Regulation of root-associated microbiomes and root exudates by different tobacco species

BackgroundThe root-associated microbiomes are crucial in promoting plant growth and development through symbiotic interactions with their hosts. Plants may shape their microbiomes by secreting specific root exudates. However, the potential mechanisms how plant species determine root exudates and drive microbiome assembly have been little studied. In this study, three wild tobaccos and one cultivated tobacco were used to investigate the commonalities and differences of both root-associated microbiomes and root exudates.ResultsAmplicon sequencing results suggested that tobacco species significantly affected microbial communities in both the rhizosphere and root endosphere, with the strongest impact on the fungal community in the root endosphere. The microbial networks of wild tobacco species were more stable than that of the cultivated tobacco, and fungal members played a more important role in the networks of wild tobacco species, while bacterial members did so in the cultivated tobacco. The rhizosphere bacteria of wild tobacco species showed a higher functional diversity than that of the cultivated tobacco, while the bacteria in the root endosphere presented a contrary pattern. Metabolomics analysis showed significant differences in the composition and abundance of root exudates among the four tobacco species, and the greatest difference was found between the three wild species and the cultivated one. Correlation analysis showed the strongest correlation between metabolites and rhizosphere bacteria, in which O-benzoic acid (2-methoxybenzoic acid) had the most positive correlations with rhizosphere bacteria, while β-ureidoisobutenoic acid had the most negative correlations with rhizosphere bacteria. The rhizosphere bacteria Streptomyces, Hydrophilus and Roseobacter had the strongest positive correlations with metabolites, and the rhizosphere bacterium Nitrobacter had the most negative correlations with metabolites.ConclusionThis study revealed the differences of microbial communities and root exudates in the rhizosphere and root endosphere of four tobacco species, which can further improve our understanding of plant–microbiome interactions during crop domestication.Graphical

Novel Framework for Exploring Human–Water Symbiosis Relationship: Analysis, Quantification, Discrimination, and Attribution

There is an interdependent symbiotic relationship between humans and water; scientific and effective assessment of the human–water symbiosis relationship is of great significance for the promotion of sustainable development. This study developed a novel framework of the human–water symbiosis relationship under an integrated perspective, which included theoretical interpretation, quantitative assessment, pattern discrimination, and an attribution analysis. Based on the symbiosis theory, the theoretical analysis of the human–water relationship was carried out to analyze the three basic elements of the human–water system, and then the evaluation index system of the human–water symbiosis system was constructed to quantitatively assess the development level of the human system and the water system. The Lotka–Volterra model was used to identify the symbiotic pattern, and the human–water symbiosis index was calculated to characterize the health state of the human–water symbiosis system. The main influencing factors of the human–water symbiosis system were further identified through an attribution analysis. Finally, a case study was carried out with 18 cities in Henan Province. Results reveal that (a) the proposed method can effectively realize the quantitative characterization of the human–water symbiosis relationship, with good applicability and obvious advantages; (b) the human–water symbiosis pattern of cities in Henan Province is dominated by the “human system parasitizes water system (H+W−)” pattern, and more attention should be paid to the water system in the subsequent development of it; and (c) the main factors influencing the human system, the water system, and the human–water symbiosis system are the research and development (R&D) personnel equivalent full-time (H7), per capita water resources (W1), and proportion of water conservancy and ecological water conservancy construction investment (W6), respectively. The findings can provide theoretical and methodological support for the study of the human–water symbiosis relationship and sustainable development in other regions.

