Plant protection for a sustainable agriculture

In highly modified agricultural settings, it is now necessary to consider the management of plant diseases, insect pests and weeds within the One Health concept, to acknowledge that the health of plants, animals, environment and people are interlinked and interdependent. Articles included in this special issue of Sociedad Uruguaya de Fitopatología contribute to communicate scientific advances that will foster the sustainable management of diseases, pests and weeds in Uruguay and neighbouring countries. Although local in the field of application, the results and conclusions of the presented works will undoubtedly attract the interest of an international audience. In support of this, we can assume that the One Health initiative that guides our work mirrors the older One World concept, which reminds us that all parts are significant in the pursuit of the common good.

Screening of Herbicides for Rice Seedling Safety and Echinochloa colona Management under Australian Conditions

Different herbicides are currently required for sustainable weed management in aerobic rice. Three pot experiments were conducted using different herbicides to evaluate rice safety and for the control of Echinochloa colona, a major weed of aerobic rice. Among the pre-emergence (PRE) herbicides, it was found that pendimethalin (594 g ai ha−1) and flumioxazin (60 g ai ha−1) were relatively safe herbicides for rice and provided 100% control of E. colona. All other PRE herbicides, such as atrazine, cinmethylin, clomazone, dimethenamid-P, isoxaflutole, metribuzin, prosulfocarb + S-metolachlor, pyroxasulfone, trifluralin, and S-metolachlor reduced the biomass of rice compared with the non-treated control. Dose-response studies revealed that flumioxazin and pendimethalin even at low doses (30 g ai ha−1 for flumioxazin and 294 g ai ha−1 for pendimethalin) provided excellent control (>95%) of E. colona. Post-emergence (POST) application of paraquat (360 g ai ha−1) at the time of rice emergence caused toxicity in the crop, but also provided excellent control of E. colona. When applied just after crop emergence (11 days after sowing), Pendimethalin was found to be safe for rice (2% mortality) and reduced the biomass of E. colona by 88% compared with the non-treated control. It is quite possible that the rice variety Reiziq used in this study may have a tolerance to flumioxazin, which needs further investigation involving more rice varieties. This study suggests that flumioxazin can be used as an alternative to pendimethalin for the sustainable management of E. colona in aerobic rice.

Increasing the competitiveness of vegetable crops to weeds by improving control methods

Weeds are a major threat in crop production, and controlling them in modern agriculture is critical to preventing crop losses and ensuring food security. Intensive farming practices, climate change and natural disasters affect weed dynamics, requiring a change in management practices. Existing methods are no longer viable due to lack of manpower; chemical control methods are limited by health hazards and the development of herbicide resistance in weeds. This article discusses some potential alternative weed control strategies in modern vegetable production that are feasible and effective. Increasing the competitiveness of vegetable crops through proper planning of agrotechnologies system, preventive, cultural and mechanical methods, development of competitive varieties, allelopathy, biological control and reduction of weed seed production at harvest will be a major aspect in sustainable weed management. Improving tillage regimes has long been considered the main measure of weed control. Control of weed seed production and weed injuriousness have been shown as potential tools to reduce weed seed germination and retention in the soil. The development of allelopathy has led to the emergence of new methods of weed control. The use of the allelopathic potential of crops also deserves mention in modern weed control methods. Thermal weed control is seen as a useful method. The role of bioherbicides as an integral part of sustainable weed management is emphasized. All of these strategies are viable for modern agriculture; however, choosing a specific method and using the right combinations will be the key to success. No strategy is perfect, and therefore an integrated approach can provide the best results. The adoption of such practices can improve the efficiency of farming systems in sustainable agricul- ture. A comprehensive method for protecting vegetable crops from weeds and ways to reduce the potential contamination of fields with seeds and weed seedlings are described. The optimal norms and technological features, conditions for the effective use of modern herbicides on crops and plantings of vegetable crops are given.

History of Herbicide-Resistant Traits in Cotton in the U.S. and the Importance of Integrated Weed Management for Technology Stewardship.

