The TeV emission of Ap Librae: a hadronic interpretation and prospects for CTA

Ap Librae is one out of a handful of low-frequency peaked blazars to be detected at TeV $\gamma$-rays and the only one with an identified X-ray jet. Combined observations of Fermi-LAT at high energies (HE) and of H.E.S.S at very high energies (VHE) revealed a striking spectral property of Ap Librae; the presence of a broad high-energy component that extends more than nine orders of magnitude in energy and is, therefore, hard to be explained by the usual single-zone synchrotron self-Compton model. We show that the superposition of different emission components related to photohadronic interactions can explain the $\gamma$-ray emission of Ap Librae without invoking external radiation fields. We present two indicative model fits to the spectral energy distribution of Ap Librae where the VHE emission is assumed to originate from a compact, sub-pc scale region of the jet. A robust prediction of our model is VHE flux variability on timescales similar to those observed at X-rays and HE $\gamma$-rays, which can be further used to distinguish between a sub-pc or kpc scale origin of the TeV emission. We thus calculate the expected variability signatures at X-rays, HE and VHE $\gamma$-rays and show that quasi-simultaneous flares are expected, with larger amplitude flares appearing at $\gamma$-rays. We assess the detectability of VHE variability from Ap Librae with CTA, next generation of IACTs. We show that $\sim$hr timescale variability at $E_{\gamma}>0.1$ TeV could be detectable at high significance with shorter exposure times than current Cherenkov telescopes.

A NUMERICAL MODEL OF PARSEC-SCALE SSC MORPHOLOGIES AND THEIR RADIO EMISSION

ABSTRACT In current models for jets of active galactic nuclei and their emission a shortcoming in the description and understanding of the connection between the largest and smallest scales exists. In this work we present a spatially resolved synchrotron self-Compton model extended to parsec scales, which opens the possibility of probing the connections between the radio and high-energy properties. We simulate an environment that leads to Fermi-I acceleration of leptonic particles and includes the full time dependence of this process. Omitting the restriction of a finite downstream region, we find that the spectral energy distribution produced by the accelerated particles strongly depends on their radial confinement behind the shock. The requirement, for both the restriction of high-energy emission to a small region around the shock and the production of a flat radio spectrum, is an initial linear increase of the radius immediately behind the shock, which then slows down with increasing distance from the shock. A good representation of the data for the blazar Mrk 501 is achieved by a parameterized log function. The prediction for the shape of the radio blob is given by the flux distribution with respect to shock distance.

Testing one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton models with spectral energy distributions of Mrk 421

We test one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) models with high-quality multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) data of Mrk 421. We use Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique to fit twelve day-scale SEDs of Mrk 421 with one-zone SSC models. Three types of electron energy distribution (EED), a log-parabola (LP) EED, a power-law log-parabola (PLLP) EED and a broken power-law (BPL) EED, are assumed in fits. We find that the one-zone SSC model with the PLLP EED provides successful fits to all the twelve SEDs. However, the one-zone SSC model with the LP and BPL EEDs fail to provide acceptable fits to the highest energy X-ray data or GeV data in several states. We therefore conclude that the one-zone SSC model works well in explaining the SEDs of Mrk 421, and the PLLP EED is preferred over the LP and BPL EEDs for Mrk 421 during the flare in March 2010. We derive magnetic field $B'\sim0.01$\ G, Doppler factor $\delta_{\rm D}\sim$30--50, and the curvature parameter of EED $r\sim1$--$10$ in the model with the PLLP EED. The evolutions of model parameters are explored. The physical implications of our results are discussed.

