering in Ag-Deficient AgSbTe2 Synthesized by Arc Melting.

Thermoelectric materials offer a promising avenue for energy management, directly converting heat into electrical energy. Among them, AgSbTe2 has gained significant attention and continues to be a subject of research at further improving its thermoelectric performance and expanding its practical applications. This study focuses on Ag-deficient Ag0.7Sb1.12Te2 and Ag0.7Sb1.12Te1.95Se0.05 materials, examining the impact of compositional engineering within the AgSbTe2 thermoelectric system. These materials have been rapidly synthesized using an arc-melting technique, resulting in the production of dense nanostructured pellets. Detailed analysis through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals the presence of a layered nanostructure, which significantly influences the thermoelectric properties of these materials. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction reveals significant changes in the lattice parameters and atomic displacement parameters (ADPs) that suggest a weakening of bond order in the structure. The thermoelectric characterization highlights the enhanced power factor of Ag-deficient materials that, combined with the low glass-like thermal conductivity, results in a significant improvement in the figure of merit, achieving zT values of 1.25 in Ag0.7Sb1.12Te2 and 1.01 in Ag0.7Sb1.12Te1.95Se0.05 at 750 K.

Structure and equation of state of Ti-bearing davemaoite: new insights into the chemical heterogeneity in the lower mantle

Abstract Davemaoite (CaSiO3 perovskite) is considered the third most abundant phase in the pyrolytic lower mantle and the second most abundant phase in the subducted mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB). During the partial melting of the pyrolytic upper mantle, incompatible titanium (Ti) becomes enriched in the basaltic magma, forming Ti-rich MORB. Davemaoite is considered an important Ti-bearing mineral in subducted slabs by forming a Ca(Si,Ti)O3 solid solution. However, the crystal structure and compressibility of Ca(Si,Ti)O3 perovskite solid solution at relevant pressure and temperature conditions were not systematically investigated. In this study, we investigated the structure and equations of state of Ca(Si0.83Ti0.17)O3 and Ca(Si0.75Ti0.25)O3 perovskites at room temperature up to 82 GPa and 64 GPa, respectively, by synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD). We found that both Ca(Si0.83Ti0.17)O3 and Ca(Si0.75Ti0.25)O3 perovskites have a tetragonal structure up to the maximum pressures investigated. Based on the observed data and compared to pure CaSiO3 davemaoite, both Ca(Si0.83Ti0.17)O3 and Ca(Si0.75Ti0.25)O3 perovskites are expected to be less dense up to the core-mantle boundary (CMB), and specifically ~1-2 % less dense than CaSiO3 davemaoite in the pressure range of the transition zone (15-25 GPa). Our results suggest that the presence of Ti-bearing davemaoite phases may result in a reduction in the average density of the subducting slabs, which in turn promotes their stagnation in the lower mantle. The presence of low-density Ti-bearing davemaoite phases and subduction of MORB in the lower mantle may also explain the seismic heterogeneity in the lower mantle, such as large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs).

Novel bulk triaxial residual stress mapping in an additive manufactured bridge sample by coupling energy dispersive X-ray diffraction and contour method measurements

A novel approach for determining triaxial residual stress states by coupling energy dispersive X-ray diffraction and contour method measurements is provided and validated in a Ti‐5Al‐5V‐5Mo‐3Cr additive manufactured (AM) bridge sample. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) can provide relatively fine spatial resolution (on the order of 10–100 µm) for mapping 3D elastic strain fields within a sample. However, for samples with dimensions larger than one or two centimeters the path length can get prohibitive as both constant wavelength and energy dispersive SXRD are based upon transmission measurements. As an example, for a plate-like sample geometry where the thickness is limited (less than a centimeter) it is trivial to measure the longitudinal and height direction elastic strain components with excellent in-plane spatial resolution (∼100 µm) and a somewhat lower through-thickness resolution (10–15 times larger) but obtaining the through thickness component is often not possible as the beam path must be parallel to one of the large dimensions of the plate. While small samples of low Z-number alloys (e.g., Ti or Al) allow determination of the three elastic strain components, this is often not the case for higher Z alloys (e.g., Fe or Ni) or large samples where some strain components can be indeterminable. To overcome these limitations, this work applies a combination of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and the contour method (a mechanical relaxation technique), to determine the triaxial stress state. This novel combination is demonstrated and validated in a relatively small additive manufactured sample where all three orthogonal strain components are accessible via X-ray diffraction for stress determination. The paper also explores methods for determining the strain-free lattice parameter, typically obtained from a small stress-free reference sample. This work shows that a small size AM sample is not stress free, producing unreliable magnitudes of strain and stress. Instead, a strain-free lattice parameter is determined using residual stress equilibrium conditions, which gives consistent strain and stress trends for both X-ray diffraction (alone) and the new diffraction-contour coupling technique. This demonstrates that the coupling technique can be confidently applied to samples to determine stress when path length (size or Z-number) prohibit determination of three orthogonal strain components via diffraction.