This paper reviews the history of herbicide-resistant (HR) traits in U.S. cotton since the beginning, highlighting the shortcomings of each trait over time that has led to the development of their successor and emphasizing the importance of integrated weed management (IWM) going forward to ensure their long-term sustainability. Introduction of glyphosate-resistant cropping systems has allowed for expansion of no-till systems more reliant on herbicides, favored less diverse crop rotations, and heavily relied on a single herbicide mode of action (MOA). With repeated applications of glyphosate over the years, biotypes of glyphosate-resistant (GR) A. palmeri and other weeds became economically damaging pests in cotton production systems throughout the U.S. Moreover, the reported cases of weeds resistant to different MOA across various parts of the United States has increased. The dicamba- (XtendFlex®) and 2,4-D-resistant (Enlist®) cotton traits (with stacks of glyphosate and glufosinate resistance) were introduced and have been highly adopted in the U.S. to manage HR weeds. Given the current rate of novel herbicide MOA discovery and increase in new HR weed cases, the future of sustainable weed management relies on an integrated approach that includes non-herbicidal methods with herbicides to ensure long-term success.

Seasonal Changes in the Plant Growth-Inhibitory Effects of Rosemary Leaves on Lettuce Seedlings.

Plant biodiversity has been studied to explore allelopathic species for the sustainable management of weeds to reduce the reliance on synthetic herbicides. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L., syn Salvia rosmarinus Spenn.), was found to have plant growth-inhibitory effects, and carnosic acid was reported as an allelochemical in the plant. In this study, the effects of seasonal variation (2011–2012) on the carnosic acid concentration and phytotoxicity of rosemary leaves from two locations in Tunisia (Fahs and Matmata) were investigated. The carnosic acid concentration in rosemary leaves was determined by HPLC, and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was used as the receptor plant in the phytotoxicity bioassay. The highest carnosic acid concentration was found in rosemary samples collected in June 2011, which also had the highest inhibitory activity. Furthermore, a significant inverse correlation (r = −0.529; p < 0.01) was found between the inhibitory activity on lettuce hypocotyl and the carnosic acid concentration in rosemary leaves. Both temperature and elevation had a significant positive correlation with carnosic acid concentration, while rainfall showed a negative correlation. The results showed that the inhibitory effects of rosemary leaf samples collected in summer was highest due to their high carnosic acid concentration. The phytotoxicity of rosemary needs to be studied over time to determine if it varies by season under field conditions.

Sustainable Crop and Weed Management in the Era of the EU Green Deal: A Survival Guide

Agricultural systems in the EU have become more vulnerable and less sustainable due to an overreliance on herbicides and the tremendous increase in herbicide-resistant weeds. The EU Green Deal aims to reduce the use and risk of chemical pesticides by 50% by 2030, although it is still undefined whether a reduction in herbicide use could be feasible in different farming systems and situations. This review aims to provide a holistic framework for sustainable crop and weed management to reduce the herbicide input and ensure crop protection. Current and future dilemmas and policies that need to be handled to ensure the agroecological transition of the EU’s agricultural systems are also discussed. The integration of non-chemical alternatives for integrated weed management is feasible and includes novel cultivation techniques (e.g., intercropping, false seedbed, reduced tillage, crop rotation and diversification, adjustments on sowing densities and dates), non-chemical tools (e.g., flaming, seed coating, beneficial microorganisms, mechanical weeding, biocontrol agents and natural herbicides), competitive plant material (hybrids and cultivars, cover crops, service crops), and new technologies and precision agriculture tools (e.g., Decision Support Systems, robots, remote sensing, UAVs, omics and nanotechnology). A special focus should be appointed to agroecology and biodiversity conservation.

