The Adoption of Sustainable Supply Chain Management Practices on Performance of Agricultural Sectors in Ethiopia

In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in interest from both academic and corporate sectors concerning sustainable supply chain management. The increasing number of published papers focusing on this topic is a signal for this. To contribute further to the development of this field, this paper presents a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the impact of adopting sustainable supply chain management in the agricultural sector in Ethiopia, considering a total of 67 papers published between 2010 and 2023. This literature review aims to examine barriers, internal and external driving forces of the adoption of sustainable supply chain management practices, the impact of adopting sustainable supply chain management practices on the performance and identify constraints and opportunities of sustainable supply chain management practices in Ethiopian agricultural sectors. Focusing on the Ethiopian context, the study provides insights into the link between sustainable supply chain practices and performance outcomes. Additionally, NVIVO, qualitative data analysis software, was utilized to enhance the review process and ensure the systematic literature analysis.

Be digital to be sustainable! The mediating role of sustainable supply chain practices in triggering the effects of digitalisation on Sustainable Development Goals in the European Union

Research background: European Union (EU) economies need to enhance sustainable supply chains (SSCs) through digitalisation to realise sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, the impact of digitalisation on the SDGs is complex and multifaceted, and the role of SSCs in mediating this relationship is not fully understood. While extant research has delved into the influence of digitalisation on SSCs, predominantly within specific industries or geographic regions, a research gap persists concerning large-N samples and the generalisability of results. Purpose of the article: This study evaluates the role of digitalisation in achieving SDGs along with the mediation of SSCs based on the resource-based view, the triple-bottom-line, and dynamic capabilities theories. Methods: The study has extracted panel data from Eurostat from 2013 to 2022 and evaluated these data through partial least squares structural equation modelling to estimate the association among constructs. The sample covers the EU–27 countries and consists of 270 observations. Digitalisation is operationalised as the use of digital technologies to, for instance, innovate business models, provide new revenue streams and value-producing opportunities, and enhance, streamline, and make supply chain processes more efficient and environmentally sustainable. SSC practices encompass the design, planning, execution, and monitoring of supply chain activities to create value, optimise resources, and minimise environmental impact. Findings & value-added: The findings indicate that digitalisation has a positive association with SDGs and SSC practices. The study also noted that SSC initiatives play a mediating role between digitalisation and SDGs among the EU economies. These interesting insights could direct policymakers to enforce the initiative of digitalisation in SSCs to boost SDGs in EU economies. Although the literature on digitalisation and SSCs has gained significant attention, this is the first study in these domains.

Blockchain for sustainable supply chains: A systematic review and framework for SME implementation

This paper presents a systematic review of the role of blockchain technology in fostering sustainable supply chains, with a particular emphasis on its implementation for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The objective is to explore how blockchain can address critical challenges such as transparency, traceability, and accountability, thereby contributing to more sustainable and ethical supply chain practices. Through an extensive literature review, this study examines various blockchain applications and their potential to enhance sustainability by reducing inefficiencies, ensuring compliance with environmental standards, and mitigating risks related to unethical practices. The research methodology involved a comprehensive analysis of peer-reviewed articles, case studies, and industry reports to identify the benefits and barriers of blockchain adoption in supply chains. Key findings suggest that while blockchain can significantly enhance transparency and sustainability, SMEs face unique challenges in terms of technological adoption, cost implications, and scalability. Additionally, the paper proposes a framework tailored to SME needs, outlining practical steps for blockchain implementation, including initial investment strategies, stakeholder collaboration, and integration with existing technologies. The study concludes that blockchain holds great potential for advancing sustainable supply chains, but its adoption by SMEs requires a strategic approach that addresses financial, technical, and operational barriers. This framework provides a roadmap for SMEs aiming to leverage blockchain technology to achieve sustainability goals, thus contributing to long-term business competitiveness and compliance with global sustainability standards.