Synchrotron based investigation of anisotropy and microstructure of wire arc additive manufactured Grade 91 steel

Additive manufacturing (AM) rapidly produces complex shapes crucial for energy technologies and engineering designs. In this work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of additive manufactured Grade 91 (modified 9Cr–1Mo) ferritic/martensitic (FM) steel were investigated. Computational thermodynamics, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and microhardness testing were utilized to quantify microstructure (crystallographic phases, microstrain), lattice parameters, and mechanical properties as functions of the build directions and post-build heat-treatment. The as-built microstructures were found to contain a large fraction of microstrain due to two-dimensional defects, and a low-carbon martensite phase (maximum value 38.4 vol%), as quantified from the X-ray diffraction analysis. It was shown that a post-build heat-treatment can effectively remove this martensitic phase and promote the formation of desired microstructures with dispersed M23C6 carbides which was consistent with Thermo-Calc predictions. From the X-ray diffraction analysis, an ∼82.5% reduction in microstrain, a 61.5% increase in the coherent grain size and complete elimination of body-centered tetragonal (BCT) phase demonstrated that an appropriate heat-treatment of AM built FM steel yields microstructures and hardness comparable to conventionally processed steel. However, based on lattice parameter and hardness map statistics, heat-treatment on the as-manufactured steel did not eliminate anisotropy.

Medium-range order structure analysis of metallic glasses based on reverse Monte Carlo modeling

The elucidation of amorphous alloy characteristics presents a formidable challenge due to the absence of crystalline arrangements and enigmatic imperfections. This study aimed to tackle this challenge through a comprehensive investigation utilizing synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS), ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, and reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modeling. The primary objective was to delve into the medium range order (MRO) structure of metallic glasses (MGs) containing CuXZr100-X, wherein X represents values of 50, 56, 60, and 64. The results obtained from this research demonstrate that an increase in the Cu atom concentration within Cu-Zr MGs leads to the formation of complete icosahedral clusters and high-coordination polyhedral connections, thereby bolstering the stability and heterogeneity of local structures. Examination of the stiff full icosahedral bones shows that defects exist in the network connections on the MRO, resulting in a lack of connectivity in the positive icosahedron. Conversely, the density of defects decreases with an increase in Cu content. The observation suggests that the observed low MRO defects in Cu64Zr36 MGs may be accountable for their excellent glass-forming ability and kinetic stability.

Structural dynamics of first-order phase transition in giant magnetocaloric La(Fe,Si)13: The free energy landscape

Maximizing the performance of magnetic refrigerators and thermomagnetic energy harvesters is imperative for their successful implementation and can be done by maximizing their operation frequency. One of the features delimiting the frequency and efficiency of such devices is the phase transition kinetics of their magnetocaloric/thermomagnetic active material. While previous studies have described the magnetic component governing the kinetics of the magnetovolume phase transition in La(Fe,Si)13 giant magnetocaloric materials, a comprehensive description of its structural component has yet to be explored. In this study, in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction is employed to describe the structural changes upon magnetic field application/removal. Long magnetic field dependent relaxation times up to a few hundred seconds are observed after the driving field is paused. The phase transition is found to be highly asymmetric upon magnetic field cycling due to the different Gibbs energy landscapes and the absence of an energy barrier upon field removal. An exponential relationship is found between the energy barriers and the relaxation times, suggesting the process is governed by a non-thermal activation over an energy barrier process. Such fundamental knowledge on first-order phase transition kinetics suggests pathways for materials optimization and smarter design of magnetic field cycling in real-life devices.