Climate effect on Avena fatua field emergence dynamics: A 38‐year experiment in the semiarid Pampean region of Argentina

Climate events modulate weed population dynamics mainly by influencing field seedling emergence patterns. Field experiments aiming to study the influence of climate on the early-stage establishment of weeds are of utmost importance from a practical and strategic decision-making management point of view. The objective of this study was to analyse the effect of climate variations on the field emergence dynamics of Avena fatua in the southwest area of the semiarid Pampean region of Argentina. Field emergence patterns of A. fatua were monitored from 1977 to 2015. Seedling counts were destructively sampled at weekly intervals. Three quadrats (1 m2 each) were randomly distributed on a 5 ha experimental field with a high natural population density of A. fatua in the absence of a crop. Results show that the emergence strategy of this species is highly plastic with a striking variation in response to year-to-year climate signals. Avena fatua field emergence strategies were classified as staggered, early, medium and late based on both chronological and hydrothermal-time parameters. In the short-term, precipitation regimes during both the after-ripening and emergence phases largely explained the resulting emergence strategy. In the long-term, the combined effect of a reduction in both the precipitation frequency and the mean minimum temperature correlated with an increase in the staggered emergence pattern. Results also point out the adaptability of A. fatua in the area under study, further suggesting a bet-hedging fitness strategy that could diminish the risk of population decline under changing climate scenarios. From an agronomic perspective, the occurrence of staggered emergence patterns with an extended emergence window would complicate the definition of the optimal time for weed control. Thus, tailoring decisions based on the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) episodes (neutral, negative or positive) forecast plus the implementation of weed emergence models could lead to more accurate and sustainable weed management decisions.

Weed Management Strategies in Direct Seeded Rice: A Review

Rice (Oryza sativa) is a staple food of more than half of the population of the world and provides food security and livelihoods for millions of population. Direct seeding of rice (DSR) refers to the process of direct sowing the seeds in the field rather than by transplanting seedlings from the nursery. Direct seeded rice is an age old practice and before the introduction of green revolution in India. Rainfed rice was often broadcasted into moist soil and crops were highly prone to weed competition resulted into low yield. Rice ecosystems and establishment methods determined the weed spectrum and degree of infestation in rice field (DSR). Weeds are considered as a major biological constraint in direct seeded rice. In direct seeded rice, weed management depend on weed flora, critical period of weed control, availability of water and method to be adopted. Integrated weed management (IWM) is essential to achieve the long term, sustainable and economic management of weeds in direct seeded rice. The literature regarding the direct seeded rice, critical period of crop weed competition, different types of weed flora and different methods for the effective and sustainable management of weeds in direct seeded rice are reviewed in this paper.

Glyphosate resistance in junglerice (Echinochloa colona) and alternative herbicide options for its effective control

AbstractControl of glyphosate-resistant (GR) junglerice is a challenging task in eastern Australia. There is limited information on the efficacy and reliability of alternate herbicides for GR populations of junglerice, especially when targeting large plants and when temperatures are high. A series of experiments were conducted to confirm the level of glyphosate resistance in three populations of junglerice and to evaluate the efficacy of alternate herbicides for the control of GR junglerice populations. The LD50 of glyphosate of B17/7, B17/34, and B17/35 populations was found to be 298, 2,260, and 1,715 g ae ha–1, respectively, suggesting that populations B17/34 and B17/35 were highly resistant to glyphosate. Glyphosate efficacy was reduced at high-temperature (35 C day/25 C night) compared with low-temperature conditions (25 C day/15 C night), suggesting that control of susceptible populations may also be reduced if glyphosate is sprayed under hot conditions. Preemergence herbicides dimethenamid-P (1,000 g ai ha–1) and pendimethalin (1,500 g ai ha–1) provided 100% control of GR populations (B17/34 and 17/35). Postemergence herbicides, such as clethodim (60 or 90 g ai ha–1), glufosinate (750 g ai ha–1), haloxyfop (52 or 78 g ai ha–1), and paraquat (400 or 600 g ai ha–1), applied at the four-leaf stage provided 100% control of GR populations. For larger junglerice plants (eight-leaf stage), postemergence applications of paraquat (400 or 600 g ai ha–1) provided greater weed control than clethodim, glufosinate, and haloxyfop. A mixture of either glufosinate or haloxyfop with glyphosate provided poor control of GR junglerice populations compared with application of glufosinate or haloxyfop applied alone. Efficacy of glufosinate and haloxyfop for the control of GR populations decreased when applied in the sequential spray after glyphosate application. This study identified alternative herbicide options for GR junglerice populations that can be used in herbicide rotation programs for sustainable weed management.