Closed-loop recyclable wood-plastic composite as a sustainable alternative to wood: A solution for utilizing wood waste and promoting carbon sequestration

Utilizing wood waste to construct high-performance materials and partially replace natural wood applications is a feasible solution to address the overconsumption of forest resources and enhance carbon sequestration. A closed-loop recyclable wood-plastic composite (WPC) with high wood waste flour (WF) content (70 wt%) was developed using poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) as the polymer component. The two components in WF/PPDO WPC form an interesting symbiotic relationship owing to their strong interactions. PPDO serves as “binder” for WF and integrates them as a whole, whilst WF protects PPDO from hydrolysis, therefore substantially prolonging service life. The comprehensive performance of the WF/PPDO WPC (such as WF content, mechanical properties, hardness, and water absorption) is comparable or better than natural wood or commercial WPC. Moreover, WF/PPDO can be closed-loop recycled almost 100 % to its initial raw materials. The relatively low carbon footprint of WF/PPDO (1.06 kg CO2e/kg of materials) was confirmed by life-cycle assessment (LCA). In addition, the facile preparation of WF/PPDO is scalable and widely applicable to other cellulose-containing waste.

Insight into the responses of the anammox granular sludge system to tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) during chip wastewater treatment

Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), an extensively utilized photoresist developer, is frequently present in ammonium-rich wastewater from semiconductor manufacturing, and its substantial ecotoxicity should not be underestimated. This study systematically investigated the effects of TMAH on the anammox granular sludge (AnGS) system and elucidated its inhibitory mechanisms. The results demonstrated that the median inhibitory concentration of TMAH for anammox was 84.85 mg/L. The nitrogen removal performance of the system was significantly decreased after long-term exposure to TMAH (0–200 mg/L) for 30 days (p < 0.05), but it showed adaptability to certain concentrations (≤50 mg/L). Concurrently, the stability of the granules decreased dramatically, resulting in the breakdown of AnGS. Further investigations indicated that TMAH exposure increased the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances but weakened their defense function. The increase in reactive oxygen species resulted in damage to the cell membrane. Reduced activity of anammox bacteria, impeded electron transfer, and changes in enzyme activity suggested that TMAH affected the metabolic activity. Microbiological analysis revealed that TMAH caused a decrease in the abundance of anammox bacteria and a weakening of symbiotic interactions within the microbial community. These results provide valuable guidance for the AnGS system application in chip wastewater treatment.

Enhanced Growth and Productivity of Arthrospira platensis H53 in a Nature-like Alkalophilic Environment and Its Implementation in Sustainable Arthrospira Cultivation

Synthetic culture media, such as Zarrouk’s medium (ZM), are widely used in industrial Arthrospira cultivation but rely heavily on chemical fertilizers, raising concerns over cost and environmental impact. In natural habitats where Arthrospira blooms, the macronutrient concentrations are much lower than those provided by synthetic media. We hypothesized that natural growth may be facilitated by a microbial consortium. To test this, we developed a lab-scale Arthrospira platensis H53 cultivation system using a newly developed organic compost medium (OCM), designed to mimic the natural nutrient composition and microbial interactions. Compared to ZM, A. platensis H53 grown in OCM exhibited elevated growth by day 7. The specific growth rate in OCM was 0.20 day−1, higher than that of 0.17 day−1 in ZM, with optical density values reaching 1.57, compared to 1.13 in ZM. A 1.63-fold increase in biomass was observed in OCM, despite lower initial macronutrient concentrations. Nutrient use efficiency (NUE) in OCM was significantly improved, with nitrate (NO3−) and phosphate (PO43−) utilization up to 5.8-fold higher. Additionally, A. platensis H53 filaments in OCM were more tightly coiled, indicating a physiological change in response to lowered macronutrient concentrations. Microbial composition analysis using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed the presence of growth-promoting bacteria, including Pontibacter spp., Brevundimonas spp., and Aliihoeflea spp., likely contributing to nutrient cycling and enhanced growth. These findings suggest potential symbiotic interactions between cyanobacteria and non-cyanobacteria in the OCM system, promoting increased growth and productivity. This study is the first to propose such symbiosis in an extremely alkalophilic environment, offering another sustainable alternative to traditional chemical-based Arthrospira cultivation methods.