Crystal structure and synchrotron X-ray powder reference pattern for the porous pillared cyanonickelate, Ni(3-amino-4,4′-bipyridine)[Ni(CN)4

The structure of Ni(3-amino-4,4′-bipyridine)[Ni(CN)4] (or known as Ni-BpyNH2) in powder form was determined using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and refined using the Rietveld refinement technique (R = 8.8%). The orthorhombic (Cmca) cell parameters were determined to be a = 14.7218(3) Å, b = 22.6615(3) Å, c = 12.3833(3) Å, V = 4131.29(9) Å3, and Z = 8. Ni-BpyNH2 forms a 3-D network, with a 2-D Ni(CN)4 net connecting to each other via the BpyNH2 ligands. There are two independent Ni sites on the net. The 2-D nets are connected to each other via the bonding of the pyridine “N” atom to Ni2. The Ni2 site is of six-fold coordination to N with relatively long Ni2–N distances (average of 2.118 Å) as compared to the four-fold coordinated Ni1–C distances (average of 1.850 Å). The Ni(CN)4 net is arranged in a wave-like fashion. The functional group, –NH2, is disordered and was found to be in the m-position relative to the N atom of the pyridine ring. Instead of having a unique position, N has ¼ site occupancy in each of the four m-positions. The powder reference diffraction pattern for Ni-BpyNH2 was prepared and submitted to the Powder Diffraction File (PDF) at the International Centre of Diffraction Data (ICDD).

Evolution of texture and intergranular stresses of αZr and minority phases in Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube through synchrotron X-ray diffraction

This study investigates the impact of different processing steps on the crystallographic texture evolution of αZr and minority phases βZr and ωZr, and intergranular stresses as a function of grain orientation in a Zr2.5Nb pressure tube. This was done by analysis of diffraction data recorded in the 1-ID line of the Advanced Photon Source for high energy X-Rays (∼80 Kev) in transmission geometry on three samples with different processing conditions: extruded, cold rolled and after autoclaving. The crystallographic texture of both αZr and βZr phases changes slightly after cold rolling, with the Burgers orientation relationship between the two phases remaining intact. The texture of βZr and ωZr shows that βZr decomposition during thermal treatment is sensitive to grain orientation. A new method was proposed to obtain the orientation dependence of the intergranular stresses from the experimental pole figures. Intergranular stresses in αZr grains were low after extrusion, but rolling significantly increased them, with values with magnitude as higher as 350 MPa and a strong dependence on grain orientation. The autoclaving treatment leads to important stress relaxation, but the dependence on grain orientation remains. The βZr phase grains exhibit significant intergranular strains in both extruded and cold-rolled conditions; the hydrostatic part was associated to the presence of Nb in solid solution, with content of ∼20 % and an orientation dependence of approximately ±1 at%. The deviatoric strain was attributed to intergranular stresses, with stresses below 80 MPa for the extruded sample and ranging from −600 to 400 MPa after cold rolling.

Unfolding the potassium storage mechanism of tin selenides

Tin selenides have attracted great attention as anode materials for alkali metal ion batteries in recent years because of the high theoretical capacity. However, there is currently few literatures on the application of tin selenides in potassium ion battery, and the comparative research on the actual potassium storage mechanism of different tin selenides is rarely reported. Herein, tin selenides including SnSe2@C and SnSe@C are synthesized by regulating the selenization temperature, and their potassium storage performance and the mechanism have been comparatively investigated with various physicochemical techniques as well as operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is revealed that the better potassium storage performance of SnSe2@C is mainly due to the generation of highly conductive Se during the first depotassiation process, which not only participates in the subsequent potassiation/depotassiation process, but also improves the conductivity of electrode and facilitates the kinetics of K+. While the sluggish kinetics and partial irreversible decomposition of KxSe lead to the inferior potassium storage performance of SnSe@C.

Structural Properties of Some Vacancy-Ordered Platinum Halide Perovskites.