The physical properties ofFermiTeV BL Lac objects’ jets

We investigate the physical properties of \textit{Fermi} TeV BL Lac objects jets by modeling the quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distribution of 29 \textit{Fermi} TeV BL Lacs in the frame of a one-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton model. Our main results are the following: (i) There is a negative correlation between $B$ and $\delta$ in our sample, which suggests that $B$ and $\delta$ are dependent on each other mainly in Thomson regime. (ii) There are negative correlations between $\nu_{\text{sy}}$ and $r$, the $\nu_{\text{IC}}$ and $r$, which is a signature of the energy-dependence statistical acceleration or the stochastic acceleration. There is a significant correlation between $r$ and $s$, which suggests that the curvature of the electron energy distribution is attributed to the energy-dependence statistical acceleration mechanism. (iii) By assuming one proton per relativistic electron, we estimate the jet power and radiative power. A size relation $P_{\text{e}} \sim P_{\text{p}} > P_{\text{r}} \gtrsim P_{\text{B}}$ is found in our sample. The $P_{\text{e}}>P_{\text{B}}$ suggests that the jets are particle dominated, and the $P_{\text{e}}\sim P_{\text{p}}$ means that the mean energy of relativistic electrons approaches $m_{\text{p}}/m_{\text{e}}$. There are not significant correlations between $P_{\text{jet}}$ and black hole mass in high or low state with a sub-sample of 18 sources, which suggests that the jet power weakly depends on the black hole mass. (iv) There is a correlation between the changes in the flux density at 1 TeV and the changes in the $\gamma_{\text{peak}}$, which suggests the change/evolution of electron energy distribution may be mainly responsible for the flux variation.

BARYON LOADING EFFICIENCY AND PARTICLE ACCELERATION EFFICIENCY OF RELATIVISTIC JETS: CASES FOR LOW LUMINOSITY BL LACS

ABSTRACT Relativistic jets launched by supermassive black holes, so-called active galactic nuclei (AGNs), are known as the most energetic particle accelerators in the universe. However, the baryon loading efficiency onto the jets from the accretion flows and their particle acceleration efficiencies have been veiled in mystery. With the latest data sets, we perform multi-wavelength spectral analysis of quiescent spectra of 13 TeV gamma-ray detected high-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs) following one-zone static synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. We determine the minimum, cooling break, and maximum electron Lorentz factors following the diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) theory. We find that HBLs have and the radiative efficiency , where P B and P e is the Poynting and electron power, respectively. By assuming 10 leptons per one proton, the jet power relates to the black hole mass as , where and is the jet power and the Eddington luminosity, respectively. Under our model assumptions, we further find that HBLs have a jet production efficiency of and a mass loading efficiency of . We also investigate the particle acceleration efficiency in the blazar zone by including the most recent Swift/BAT data. Our samples ubiquitously have particle acceleration efficiencies of , which is inefficient to accelerate particles up to the ultra-high-energy-cosmic-ray (UHECR) regime. This implies that the UHECR acceleration sites should not be the blazar zones of quiescent low power AGN jets, if one assumes the one-zone SSC model based on the DSA theory.

Multiband Variability Analysis of Mrk 421

We have assembled the historical variability data of Mrk 421 at radio 15 GHz, X-ray, and γ-ray bands, spanning about 6.3, 10.3, and 7.5 yr, respectively. We analyzed the variability by using three methods. The results indicated that there is a period of 287.6 ± 4.4 days for 15 GHz, 309.5 ± 5.8 days for X-ray and 283.4 ± 4.7 days for γ-ray, respectively. This period can be reasonably explained by the nonballistic helical motion of the emitting material. The correlation analysis suggested that the variabilities of radio 15 GHz, X-ray, and γ-ray are remarkably correlated, and the emission of radio 15 GHz lags behind that of X-ray, and the X-ray flux lags behind the γ-ray. This suggests that the γ-ray is derived from inverse-Compton (IC) scattering of the synchrotron photons, supporting the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. Moreover, the time delay between different wavebands could be explained by the shock-in-jet models, in which a moving emission region produces the radio to γ-ray activity, implying that the emission region of γ-ray is closer to the center than ones of X-ray and radio emission.