Governing the paradox of success in a hybrid supporter-owned professional football club

ABSTRACT Research question Using insights from success paradoxes and hybrid institutional logics, we analyse the institutional work undertaken to construct a novel governance structure in a supporter owned professional football club. Research methods A single exploratory case study design was adopted, focusing on the transition from existential crisis to supporter ownership. A mixed method strategy involved collecting participative observation, primary interview and secondary documentary data. Results and findings We observed a shared understanding of the overlapping priorities for the Club and (supporter) Foundation that formed the basis for collaboration. Ambiguity as to what constituted success, and awareness of latent paradoxes contributed to the institutional work necessary to develop a resilient governance structure. A distinctive aspect arose from harnessing the productive friction between the corporate and professional logics of the Club, and the community and family logics of the Foundation. Implications Institutional work undertaken in creating a new governance structure shows the potential within clubs for cooperation between different actors, demonstrating the mediating influence arising from mutual dependency between actors. When there is a high level of co-dependencies between the club and stakeholders, and contestation over what constitutes success, tensions between logics can be leveraged to benefit the hybrid organisation. While any governance solution needs to reflect a club’s specific context, the adopted governance structure should integrate resilience, mutual dependencies, business acumen, inclusion, emotion, engagement and accountability.

Systematic Review of Traditional Plant Motifs for National Identity Based on Digital Technology Landscape Platform

The incorporation of Malaysian character into landscape design via traditional landscape characteristics reflecting the region's identity has been inhibited by designers' lack of initiative in incorporating natural resources. This article investigates the plant traits that create a symbiotic relationship between native plants, notably flowers, and the feeling of place they inspire. Furthermore, the study emphasizes (a) the importance of traditional plant motifs in shaping national identity and landscape awareness, (b) their use in landscape design to create a profound sense of place, and (c) the role of traditional plant motifs in promoting sustainable landscapes, biodiversity, and environmental conservation. A thorough assessment and analysis of current studies on traditional plant motifs and their contribution to landscape identity were done to attain this goal. Scopus, Econbiz, and Mendeley indexed the reviewed literature. This research gives insights into the evolution of plant motifs for identification, especially concerning the landscape and cultural heritage, by reviewing historical methods published from 2013 till 2023. The results highlight the necessity of using traditional plant themes in landscape design to develop a strong national identity and raise environmental awareness in the digital age.

The rootstock genotype shapes the diversity of pecan (Carya illinoinensis) rhizosphere microbial community.

Pecans (Carya illinoinensis), one of the most valuable native North American nut crops, are commonly propagated through grafting to preserve the desired characteristics from parent trees. Since successful cultivation of pecan trees relies on the interplay among scion varieties, rootstocks, and soil conditions, this study investigated the microbial change to communities in the soils and roots of southern (87MX5-1.7) and northern (Peruque) rootstocks in a rootstock test orchard. Both grafted with the 'Pawnee' scion cultivar. Bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and fungal ITS were amplified from both roots and rhizosphere soils of the two 10-year-grafted trees, then sequenced and annotated into trophic and nutrient-related groups to characterize the rhizosphere microbiota. The Peruque roots had a higher relative abundance of saprotroph fungi, while 87MX5-1.7 exhibited higher levels of symbiotroph fungi and nitrogen fixation-related bacteria. Among them, the presence of symbiotroph fungi, particularly ectomycorrhizal fungi, notably differed between these two rootstocks, with a significantly higher presence observed in the root of 87MX5-1.7 compared to Peruque. This variation likely leads to divergent pathways of nutrient translocation: Peruque was in favor of multiple fungi (Russula and Inocybe) to gain nutrition, while 87MX5-1.7 preferred a specific domain of fungi (Tuber) and nitrogen fixation-related bacteria (Bradyrhizobia) to form beneficial symbiosis. Moreover, the presence of pathogens suggested a potential risk of Fusarium patch and snow molds in 87MX5-1.7, while canker and black foot disease pose threats in Peruque. The findings of this study suggest that rootstocks from different origins shape rhizosphere microbes differently, potentially affecting nutrient uptake and nut yield. Exploring rootstock-microbe combinations could provide insights into optimizing scion growth and ultimately increasing nut yield. By understanding how different rootstock-microbe interactions influence pecan tree development, growers can strategically select combinations that promote beneficial symbiotic relationships, enhancing nutrient uptake, disease resistance, and overall tree vigor.