Seedbank persistence of four summer grass weed species in the northeast cropping region of Australia.

Summer grass weed species are a particular problem in the northeast cropping region of Australia because they are prolific seeders and favor no-till systems. Information on weed seed persistence levels can be used for the development of effective and sustainable integrated weed management programs. A field study was conducted over 42 months to evaluate the seedbank persistence of Chloris truncata, C. virgata, Dactyloctenium radulans, and Urochloa panicoides as affected by burial depth (0, 2, and 10 cm). Regardless of species, buried seeds persisted longer than surface seeds and there was no difference in seed persistence between 2 and 10 cm depths. Surface seeds of C. truncata depleted completely in 12 months and buried seeds in 24 months. Similarly, C. virgata seeds placed on the soil surface depleted in 12 months. Buried seeds of this species took 18 months to completely deplete, suggesting that C. truncata seeds persist longer than C. virgata seeds. Surface seeds of D. radulans took 36 months to completely deplete, whereas about 7% of buried seeds were still viable at 42 months. U. panicoides took 24 and 42 months to completely exhaust the surface and buried seeds, respectively. These results suggest that leaving seeds on the soil surface will result in a more rapid depletion of the seedbank. Information on seed persistence will help to manage these weeds using strategic tillage operations.

Sustainable Approach to Weed Management: The Role of Precision Weed Management

In the last few decades, the increase in the world’s population has created a need to produce more food, generating, consequently, greater pressure on agricultural production. In addition, problems related to climate change, water scarcity or decreasing amounts of arable land have serious implications for farming sustainability. Weeds can affect food production in agricultural systems, decreasing the product quality and productivity due to the competition for natural resources. On the other hand, weeds can also be considered to be valuable indicators of biodiversity because of their role in providing ecosystem services. In this sense, there is a need to carry out an effective and sustainable weed management process, integrating the various control methods (i.e., cultural, mechanical and chemical) in a harmonious way, without harming the entire agrarian ecosystem. Thus, intensive mechanization and herbicide use should be avoided. Herbicide resistance in some weed biotypes is a major concern today and must be tackled. On the other hand, the recent development of weed control technologies can promote higher levels of food production, lower the amount of inputs needed and reduce environmental damage, invariably bringing us closer to more sustainable agricultural systems. In this paper, we review the most common conventional and non-conventional weed control strategies from a sustainability perspective, highlighting the application of the precision and automated weed control technologies associated with precision weed management (PWM).

Characterization and management of metsulfuron‐resistant Rumex dentatus biotypes in Northwest India

AbstractEvolution of herbicide resistance in weeds is a serious threat for sustainable crop production. There were reports of poor control of toothed dock (Rumex dentatus L.) with metsulfuron‐methyl herbicide, an acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor used in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at farmers’ fields in Northwest India. Two‐year greenhouse and field studies were conducted to (a) determine the level of metsulfuron resistance in toothed dock biotypes collected from farmers’ fields and (b) find effective herbicides for its management. Metsulfuron‐resistant toothed dock biotypes were 6.8‐ to 23.0‐fold less sensitive relative to the susceptible biotype based on resistance index values. Metabolic herbicide resistance is less likely as there was no evidence of involvement of cytochrome P450s those inhibited by malathion. The resistant toothed dock biotypes had a Trp‐574‐Leu amino acid substitution in the ALS gene. Application of premixes such as metsulfuron methyl plus carfentrazone ethyl (5 + 20 g ha–1) and halauxifen plus fluroxypyr (7.3 + 233.3 g ha–1) resulted in effective control of metsulfuron‐resistant toothed dock biotypes in screenhouse and field studies. This first report elucidating the mechanism of resistance to metsulfuron methyl in toothed dock from India will help in devising sustainable weed management approaches.