The intersection of green marketing and sustainable supply chain practices in FMCG SMEs

As sustainability increasingly shapes consumer behavior and corporate strategies, Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are adopting green marketing and sustainable supply chain practices to gain a competitive edge. This review explores the intersection of these two critical areas, demonstrating how their integration can drive both business growth and environmental responsibility. Green marketing, which focuses on promoting eco-friendly products and sustainable business practices, has become a key tool for FMCG SMEs to differentiate themselves in a crowded marketplace. By adopting strategies such as eco-friendly packaging, ethical sourcing, and transparency in communicating sustainability efforts, SMEs can build stronger consumer trust, foster brand loyalty, and meet the growing demand for environmentally conscious products. Simultaneously, sustainable supply chain practices ensure that the production, distribution, and logistics processes align with environmental and social goals. These practices include reducing carbon emissions, minimizing waste, and working closely with suppliers to ensure ethical sourcing of materials. The synergy between green marketing and sustainable supply chains creates a feedback loop where operational sustainability supports marketing efforts, and consumer demand for green products encourages further sustainability improvements. This review also examines the challenges FMCG SMEs face in aligning these strategies, such as cost barriers, regulatory compliance, and supply chain complexity. Through case studies and industry examples, it highlights how innovative technology and stakeholder collaboration can help overcome these challenges. Ultimately, this study underscores that integrating green marketing and sustainable supply chain practices is not only essential for addressing environmental concerns but also for enhancing competitive positioning, customer satisfaction, and long-term market success in the FMCG sector. Enhancing Supply Chain Sustainability: The Role of Blockchain and Digital Technologies

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of blockchain and digital technologies in enhancing supply chain sustainability. Data was collected through an extensive review of academic literature, industry reports, and case studies. One remarkable finding was that blockchain technology can reduce supply chain fraud by up to 80% by providing an immutable and transparent ledger. The research examined the integration of AI, IoT, and blockchain, highlighting their combined impact on improving operational efficiency, transparency, and reducing environmental footprints. Keeping in mind the fact that supply chains are becoming increasingly complex and environmentally impactful, the paper concluded that the adoption of these technologies is critical for achieving sustainable supply chain practices. The study underscores the need for addressing implementation challenges, such as high costs and data privacy concerns, to fully realise the potential of digitalization and blockchain in creating resilient, efficient, and eco-friendly supply chains. This research provides valuable insights for both academics and practitioners aiming to enhance supply chain sustainability through technological innovation.

A bibliometric analysis of the genesis, journey and current status of green supply chain management in the digital economy

Purpose This paper aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of studies focusing on green supply chain management (GSCM) within the context of the digital economy.Design/methodology/approach We utilize the Web of Science database to search and filter relevant documents spanning the years 2003–2022. This extensive dataset enables us to analyze the growth and cutting-edge developments in research pertaining to GSCM in the digital economy.Findings The paper finds a significant increase in research interest and output, particularly noticeable from 2016 onwards, indicating the growing relevance of integrating GSCM with digital technologies. It is found that the prominent contribution of countries like China, England and the USA, underscoring a strong geographical diversity in research outputs. China leads in the number of publications, which reflects its significant role in shaping the discourse around GSCM in the digital economy. However, when it comes to citations, the USA leads, suggesting a higher impact or quality of research emanating from this region. Collaborative dynamics outlined in the study demonstrate extensive international cooperation, primarily among leading research countries, which is facilitated by shared digital platforms enhancing the research’s reach and impact. The study also highlights a range of emerging themes such as the adoption of blockchain technology, Internet of Things (IoT) and the circular economy within GSCM, indicating dynamic areas for future research.Practical implications The findings of this study hold significant practical implications for researchers, practitioners and policymakers. They shed light on the current state of research in GSCM within the digital economy, highlighting areas where further investigation is needed and pointing to the emerging trends in this field. Understanding the distribution of research and influential authors can guide future collaborative efforts and inform decision-making processes in the pursuit of sustainable supply chain practices in the digital era.Originality/value This paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the evolving landscape of GSCM in the digital economy. It offers valuable insights into the growth patterns, key contributors and geographical distribution of research in this domain. Generative AI usage and sustainable supply chain performance: A practice-based view