Insights into links between redox cycling of dissolved organic matter ranked by molecular weight and methanogen-bacteria symbiosis-driven methane production

Molecular weight (MW) of dissolved organic matter (DOM) governs its redox capacity, playing pivotal roles in methanogen-bacteria symbiosis-driven CH4 production. However, the effect of redox capacity of DOM ranked by MW on these symbiotic associations during anaerobic digestion have never been investigated. The electron–donating (EDC) and –accepting capacity (EAC) of DOM with different MW were quantified, elucidating their impacts on bacteria-methanogen symbiosis-driven CH4 production. By contrast, DOM with 7000 > MW > 14,000 Da constituted the primary contribution to EAC, with an average contribution of 44.63 %. DOM with MW > 14,000 Da emerged as the predominant contributor to EDC, with an average contribution of 49.10 %. Random forest showed that EAC/EDC of DOM ranked by MW was the important factors for methanogenesis by driving shifts in microbial symbiotic relationships. 46 genera (relative abundance of 69.55 %) of microorganisms exhibited robust associations with EAC/EDC. EDC of DOM with 3500 < MW < 7000 Da exerted positive effect on CH4 by modulating the corporation of Caldicoprobacter, norank_o__TSCOR001-H18, norank_o__MBA03 and Methanobrevibacter. EDC of DOM (7000 < MW < 14,000 Da) promotes CH4 production by regulating cooperation of Corynebacterium, Pseudomonas and Methanosarcina, Methanothermus. EDC of DOM (MW > 14,000 Da) enhances CH4 production by modulating cooperation of Ureibacillus, Treponema and methanomassiliicoccus, methanogenium. EAC of DOMs were negatively correlated with CH4. This study broadens our knowledge on the intricate process of methanogenesis and holds significant importance in developing a microbial symbiosis regulation strategy based on electron transfer system.

Mechanisms of microbial diversity modulation of mineral black clay to achieve ecological restoration of open-pit mine dump

The harsh climatic conditions and severe scarcity of surface soil present significant challenges to ecological restoration in open-pit mine dumps within China's type II plant cold resistance zone. To address the topsoil shortage, mineral black clay was used to create synthetic soil. This study explored the application of an ecological restoration bacteria (ERB) consortium to accelerate the ecological restoration of synthetic soil-covered areas by enhancing soil ecosystem construction. The results demonstrated that ERB significantly influenced the native bacterial community structure in mixed black clay. Specifically, ERB disrupted the inhibitory effects of the Actinobacterota phylum on the development of native bacterial diversity, leading to an increase in unclassified_o_Solirubrobacterales sp., norank_f_norank_o_norank_c_KD4-96 sp., Sphingomonas sp., Luteitalea sp., norank_f_Vicinamibacteraceae sp., and other aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. These alterations in soil microbial structure directly impacted soil composition and vegetation diversity. The plant diversity survey and metabolomics analysis revealed that the reduction of harmful substances, such as HPED, HODE, and HOME, in black clay soil improved the growth and distribution of Salsola collina Pall. and Medicago sativa L. This increase facilitated the cycling of key nutrients, such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), and promoted the establishment of symbiotic relationships between plants, microorganisms, and soil. Ultimately, the ecological remediation of the synthetic soil was achieved through the synergistic effects of ERB, which included the degradation of inhibitory soil components, enhanced nutrient consumption by microbiota and plants, and the overall promotion of ecosystem stability in the reclamation area.

Personality in motion: How intuition and sensing personality traits relate to lower limb rebound performance.