Precision farming techniques for sustainable weed management

Weed management in modern agriculture is crucial to avoid yield losses and ensure food security. Climate change, intensive agricultural practices, and natural disasters change weed dynamics, requiring changes in weed management strategies. In addition to labor shortages, manual and chemical control options are no longer viable because of weed resistance to herbicides and the effects of eco-degradation and health hazards. As a result, weed management strategies that boost agricultural productivity are urgently needed. Precision agriculture has become one alternative for managing weeds, using tools and technologies to boost farm productivity. Recent innovations in precision application technology have made it possible to make smaller treatment units that can be applied to meet sitespecific demands. These systems combine ground-based and aerial weed sensing systems (that are site-specific, need-specific, and cost-effective) with integrated weed management. Despite the viability of all of these strategies in today's agriculture, site-specific selections and the appropriate combination of these eco-friendly strategies can efficiently reduce herbicide use, and ensure environmental protection while enhancing weed control efficiency and crop yield.

Weed Biology: An Important Science to Develop Effective Weed Management Strategies

The world’s population is increasing at an alarming rate and to feed this population, food production needs to be increased significantly. There are several abiotic and biotic factors affecting the productivity of crops. Among biotic factors, weeds are the most important constraint to crop production throughout the world. They cause a huge yield loss in different crops and cost growers a significant amount of money. Herbicides are widely used to control weeds; however, there are concerns over the evolution of resistance in weeds, limited availability of herbicides with new modes of action, and environmental pollution. These issues suggest the need to reduce reliance on herbicides and develop sustainable weed management programs. However, to develop such programs, there is a need to gain a better understanding of weed biology. This article briefly describes the importance of weed biology in managing weeds.

Cropping system diversification does not always beget weed diversity

Cropping system (CS) diversification appears as a promising solution to increase CS sustainability. However, weed community response to different options of CS diversification remains poorly documented. Moreover, these effects are expected to be more pronounced in experimental than commercial farms because experimental farms explore more diverse combinations of farming practices. We hypothesized that (i) CS diversification would increase weed diversity at multiple spatio-temporal scales but that (ii) different options of CS diversification would select different weed communities and that (iii) responses could differ between experimental and commercial farms. Hence, weed density per species was measured over a 6-year time period in a CS experiment and in a farmers’ network (both resorting to diverse CSs that were numerically summarized to allow their comparison, i.e. different positions along gradients of tillage intensity, herbicide use, crop rotation length etc.). Weed density measures were used to compute weed diversity indices (taxonomic and functional, at annual and plurennial scales) and community weighted means on key response traits for each CS. All experimented alternative CSs (diversified crop sequences with coherent but different combinations of weed management tools) showed that diverse combinations of agronomic tools are available to increase weed diversity, as highlighted by a 3 and 2-fold increase in species richness at the annual and plurennial scales, respectively. In contrast, only one farmer CS (3-year rotation, low tillage intensity, intermediate herbicide reliance) showed significantly higher levels of weed diversity, possibly because the reduced tillage intensity was not compensated by other agronomic levers (e.g. increase of herbicide use and/or crop rotation diversity). Such outcomes were attributed to (i) reduced CS complexity in commercial compared to experimental farms and (ii) high herbicide reliance in commercial farms, irrespectively of CS complexity. Across both experimental and commercial farms, tillage, weed management and crop type appeared as the main factors structuring weed communities. Systems with reduced tillage were associated with a higher percentage of grasses and perennials. Systems with spring/summer crops and/or mechanical weeding were associated with a higher proportion of spring/summer and perennial species. These results suggest that solutions are readily available for farmers to implement sustainable weed management, but supports are required to address the factors hindering the adoption of these experimented CS in commercial conditions.