The structural changes that accompany the dehydration of Na2PtX6·6H2O (X = Cl, Br) were studied using in situ variable temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The two hexahydrates are isostructural, containing isolated PtX6 octahedra separated by Na cations. Removal of the water results in the formation of the anhydrous vacancy ordered double perovskites Na2PtX6. The Na cation is too small for the cuboctahedron site of the parent cubic structure, resulting in cooperative tilting of the PtX6 octahedra and lowering of the symmetry. Replacing Na with a larger alkali metal (K, Rb, or Cs) invariably enabled the isolation of the anhydrous hexahalide, and we found no evidence that these readily hydrated. For all cations, other than Na, it was possible to observe the archetypical cubic structure, although for the two potassium salts K2PtBr6 and K2PtI6, this was only observed above a critical temperature of 175 and 460 K, respectively. As these two samples were cooled, symmetry lowering was observed, yielding a tetragonal structure initially and ultimately a monoclinic structure: Fm3̅m → P4/mnc → P21/n. These phase transitions are associated with the onset of long-range cooperative tilting of the PtX6 octahedra described using the Glazer tilt notation as a0a0a0 → a0a0c+ → a-a-c+.

Understanding the asymmetric orientations and stress states in polycrystalline NiTi SMA by in-situ synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray diffraction

The stress-induced martensite transformations (SIMTs) dramatically affect the recoverable strain and mechanical response of polycrystalline NiTi. An in-depth understanding of the propagation manner and orientation preference of SIMTs is therefore crucial. In this work, we present a unique asymmetric anisotropy of SIMTs and lattice strains induced by Lüders-type deformation in polycrystalline NiTi, achieved through a combination of in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and uniaxial tensile loading and unloading experiments. Our experimental findings reveal that in polycrystalline NiTi under uniaxial deformation, the asymmetry of SIMTs is attributed to the inhomogeneous strain field caused by the Lüders-type mechanism. The asymmetrical SIMT starts with the forward Lüder band and disappears along with the backward Lüder band. The austenite with the favored orientation of ⟨110⟩A//loading direction (LD) transformed and recovered back at a higher rate compared to other orientations during both loading and unloading.

High-pressure phase transitions in a laser directed energy deposited Fe-33Cu Alloy

Additively manufactured Fe-Cu alloys contain both equilibrium face-centered cubic (FCC) and metastable body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure Cu precipitates depending on their size. However, the stability of these nanoscale precipitates under extreme conditions such as high pressures has not been reported. This study investigates the phase transformations and microstructural stability of laser directed energy deposition (DED-LB) made Fe67Cu33 alloy (nominal composition in at.%) under high static pressure deformation using in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction under pressure, postmortem high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In-situ XRD results reveal a reversible phase transformation from BCC to the hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure in the Fe grains at an onset pressure of 16.4 GPa, significantly higher than reported in the literature for pure Fe. Although no high-pressure phase transition was observed in the FCC Cu grains through XRD, HR-STEM analysis uncovers a phase transition to the HCP structure in nanoscale metastable BCC Cu precipitates within the BCC Fe matrix. After decompression, the Fe matrix reverted back to the BCC structure with periodic lath martensite, while regions of the nanoscale BCC Cu precipitates retained the metastable HCP structure. MD simulations support the BCC → HCP transition in the embedded nanoscale coherent Cu precipitates, consistent with the classical Burgers mechanism. Thus, by leveraging in-situ XRD observation, postmortem high-resolution S/TEM microscopy, and MD simulations, this study offers profound insights into the distinctive phase transformations induced by high pressure in DED-LB Fe67Cu33 alloy, which is distinguished by its hierarchical microstructure.

Origin of linear magnetoresistance in Bi2Te3 topological insulator: Role of surface state and defects

Connection between topological surface states (TSS) and large linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is established in tetradymite Bi2Te3 through tuning of native defects. Thorough analysis of temperature dependent synchrotron X-ray diffraction data quantifies 0-D, 1-D and 2-D defect concentrations. Plausible variation of antisite defects is explained via carrier concentration data. Resistivity data divulge contribution of mixed bulk and surface states in the synthesized samples. High Fermi velocity (∼106 ms−1) and low Fermi energy (∼14 meV) of carriers are obtained. Lower defect concentration sample emerges with high magnetoresistance (MR) and higher mobility. Weak antilocalization (WAL) effect, signature of TSS, is revealed from MR. Large (80%), non-saturating LMR along with ultrahigh mobility (∼1 m2V−1s−1) in Bi2Te3 supports the presence of TSS. Magnetoconductance data are fitted with Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka equation, obtaining further insight on WAL effect. In addition, extracted parameters like disorder correlation length and coherence length explicate the role of defect density on LMR.