Using infrared/X-ray flare statistics to probe the emission regions near the event horizon of Sgr A*

The supermassive black hole at the centre of the Galaxy flares at least daily in the infrared (IR) and X-ray bands, yet the process driving these flares is still unknown. So far detailed analysis has only been performed on a few bright flares. In particular, the broadband spectral modelling suffers from a strong lack of simultaneous data. However, new monitoring campaigns now provide data on thousands of flaring events, allowing a statistical analysis of the flare properties. In this paper, we investigate the X-ray and IR flux distributions of the flare events. Using a self-consistent calculation of the particle distribution, we model the statistical properties of the flares. Based on a previous work on single flares, we consider two families of models: pure synchrotron models and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) models. We investigate the effect of fluctuations in some relevant parameters (e.g. acceleration properties, density, magnetic field) on the flux distributions. The distribution of these parameters is readily derived from the flux distributions observed at different wavelengths. In both scenarios, we find that fluctuations of the power injected in accelerated particles plays a major role. This must be distributed as a power-law (with different indices in each model). In the synchrotron dominated scenario, we derive the most extreme values of the acceleration power required to reproduce the brightest flares. In that model, the distribution of the acceleration slope fluctuations is constrained and in the SSC scenario we constrain the distributions of the correlated magnetic field and flow density variations.

Discovery of very high energy gamma rays from 1ES 1440+122

The BL Lacertae object 1ES 1440+122 was observed in the energy range from 85 GeV to 30 TeV by the VERITAS array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The observations, taken between 2008 May and 2010 June and totalling 53 hours, resulted in the discovery of $\gamma$-ray emission from the blazar, which has a redshift $z$=0.163. 1ES 1440+122 is detected at a statistical significance of 5.5 standard deviations above the background with an integral flux of (2.8$\pm0.7_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.8_{\mathrm{sys}}$) $\times$ 10$^{-12}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (1.2\% of the Crab Nebula's flux) above 200 GeV. The measured spectrum is described well by a power law from 0.2 TeV to 1.3 TeV with a photon index of 3.1 $\pm$ 0.4$_{\mathrm{stat}}$ $\pm$ 0.2$_{\mathrm{sys}}$. Quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (0.3--300 GeV) and the Swift X-ray Telescope (0.2--10 keV) are additionally used to model the properties of the emission region. A synchrotron self-Compton model produces a good representation of the multi-wavelength data. Adding an external-Compton or a hadronic component also adequately describes the data.

On the origin of the soft photons of the high-synchrotron-peaked blazar PKS 1424+240

PKS 1424+240 is a distant very high energy gamma-ray BL Lac object with redshift $z=0.601$. It was found that pure synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process normally need extreme input parameters (e.g., very low magnetic field intensity and extraordinarily large Doppler factor) to explain its multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs). To avoid the extreme model parameters, different models have been proposed (e.g., two-zone SSC model or lepto-hadronic model). In this work, we employ the traditional one-zone leptonic model after including a weak external Compton component to re-explore the simultaneous multi-wavelength SEDs of PKS 1424+240 in both high (2009) and low (2013) states. We find that the input parameters of magnetic field and Doppler factor are roughly consistent with those of other BL Lacs if a weak external photon field from either broad line region (BLR) or the dust torus. However, the required energy density of seed photons from BLR or torus is about 3 orders of magnitude less than that constrained in luminous quasars (e.g., flat-spectrum radio quasars, FSRQs). This result suggests that the BLR/torus in BL Lacs is much weaker than that of luminous FSRQs (but not fully disappear), and the inverse-Compton of external photons from BLR/torus may still play a role even in high synchrotron peaked blazars.