Embodied cognition asserts a symbiotic relationship between cognitive processes and the physical body, raising an intriguing question: could personality traits be intertwined with the biomechanical performance of the lower limb? This study aimed to explore this connection by examining how personality traits, assessed using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), relate to lower limb rebound power (RP) measured through the five-repetition rebound jump test. Eighty participants completed two sessions: a biomechanical analysis of hopping using an Optojump® system to measure contact time, flight time, and RP, and a personality traits assessment categorizing traits across four MBTI axes: extraversion-introversion (favorite world); sensing-intuition (information processing preference); thinking-feeling (decision making); and judging-perceiving (structure). Participant characteristics did not significantly differ across MBTI axes (p≥0.07), minimizing potential confounding factors. Notably, individuals classified as intuitive showed significantly longer flight times (p = 0.02) and larger RP (p = 0.007) compared to sensing individuals, suggesting a greater reliance on the fast stretch-shortening cycle and showcasing superior use of their lower limb structures as springs. This suggests potential implications for sports performance, with intuition individuals possibly excelling in plyometric sports. However, no significant associations were found between biomechanical performance and the other three MBTI axes (p≥0.12), challenging the initial hypothesis. This research provides initial insights into the nuanced relationship between personality traits and movement patterns, indicating the potential for tailored physical interventions to enhance adherence and optimize responses in training programs.

“Love thy neighbor, but don’t pull down your hedge”: The influence of interdependence with major customers on supplier productivity

This research examines how mutual and relative dependence on major customers impact supplier productivity. We investigate two research questions: (1) Does the extent of mutual dependence between a supplier and its major customer base exhibit a non-linear impact on supplier productivity? (2) How does the combined influence of the supplier’s relative dependence and mutual dependence on major customers affect supplier productivity? Using major customer relationship data from Compustat segment files, we construct a longitudinal dataset in the manufacturing industry for the period 1998–2017. We estimate supplier productivity accounting for selection bias and employ the fixed effect regression approach to examine the effects of mutual dependence and relative dependence on supplier productivity. Moreover, we address potential endogeneity in the model with the control function approach. Our results indicate an inverted curvilinear relationship between a supplier’s mutual dependence on its major customers and its productivity: While increased mutual dependence initially enhances productivity, the marginal returns diminish. Interestingly, the curvilinear effect becomes more prominent when the supplier’s relative dependence increases. Our study’s findings offer three best-practice strategies including (1) spread and anchor risk, (2) reduce relative dependence, and (3) deepen customer understanding, all of which help suppliers manage the interdependence in major customer relationships.

Water deficit and aphid resilience on wheat: examining Sitobion avenae F. and their bacterial symbionts interplay under controlled laboratory conditions.

Climate change has far-reaching effects on food security and agriculture, affecting crop yields and food distribution. Agriculture relies heavily on water for irrigation and production, making it vulnerable to water scarcity. Additionally, climate change can affect crop pest insects, leading to increased global crop losses, particularly in cereals, an important component of the human diet. Aphids are major crop pests and have a symbiotic relationship with bacterial endosymbionts that can contribute to their success as pests under a climate change scenario. To test the effect of drought on aphids, we examined varying levels of water deficit and endosymbiont composition on the grain aphid (Sitobion avenae) performance on wheat under controlled laboratory conditions. We measured the intrinsic rate of population increase (rm), the body weight of adult aphids, and the pre-reproductive period for different genotypes of the grain aphid (including Chilean superclones) under different irrigation regimes. We also analyzed the relative abundance of their endosymbionts under the different water treatments. Our findings revealed that water deficit affects each aphid genotype differently, impacting various traits. For instance, the body weight of adult aphids was notably affected by different water treatments, with aphids grown under intermediate water deficit (IW) being significantly bigger. The relative abundance of endosymbionts also varied among genotypes and water treatments-specifically Regiella insecticola had a noticeably higher abundance under IW (P < 0.05). This study provides valuable insights into the impact of water deficit on aphid performance and the role of endosymbionts in mitigating the effects of water deficit. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Environmental Social Governance and Financial Performance: A Symbiotic Relationship in Indian Manufacturing