Giant Negative Thermal Expansion in Ultralight NaB(CN)4.

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) is crucial for controlling the thermomechanical properties of functional materials, albeit being relatively rare. This study reports a giant NTE (αV ∼-9.2 ⋅ 10-5 K-1 , 100-200 K; αV ∼-3.7 ⋅ 10-5 K-1 , 200-650 K) observed in NaB(CN)4 , showcasing interesting ultralight properties. A comprehensive investigation involving synchrotron X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations has been conducted to explore the thermal expansion mechanism. The findings indicate that the low-frequency phonon modes play a primary role in NTE, and non-rigid vibration modes with most negative Grüneisen parameters are the key contributing factor to the giant NTE observed in NaB(CN)4 . This work presents a new material with giant NTE and ultralight mass density, providing insights for the understanding and design of novel NTE materials.

Deciphering the role of optimal P2/O3 phase fraction in enhanced cyclability and specific capacity of layered oxide cathodes

Poor cyclability and rate performance of layered oxide cathodes have impeded their deployment in Na+ batteries. Here, Mn-rich biphasic cathodes with tuned P2/O3 phase fractions were synthesized by varying Na in NaxMn0.60Ni0.30Cu0.10O2 (NMNC-x) (0.80 ≤ x ≤ 1.00) and the P2/O3 phases were confirmed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The Rietveld refinement of XRD data showed that the O3 phase fraction increased from 13 % to 89 % with increasing x from 0.80 to 1.00. The NMNC-0.90 sample (with 54 % O3 phase) demonstrated excellent rate performance (119 and 100 mAh/g at 1C and 3C, respectively) but poor cyclic stability (64 % capacity retention at 1C after 200 cycles). P2 dominant NMNC-0.80 showed exceptional rate performance (147 & 103 mAh/g at 0.1C & 3C, respectively) and O3 dominant NMNC-1.00 exhibited a high specific capacity (187 mAh/g at 0.1C). These cathodes showed excellent capacity retention of around 91 % at 1C after 200 cycles. Operando Synchrotron XRD results confirmed a reversible O3 ↔ P3 phase transformation at ∼3.4 V. Further, a significant mismatch in the levels of the strain developed in the P2 and O3 phases was observed in NMNC-0.90 sample during charge/discharge, explaining its poor cyclability. Na+ diffusion coefficients calculated from the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique were in the 10−12 − 10−10 cm2 s−1 range. This investigation shed light on the optimum P2/O3 phase fraction for designing biphasic cathodes with high specific capacity and cyclability.

Optically Electroactive Polymer Synthesized in a Liquid Crystal with Cyclosporin A─Circularly Polarized Electron Spin Resonance.

Cyclosporine A (CsA), a naturally derived biomaterial and physiologically active substance, is commonly used as an immunosuppressant. In this study, CsA was revealed to function as a chiral inducer of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) with a high helical twisting power. CsA induced helical structures in 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl, a synthetic liquid crystal (LC) used for general purposes. Electrochemical polymerization in CLC with CsA was also performed. The polymer prepared in CLC showed electro-optical activity via chiral induction by CsA. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements indicated that the polymer film prepared in the CLC formed in the manner of LC molecular arrangement through molecular form imprinting from the LC order, although the polymer exhibited no liquid crystallinity. The polymer showed structural color and laser light oscillation diffraction derived from its periodic structure. The anisotropy of the circularly polarized electron spin resonance signals for the resulting polymer with respect to the magnetic field was observed.

Effect of Cr/Mn Addition in TiVNb on Hydrogen Sorption Properties: Thermodynamics and Phase Transition Study

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are a promising class of materials that can grant remarkable functional performances for a large range of applications due to their highly tunable composition. Among these applications, recently, bcc HEAs capable of forming fcc hydrides have been proposed as high-capacity hydrogen storage materials with improved thermodynamics compared to classical metal hydrides. In this context, a single-phase bcc (TiVNb)0.90Cr0.05Mn0.05 HEA was prepared by arc melting to evaluate the effect of combined Cr/Mn addition in the ternary TiVNb. A thermodynamic destabilization of the fcc hydride phase was found in the HEA compared to the initial TiVNb. In situ neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments put forward a fcc → bcc phase transition of the metallic subnetwork in the temperature range of 260–350 °C, whereas the H/D subnetwork underwent an order → disorder transition at 180 °C. The absorption/desorption cycling demonstrated very fast absorption kinetics at room temperature in less than 1 min with a remarkable total capacity (2.8 wt.%) without phase segregation. Therefore, the design strategy consisting of small additions of non-hydride-forming elements into refractory HEAs allows for materials with promising properties for solid-state hydrogen storage to be obtained.