Investigating the peculiar emission from the new VHE gamma-ray source H1722+119

The MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes observed the BL Lac object H1722+119 (redshift unknown) for six consecutive nights between 2013 May 17 and 22, for a total of 12.5 h. The observations were triggered by high activity in the optical band measured by the KVA (Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien) telescope. The source was for the first time detected in the very high energy (VHE, $E > 100$ GeV) $\gamma$-ray band with a statistical significance of 5.9 $\sigma$. The integral flux above 150 GeV is estimated to be $(2.0\pm 0.5)$ per cent of the Crab Nebula flux. We used contemporaneous high energy (HE, 100 MeV $ < E < 100$ GeV) $\gamma$-ray observations from Fermi-LAT (Large Area Telescope) to estimate the redshift of the source. Within the framework of the current extragalactic background light models, we estimate the redshift to be $z = 0.34 \pm 0.15$. Additionally, we used contemporaneous X-ray to radio data collected by the instruments on board the Swift satellite, the KVA, and the OVRO (Owens Valley Radio Observatory) telescope to study multifrequency characteristics of the source. We found no significant temporal variability of the flux in the HE and VHE bands. The flux in the optical and radio wavebands, on the other hand, did vary with different patterns. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of H1722+119 shows surprising behaviour in the $\sim 3\times10^{14} - 10^{18}$ Hz frequency range. It can be modelled using an inhomogeneous helical jet synchrotron self-Compton model.

CONTEMPORANEOUS BROADBAND OBSERVATIONS OF THREE HIGH-REDSHIFT BL LAC OBJECTS

ABSTRACT We have collected broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of three BL Lac objects 3FGL J0022.1−1855 (z = 0.689), 3FGL J0630.9−2406 ( z &gsim; ?> 1.239), and 3FGL J0811.2−7529 (z = 0.774), detected by Fermi with relatively flat gigaelectronvolt spectra. By observing simultaneously in the near-infrared to hard X-ray band, we can well characterize the high end of the synchrotron component of the SED. Thus, fitting the SEDs to synchro-Compton models of the dominant emission from the relativistic jet, we can constrain the underlying particle properties and predict the shape of the gigaelectronvolt Compton component. Standard extragalactic background light (EBL) models explain the high-energy absorption well, with poorer fits for high-ultraviolet models. The fits show clear evidence for EBL absorption in the Fermi spectrum of our highest-redshift source 3FGL J0630.9−2406. While synchrotron self-Compton models adequately describe the SEDs, the situation may be complicated by possible external Compton components. For 3FGL J0811.2−7529, we also discover a nearby serendipitous source in the X-ray data, which is almost certainly another lower synchrotron peak frequency ( &ngr; pk sy ?> ) BL Lac, that may contribute flux in the Fermi band. Since our sources are unusual high-luminosity, moderate &ngr; pk sy ?> BL Lacs, we compare these quantities and the Compton dominance, the ratio of peak inverse Compton to peak synchrotron luminosities ( L pk IC / L pk sy ?> ), with those of the full Fermi BL Lac population.

MULTIWAVELENGTH STUDY OF QUIESCENT STATES OF Mrk 421 WITH UNPRECEDENTED HARD X-RAY COVERAGE PROVIDED BY NuSTAR IN 2013

ABSTRACT We present coordinated multiwavelength observations of the bright, nearby BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 taken in 2013 January–March, involving GASP-WEBT, Swift, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS, and other collaborations and instruments, providing data from radio to very high energy (VHE) γ-ray bands. NuSTAR yielded previously unattainable sensitivity in the 3–79 keV range, revealing that the spectrum softens when the source is dimmer until the X-ray spectral shape saturates into a steep &Gamma; &approx; 3 ?> power law, with no evidence for an exponential cutoff or additional hard components up to ∼80 keV. For the first time, we observed both the synchrotron and the inverse-Compton peaks of the spectral energy distribution (SED) simultaneously shifted to frequencies below the typical quiescent state by an order of magnitude. The fractional variability as a function of photon energy shows a double-bump structure that relates to the two bumps of the broadband SED. In each bump, the variability increases with energy, which, in the framework of the synchrotron self-Compton model, implies that the electrons with higher energies are more variable. The measured multi band variability, the significant X-ray-to-VHE correlation down to some of the lowest fluxes ever observed in both bands, the lack of correlation between optical/UV and X-ray flux, the low degree of polarization and its significant (random) variations, the short estimated electron cooling time, and the significantly longer variability timescale observed in the NuSTAR light curves point toward in situ electron acceleration and suggest that there are multiple compact regions contributing to the broadband emission of Mrk 421 during low-activity states.