The emergence of generative AI presents numerous potential solutions to address challenges in sustainable supply chain management (SCM). However, not all firms can effectively master the methods of using generative AI and realize potential benefits. To address this dilemma, we adopt a practice-based view (PBV) to examine generative AI usage’s effect on sustainable supply chain performance (SSCP). Analyzing survey data from 213 Chinese manufacturing firms, we identify a positive relationship between generative AI usage and SSCP. Moreover, two types of sustainable supply chain practices—green supply chain collaboration (GSCC) and circular economy implementation (CEI)——emerge as serial mediators connecting this relationship. We contribute to existing AI-enabled SCM research by elucidating the potential mediation mechanisms underlying the link between generative AI usage and SSCP. We also offer insightful implications for firms adapting to new norms in global SCM.

Analysis of Industry 4.0 technological enablers for sustainable supply chain transparency in a fuzzy environment

AbstractThis study aims to identify various Industry 4.0 technological enablers and analyze their relationships in achieving transparency in sustainable supply chains. Initially, 17 Industry 4.0 technological enablers were selected based on an extensive literature review of sustainable supply chains and evaluated through Systems and Information Processing theories. Using the fuzzy Delphi method, these enablers were then narrowed down to 14 relevant ones. The reliability of these enablers was assessed by measuring their internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha (α) and McDonald's omega (ω). The fuzzy Decision‐Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method was then used to demonstrate that blockchain, cybersecurity, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI) are the most prominent and influential enablers for enhancing transparency in a sustainable supply chain. Additionally, the cause–effect relationship of other key enablers provides evidence for a feasibility study that links sustainability with transparency across the supply chain. These identified Industry 4.0 technological enablers can assist external stakeholders and policymakers in improving transparency and advancing sustainable supply chain practices.

The effect of supply chain integration, management commitment, and sustainable supply chain practices on non-profit organizations performance using SEM-FsQCA: Evidence from Afghanistan

This study explores the impact of supply chain integration, management commitment, and sustainable supply chain practices on the performance of non-profit organizations in Afghanistan. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (FsQCA) with 169 participants, it finds that supply chain integration enhances sustainable supply chain practices and overall performance. Management commitment improves sustainable supply chain practice, while supply chain challenges significantly affect organizational performance. FsQCA reveals key factors like sustainable supply chain practices and management commitment, highlighting their contribution to positive outcomes. Overcoming supply chain challenges within an integrated framework is crucial for non-profit performance enhancement.

Wheeling towards sustainability: the nexus of external pressures, green innovation and circular supply chain excellence

PurposeThe study aims to investigate the firm reaction to external pressures and the subsequent transformation to green innovation (GI) and sustainability, leading to an enhanced circular supply chain performance. The research examined the effect of coercive, normative and mimetic pressures on GI within the Indian tire industry context.Design/methodology/approachThe authors have designed a self-administered questionnaire and received 283 responses. Nonresponse bias analysis was conducted first before proceeding to other assumptions such as constant variance and normality. The confirmatory factor analysis was used to check the data’s integrity and reliability. The PLS-structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to validate the constructs and test the established hypotheses.FindingsExternal regulatory pressures significantly impact the tire industry’s move towards GI. Normative pressures from societal expectations and industry standards, along with mimetic pressures where companies emulate best practices, both drive the industry toward sustainable initiatives. Further, a clear positive relationship emerges between GI and sustainable supply chain practices (SSCP). This shift emphasizes recycling, reusing and reducing waste and showcases the industry’s commitment to minimizing its environmental impact.Originality/valueUnlike existing literature that predominantly explores SSCP, the study introduces an integrated framework that intertwines institutional pressures (IP), green innovation (GI), and SSCP to elevate circular supply chain practices (CSCP). The current study highlights the relationships and practical implications within the Indian tire industry.

