El Ferdan Bridge, Egypt: the world's longest swing bridge

The world's longest span swing bridge was opened on 14 November 2001 by President Mubarak of Egypt. The combined road and rail bridge crosses the Suez Canal close to the Egyptian town of Ismailia. The adopted solution, based on an illustrative design provided by the client, Egyptian National Railways, is a double swing bridge with a steel truss superstructure and a span of 340 m between pivot pier centrelines. The total weight of the bridge is 13 200 t. This paper describes the procurement, design and construction of this unusual project.

Design and construction of a floating swing bridge in Osaka

The world’s first swing and floating bridge is under construction in the Port of Osaka. It will be completed in the year 2000 to connect two reclaimed islands. The bridge rests on two hollow steel pontoons and is supported horizontally by rubber fenders and dolphins. Many important engineering issues such as the dynamic response to the wave, wind, earthquake and vehicle loads are investigated herein. The bridge can be regarded as a high-tech bridge on the advanced technology opening vistas onto 21st century.

Swing Bridge across a Navigation Channel, Denmark

A double-leaf swing bridge has recently been constructed to span a 44-m-wide dredged navigation channel in Denmark. The channel connects the city of Naestved with the sea, and the bridge is a link in a new road bypassing Naestved. The Danish Road Directorate considered a total of 14 proposals from five consulting firms: five bascule bridges, four swing bridges and five hoist bridges. The swing bridge presented here was selected based on its building and maintenance cost advantages, aesthetics, functionality, reliability and environmental compatibility. Preservation of the shoreline was also a high priority.

Floating Swing Bridge with a 280 m Span, Osaka

"Tech Port Osaka" is the name given to a large project for the Port of Osaka. The project includes construction and development of three reclaimed islands, each with port, residential and commercial facilities as well as parks and sport stadia. A 410-m-long floating swing bridge section, with a main span of 280 m, is under construction across navigable channel. The floating bridge is part of a 940-m-long road crossing, the Yumeshima-Maishima Bridge, which will connect the two eponymous reclaimed islands to the regional road network.

Contemporary French literature testifies as a whole to a rhetorical consciousness-or, to be more precise, a nonconsciousness-in the grip of autobiography. Hydraulic Power in the Port of London

Hydraulic power was used extensively in the Port of London for over a hundred years. This survey attempts to explain the surviving remains in terms of the complications of the growth of hydraulic networks and the use of hydraulic machinery. Pumping station buildings and accumulator towers are considered in detail following a general historical outline. The reasons for the adoption of hydraulic power, in spite of the high capital cost, are discussed as is the rationalisation of the networks. The final section deals with cranes, capstans, swing bridges and other machinery.

PIER PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR THE DUWAMISH SHIP CHANNEL IN SEATTLE

In 1978 an out-of-control ship hit and severely damaged a bascule bridge across the Duwamish West Waterway in Seattle seriously affecting both ship and highway traffic. The high level West Seattle Bridge was subsequently constructed to handle all through-highway traffic. A swing bridge was also designed to handle local traffic over the ship channel. The function of the pier protection system described in this paper is to protect the pivot piers and swing spans of this new bridge from damage by absorbing the part of the tranverse energy component imparted by a colliding ship, which is not absorbed by deformation of the ship's hull.

The excellent paper and specifications for movable bridges by C. C. Schneider, Past-President, Am. Soc. C. E.,* though quite general, pertained mostly to the common swing bridge, or one which rotates about a vertical axis. The writer has felt the need of specifications covering railroad bridges movable in a vertical plane, which necessity was created by the third and fourth track work in progress on the railroad with which he is connected. The common swing bridge is not well adapted to more than two tracks. The writer knows of only two four-track swing bridges in operation.