A soft X-ray lag detected in Centaurus A

Abstract We performed time-lag analysis on the X-ray light curves of Centaurus A (Cen A) obtained by the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) aboard the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) in three energy bands (2–4 keV, 4–10 keV, and 10–20 keV). We discovered a soft X-ray lag relative to higher energies (soft lag) on a timescale of days in a flaring episode by employing the discrete correlation function (DCF) and the z-transformed discrete correlation function (ZDCF) method. In the episode, a peak and a centroid in the DCF and the ZDCF was observed at a soft lag of ∼ 5 d in 2–4 keV versus 4–10 keV and in 4–10 keV versus 10–20 keV, and ∼ 10 d in 2–4 keV versus 10–20 keV. We found it difficult to explain the observed X-ray variation by a single energy injection with the one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model, in which the soft lags in these three energy bands reflect the different cooling times of the relativistic electrons, by assuming the magnetic field and minimum Lorentz factor estimated from a broad-band spectral energy distribution. Alternatively, if the phenomenon is interpreted as cooling of Comptonizing electrons in a corona covering the accretion disk, the temperature of the corona producing the variable X-rays should be ∼ 10 keV for reconciliation with the soft lag in the energy range of 2–20 keV.

4.5 YEARS OF MULTI-WAVELENGTH OBSERVATIONS OF MRK 421 DURING THE ARGO-YBJ AND FERMI COMMON OPERATION TIME

ABSTRACT We report on the extensive multi-wavelength observations of the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) covering radio to γ-rays, during the 4.5 year period of ARGO-YBJ and Fermi common operation time, from 2008 August to 2013 February. These long-term observations, extending over an energy range of 18 orders of magnitude, provide a unique chance to study the variable emission of Mrk 421. In particular, due to the ARGO-YBJ and Fermi data, the entire energy range from 100 MeV to 10 TeV is covered without any gap. In the observation period, Mrk 421 showed both low- and high-activity states at all wavebands. The correlations among flux variations in different wavebands were analyzed. The X-ray flux is clearly correlated with the TeV γ-ray flux, while the GeV γ-rays only show a partial correlation with the TeV γ-rays. Radio and UV fluxes seem to be weakly or not correlated with the X-ray and γ-ray fluxes. Seven large flares, including five X-ray flares and two GeV γ-ray flares with variable durations (3–58 days), and one X-ray outburst phase were identified and used to investigate the variation of the spectral energy distribution with respect to a relative quiescent phase. During the outburst phase and the seven flaring episodes, the peak energy in X-rays is observed to increase from sub-keV to a few keV. The TeV γ-ray flux increases up to 0.9–7.2 times the flux of the Crab Nebula. The behavior of GeV γ-rays is found to vary depending on the flare, a feature that leads us to classify flares into three groups according to the GeV flux variation. Finally, the one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model was adopted to describe the emission spectra. Two out of three groups can be satisfactorily described using injected electrons with a power-law spectral index around 2.2, as expected from relativistic diffuse shock acceleration, whereas the remaining group requires a harder injected spectrum. The underlying physical mechanisms responsible for different groups may be related to the acceleration process or to the environment properties.