Weeding Frequency Effects on Growth and Yield of Dry Bean Intercropped with Sweet Sorghum and Cowpea under a Dryland Area

A better understanding of the dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) growth and yield response to weed competition under the intercropping system is critical for improving sustainable weed management strategies. A two-year trial was conducted with three types of crop arrangement (sole cropping, inter-row, and intra-row intercropping) combined with weeding frequency (no weeding, weeding over the first 50 days of crop growth, and weed-free). Effects of the treatments were tested on dry bean agronomic indicators in terms of the following: 100-grain weight, dry biomass, grain yield, grains per pod, pods per plant, plant height, number of leaves per plant, and chlorophyll content. The intercropping pattern significantly affected dry bean pods per plant, height, and chlorophyll content, while weeding frequency significantly affected all measured agronomic indicators for dry bean, except for chlorophyll content, during the 2017/18 growing season. The results showed that the significant measured agronomic indicators were the lowest under no weed control; however, they increased as weeding frequency increased. The 2018/19 growing season followed a similar trend; however, the interaction effect significantly affected dry bean 100-grain weight, dry biomass, and number of leaves per plant at 40 days after emergence. The dry bean/sweet sorghum or cowpea intra-row intercropping and intermediate weeding frequency displayed optimum productivity.

Crop Allelopathy for Sustainable Weed Management in Agroecosystems: Knowing the Present with a View to the Future

In the face of yield losses caused by weeds, especially in low-input agricultural systems, and environmental pollution due to the excessive use of synthetic herbicides, sustainable weed management has become mandatory. To address these issues, allelopathy, i.e., the biochemical phenomenon of chemical interactions between plants through the release of secondary metabolites into the environment, is gaining popularity. Although many important crops are known for their allelopathic potential, farmers are still reluctant to use such knowledge practically. It is therefore important to assist advisors and farmers in assessing whether allelopathy can be effectively implemented into an eco-friendly weed management strategy. Here, we aim to give a comprehensive and updated review on the herbicidal potential of allelopathy. The major findings are the following: (1) Crops from different botanical families show allelopathic properties and can be cultivated alone or in combination with other non-allelopathic crops. (2) Many allelopathic tools can be adopted (crop rotation, intercropping, cover cropping as living or dead mulches, green manuring, use of allelochemical-based bioherbicides). (3) These methods are highly flexible and feature increased efficiency when combined into an integrated weed management strategy. (4) Recent advances in the chemistry of allelopathy are facilitating the use of allelochemicals for bioherbicide production. (5) Several biotechnologies, such as stress induction and genetic engineering techniques, can enhance the allelopathic potential of crops or introduce allelopathic traits de novo. This review shows how important the role of allelopathy for sustainable weed management is and, at the same time, indicates the need for field experiments, mainly under an integrated approach. Finally, we recommend the combination of transgenic allelopathy with the aforementioned allelopathic tools to increase the weed-suppressive efficacy of allelopathy.

How Can Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Be Used for Detecting Weeds in Agricultural Fields?

Weeds are among the most harmful abiotic factors in agriculture, triggering significant yield loss worldwide. Remote sensing can detect and map the presence of weeds in various spectral, spatial, and temporal resolutions. This review aims to show the current and future trends of UAV applications in weed detection in the crop field. This study systematically searched the original articles published from 1 January 2016 to 18 June 2021 in the databases of Scopus, ScienceDirect, Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux (CAB) Direct, and Web of Science (WoS) using Boolean string: “weed” AND “Unmanned Aerial Vehicle” OR “UAV” OR “drone”. Out of the papers identified, 144 eligible studies did meet our inclusion criteria and were evaluated. Most of the studies (i.e., 27.42%) on weed detection were carried out during the seedling stage of the growing cycle for the crop. Most of the weed images were captured using red, green, and blue (RGB) camera, i.e., 48.28% and main classification algorithm was machine learning techniques, i.e., 47.90%. This review initially highlighted articles from the literature that includes the crops’ typical phenology stage, reference data, type of sensor/camera, classification methods, and current UAV applications in detecting and mapping weed for different types of crop. This study then provides an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of each sensor and algorithm and tries to identify research gaps by providing a brief outlook at the potential areas of research concerning the benefit of this technology in agricultural industries. Integrated weed management, coupled with UAV application improves weed monitoring in a more efficient and environmentally-friendly way. Overall, this review demonstrates the scientific information required to achieve sustainable weed management, so as to implement UAV platform in the real agricultural contexts.