Studying Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects and firm performance is crucial for globally understanding how sustainable practices drive long-term profitability and competitiveness in diverse markets. The research gap lies in the need to empirically test the influence of ESG disclosure on corporate performance through the lens of institutional theory and signaling theory. The study aimed to examine the time-variant impact of ESG on the financial performance (FFP) of Indian manufacturing firms from 2019 to 2022. For the study’s analysis, we utilized a variant of structural equation modelling called the ‘cross-lagged panel model’. The cross-lagged panel analysis measured the association of aggregate ESG and its dimensions with FFP. Our findings suggested that the investment in the aggregate ESG commitment increased the firms’ financial performance among our sample companies. Regarding the individual aspects of ESG, the environmental and societal obligations of the firms had a positive impact on the firms’ earnings, whereas the governance aspect harms the FFP. This study provides beneficial recommendations to policymakers, investors, and portfolio managers based on the analysis.

Current perspectives and concerns in corneal neurotization.

This study aimed to comprehensively explore the intricacies of corneal neurotization (CN) and the nuanced factors that set it apart from routine clinical practice, exerting a substantial influence on its success. A symbiotic relationship is evident between corneal innervation and ocular surface health. The loss of corneal innervation results in a potentially challenging corneal condition known as neurotrophic keratopathy (NK). The majority of treatments are primarily focused on preventing epithelial breakdown rather than addressing the underlying pathogenesis. Consequently, to address the impaired corneal sensation (underlying etiology), a novel surgical approach has emerged, namely CN, which involves transferring healthy sensory nerve axons to the affected cornea. This review offers valuable insights into the existing body of supporting evidence for CN, meticulously examining clinical studies, case reports, and experimental findings. The aim is to enhance our understanding of the effectiveness and potential outcomes associated with this innovative surgical technique. The exploration of innovative therapeutic avenues holds promise for revolutionizing the management of NK, offering a potentially permanent solution to a condition once deemed incurable and severely debilitating.

Response to shock load of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on aerobic granular sludge and algal-bacterial granular sludge processes

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) are extensively used in various fields and can consequently be detected in wastewater, making it necessary to study their potential impacts on biological wastewater treatment processes. In this study, the shock-load impacts of TiO2 NPs were investigated at concentrations ranging between 1 and 200 mg L−1 on nutrient removal, extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs), microbial activity in aerobic granular sludge (AGS), and algal-bacterial granular sludge (AB-AGS) bioreactors. The results indicated that low concentration (≤10 mg L−1) TiO2 NPs had no effect on microbial activity or the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen, and phosphorus, due to the increased production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) in the sludge. In contrast, the performance of both AGS and AB-AGS bioreactors gradually deteriorated as the concentration of TiO2 NPs in the influent increased to 50, 100, and 200 mg L−1. Specifically, the ammonia‑nitrogen removal rate in AGS decreased from 99.9 % to 88.6 %, while in AB-AGS it dropped to 91.3 % at 200 mg L−1 TiO2 NPs. Furthermore, the nitrate‑nitrogen levels remained stable in AB-AGS, while NO3-N was detected in the effluent of AGS at 100 and 200 mg L−1. Microbial activities change similarly as smaller decrease in the specific ammonia uptake rate (SAUR) and specific nitrate uptake rate (SNUR) was found in AB-AGS compared to those in AGS. Overall, the algal-bacterial sludge exhibited higher resilience against TiO2 NPs, which was attributed to a) higher EPS volume, b) smaller decrease in LB-EPS, and c) the favorable protein to polysaccharide (PN/PS) ratio. This in turn, along with the symbiotic relationship between the algae and bacteria, mitigates the toxic effects of nanoparticles.