FIRSTNuSTAROBSERVATIONS OF MRK 501 WITHIN A RADIO TO TeV MULTI-INSTRUMENT CAMPAIGN

We report on simultaneous broadband observations of the TeV-emitting blazar Markarian 501 between 1 April and 10 August 2013, including the first detailed characterization of the synchrotron peak with Swift and NuSTAR. During the campaign, the nearby BL Lac object was observed in both a quiescent and an elevated state. The broadband campaign includes observations with NuSTAR, MAGIC, VERITAS, the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), Swift X-ray Telescope and UV Optical Telescope, various ground-based optical instruments, including the GASP-WEBT program, as well as radio observations by OVRO, Mets\"ahovi and the F-Gamma consortium. Some of the MAGIC observations were affected by a sand layer from the Saharan desert, and had to be corrected using event-by-event corrections derived with a LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) facility. This is the first time that LIDAR information is used to produce a physics result with Cherenkov Telescope data taken during adverse atmospheric conditions, and hence sets a precedent for the current and future ground-based gamma-ray instruments. The NuSTAR instrument provides unprecedented sensitivity in hard X-rays, showing the source to display a spectral energy distribution between 3 and 79 keV consistent with a log-parabolic spectrum and hard X-ray variability on hour timescales. None (of the four extended NuSTAR observations) shows evidence of the onset of inverse-Compton emission at hard X-ray energies. We apply a single-zone equilibrium synchrotron self-Compton model to five simultaneous broadband spectral energy distributions. We find that the synchrotron self-Compton model can reproduce the observed broadband states through a decrease in the magnetic field strength coinciding with an increase in the luminosity and hardness of the relativistic leptons responsible for the high-energy emission.

An emerging population of BL Lacs with extreme properties: towards a class of EBL and cosmic magnetic field probes?

High energy observations of extreme BL Lac objects, such as 1ES 0229+200 or 1ES 0347-121, recently focused interest both for blazar and jet physics and for the implication on the extragalactic background light and intergalactic magnetic field estimate. However, the number of these extreme highly peaked BL Lac objects (EHBL) is still rather small. Aiming at increase their number, we selected a group of EHBL candidates starting from the BL Lac sample of Plotkin et al. (2011), considering those undetected (or only barely detected) by the Large Area Telescope onboard Fermi and characterized by a high X-ray vs. radio flux ratio. We assembled the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution of the resulting 9 sources, profiting of publicly available archival observations performed by the Swift, Galex and Fermi satellites, confirming their nature. Through a simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model we estimate the expected VHE flux, finding that in the majority of cases it is within the reach of present generation of Cherenkov arrays or of the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA).

Unprecedented study of the broadband emission of Mrk 421 during flaring activity in March 2010

A flare from the TeV blazar Mrk 421, occurring in March 2010, was observed for 13 consecutive days from radio to very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-rays with MAGIC, VERITAS, Whipple, FermiLAT, MAXI, RXTE, Swift, GASP-WEBT, and several optical and radio telescopes. We model the day-scale SEDs with one-zone and two-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) models, investigate the physical parameters, and evaluate whether the observed broadband SED variability can be associated to variations in the relativistic particle population. Flux variability was remarkable in the X-ray and VHE bands while it was minor or not significant in the other bands. The one-zone SSC model can describe reasonably well the SED of each day for the 13 consecutive days. This flaring activity is also very well described by a two-zone SSC model, where one zone is responsible for the quiescent emission while the other smaller zone, which is spatially separated from the first one, contributes to the daily-variable emission occurring in X-rays and VHE gamma-rays. Both the one-zone SSC and the two-zone SSC models can describe the daily SEDs via the variation of only four or five model parameters, under the hypothesis that the variability is associated mostly to the underlying particle population. This shows that the particle acceleration and cooling mechanism producing the radiating particles could be the main one responsible for the broadband SED variations during the flaring episodes in blazars. The two-zone SSC model provides a better agreement to the observed SED at the narrow peaks of the low- and high-energy bumps during the highest activity, although the reported one-zone SSC model could be further improved by the variation of the parameters related to the emitting region itself ($\delta$, $B$ and $R$), in addition to the parameters related to the particle population.