Sustainable human resource management practices and corporate sustainable supply chain: the moderating role of firm technology orientation

ABSTRACT This study investigates how corporate human resource management practices contribute to sustainable supply chain practices. The two types of human resource management practices relating to corporate social responsibility, include (1) employee standardised work conditions practices and (2) employee well-being and development practices. Corporate technology orientation is investigated as a moderating factor on the empirical evidence from 15 companies in the mobile technology industry. Results show that employee well-being and development practices lead to stronger community-oriented social responsibility, thus the increasing adoption of sustainable supply chain practices. Corporate technology orientation strengthens the positive impacts of employee well-being and development practices. These results imply the importance of adopting appropriate human resource management strategies, to deploy a sustainable supply chain.

Stage-wise green supply chain management and environmental performance: Impact of blockchain technology

In the era of globalisation, the use of technology and concerns for sustainability is eminent in the supply chain management practices. The current study focuses on sustainable and green supply practices in different stages of supply chain management and how they can be facilitated by blockchain technology (BT). The study has addressed the existing gaps in the area namely, the lack of research assessing stage-wise green supply chain for environmental performance focusing on BT. The current study aims to assess the impact of BT on different stages of the green supply chain and a firm's environmental performance. The study also focuses on analyzing the impact of green supply chain stages on environmental performance. The study uses PLS-based structural equation modelling approach to investigate the hypothesised relationships between BT adoption and stage-wise green supply chain practices. The data was collected from individuals from medium-sized enterprises from the manufacturing industry in India. The findings reveal a positive association between blockchain adoption and green supply chain management practices leading to enhancement in environmental performance. Furthermore, the study indicates a positive relationship between blockchain integration and different stages of the green supply chain, underscoring its multi-faceted impact on environmental performance. The findings imply that the BT adoption can facilitate the realization of sustainable supply chain practices and performance improvement.

The Effect of Supply Chain Sustainability Practices on Romanian SME Performance

The paper uniquely assesses the relationship between the main elements of the sustainability of the supply chain and the performance of Romanian enterprises. To identify dimensions of supply chain sustainability, a sample survey was conducted on a structured questionnaire basis among a sample of 385 Romanian enterprises represented by supply chain managers and practitioners. The hypothesis testing and the validation of the proposed construct model were achieved by using the modeling of the equation with the smallest partial squares (SEM-PLS) and multigroup analysis (PLS-MGA). The results suggest a positive and significant relationship between supply chain sustainability practices and business performance. This study provides original evidence to Romanian managers that business performance can be maximized by focusing on increasing the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of the supply chain. The results of this quantitative marketing research add to the existing literature and have far-reaching theoretical and practical implications for enterprises in the Romanian economy.

Sustainable food chains designed for optimised resource use: Optimising downscaled food chains for sustainable resource use: A comprehensive case study on tomato juice

As consumers increasingly prefer locally sourced food, there is a growing movement towards optimising resource use and reducing emissions in supply chains. While Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) traditionally emphasise social and institutional proximity, this study strategically addresses the environmental impact by implementing innovative technologies on a smaller scale. This article explores the possibility of implementing a mobile processing unit (FOX unit) that utilises two innovative technologies, one for gentle juice extraction (spiral filter) and the other for preservation of freshly pressed products (pulsed electric fields - PEF). The study investigates a solution that could streamline the supply chain between producers and consumers by offering a decentralised and modular approach to processing. Using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), tomato juice production is compared under traditional thermal pasteurisation (Scenario 1) and the FOX unit (Scenario 2). This study also assesses the impacts of centralising production and shipping raw materials between countries (Scenario 3), considering the FOX unit as part of the evaluation. Further analysis includes relocating this unit to the countries of raw material origin (Scenario 4). Data retrieved from literature, databases, and practical trials, revealed that tomato juice production with the FOX unit led to a 15% reduction in environmental impact across all categories compared to traditional thermal pasteurisation. When relocating the unit, the overall environmental impact decreased as the volume of processed raw materials increased, reaching levels comparable to the results obtained from shipping 1 ton of raw material to a centralised location in various studied countries (with variations in midpoint categories depending on the location, such as 200 tons in France, 15 tons in Italy, and 45 tons in Spain), albeit with variation in the categories. This study highlights the potential environmental benefits of integrating the FOX unit in SFSCs, offering valuable insights for sustainable food supply chain practices.