Assessing the potential role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in improving the phytochemical content and antioxidant properties in Gomphrena globosa

Strategies to increase the secondary metabolite production, obtained from medicinal plants has been the topic of research in recent years. The symbiotic interaction between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plants allows host-fungus pairings to enhance secondary metabolite synthesis. Therefore, the current study investigated the effect of inoculating two distinct AMF species discretely as well as in conjunction on the flower-derived secondary metabolites in Gomphrena globosa. The findings showed that the plants inoculated with combined treatment exhibited higher total phenolic (50.11 mg GAE/g DW), flavonoids (29.67 mg QE/g DW), saponins (122.55 mg DE/g DW), tannins (165.71 TAE/g DW) and terpenoid (8.24 mg LE/g DW) content in the methanolic extract. HPTLC examination showed the existence of kaempferol and benzoic acid with the highest amount (0.90% and 5.83% respectively) observed in the same treatment. FTIR analysis revealed functional group peaks with increased peak intensity in the combination treatment. Higher antioxidant activities such as DPPH (IC50: 401.39 µg/mL), ABTS (IC50: 71.18 µg/mL) and FRAP (8774.73 µM Fe (II) equivalent) were observed in the methanolic extract of combined treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first study on the impact of AMF inoculation on bioactive compounds and antioxidant activities in G. globosa flowers. Moreover, this study could lead to the development of novel pharmaceuticals and herbal remedies for various diseases.

Multi-level discriminator based contrastive learning for multiplex networks

Graph embedding is a technique for obtaining low-dimensional representations of nodes across diverse networks, which may then be used for various downstream tasks and applications. When it applies to heterogeneous networks, it is hard to handle heterogeneous networks because they usually contain different types of nodes and edges with more semantic and structural information. Recently, contrastive learning has developed as the preferred strategy for dealing with unsupervised heterogeneous graph embedding to reduce the cost of human label annotation. However, most multi-view contrastive learning approaches calculate the model’s loss only based on the mutual dependence between the node representation and graph representation. These approaches ignore that both node attributes and node clustering contain discriminative content. To solve this issue, we propose a model called Multi-Level Discriminator-based Contrastive Learning for Multiplex Networks (MLDCL). This model adopts a multi-level multi-discriminator-based approach that can simultaneously learn the global-level structural information, node-level attribute information, and local-level clustering information. Moreover, an augmentation strategy in the contrast learning process from the spectral domain is proposed to improve the representation and discriminative ability of MLDCL. Numerous tests with node clustering and classification tasks on widely used datasets demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

Root-associated mycobiota of &lt;i&gt;Goodyera repens (Orchidaceae)&lt;/i&gt; populations from three Russian regions

Goodyera repens is an orchid, widespread and abundant in the coniferous forests of the northern hemisphere. Along with other members of Orchidaceae, in natural conditions it exists in obligate mycorrhizal symbiosis. Despite a long history of study, no data on the mycobiota associated with the root system of this species have been obtained for populations growing in Russia. It is therefore necessary to assess the entire diversity of fungal associates, including non-cultivated species, as well as to obtain quantitative characteristics and evaluate the geographic specificity of fungal communities. In this work, the mycobiota of the root system of G. repens growing in the Leningrad and Moscow Regions and Karachay-Cherkess Republic was analysed qualitatively and quantitatively for the first time using high-throughput sequencing. A total of 438 operational taxonomic units were identified, with the majority belonging to the subdivision Basidiomycota. The quantitative predominance of sequences of the genera Russula, Ceratobasidium, Piloderma, Mycena, and Tomentella was observed. Significant differences between fungal communities of soil and the root system of G. repens were established in all studied regions. The regional specificity of the taxonomic composition of the mycobiota was demonstrated. The taxa spectrum of the samples from Karachay-Cherkessia differed significantly from that of the Leningrad and Moscow Regions, while no notable difference was observed between the latter two. With regard to the distribution of ecological groups of fungi, no significant differences were found between the regions.