Probing the very high energy γ-ray spectral curvature in the blazar PG 1553+113 with the MAGIC telescopes

PG 1553+113 is a very-high-energy (VHE, $E>100\,\mathrm{GeV}$) $\gamma$-ray emitter classified as a BL Lac object. Its redshift is constrained by intergalactic absorption lines in the range $0.4<z<0.58$. The MAGIC telescopes have monitored the source's activity since 2005. In early 2012, PG 1553+113 was found in a high-state, and later, in April of the same year, the source reached its highest VHE flux state detected so far. Simultaneous observations carried out in X-rays during 2012 April show similar flaring behaviour. In contrast, the $\gamma$-ray flux at $E<100\,\mathrm{GeV}$ observed by Fermi-LAT is compatible with steady emission. In this paper, a detailed study of the flaring state is presented. The VHE spectrum shows clear curvature, being well fitted either by a power law with an exponential cut-off or by a log-parabola. A simple power-law fit hypothesis for the observed shape of the PG 1553+113 VHE $\gamma$-ray spectrum is rejected with a high significance (fit probability P=2.6 $\times 10^{-6}$). The observed curvature is compatible with the extragalactic background light (EBL) imprint predicted by current generation EBL models assuming a redshift $z\sim0.4$. New constraints on the redshift are derived from the VHE spectrum. These constraints are compatible with previous limits and suggest that the source is most likely located around the optical lower limit, $z=0.4$, based on the detection of Ly$\alpha$ absorption. Finally, we find that the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model gives a satisfactory description of the observed multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution during the flare.

High-energy emission processes in M87

We study the contribution of thermal and non-thermal processes to the inverse Compton emission of the radio galaxy M 87 by modelling its broad-band emission. Through this we aim to derive insight into where within the AGN the X-ray, gamma-ray, and VHE emission is produced. We have analysed all available INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI data on M 87, spanning almost 10 years, to set an upper limit to the average hard X-ray flux of $f(20 - 60 \rm \, keV) < 3\times 10^{-12}$ $\rm \, erg \, cm^{-2} \, s^{-1}$, using several techniques beyond the standard analysis which are also presented here. We also analysed hard X-ray data from Suzaku/PIN taken late November 2006, and we report the first hard X-ray detection of M 87 with a flux of $f(20 - 60 \rm \, keV) = 10^{-11}\rm \, erg \, cm^{-2} \, s^{-1} $. In addition we analyse data from Fermi/LAT, INTEGRAL/JEM-X, and Suzaku/XIS. We collected historical radio/IR/optical and VHE data and combined them with the X-ray and gamma-ray data, to create broad-band spectral energy distributions for the average low-flux state and the flaring state. The resulting spectral energy distributions are modelled by applying a single-zone SSC model with a jet angle of theta = 15 degrees. We also show that modelling the core emission of M 87 using a single-zone synchrotron self-Compton model does represent the SED, suggesting that the core emission is dominated by a BL Lac type AGN core. Using SED modelling we also show that the hard X-ray emission detected in 2006 is likely due to a flare of the jet knot HST-1, rather than being related to the core.

An emergence of a new polarized emission region in blazar Mrk 421 associated with an X-ray flare

Abstract We report on long-term multi-wavelength monitoring of blazar Mrk 421 from 2010 to 2011. The source exhibited extreme X-ray flares in 2010. Our research group performed optical photopolarimetric follow-up observations using the Kanata telescope. In 2010, the variability in the X-ray band was significant, while the optical and ultraviolet (UV) flux decreased gradually. Polarization properties also exhibited unique variability in 2010, suggesting the presence of a systematic component of polarization and magnetic field alignment for the emergence of a new polarized emission region. In contrast, in 2011 the variability in the X-ray band was smaller, and the variability in the optical and UV bands was larger, than in 2010. To explore the reasons for these differences, spectral fitting analysis was performed via simple synchrotron self-Compton modeling; the results revealed different behaviors in terms of spectral evolution between these periods, suggesting different variability mechanisms between 2010 and 2011. In 2010, the radiation was likely the result of energy injection into the emitting regions with an aligned magnetic field. In contrast, in 2011 the superposition of different emission regions may have contributed to the low degree of observed polarization. It also implies that high-energy electrons which were not accelerated to ultra-relativistic velocities were injected in 2011.