Multiscale Length Structural Investigation and Thermoelectric Performance of Double-Filled Sr0.2Yb0.2Co4Sb12: An Exceptional Thermal Conductivity Reduction by Filler Segregation to the Grain Boundaries.

Among thermoelectric materials, skutterudites are the most prominent candidates in the mid-temperature range applications. In the multiple-filled Sr0.2Yb0.2Co4Sb12 skutterudite, with Sr and Yb as fillers, we have enhanced the thermoelectric performance of CoSb3 through the reduction of lattice thermal conductivity and the optimization of carrier concentration and electrical conductivity. The high-pressure synthesis of the double-filled derivative promotes filling fraction fluctuation. This is observed by high angular resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, showing a phase segregation that corresponds to an inhomogeneous distribution of the filler atoms, located at the 2a positions of the cubic space group Im3̅. In addition, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with EELS spectroscopy clearly shows a segregation of Sr atoms from the surface of the grains, which is compatible with the synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction results. Mean square displacement parameters analysis results in Einstein temperatures of ∼94 and ∼67 K for Sr and Yb, respectively, and a Debye temperature of ∼250 K. The strong effect on resonant and disorder scattering yields a significantly lower lattice thermal conductivity of 2.5 W m-1 K-1 at 773 K. Still, good weighed-mobility values were obtained, with high filling fraction of the Yb and Sr elements. This drives a reduced electrical resistivity of 2.1 × 10-5 Ω m, which leads to a peak zT of 0.26 at 773 K. The analysis and results performed for the synthesized (Sr,Yb)-double filled CoSb3, shed light on skutterudites for potential waste-heat recovery applications.

Pressure-induced Lifshitz transition in the type-II Weyl semimetal WP2

We report evidences of a pressure-induced Lifshitz transition in the type-II Weyl semimetal WP2 via resistance, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and Raman scattering measurements with the aid of density functional theory calculations up to 50 GPa. The resistance at 2 K and 300 K and residual resistance ratio rise precipitously at ca. 20 GPa. The pristine orthorhombic structure is robust against pressures up to 50 GPa. There occurs a discontinuity in the unit cell volume, lattice parameter, lattice parameter ratio and axial compressibility at ～20 GPa. Two Raman-active modes soften abruptly accompanied with appearance of a new Raman-active mode at ～15 GPa. Density functional theory calculations identify drastic changes in the Fermi surface topology at～30 GPa. Our findings stimulate further pursuit of pressure-induced superconductivity via a Lifshitz transition in WP2.

In situ synchrotron investigation of tensile deformation and failure mechanisms in cold spray Cr-coated Zr-alloy system

High energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction in the transmission mode was performed in situ during uniaxial tensile testing to understand the deformation and cracking behavior of cold spray Cr-coated Zr-alloy specimens in both the as-deposited and annealed conditions. The fracture surface of the specimens, examined using scanning electron microscopy, revealed that the Cr coatings in both samples remained strongly adherent to the substrates through the completion of the tensile test. Both elastic and plastic deformation mechanisms during tensile deformation were quantified using detailed X-ray line profile analysis. High dislocation density with a unique distribution of edge and screw fractions and non-zero lattice strain was determined to be present in the cold spray Cr coating due to high strain-rate deformation during cold spray deposition. The annealing treatment reduced both residual lattice strain and dislocation density (with preferentially higher reduction in edge fractions) in the Cr coating. This led to a heterogeneous distribution of dislocation density and character among different grains, that enhanced resistance to crack propagation in the annealed Cr coating. The mechanical properties of the Zr-alloy in both specimens were not significantly altered by the presence of the cold sprayed Cr coating on the surface.
